Surrounded by
a symphony of hums and hisses, Maj. Robert Gowan (left) and 1st Lt.
Brian Nash of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, Vicenza, Italy, walk through
a corridor of pipes at the large oil facility north of Kirkuk in
northern Iraq. |
The Kirkuk
facility also produces natural gas, according to Hassan Shunasi, the
facility's shift control operator. Pictured with Shunasi is U.S. Army
1st Lt. Brian Nash, 25, of East Grand Rapids, Mich. Nash is the
executive officer for Delta Battery, 319th Field Artillery, 173rd
Airborne Brigade. |
the 173rd Airborne Brigade, commanded by Army Col. Bill Mayville, was
focused on fighting the Iraqi army. Now Mayville's troops — and others
across the country — are fighting to maintain the peace. The
43-year-old commander — and "mayor" of Kirkuk — meets frequently with
local leaders to gauge the needs of an area that includes roughly a
million people and scores of villages |
U.S. Army
Col. Bill Mayville often meets with local leaders of all walks of
life. Several days ago he met with 10 members of the Salhi tribe,
whose ancestral land includes the vast oil and natural gas fields
north of Kirkuk, Iraq.
