Dear soldier of the 173rd Airborne: I am lucky enough to say that I am a career civilian. I don't share the honor of military service with you, though my family has served in every fight since colonial times. I want to personally thank you for myself, my wife and my two young boys, now sleeping safe at home. I know about the dangers you encounter for our sake. I may be busy with my civilian life but I have not forgotten you. You and your family are in my thoughts - you are part of our American family. Have faith in the strength we Americans always find in each other! May God bless you and keep you safe. Come home to us when your job is done. Kiss your wives and your babies and rest well - knowing that We love you. See you stateside! John Quimby Santa Barbara, CA

Hi Miles, It is getting cold here and the leaves are beginning to turn. Went to a "hymn sing" the other night at an old church lit by kerosene lanterns. When we sang "America" the other night, everyone in the room stood up to sing. Everyone here is thinking about you and all of the Sky Soldiers. Praying for you everyday. Love always, Grandma and "Fat Momma"

Has there been any news as to the men who were injured in the attack on Thursday, September 25th? My cousin is in the 173rd. He has not contacted us since September 24th. It's unusual for him not to respond for several days unless he is off on a mission. Since he didn't mention being gone for awhile and he hasn't contacted us, our family is worried.... but hopeful. Please send news if anyone knows the names of the injured. On an even sadder note, my family sends condolences to Kyle Thomas's family and friends. We are very proud of every single service person over there. We mourn your loss with you. You are all in our prayers.

This website and message board are completely overwhelming. I am a friend of Kyle Thomas's and have known him since he was born. He was like family to me. The comments from all of you that didn't even know Kyle and his family are so touching. I cannot speak on their behalf, but I want to say "thank you" for your care, concern and heartfelt wishes for Kyle's friends and family and for all of the soldiers. Though my heart aches with grief, it also is filled with pride. I am proud of Kyle, proud of all of our men and women that fight for us, and proud to be an American along with all of you other wonderful Americans!

Info posted on the latest Stars & Stripes. Hopefully this helps get most of our Sky Soldiers back to their families for much needed R & R....... Soldiers, families offered discounts on domestic portion of R&R flights By Brad Foss, The Associated Press European edition, Tuesday, September 30, 2003 Major airlines are offering discounts to soldiers and their families taking advantage of the military’s new rest and relaxation program, which has received some criticism because the last leg of soldiers’ vacations are not paid for. Under the first major R&R program since Vietnam, the government pays for flights from Iraq to Germany, and then the United States, at which point the troops must pick up the tab for any domestic travel. Before Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines this weekend began offering the troops special fares requiring no advance purchase, soldiers on vacation with little notice were faced with buying extremely expensive last-minute fares. “What family can afford to pay $2,000 or more for a same-day plane ticket?” said Sherry Billups of Backduck, Minn., whose husband Steven Baazard is a 15-year veteran of the National Guard. Under the terms of the discounts offered by Delta and Southwest, no advance purchase or minimum stay is required and fares are refundable. American Airlines, which had been offering soldiers discounts on 3-day advance purchase tickets since May, updated its policy Monday to match its competitors. The carriers’ discounts are good for travel between Baltimore-Washington International Airport, where troops have been arriving since last week, and anywhere else in the United States. All three of the carriers are offering roundtrip fares in the continental United States to soldiers and their dependents that cost less than $200. “We want our servicemen and women to get home as quickly and as hassle-free as possible because we know their time is limited,” said Joyce Rogge, Southwest’s senior vice president of marketing. Southwest’s offer is valid through Jan. 7, American’s through Feb. 12 and Delta’s through Sept. 15, 2004. Aware of the minor stir caused among soldiers facing high-priced, last-minute fares, the Army said it could have done a better job informing carriers before the R&R program went into effect. “One thing the Army might not have done well was coordinate with commercial airliners,” Army spokesman Joe Burlas said Monday. “We’re glad they’re getting the word now and offering these discounts.” Burlas said more than 700 soldiers a day would be flying in and out of the country under the home leave program. He said that, in addition to Baltimore, the government will eventually begin flying soldiers to Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth and Los Angeles.

To the family of SkySoldier Kyle Thomas, We would like to give our condolences for a brave soldier that lost his life serving his country. My son is also in the same platoon and came from Italy together. He was one of the brave 0ne thousand that jumped into Iraq. We know that God had another job for him, where there will be no more pain with exhaustion. I know that some people think that this was cruel, someone so young with a family to be taken, but those that know God, know that he is too wise to make a mistake. We pray constantly for all the soldiers.I was very worried that it was my son because I hadnot heard from at 4:a.m. our time in a period of time. He finally e-mailed us to tell us not to worry. One of his other friends had been killed in August from an ambush. We will continue to pray for one another and the other soldiers that are all around the world.I received a letter today from him.He said that he hadnot worn his gotten hurt, but didn't specify how.He didn't want us to worry because he is in God's hands. He hasn't been able to wear his boots in a while, maybe this was the problem.Let me write a few words of solitude. "Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free." I'm following the path God laid for me; I took his hand when I heard Him call, I turned my back and left it all. Be not burdened with times of sorrow; I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow; Perhaps my time seemed all too brief; Don't lengthen it He also said that something had been wrong with the communication lines. So, if there is anything we can do for you from Florida, please let us know. Et me close with these words of solitude.

All I could do was pray he wasn't mine. When hearing of Kyle my only feeling then and now is the heartache of knowing his family is feeling the extreme pain and loss that I hope to never feel. To the family of SPC Kyle Thomas. I want to say that I served with your son from the night we jumped into Iraq, March 26, up until I left Aug 29 and when I heared the news here in Italy I cried, not only for him, but for his family. Our company ABLE COMPANY WARLOARDS, are a strong tight family and I know he will be missed. I know I already miss him. I tried to volenteer to meet him in Germany, to fly him home but where I am leaving they would not let me. I send my best wishes to your family, and I want you to know that I will miss my friend, my fellow paratrooper and solider...

They are the photos that were on the video made about the 173rd when the war began. It use to be on this site, I don't think he has the video on here anymore? You need to check out that website, and pass it on for others in your military support group to see.

PFC Chad Henman; Thank you for calling to let me know you were ok. I'm sorry you had to be involved in the incident and I'm glad you weren't hurt more than you were. I know it must be difficult but remember you are strong. I'm proud of you. I love you more than you could possible know and I would gladly take your place if they would let me. Take the leave they offered even if it would keep you from coming home sooner. After what you've just been through, you need to get away for a few days. I would love to see you, but you come first. I will always be here for you if you need to talk. Take care of yourself and remember I love you. Love Always - Mom

As I'm sure many of you are, I find myself increasingly frustrated by slow and inaccurate information regarding our loved ones. Following is the media accout of two recent deaths in Norther Iraq.... "...In the northern city of Kirkuk, a rocket-propelled grenade was fired at a military convoy, killing one soldier from the 173rd Airborne Brigade and injuring two others late Thursday. In Tikrit, north of Baghdad, the hometown of Saddam Hussein, a soldier from the 4th Infantry Division died and another was injured in a fire at an abandoned building Thursday night...." Yet the Department of Defense Press Releases are quite different.... "The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Capt. Robert L. Lucero, 34, of Casper, Wyo., was killed on Sept. 25, 2003, in Tikrit, Iraq. Lucero died and another soldier was injured when they were struck by an improvised explosive device. Lucero was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division Rear Area Operation Center, U.S. Army National Guard, Casper, Wyo." "The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Spc. Kyle G. Thomas, 23, of Topeka, Kan., was killed on Sept. 25, 2003, in Tikrit, Iraq. Thomas was on patrol when an improvised explosive device exploded. He died of injuries sustained in the explosion. Thomas was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, based in Fort Ederle, Italy."

To SPC E. D. JONES Baby, so strong the pain is without you, here I lie back thinking of the times we shared. Sometime I wonder if you ever feel the way I feel. Though sometimes I can be so happy, there`s always a corner that holds you truly within. Life is so hard when you have to be so far away, I can´t even begin to explain how much it hurts, but you should know I love you stronger as the days go by. Even without you by my side I can never forget the wonderful moments we've shared. Hear my heart crying inside, I ask myself why are you not here. No matter how long we are apart, my love grows stronger as we are apart, only the strength of my love can change. So many little tears I cry for you knowing how much I care for you and how much I miss you. Every time I feel myself missing you I know all I need to do is look deep inside my heart and I see you. I miss you more then words can ever explain! Take care of yourself and God bless you and all the other heros down there fighting for our freedom.

I would like to recommend to all interested in Vicenza/Ederle/173rd to check out the "Giornale di Vicenza" (the local paper in Vicenza, Italy) website, http://www.ilgiornaledivicenza.it , which has had extensive coverage of everything related to Caserma Ederle, the 173rd, and anyone who was ever stationed there, including Gen. Abizaid. The entire newspaper is available on line every day after about 1400 Zulu, in pdf format, which allows downloading pages from the newspaper, including archived editions. It requires registration and logging in. The newspaper has an excellent search engine. It is in Italian, but even not understanding Italian you can get a lot from the pictures accompanying the stories. In today's paper (Sept. 28, 2003), for example, there is a mixture of the somber and the happy, with a story on p. 13 about the death of Kyle Thomas, sourced from the original Topeka TV station story. On a happier note, on page 1 and page 13 is a story, with pictures, about the dual proxy wedding which took place in Montana, of David Gaynor, now with the 173rd in Iraq, and Ilaria Caon, who is from Rosà, in the province of Vicenza. I would also like to point out the coverage given to the death in Iraq on July 3, of Lt. Leif Nott, a 2000 West Point grad, who was born in Vicenza to an Ederle soldier and his Vicentine wife. Lt. Nott was with the 1st Bn 10th Cav from Fort Hood. He was never stationed in Vicenza as a soldier. The newspaper covered the story of Lt. Nott on August 30, 2003 (pages 1 and 13) and August 31, 2003 (page 11). The headline of the story on August 31 is "The City Remembers its Officer". The city of Vicenza, Italy.

Bittersweet this war has been -- the loss of Kyle and the sudden arrival of R&R for our troops -- typical gamut of up and down and sorrow and joy -- associated with every new day's pronouncement of "what's happening" in Iraq; how we as family and friends of our proud troops breathe a little easier when we learn our own is safe, yet what a special thing it has become that we share in the grief of a family and a young wife who lose their loved one, when we have never met the young soldier personally. This is a remarkable site -- and provides tremendous support for us all during these difficult times. I too want to thank James R. Bradley for making this possible. I only hope others are as fortunate as the 173rd to have such a site for expressing our joys, grief, concerns, day in and day out, as this situation continues. Blessings to all! Especially to Kyle's family and young wife. Anne Gonzalez

Could some please explain to me how it got to be that Kyle Thomas was killed in Kirkuk driving a humvee. When according to his local newspaper Kyle was walking past a garbage can that exploded. Armytimes news had the soldier from the 173rd as a military police officer. which gave me a sigh of relief, because my son is not. That soldier was from Balad, Iraq. Two different soldiers same outcome.

To the family of Spc Thomas. I am a former Sky Soldier currently stationed at USMAPS. I arrived in Vicenza in July of 02', and was with the unit until 20 June 03'. I was in 1st Plt A Co 2/503, and although I wasn't in the same platoon as Kyle, I saw him everyday, and he always had a smile on his face and something good to say. I cried when I heard of his death, having just seen him the day before I left Iraq. My prayers and those of my family go out to you. Kyle served his country well, and will always be a member of our band of brothers. God Bless.

To the family of Kyle Thomas; Remember, that we all grieve with you. Our son is a 173rd Sky Soldier, stationed in Kirkuk. His name is Roberto Sandifer, from Fort Pierce, Florida. We too, had heard the news, being that my daughter is an officer in the military, also: my son-in-law is a major. Everyone was hoping that this was hoping that it wasn't one of our soldiers and especially my son. We have all become family on this website, thanks to Jim Bradley.I have these Words of Comfort, that someone gave to me. I believe that Kyle would have liked it if he was with us today. He is in heaven looking down praying for his other family that he left behind. Again; we have cried with you and also praying for your strength in the Lord; as well as for others that have experienced this tragedy. "I'm Free" Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free I'm following the path God laid for me; If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembering joy; A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss ah, yes, these things I, too, will miss...... Although; we are strangers we have developed a bond; with support from all the 173rd friends and support team. Please keep the e-mails coming in. God Speed I took His hand when I heard him call, I turned my back and left it all. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief; Don't lengthen it now with undue grief; Lift up your heart and share with me; God wanted me now, He has set me free. Some of the uplifting verses have been left out to give others space to e-mail. Thanks again Mr. Bradley for this site. May God bless you Please continue to pray for each other's families and friends. Thanks, Sherry O'Neill, for contacting me in Florida, another 173rd Airborne's mother stationed Tikrit. Goodnight and continue to support one another. Godspeed

To The Kyle Thomas Family--even though we are strangers, I somehow feel, as parents or spouses of the 173rd soldiers, a bond amongst all of us. Our sympathy is heartfelt and sincere, we can only imagine the grief, as we play it out in our minds each time the news breaks and we await to hear names or the knock on the door. I read the article about your son/husband being a carpenter, a football player, an impressive ballet dancer as well as a newlywed. And then he felt a calling to serve his country after 9/11. He sounded like a very talented, athletic and conscientious young man. You are no doubt very proud of what he has done in his young life. We so badly need good people like him in our world, but tragically he is gone from it now. And I so hope you believe in angels, because I know then he will be with you forever.

What he needs right now is for someone to locate his wallet. He's really worried about it and would like to get it back. Im curently in iraq right now in a.co 508th. Its been pretty bad around here lately,we get ambushed about once every 3 days, thank god no one from the company has died. Im really writing this to let the wives and families know that if u want to see ur soldiers go on r&r and leave, you should write to your congressman and tell him ur situation.I really dont know what's going on with leave or when we're coming back.If they tell u a date it's a lie ,because no one know's when we could be coming back, what's worse is that they dont tell the soldiers anything out here. All higher up does is keep everything a secret like we're gonna go and tell fox when we're coming home... I can tell u that soldiers that just had a baby and that got hurt in combat are going home first, that's all we know but there even being shady on that to so i dont know what's going on.Be safe and if your doing something wrong in the rear, stop .Im sure u know what im talking about. that's all we need is a soldier coming home and finding out something from someone else about someone else... take care. 3 5 7

Love is stronger than death. So, I must be content to know that love is not affected by death- it doesn’t end, it doesn’t diminish, it doesn’t change. Instead, love is immortalized and eternalized through death. And the possibility of that love ever being damaged or broken is eliminated forever. I'll put my trust in love. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends, all who have lost a loved one. May we all stand together with love and support for one another. GOD BLESS THE 173RD and the families of those serving.

I hear about brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents, all the family. I share in your pain and your joys. I also ask we pray for all of our soldiers and their families, to keep them all safe and strong. And let us not forget about our 173rd families who have already been through the same situations. 173rd Family, The love and support shown to our loved ones serving in Iraq is unmeasurable. The support we have for each other on this website is priceless. When we feel down or frustrated, get in touch with a friend or better yet, get out of "self" for just a moment and be of service to someone else who may be hurting too. I don't know about you, but I can't allow myself to think about "waiting for that fateful knock on the door", or being concerned about any notification details that may or may not happen. Our soldiers have lived enough drama in Iraq, they don't need drama from us, especially with R&R leaves happening. Be grateful and thankful. Signed, 2/503rd mom

No one is alone in this world. And especially, no one is alone if you are the proud family member of someone serving with the 173rd. No, the Army doesn't notify everyone who loves a soldier when he is hurt or killed in the war. Not even birthmothers and birthfathers who are still married and who raised their own son get notified if he is married. For example, our son's wife has decided to file for a divorce while he is fighting for his country in Iraq. Nothing in war is right or fair. My prayers go out to all of us because regardless who it was that lost their life and whether or not the Army notifies his birthparents or not, we are greatly saddened by the irreplaceable loss of one of the finest young men in America...GOD BLESS THE 173rd. PRAY HARDER!!! PEACE MEANS: NEVER HAVING TO WORRY IF SOMEONE IS GOING TO KNOCK AT YOUR DOOR AND TELL YOU THAT YOUR BELOVED SON, HUSBAND, OR FATHER HAS MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE FOR HIS COUNTRY. PRAY HARDER NOW!!!

To all families waiting for that fateful knock on the door. At least you will be notified if anything happens to your loved one. I won't be so lucky! If anything happens to my son, I won't be notified. I'll have to get information second or third hand. You see, my son was adopted at birth. I am his birthmother. After years of searching, we were reunited just a couple months before the 9/11 attacks. The army doesn't even know I exist! If his adoptive family remembers to contact me, I'll get the news. This website has been my source of information, many times my only source of information on the 173rd.

To my precious son, J E F F R E Y K U P I S C H - 2/503-MORTAR AND ALL OF THE 173 FAMILY - Our thoughts & prayers are with each one of you during this time of deep sorrow over the loss & injuries suffered by your unit today. You are truly the bravest, most heroic men & women I've had the honor to be associated with & pray for. Please know that you are not forgotten - you are greatly loved & prayed for. YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN THIS! Families all over the USA & the world have united in prayer for the brave soldiers of the 173rd. To the families involved in this recent ambush please let us know what we can do to help ease the pain, besides prayer. Your son did not die in vain - he was a HERO - just as the rest of the 173rd continue to be. May God's strength, peace & wisdom surround & encompass you as your loved ones gather to pay their respect to your son. It is due him - respect & honor for the sacrifice he made to free these people who knew no freedom. FREEDOM ISN'T FREE! No greater love hath a man than this - that a man lay down his life for another. Your son's love for freedom unfortunately carried the ultimate price - a price of great love & sacrifice. The same goes for those who were injured in the ambush. We pray for your speedy, total recovery to 100% from the top of your head to the soles of your feet! Every bit whole! Let's light a candle in memory of all of those who have given their lives in this war & thank God for bringing strength, wisdom, peace & joy to their families and for a quick resolve that will secure peace & stability to this foreign land & bring our loved ones all home safe & sound! If one can put a thousand to flight & 2 can put ten thousand to flight - just think how many of the enemy will be exposed, captured & stopped if we all join in prayerful agreement! You are fighting the good fight of faith every day! Tho a thousand may fall on your left & ten thousand fall on your right side, it will not come near the 173rd any more in Jesus Name. Only with your eyes will you behold the reward of the wicked - & you are not the wicked - you are the blessed, redeemed, loved & cherished ones of God. He will never leave you nor forsake you, nor leave without support - He will not, He will not, He certainly will NOT! May the wisdom of God fill your hearts & mind and give you the discernment you require to carry out your orders & duties - and keep you strongly focused on the job He sent you to do. He will bring you safely home if you put your trust & confidence in Him - that's all faith is... being fully persuaded that THAT which God has said, He will do - & He'll do it for you just because He loves you! So, carry on, thou good & faithful Skysoldier! Your efforts are not in vain. God knows & sees everyone of you - even the hairs on your head are numbered. When you look into the skies & see how perfectly He has orchestrated the universe, remember - YOU are so precious to Him - & He will uphold you with His mighty victorious right hand & cover you in His protection with His wings. God Bless YOU! Stay strong! Encourage yourself in the Lord - discouragement will only weaken you. You need your strength, so stay encouraged - encourage each other & bring comfort to your brother or sister soldier. We will continue to stand guard in prayer as watchmen on the walls, praying without ceasing, presenting you & the 173rd before the Lord. I love you & am honored to pray for you. You are all invited over for dinner when you get home! Especially Lindberg & the anyone else who wants to come to Chicago! Bring your own meat - steak - whatever!! Grant would be so happy to cook dinner in your honor!! You can all swim in our pool & roast marshmallows in the firepit.YOu are more than welcome to come - be fed, swim & hang out when you're in the area - ask Jeff for our # & give us 24 hrs notice. You are family & most welcome - ANYTIME!! We'll send more packages soon. I contacted Jeff's junior high school who is seriously considering adopting the 173rd as their family to send Care Packages - just for you in Northern Iraq. The High School is considering this endeavor as well - not to be outdone by the younger students. Realize that there are people back home that love you & appreciate all your efforts in Northern Iraq - not just Bagdad. We are so proud of each one of you. May God's peace surround & keep you as you each help to maintain the peace. As you give, you shall receive... Love, the Kupisch Family

I too was on pins and needles all day. Every time the door bell or the phone rang I had to take a deep breath. This being the beginning of the Jewish New Year I reflect on the year that has passed. All I can think about is the time our Sky Soldiers are spending in Iraq. For THIS holiday season I will have special prayers for all the 173rd and their families. In Jewish litergy there is a prayer for healing called the misheberach. I will say it for all those who have lost loved ones during this conflict. The bible teaches us that if we save even one person (even and Iraqui) it is as if we saved the entire world. For this the entire world should be thankful for all the men and women serving in the armed forces.

173rd Airborne Famlies: My deepest sympathies for the families of the brave solier who paided the ultimate cost today for our freedom. You are in my prayers and in my heart. We have all waited all day hoping to not hear the terrible news, jumping each time the phone rang or there was a knock at the door. Everyone was afraid to leave the house for fear they would miss the news. My family has not heard anything, I guess no news is good news. To the family that did receive the terrible news today, your family is in our prayers, you son is in our heart. michelle

Dear 173rd soldiers and families: I am so terribly sorry for your lose today...my heart aches for you....God Bless you and know that God is on your side. The dear soldier who passed is with God now and he can be a guardian angel to pray to. My son in law Tom Csala is with 173rd and is in Germany right now for special training for Sergeant ( I forget the formal name) and I feel very grateful for my daughter that she does not have to sit and wait in agony for any news.......I am actually feeling a bit guilty for not having to stress out like the rest of the families....So I will pray for you all for your comfort. Also, if any soldier needs a ride from Baltimore airport to any point in MD, DE PA or NJ, I live in Northern MD and would be happy to pick him or her up when they come home for R & R . It is the least I can do. Just email me. Maybe we should start a fund to collect money to buy soldiers connecting flights that cannot afford them? God Bless all our heroes in the 173rd and in all of the military.

I don't know about the rest of the 173rd families but I'm about ready to visit the nearest bar and get drunk out of mind because of not knowing which dear soldier was killed or hurt and I don't even drink. May all of us take comfort in the fact that we are all in this together and have lots of support. To my dear Ranger Son, SSGT. Paul Wiseman, you are loved my many and we sure wish you were able to telephone. By the way, your brother shocked me today. I was in my office and all of a sudden he was next to me after being in Alaska for 3 months. Very wonderful surprise. Stay safe precious son! Mom

To the family of the 173rd hero who lost his life, God be with you and please know our thoughts and prayers are with you. How ironic, the sorrow and elation of this day. Nearly 200 soldiers are on American soil. To those families who had loved ones arrive today ENJOY every minutes. We have no idea if our son is one of them. He phoned his son's mother Thursday morning at 4 a.m. and all we know is she and his son will pick him up at the airport. He wants to surprise everyone else. We're not questioning her so we don't spoil the surprise Josh wants. Needless to say, we've been on the edge of our seats waiting to see if he walks in the door today. God Bless all the 173rd families and thank you to all those "moms" who have e-mailed me and sent me photos. We are truly a united family for our soldiers!

173rd Soldier quoted in recent Yahoo! news. :)U.S. Soldiers Arrive in Md. for Vacation By WILEY HALL, Associated Press Writer LINTHICUM, Md. - The first U.S. troops to get a two-week vacation from their work in Iraq (news - web sites) landed on the East Coast early Friday and were looking forward to seeing their families, eating home-cooked food and getting some sleep. "The first thing is, get a good nap," said Pvt. Bryan Harper, 23, a member of 173rd Airborne Division from Portland, Ore. "Two weeks is not a lot of time to spend on leave," he said. "I've learned on leave you don't make plans because they never work out. Just spend time with family and friends." Harper and the other 191 soldiers who arrived at Baltimore-Washington International Airport about 6 a.m. are the first wave in the military's largest home leave program since the Vietnam war. A dozen family members waited at the airport to greet the soldiers, most of whom were catching connecting flights to their home cities. After waving to TV cameras, some pushed through a crowd of reporters to get to the pay phones. A sign read: "Welcome Home U.S. Armed Forces. Thanks for Serving Our Country." "It's good to be back," said Pvt. Larry Burns, 20, of Burlington, Vt. He was looking forward to seeing his wife and his daughter, Alexia, who was born two weeks ago. Pfc. James Short, 23, of Pittsburgh, cradled his 8-week-old daughter in the airport, saying simply, "It feels great." Staff Sgt. Christina DiFlaurio, 36, of El Paso, Texas, was looking forward to surprising her daughter, who turns 16 on Oct. 2. "I hope to be there when she gets home from school, sitting on the couch, saying, 'Hi!'" DiFlaurio said. In her knapsack was a stuffed camel she bought in Kuwait as a gift. The group left on Thursday for a 16-hour trip that included a stop in Germany, where 78 soldiers got off the plane for leave in Europe. The announcement Thursday of the leave plan stirred excitement among families of troops serving in Iraq, but many said the two-week break will bring heartbreak when it's time for their loved ones to return to duty. The program was ordered to provide relief and boost morale for forces serving 12-month tours of duty in the hot, dangerous and sometimes primitive conditions in Iraq, as well as those in support roles in neighboring countries. That means it's available to the vast majority of the more than 130,000 troops deployed there, officials said. The program offers 15-day vacations, with some transportation paid, for every soldier, sailor, airman or Marine staying in region for a year, said Marine Maj. Pete Mitchell, a Central Command spokesman. The government pays for the flights to Germany and Baltimore. Troops continuing on from there to their homes or other places will cover that expense. Eventually the military hopes to also have flights to Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth and Los Angeles. Yearlong rotations were ordered during the summer for most troops as violent resistance to the occupation spiraled and the Bush administration found little success in getting more nations to contribute forces. The subject of deployment lengths has been sensitive, with some soldiers and their families complaining bitterly about delays in their homecoming, repeated deployments and the extension of tours. "First of all, rest and recuperation ... is essential just because what they're being asked to do is pretty darn difficult," Mitchell said of the troops. "But it's more than that; we also believe rest and recuperation will improve readiness." He said the mental and physical break from Iraq will make forces "that much more alert, that much ... more on top of the game." Bob Muller, president of the Vietnam Veterans of American Foundation, took an opposite view, saying he recalls that there was a disproportionate number of casualties among those back from leave in Vietnam compared to the rest of the troops. He said troops go through a rigorous and intense period preparing for deployment, then take time to adapt to a combat zone. "To get yanked out of that is such a trip in your own head ... it makes it really hard to come back in," he said. "It was sort of like you broke stride ... you're distracted." Still, he said, he would never say he was against giving leaves. "My memory of my R&R experience is very vivid," said Muller, who served in the war in the late 1960s with the Marines. "The night before departure was just raucous, exuberant, everybody was pumped. A week later, coming back, nobody said a word — and I mean it was absolute stone silence." ___

Silent Anguish! Agonizing fear! Flowing tears while reading the release about the recent ambush in Kirkuk! Anxiously hovering over the telephone; nervously surfing the channels on tv for news; frantically searching the internet in hopes to learn more about OUR SONS/HUSBANDS/FATHERS involved in this recent attack. We are not strangers to these emotions as we sit helplessly on the sidelines time and time again to learn of another son killed in action; another son wounded. Not 'a soldier' from the 173rd, OUR SOLDIER; one of our extended family members! We grieve together as we're forced to face the reality of war and the ultimate price paid for the freedoms that are so recklessly taken for granted by many. My heart, my love, my prayers go out to the families directly involved. Know that you are not alone in your grief. And to my own flesh and blood soldier/son, SPC Phillip Hatton, who's there in Kirkuk: I love you more than life itself! Stand tall and comfort one another as you say goodbye to your fallen comrade. I love you and I'm so proud of you, "MOM"

I just heard that someone from the 173rd was killed by an RPG attack. I can only say that I feel so so very sorry for the family that will be given this horrible news. My brother was killed that very same way. I hate this and I want it to end. I can't handle this anymore. This makes me hurt even more and it brings that horrible day, August 2nd, back to me and I am just hurting so bad right now. I'm at work and I think that I'll be leaving early before anyone comes in to see my eyes all swelled up. The name hasn't been stated yet. I only hope that all the support and love goes to that family during this time. The 173rd family has been so good to me and I know that they will take this family under it's wings like they did for me. I love you 173rd!!! Never forget that!!! Jessica Hebert

To all the families of the 173rd, by now everyone is aware of the upcoming r&r for our soldiers. It's true, It's true. The men got R&R. I just left post and saw about 6 or so guys in DCU's just come into the food court. Some of them still had their duffle bags with them. They all had big smiles on their faces and you could tell they were happy to be here. Once I went outside to leave post, I saw one guy who apparently just came back with a big bundle of flowers. WELCOME HOME MEN! No, the men don't get to choose when they come home. It is up to their unit in which order they are coming home. I don't even have an clue as to when my husband will get his 15 days of R&R, but just knowing he will get it, brings a huge smile to my face and is making my 5 year old very happy. You would think it is Christmas time around my house with how happy she is. So, for those of you whose son or husband wasn't in the first group, hang tight. They will be home soon.

It is true that our Sky Soldiers are getting R&R, how the dust will settle and how many people actually come home is the unknown. But I hope that the wives whose husbands are not in this first group (who should be in Vicenza already, if not today) will not begrudge those women whose husbands where CHOSEN to come. The OML (order of merit list) was not made by the soldiers. It was made by the command. So just be happy for them. I know that my husband is not in any of the first groups but I am just happy that someone will be with thier loved one.

To Family Member of Soldiers in 1/508 B Company 2plt -- My son Brian (2Lt) is the platoon leader for this platoon. I received a letter from him dated 9/9/2003 and an email on 9/17/2003. In the Email he stated they were still in Tuz and that not much was going on. He said they were basically bored. Personally, I'll take boredom over them in danger any day!

What wonderfully encouraging news -- we pray it is true! It certainly will make our fall, Thanksgiving, Christmas -- everything if there is hopes of R&R coming the way of all these fine young men and women. There is a light at the end of the tunnel! Let's hope it comes to pass. . .Blessings on all you precious families with loved ones over "there". Anne Gonzalez - proud parent of a 173rder
