If you are actually in touch with your soldier, you have probably been told by him/her that they have been told they ARE getting out of there by December--THIS IS NOT a rumor I have in fact been told the same thing by my soldier. How do you explain all of these soldiers saying the same thing???? But like always this is subject to change.

I live in Washington State and the big news here today is that quite a few reserves and National Guard folks are being deployed to Iraq, but, more importantly, 4,000 soldiers in the Stryker (sp?) force from Fort Lewis are going to Iraq. You can read the stories in the Seattle Times or the News Tribune (a Tacoma newspaper). Is this the unit that was supposed to take the place of the 173rd? I am not sure. The story is an official one that was announced by the commander of the unit at Fort Lewis. Once again, I am not sure what this means for our troops, but if you are interested, please do read the stories from our local news papers. They are on line and have run for the past couple of days.

I would like to tell everyone who is reading this that the rumor about the 173rd redeploying in December was not a rumor. Plans were indeed being made for our return but they were being made around certain possibilities that are still uncertain. As for now plans have been put on hold because certain things have not gone as hoped. Try to remain positive and don't search for someone to blame for things not going as planned. This is a war and nothing goes as planned.

Col. West...this quote I found sounds so fitting right now "Let us have faith that right makes might and in that faith let us to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it" 27 February 1860 Abraham Lincoln. You dared to do your duty to protect the lives of our soldiers. You should be commended for your actions not condemned for them. I'm would think that the actions you took were far less damaging than those who tortured Jessica Lynch and Killed how many of our US Service Men & Women....."Have they forgotten how it felt that day?" Welcome to you and your family....please find peace within this unit

COL WEST: Dear Sir, Welcome to our family. It is soldiers like you that we are proud to have. I will sleep better tonight knowing that another committed American is alongside my son in a place where I cannot protect him. I commend you for utilzing measures appropriate to defend our husbands, daddys, sons and daughters. I believe it ahs been reorted more than once that this is a war against terrorism. The idea of "rules" in such a matter seem contradictory. I patiently await stories of the "opposition " exercising restraint and etiquette towards US soldiers. You have my support and total commitment in anything I can do to be a good soldier for you and your family here in the US and especially in Texas. If the truth be known, I bet President Bush is proud of you too. Again, Thank you so very much. Proud member of the 173rd family and Proud Mother of a Sky Soldier. DD Clark

I think it's a shame that a man trying to stop two Iraqis from murdering our soldiers would be charged with a crime. This is a war! Considering the reports of extensive resistance in the upcoming days, I am sure the soldiers of the 173rd welcome LTC West into the family. My son has always expressed his main concern for his men. You will be a brother in the 173rd, and best of luck with the charges. When "intelligence" seems to be the word most tossed around, I applaud you for thinking of the soldiers in your command. This is an unconventional war - the judge advocate should ask the 300 plus families who have lost loved ones what they may think is appropriate. God Bless you and welcome to your new family. Tense times ahead - be prepared and stay focused and watch your backs. The "Fury from the Sky" Rules. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To the lady concerned about the delays in receiving the Combat Parachutist Badges and CIB - the regulation that covers all this is AR 600-8-22. It is long, convoluted and confusing. But in a nutshell, the Brigade must receive credit for making a Combat Assault into enemy-held territory (Para. 7-25) before any individual soldiers can get credit. This credit requires decisions be made in Iraq by at least a 3-star General, be forwarded to DA for review and confirmation, and then approved by the Secretary of the Army. It does not require Congressional approval, but it does not happen overnight. Once the Brigade receives the designation, then the soldiers will receive their awards under Paragraph 8-10.g. in the same regulation. It may appear to be slow, but it is imperative to protect those that received this incredible award previously to make sure that all the criteria are documented to make sure 173rd's involvement in this historical event is chronicled properly and the award is not tarnished for future generations of Sky Soldiers. They'll get their awards and I would just as soon they receive them in Vicenza where family, friends and grateful citizens can give them their due!

I don't usually get involved in the discussions but this time I have to say I'm very disappointed in the army action against Lt. Col. West. Maybe it should be put into perspective and we should think about what was done to Pfc Jessica Lynch and many others who have suffered at the hands of the ememy. It's not much of a contest when only one side plays by the rules. I'm all for anything that gets my grandson and the rest of these young men and women home with their bodies intact.

To the person interested in sending toys to kids in Iraq: There is a drive going on - organized by an officer in Iraq. Three are several stores participating or you can send directly to the officer. I learned of it on www.overstock.com. if you go to that website you will see a link for sending purchased items to iraq. You can send toys for the children or you can send items to the soldiers. I think overstock is offering free shipping on anything purchased for the drive. Check it out if you are interested.

In regards to the situation involving LTC West, first welcome to the 173d.I hope your assignment will be a positive one.I also feel the 4th ID staff judge advocate should be assigned to combat patrols so he may have a more realistic view of the potential harm to US troops versus the "intimadation" of a not so innocent Iraqi policeman.A primary responsibility of a combat officer is the welfare of the troops in his command. The fact that LTC West may have indeed prevented an attack on US soldiers should far out weigh the "rights" of a man who seems to be our enemy.I wish LTC West good luck with the charges and want him to know the line soldiers not only understand but respect him for his dedication to his troops.

What a great way to start the day - reading that letter from the airplane passenger. Thanks for sending that it. TO MY FELLOW 173RD FAMILY MEMBERS, I am very disturbed by the plight of LTC Alan West as the result of his actions in Iraq. I have sent emails to my Congressional delegation to ask them to intervene - he certainly made a mistake, but he should NOT be court-martialed and forced to give up his military retirement one year short of 20 years. And the fact that he saved the lives of American soldiers without doing bodily injury to the individual being interrogated should be taken into account. I for one am convinced that this unconventional war demands unconventional methods. If it prevents another soldier's family being notified in the middle of the night, then let's do it. Please help this young man retain his career - we need him protecting our sons and daughters. An old soldier!

Army files charge in combat tactic By Rowan Scarborough THE WASHINGTON TIMES The Army has filed a criminal assault charge against an American officer who coerced an Iraqi into providing information that foiled a planned attack on U.S. soldiers. Lt. Col. Allen B. West says he did not physically abuse the detainee, but used psychological pressure by twice firing his service weapon away from the Iraqi. After the shots were fired, the detainee, an Iraqi police officer, gave up the information on a planned attack around the northern Iraqi town of Saba al Boor. But the Army is taking a dim view of the interrogation tactic. An Army official at the Pentagon confirmed to The Washington Times yesterday that Col. West has been charged with one count of aggravated assault. A military source said an Article 32 hearing has been scheduled in Iraq that could lead to the Army court-martialing Col. West and sending him to prison for a maximum term of eight years. Some soldiers are privately questioning the Army's drive to punish the officer for an interrogation technique that likely is used regularly to get information from terrorists. Col. West's unit in Iraq operates amid extreme danger. Fighters loyal to ousted Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein are poised at any moment to kill the soldiers in ambushes using explosive devices, guns and rocket-propelled grenades. Col. West, 42, says he pressured the Iraqi after taking into account the dangerous environment and the risk to his soldiers' lives. In response to an e-mail from The Times, Col. West, a 19-year veteran, gave his version of events. Col. West is a member of the 4th Infantry, the Fort Hood, Texas, division occupying areas around Tikrit, Saddam's hometown and an area infested with loyalists of the former regime. An informant reported that there was an assassination plot against Col. West, an artillery officer working with the local governing council in Saba al Boor. On Aug. 16, guerrillas attacked members of the colonel's unit who were on their way to Saba al Boor. An informant told the soldiers that one person involved in the attack was a town policeman. Col. West sent two sergeants to detain the policeman, who was placed in a detention center near the Taji air base. The interrogators had no luck at first, so Col. West decided to take over the questioning. "I asked for soldiers to accompany me and told them we had to gather information and that it could get ugly," Col. West said in his e-mail. He said his soldiers "physically aggress[ed]" the prisoner. A subsequent investigation resulted in nonjudicial punishment for them in the form of fines. After the physical "aggress" failed, Col. West says he brandished his pistol. "I did use my 9 mm weapon to threaten him and fired it twice. Once I fired into the weapons clearing barrel outside the facility alone, and the next time I did it while having his head close to the barrel. I fired away from him. I stood in between the firing and his person. "I admit that what I did was not right but it was done with the concern of the safety of my soldiers and myself." Col. West said he informed his superior of his actions. The incident lay dormant until the Army conducted an overall command-climate investigation of the brigade. The investigation turned up the interrogation technique, and Col. West was charged with one count of aggravated assault. Col. West said the gunshots spurred the Iraqi to provide the location of the planned sniper attack and the names of three guerrilla fighters. Col. West says the 4th Infantry's staff judge advocate, the unit's prosecutor, is offering him two choices: resign short of gaining retirement benefits or face court-martial. Article 128 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice describes assault in these terms: "Any person subject to this chapter who attempts or offers with unlawful force or violence to do bodily harm to another person, whether or not the attempt or offer is consummated, is guilty of assault and shall be punished as a court-martial may direct." The Army relieved Col. West of his battalion command and has placed him in the 173rd Airborne Brigade, which is attached to the 4th Infantry in Kirkuk. Said his wife, Angela, who lives in Fort Hood: "My husband is a top-of-the-line officer. My husband is an African-American. He has had to overcome a number of things to get where he is." "I accept being retired at the grade of major and paying whatever fine required, but resignation and prison seems an attempt to destroy me," Col. West says. "All I wish is to go away, re-establish my family and retain some of my dignity."

NANCY, I read your post about wanting to donate clothing to the fire victims in California. Very thoughtful!!! Please email me and I might be able to get you some information. Our local volunteer fire department took a couple of trucks down there. We're in Northern California. I was talking to one of the fireman's wife today. She might know, or I can contact someone at our fire department. I'll see what I can find out. Also, I've been working very hard on a fundraising project for our local troops to share Christmas packages with their squads. I wish I would've thought to include a toy drive for the Iraqi kids--that's a great idea!

The web site, at www.chiefwiggles.blog-city.com, details what type of toys to send, the mailing address and also includes testimonials by Holton and photos of the actual distribution process. Since the posting about the toy drive on his Web site, Holton said he has received more than 700 boxes of toys from people around the world.

Parents of PFC John Hart -- your courage is exemplary! Thank you for sharing a bit of who you are and your willingness to reach out to John's fellow soldiers who are hurting over the loss of your son. Know that all the way from Alaska, we hold you in our thoughts and prayers, especially now, and that we will count you and John as part of our extended "family" always! As those involved in the 173rd, we are all obviously better people for having known John directly, or simply for having known of John -- and of D. Bernstein -- God bless you! anne gonzalez

To all those concerned about priority mail, I just want to offer my input. All APO addresses go to the Deleware post office. If you send your mail, be it packages or letters , priority, it gets to the Deleware office around two days sooner. Regardless, it still takes the same amount of time to go from there to Iraq. So, regular mail gets to Mosul/Iraq in around 7-10 business days. If you send it priority, which in some cases is cheaper, it may get there in as little as 5-7 days. As a safe bet, you want to send packages that will fit in a "mail sack." Around the size of a duffle bag. Otherwise, they will be delayed. I hope that this will give some people a better idea of how to send their loved ones packages. God bless all our loved ones serving our country and our freedom, proud wife of a sky soldier, Mrs. Jennifer Gonzalez

The John Hart family is seeking information on the family or whereabouts of two individuals wounded in action in July/August: Sheider/Scheider (sp?) and Forhtus (sp?), both probably PFCs. I have searched Google without success. As letters from John are accumulated from friends and family we realize that he wanted us to contact the family of Sheider in particular because he could not bring himself to write them himself. Further, if there are injured members of 173rd at Walter Reed or in the Washington area, please let me know as I would like to call on them while in the area and sit with them.

To the people that became very upset about my e-mail, I had no intention of pointing fingers. Please forgive me. Everyone has a right to freedom of speech, religion or whatever they desire. You have the right to serve or not to serve whom or whom not you would like. I didn't want anyone to misinterpret what I had written. We are a military family dated back to World War1 and 2.,Korea. Vietnam War, Gulf War and now, the war in Iraq. My young children are ranking officers. We love our soldiers and are proud of what they have done and continue doing for everyone. I am talking about not only my children, but all of the brave soldiers. My first husband served three deployments in Vietnam. He lost his life after re-enlisting. We had four young babies, the oldest one was 5. So, you see, I didn't mean any harm. Maybe, I should have used better choices words.

To the family of PFC John Hart. My son, PFC Jonathan Matthews, HHC Mortars 2/503rd called home yesterday. His voice was so sad that my heart still aches. I immediately asked what was wrong. He told me he had lost his friend. His friend's name was Hart. He hurt because he was gone and my son didn't even know he was headed out on the same type of mission my son was at the front of. He came back looking for Hart and was told the crushing news. My son said" Mom, he's gone and I didn't even know it." The helplessness in his voice is what every mother wants to console. I promised him I would somehow contact his friends family. He didn't know Hart's first name because he said "He was just Hart." I hope you find this message because Jonathan said he wanted you to know he misses Hart. I pray for your family to find the strength and courage to survive such a loss. My boy is 19 and an only child. He is a big time prankster and reports that his SGT. keeps him on a leash. I have a good idea why. I am proud our two sons lives passed. I'm sure my clown/PFC Matthews put a smile on your hero's face many a times. May God be with you and your family and may you always feel John watching over you. Sweet Dreams and God Bless You PFC John Hart, From: DD Clark and PFC Jonathan Matthews

I have been sending all of my packages from Atlanta using Priority Mail from Atlanta. It costs less than regular Priority Mail and the weight limit is 70 lbs., although I am not sure what the dimensions need to be... I've never sent the packages using regular postage, but the weight limit may be higher. Hope this helps! ***I forgot to mention that my packages have been taking about 7-10 days to arrive, which is ideal if you are sending any baked goods. Of course, if they have any problems (or overflow of mail) in Iraq it is not guaranteed that they will arrive within a week.

KIRKUK, Iraq (AFP) - A US military post in the northern city of Kirkuk was hit by five Katyusha rockets, sparking relatiatory US shell fire, Iraqi police reported, without saying if there were any casualties. AFP/File Photo They said a school in Kirkuk was also hit by a mortar Tuesday, and a bomb exploded in front of a dry cleaners used by the US forces. "A US position located behind the technical college at the entrance of Kirkuk was hit by five Katyusha rockets," Lieutenant Ammar Hassan al-Abbadi said. "The attack happened at 9:00 pm (1800 GMT) and the rockets were fired from the road heading toward Tikrit," said Abbadi. US helicopters were flying overhead after the attack. "Three hours later, American forces fired shells, with a range of seven to 10 kilometers (four to six miles), simultaneously from three positions in the town..," said the police officer. "It is the first time since the (March-April) war that American forces have fired shells in Kirkuk. "The area targeted is uninhabited. The American forces considered it a military target and attacked it with the aim of destroying the suspected bases of their assailants," said Abbadi. He was unable to say if there were any casualties. A mortar was also fired at a school in the east of the town, said police commander Khattab Abdallah Aref. "The attack took place at 8:45 pm (1745 GMT) while the school was empty and there were therefore no casualties," he said. In a third attack, a bomb exploded outside a dry cleaners used by US forces in Kirkuk, he said. "The bomb exploded around 9:30 pm (1830 GMT) when the shop was closed. There were no casualties as the street was empty at the time," he said. He said the bombing appeared to be a warning to the owner to stop working for the coalition. On Monday, two car-borne assailants fired rocket-propelled grenades at the cleaners, badly damaging it but causing no casualties. Kirkuk, 225 kilometres (140 miles) north of Baghdad, has become an active front in the war between the US military and insurgents since the start of the month, where violence previously had focused further south in the region around Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s hometown of Tikrit.

Does anyone have any pictures of "C" Co. 2/503. Looking for pictures of my nephew, PFC Thomas LaBriola. It been awhile since we have heard from him or have seen any pictures of his unit. The 173rd is doing a great job. We support and are very proud of our sky soldiers. Has anyone heard anything about mailing Christmas packages to the soldiers. Someone told me that all packages for the troops need to be mailed no later than 11/3/03 for a guaranteed Christmas delivery. Also, I made a mistake this past weekend. I mailed an extra heavy package 64lbs. to my nephew. I thought that the more he had, the more he could share. The post office told me that packages that heavy sometimes get put to the side and scrutinized more. As she said "No one wants to pick up that heavy box" and it can't be put on top of any lighter boxes as they will crush. I guess that makes sense. It takes them alot longer to reach them. She suggested several lighter boxes. Just some information I thought I would pass this along. God Bless the 173rd and keep all the soldiers safe.

We pray you are well, getting all the packages and letters that are headed that way and that your number will come up for R&R soon. The Army is adding Atlanta to its destinations this weekend so with luck you will land right here in town when you get to come home. The Varsity and Krispy Kreme are on the way to the house!! Attn: Sgt. Rene Corella 1st Plt. Aco 2/503: Hey! Long time with no news, I hope (if this gets to you) all is OK with you... I'm sure you'd enjoy the weather in Paris, it's coooold, we even get below 0 in the morning. All is just about fine here (besides I miss you like crazy), classes are OK and very interesting, work is going fine, family & friends too (everyone says Bonjour!), the only thing is I'm getting pretty much sick, that doesn't help during Ramadan. I should get better soon. Anyway, after all you are going thrue, it would be real selfish for me to complain about that!!! ;-) No big deal. Don't forget all I've been telling and writing you, nothing has changed. I count on you to take good care of you, same thing for all of you great soldiers. Besitos nino!! Your little B.

Does this mean that the non-Christian soldiers and family members have no idea what is happening? Please think to what the basic principles of Christianity are and practice them. We are all in this together and it pains me to see this divisiveness once again. And if you really think only Christians understand, study the Koran and other holy scriptures first. In order to uphold your God you need not tear down others'. Furthermore, this is exactly the message that our government is trying to send to the Iraqi people who are divided between the Kurdish, Shi'ite, Sunni, etc. - that they can live together in harmony despite differing beliefs. Now let's support our soldiers by reminding them that we are all seeking to understand, not selectively but as a people. I am sure most soldiers do not think of each other as Christian or Jewish or Muslim or atheist on the battlefield, but as brothers working together for the same cause. I want to emphasize that I support the expression of religious beliefs, just NOT at the expense of others who do not uphold the same theology.

Why discriminate? There are soldiers of all faiths including being non-religious whatsoever fighting over there. How can one discriminate humanbeings as "only christians" can understand, etc. etc. What is wrong with you people! Don't you realize that when you speak the way you do you are no different than those so-called fanatic radicalist muslims themselves! isn't time to wake up now? our loved ones are there going thru tough and real stuff! Get real! I'm so disappointed and devastated! I sure this reaction will attract more attention than the one that separates humans and eliminates everybody else, and bring it all down to "christianity". What happened to these people fighting for freedom, our very freedoms for crying outloud. Letting gays get married, letting handicapped ones be more accepted in our societies. Get over the prejudice! If you wanna use the name of God to boost morale for everyone, do it wisely!

The article Mr. Glen Bayer posted on this website from the Pioneer Press was a follow up to the article the newspaper came out and did with me last spring when the 173rd jumped into Iraq. I wasn't sure if I should tell Josh's story of the Taza ambush to the press but am very glad I did now. Because of that article, I have had calls from other Minnesota parents whose sons and daughters are with the 173rd. It made my son in Iraq that much closer to me because I am now able to express my thoughts, feelings and fears with those other parents. Someone else forwarded that article to the parents of John Hart and David Bernstein and I have been able to connect with them. It restores my faith in humanity when you are surrounded by strangers you are now proud to call "family". Thank you! Gwen

Dearest Soldiers First of all, to those of you who were in the convoy attacked outside Taza, I want to thank you for your quick action in helping my son, Joshua Sams. I have spoken with Josh and heard the horrifying account of that night. Even though the news and tv have spoken with me, it doesn't given enough credit to LT David Bernstein and the other family of soldiers who helped my son that night. Receiving word that my son was injured was hard enough but my heart aches for both families that have lost loved ones. I will be attending a funeral at Arlington Cemetery next week and I don't know how I will be able to look the Harts and Bernsteins in the eye without feeling guilt that my son is alive and theirs are not. I have been in contact with the families and at the same time, can't wait to embrace them and hold them close. I am the Family Readiness Coordinator in Anoka, Minnesota but no amount of training prepares you to be on the receiving end of this type of news. I do know that without the support of my own guard family and former strangers that are now friends, I could not have made it through the last few days. Thank you! God Bless all of our soldiers - my prayers will continue until you are all home in your family's arms. Gwen Sams

SPC WHITELATCH, NATHAN D. A.CO 2/503- Hey kid! I hope this message reaches you in good spirits. Its getting close to the end of October, most of the leaves have fallen, and every morning for the past week or so frost has covered the ground. The salmon spawn I used to tell you about has yet to happen 'cause the river is too shallow. If we don't get any rain quick I don't think we'll have a chance at 'em this fall. But all is well, hunting season is right around the corner, and the "mad cow/deer" disease that plagued our stock last year has been almost completely diminished. I resent one of your packages yesterday (Fri. Oct. 24) hopefully it gets through this time. As far as work is concerned- my crew will more than likely get laid off by mid-end Nov.; no worries though, I've already been offered several positions in the business you know that I know best-BARTENDING. So, the archaeologist/philosopher/paratrooper has to fall back on the alcohol crutch once again. And while I'm perched behind the bar 'til at least Spring, I decided to go back to school and snag another degree. May as well go back and enjoy the life of a professional student/drinker before I get too old. Hell my other kid brother graduates in Dec., so I be looking and waiting for a reliable companion. My girlfriend has her limits- she is talented in many areas, drinking and carrying on is not one of them. I'm doing much better since last we spoke, so with all this extra time on my hands you will be hearing from me more often. I regret that I've neglected my writing duties in the recent past, but at the time things were dark and nasty- 'n I kept busy trying to fix things. My correspondence would have been all too depressing to send to you- nothing that would spark up a smile or release a much needed chuckle anyway. I look forward to hearing from you, and seeing you home, safe. Take care little brother. Gavin

ATTN:----> SPC VOLPE 2Plt Bco 2/503: SOLDIER!!!!! This is my third warning. Feeling a sense of generosity, no additional sanctions will be listed at this time, provided you reply to the charges with in 24 hours (uh, duh you are guilty, cuz you told me of your actions in your own email - see previous post if you forgot LOL). Essentially, Soldier, your only option is to is appear for sentencing. If the Court of Terri does not receive an official and timely reply from you, I will have no other recourse but to employ additional consequences and sanctions. Your situation is looking more bleak every passing second. SWAK, Terri

I know we have said this before, but please practice operational security on this message board. I understand your excitement in reporting that a date is "rumored" for redeployment of the unit. Remember that there are many bad seeds out there who can potentially be able to do harm by hearing about a potential redeployment date. You can use your imagination on that one.

I sit here on a Friday night fresh from my daughters football game, where I had the privilege to sit beside of my son, Ssgt Shawn Grueser, while the National Anthem was playing, watching him with his hand over his heart and at the end he kissed his fingers and waved them to heaven and said, "That is for my boys!" How he misses the 173rd and all the brave soldiers in Kirkuk. I have heard the stories of near misses, and Pray for all of your safe returns...hopefully in the near future. Dear paratroopers and support staff, you have run the good race and have done a job well that no one anticipated your having to do. You are indeed the heroes of America, and I am so proud of your accomplishments. and have written to several news medias that you SHOULD be allowed to brag about them, you have earned the right to spread the good news, that you truly are making a difference in the lives of the people in Iraq. If nationally known correspondents could ride into Baghdad on the back of tanks like John Wayne, the 173rd Airborne Paratroopers deserve a chance to tell their stories. God Bless you and keep your safe. Grammie and Shawn HOOHAH!!!

I know you're excited, but having gone through many of these deployments, could we please wait until we receive official confirmation before we post dates for return. This unnecessarily gets everyone excited when it may be nothing more than another unsubstantiated rumor. If it turns out to be not true or accurate, then there are some that will actually believe the "command changed their mind" when it was never really made up in the first place. The webmaster has asked us not to post unsubstantiated rumors and this is not helping. Signed - Trying to stay calm.

Hearts Back Home--- The bravest hearts of any war Must be the hearts back home They pack the bags and tend the fires So warriors may roam. With anxious eyes they watch the news, And pray to hear no word. The say "No news is good news", Though it seems a bit absurd. They jump at every phone call And cringe when doorbells ring. In fear of one lone telegram, The news that it might bring. They muddle through their daily tasks Without parades or bands. But they are heroes just the same As those in foreign lands. They have the strength to stand alone, A lesson hard to learn, Then step into the background When the warriors return. No tickertape or speeches For the hearts we leave behind. They're heroes in the shadows, But they never seem to mind. SSGT Rodney Howell, USMCR

I would like to share this with the families, friends and loved ones of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. It's probably been seen before, but it's worth reading again. “The average age of the military man is 19 years. He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father's; but he has never collected unemployment either. He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away. He listens to rock and roll or hip-hop or rap or jazz or swing and 155mm Howitzers. He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk. He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in the dark. He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must. He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional. He can march until he is told to stop or stop until he is told to march. He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity. He is self-sufficient. He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry. He may forget to floss or brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts. If you're thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food. He'll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low. He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands. He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job. He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay and still find ironic humor in it all. He has seen more suffering and death then he should have in his short lifetime. He has stood amidst dead bodies, some of which he helped to create, and felt both terrified and thankful that he wasn't one of them. He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed. He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to 'square-away' those around him who haven't bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful. Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years. He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship, respect, and understanding. Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood. A prayer for our Military "Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen."

I thought it interesting and sad that one of our soldiers noted how unsupportive "The Stars and Stripes" has been to the very soldiers it was establish to serve. It appears they have decided it is better to be part of the mainstream media rather than the eyes, ears and mouthpiece for soldiers all over the world. To the soldiers- we parents, retirees and Americans KNOW what you are doing in Iraq, the successes and the setbacks, and the incredible sacrifices you are making on our behalf. We love you, miss you and will continue to voice our displeasure with S&S's decision to undermine your morale and welfare. The gringing monotony of war with it's disregard for body and mind is ceaseless. It wears the mind and body of those who fight in it. It wears the minds of those who wait for it to end. To reduce wear on the soul take notice of this: The 91st Psalm is called the Soldier's Psalm. It got this unique name after the First World War. A Canadian Infantry Battalion was on the line. The Commander required each man to read the Psalm daily. For their time on the line there were no deaths! In times of danger it may comfort some. When not in danger remember to be thankful for the good.

What would you do if every time you fell in love with someone you had to say good-bye? What would you do if every time you wanted someone they would never be there? What would you do if for every moment you were truly happy there would be 10 moments of sadness? So, I just wanted to say, even if I never talk to you again in my life, you are special to me and you have made a difference in my life. I look up to you, respect you, and truly cherish you. Remember, everyone needs a friend, someday you might feel like you have NO FRIENDS at all, just remember this e-mail and take comfort in knowing somebody out there cares about you and always will. I'll Always Be There In times of trouble, In times of need,If you are feeling SAD, You can count on me. I will give you a wink, Until you smile, give you a hug, And stand by your side. I'll be there for you till the end, I'll always and forever, be your friend!

Dear Sky Soldiers, Thank you for defending the greatest country on God's green earth. It's the only place like it and if we don't protect it, our freedoms will cease to exist. Why else is everyone trying so hard to come into the USA, they know what we have and want it. I love this country and everything we stand for. Yesterday marked seven months my son (PFC Scott Chamley) has been in Iraq. He is my hero along with everyone else that is deployed throughout the world. It may be weird at first when you get home, but take it just one day at a time and reach out and accept help from the Old Herd and support groups, your church, counseling etc. I survived a great trauma and its aftermath and would be dead from suicide if it were not for the wonderful people who helped me out. We stand ready to help the current 173d soldiers, and thier families, in any way we can. We've been there and still deal with the pain of our loss from the VietNam war. It's never that far away from us and when the Herd suffers causualties it's felt by us.There are Herd guys all across the US and as Pappy said just contact the International Society or any chapter to find someone in your area.To the family member who asked what can they do to help their soldier or to try and understand them just continue to love them. All will be OK.AIRBORNE!!DRIVE ON!!!

I wouldn't attempt to tell you how to deal with all the emotions that your soldiers have or will have when they come home, but if I wanted to talk to someone that could help I would contact the closest military installation - doesn't matter the branch of service - and get in touch with a Chaplain. They would be happy to talk to you about what you are facing and give you some contacts/reading/etc. that might help. If you are part of the military family, you could also work with the mental health office in the hospital - but call the Chaplain first. Best of luck - this is not going to be easy for any of us.

How do WE who haven't been there cope with the anger and hurt our love sky soldiers are feeling? How do WE help them deal with all they are going through? When a sky soldier is very angry and very hurt, that anger is taken out on all the people he cares for and it's certainly taken out on his brothers and more so on his enemies. We never turn our backs on the ones we love, NEVER. We tell them endlessly we love them, we support them, we are there for them. WE don't know what they are going through.....how do WE do this?

It should not surprise anybody who is not a "Herdsman" that the 173d Airborne Brigade is a family. Whether it's a Vietnam Vet or Iraq War Vet. 3 color desert pattern does not separate from jungle green. We are all Brothers and now also Sisters. Check out the homepage of 173rdAirborne.com then scroll down to the center where it lists Society forms. Please note the application for membership in the International Society of The 173d Airborne Brigade is for ALL those that serve(d) with the Brigade. Not just Vietnam Vets. Go to the Society official website. Read our history. See why the "originals" care so much for the new kids. The old guys know. The young ones need a place/person to go or talk to that knows and won't judge them. War makes life difficult for a lot more folks than you can imagine. There are 3 countries with 173d Chapters. If you need to help or join or buy a membership for a deployed "Herdsman" there's information available. We old ones are waiting for the young ones. WE"VE BEEN THERE.
