If at all possible, I'd like to hear from anyone with the 173d ABN, or family members who may know what is safe to send at this time, in particular anyone related to the Combat Support Company and/or Recon Units. The last I heard from my son they were overwhelmed with hygiene supplies and wanted food, drinks and snacks, which I've been sending. He also stressed DVDs and CDs as they had to equipment to play them. My understanding is that they are on the move again, which I suspected since I haven't heard from my son via email the day before his birthday on 11/13. He said he'd call me the next day and never did, since I've heard the CSC has moved, they are back to less then desirable living conditions and so I want to use common sense when sending things. With the holidays coming up I'd love to be able to send DVDs and maybe even equipment if I can afford it, yet don't want to send things he and they can't use or take with them if moving. I know it'd only make him feel bad if he had to leave what I sent as Christmas gifts behind. If anyone has any ideas could you respond to me. It has been a tough go for our family, but we are the lucky ones. Our soldier is returning to us. I want you all to know that my prayers are with you and I cry for every soldier lost and injured. Another idea to send to the guys is Boboli Pizza Crust, pizza sauce, parmesan cheese, olives, and whatever you can think of to throw on a pizza. It's cool enough over there now that I've also sent Hormel sliced Pepperoni which doesn't need to be refrigerated until after it's opened. I usually send my son the small or mini size pizza crusts, the sauce (boboli brand) comes in individual plastic bags, and small containers of parmesan. The first time I sent a box of pizza makings, you would've thought I sent a box of gold! It's nice to trade ideas and give our guys some variety! I'm going for the bean burrito box next week!!! He'll love that! Good idea!

To Mark's Grandma - no, the 1 stands for the first battalion of the 508th Infantry. A little confusing, but the platoon should be a number along with the company designation, 1/B Co, or something like that. Just address it to CSC, 1/508 and he will get it --- guaranteed! Hope this helps - but keep writing, there is nothing else quite like getting a letter out in the boonies. Old Soldier.

Just wanted everyone to know I got a letter from my grandson today and it only took 6 days. He's with the 1-508th Bravo co. but he said they hadn't gotten any mail in about a week. Didn't know why. The only thing he has ever said is that he is in northern Iraq, not what the facilities are or any other info. Is there something in the address that tells you what platoon they are in. Is that the 1 that comes before 508? Just wondering.

How healing it has been to be in contact with families that have lost loved ones and those who are waiting like myself. My husband is doing two-year unaccompanied in Vicenza and jumped in with the 173rd. He is scheduled to PCS from Italy back to Bragg in Aug 2004 and we fear he will go to a unit heading right back to Iraq. That will be three years gone from our kids lives but I understand the life. Still it is so hard! I have so much respect for my husband and his sacrifices, but my youngest kids no longer no him. How do i keep the homefires burning after so long?

Hi I just wanted to let people know that I heard from my son finally after about a month. He is in Kirkuk with the 173rd CSC. They just moved to another location and he said its not as nice as the first. They just got electricity and they have no showers definitely a step down for them. He said its been very busy training on different weapons etc.. I think he got promoted because he had PV2 on the envelope does that sound right to anyone? Finally!!! Got a call from our son at 3:00 am from Kirkuk. First call in almost a month. Bco 1/508th, 3rd PLT is okay. For all the moms and dads that are waiting, I pray your calls come in soon. They were only in Kirkuk for a short time so he had access to phones and email. They do have microwave,hot plate and refrigerator. He asked for pillow, blanket, small pot, skillet and utensils. Said it was very cold. Also wanted Taco Bell hot sauce. Just mailed about 300 packets to him and guys along with refried beans and tortillaS. They are having bean burrito cravings. My nephew called his mom last night and said he has been getting the email messages I have been sending to him. He said he always gets them within a day or two and sometimes the same day. I have been using the 1508frg@setaf.army.mil address. The yahoo address has not worked for me since this other address was established a few weeks/months ago. He is with B Co. 1/508th. He is getting mail and packages in two weeks or better. He was appreciative of the goodies that have been send but the homemade stuff is what got the high praise. Apparently some ingenious mother figured out a way to send a batch of homemade chili and he was still drooling over that! Way to go mom! Just thought I would post this message for anyone who hasn't heard from their soldier in awhile and wondering if they are getting stuff. Also any innovative packaging ideas would be appreciated. I have ruled out certain items but if chili is making it there unharmed (he said it was in glass jars)--I think anything is a go!

I know wives who have sent pots, pans, microwaves, coffee pots, cooking utensils...If just depends on where they are, not every soldier lives in or under the same circumstances... If you choose to send pots of pans, send one of each, as whatever is being sent will have to come back...Just a thought

We received a call from the casualty center in Alexander, Virginia last night(11-19-03) informing us that our son had been wounded by an IED on 13 Nov. 03. They said he had superficial wounds to the neck and a ruptured eardrum. We have not heard from him and we've even called the paitent trace center in Virginia. According to them he was sent back to duty. All we want to know is his actual status. Does anyone know or have some type of number we could call. They couldn't help us at all. We're just concerned. Hey Brandon!! I have been meaning to write you a letter, but your mom gave me this website and I hope you get this. Your mom shows me the pictures you send and I can't believe how great you look for where you are!! I can't believe that little baby boy I used to babysit is now such a mature grown man and protecting me, my family, and the whole country. I am so very proud of you. You all are doing a great job over there and we are behind you and your effort 100%. As for me and my family, we are all doing wonderful. Sara Kelli had twin girls on August 22 and they are doing great. Their names are Mary Elisabeth and Nancy Lee. Sara has her hands full. Sally is half way through Chiroractic college and we will be seeing her over the holidays. Kate is working and going to Delta. Daniel became engaged this summer to Sarah Reinbold from Frankenmuth. She graduated with Florian in 1998. She is a RN and we really like her. Their wedding will be September 25, 2004. Dan just opened a new office and I am just trying to keep everything together. To the military wife who wrote what I copied here below. God be with you and yours and I will pray for you and your family. You sound like you are handling things like a "trooper" yourself. And just in case you think what you are doing for our country is not as important as what our troops are doing...DON'T THINK IT!!! They used to say that being a Navy Wife was the "Toughest Job in the Navy." Well...now maybe people will understand why...we had to do that for six months or more of every year our husbands were stationed on ships EVEN WITHOUT A WAR...But my real point here is that you will make it! You are making it! Many other wives & military moms have made it before you...AND EVEN IF YOU NEVER GET AN ARMY COM OR A MUSTARD STAIN!!! BY GOD YOU ARE DOING YOUR PART IN SUPPORT OF OUR TROOPS AND FOR THAT I WILL LET YOU KNOW THAT AS AN AMERICAN I APPRECIATE YOU FOR YOUR FAMILY SACRIFICES...And I am sure your husband the soldier does too. And if his mission were through I'm sure he would rather be home helping you...And I don't know either of you...but I've spent many a night in hospitals with our sick toddlers while my husband was serving on board a carrier in places like the MED and the IO...so...God Bless...Know that you are appreciated and we care about you...stay in touch with your support systems and if you don't think you have any there at Bragg...you need to get in touch with someone in family support on your base...my kids used to be stationed there too...there is lots of Army there so just make sure you don't isolate yourself and you'll be fine! (but I do know that you won't be truly fine til your soldier comes home...but you will make it a day at a time until then...I promise!). My 3-year-old was in the hospital with pneumonia and I had to put our other two in round-the-clock childcare for four days while I stayed with him. It seems so hard to sit and wait sometimes! My husband is doing an unaccompanied 2-year tour in Italy. He jumped in with the 173rd. Now he is slated to come back to Ft. As an italian, I would like to thank all the people who shared our tragedy in Nassiriya, as many many of us share your pain daily with all the losses of U.S. soldiers. Today our State and our President Ciampi gave a very touching funeral to our brave men serving in Iraq, all Tv channels made their best to bring those moments in all italian houses and a minute of silence was respected in all the country in memory of these soldiers and carabinieri. Italians and Americans are today closer, watching flags wrapped around our fallen heros in a church. My condolonces and heart go to the families of the soldiers Minucci and Fletcher for their recent loss. No word can tell the pain I personally feel for them.

Sky Soldiers, War gives us certain honors. One of them is to assist in the celebration of the life of a Soldier. Funeral Details or "The Ceremony of the Boots" is more than just a detail. Be proud. Remember your comrade and the good things accomplished. Small things and maybe heroism. You are the first to mourn the dead. To Terri, I just received a letter from my son that was mailed on Nov. 3rd. I have no idea why it took so long. He had told me about mailing it on the 3rd so I would get it around my birthday. Guess he didn't state which year. Also is anyone having trouble sending email to our regular FRG site. I have had it returned a couple of times now. I have tried the bcompany address and sometimes it goes through and sometimes not. My son did say that bcompany moved out of their warehouse into another building, a bit smaller but it fits all of them and that the 4th ID left.
