We were at a "Support Our Troops" rally yesterday in Eugene, Oregon, where we met a lady in her 60s who, through tears, wanted to thank all our troops for their service. Because of the American soldiers in WWII she and her family were liberated from Hitler. They became naturalized American citizens and patriots. We believe in what you're doing! Sky Soldiers, Let me say like the rest of the world I am very proud of all of you and watching the news at every opportunity to catch any word of your activities. I was a medic with D/3/503 in 1968-1969. Thirty years from now you all will be attending "reunions" and swapping stories or renewing old acquaintances. It may not seem important now and you may not appreciate your role now, but it will become important. I have had a good many accomplishments in my lifetime, but none of them mean as much to me as that one year in Viet Nam. Keep focused, take pictures, make notes or even better keep a journal. When you get home you will not be the same, you will be part of a "Brotherhood". It is for life. You will always have Iraq and the "Herd" as a part of you. It is something to be proud of. You are not only "Airborne" you are the "Herd". No matter what life brings you you will be able to walk with pride, even swagger a bit. God, I am proud of you all. I wish I could be there. Words alone just don't cut it. For the families, I don't have to tell you to be proud. Your role is as hard or harder than the troops in Iraq. They KNOW they are OK from moment to moment, you will worry every day you don't hear. If it helps a lot of us are worring with you. Guys write or if possible email home at every opportunity even if it is a one liner "I'm OK & love you" That's all they need. Read these emails you will see the pride and the worry. Your letters home will be read years from now. Someplace they will be treasured in a shoe box wrapped with a rubber band. If there is anything I can do for families or the troops please contact me.
