My son is a member of 173rd C co. He just called to say they had returned safely from their mission in Tikrit area. They returned today along with some 4th I D soldiers. The tragic accident happened to the 4th on their way to Kirkuit. I was thankful for the news, but am continuing to pray for the families of the 4th I D soldiers that were killed. Hope this relieves some of your worries.

If someone has a photo of the PFC John D. Hart shooting range in Iraq, we would greatly appreciate a photo. John was co-captain of the high school rifle team and they would like to put up the picture in their shooting range.

The U.S. military said three U.S. soldiers were killed when a roadside bomb blew up next to a convoy traveling between Kirkuk and Tikrit, ousted leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s hometown 110 miles north of Baghdad. Major Josslyn Aberle said the attack involved soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division and occurred southwest of Kirkuk. The deaths brought to 364 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in action since the start of the Iraq (news - web sites) war last March. Including non-combat deaths, the toll is 522.

I haven't seen much news about Vice President Cheney's visit on the news here, but the "Giornale di Vicenza", the local paper in Vicenza, had quite a bit of coverage. Before he arrived, the paper reported that, because of the weather, he might have to go by car from Aviano to Ederle, which would have been a security nightmare. They also said that there was a rumor he was coming specifically to announce the specific date when the 173rd would return to Vicenza! They covered his speech at Aviano, with pictures, and his speech at Ederle with pictures. They covered Mrs. Cheney's visit to the Elementary School at Ederle, complete with a picture of her with the kids, where she taught the History class for that day. And she ended the class by ressuring the children that their dads were doing an important job in Iraq. Joe Curtin (Army veteran,"leg" trooper, once stationed at Ederle).

TO SKY SOLDIER'S MOM -- A PFC is Private First Classs and a SPC is Specialist -- difference is a little more authority, a little less hassle and a couple of hundred dollars a month!! Can't give you any dates, but the best guess is that the soldiers are preparing for their return, the APO post office in Iraq has stopped processing mail and packages, and the welcoming ceremony in Vicenza is in the final stages of planning. Should be back in Italy soon. We have heard that the troops will arrive back in Italy in groups - not all at the same time. They will process back in, unpack, get their barracks straight, and then be released for 30 days "block" leave - which normally means 'all at the same time.' But haven't heard for sure. Check out this site for the Vicenza newspaper and it might give you the news when they will arrive - hasn't been posted yet and I think the paper is done weekly. Hope this helps - but dates are dangerous and guessing is safer. The Old Soldier http://www.22asg.vicenza.army.mil/command/outlook/outlook.htm

My son is with the 1-508th in Iraq. He has been in Iraq since the end of March. What is the difference between PFC and SPC? Any news on when the 173rd is returning to Italy? Once they return to Italy, how long until they get their 30 day leave? Will they all leave at once or in groups? Sorry for so many questions but I haven't seen my son since the day after Thanksgiving in 2002. I want to be sure he has the best homecoming possible. Any information, no matter how trivial will be greatly appreciated.

For the person that wants to donate frequent flyer miles, go to http://www.heromiles.org/ At the bottom of their webpage is a link to the airlines that you have miles with. It's a great group and they have collected lots of miles for the soldiers. Most all major airlines are participating with this project.

That's great news and I am also concerned about mentioning dates. But I am more interested in will the awards ceremony be done at the arrival? Will it be 2 weeks after they get back? Will block leave start as they return or will it start after everyone gets back? More general information --- without jeopardizing anyone. Hurry home Sky Soldiers - we miss you, continue to pray everyday for your safe return and my personal thanks to the 173rd Leadership Team for protecting our sons and daughters and bringing our troops back to us!!

Can someone from the Command Group or FRG tell us how the return dates, welcome ceremonies, etc. will be publicized to the families outside Italy? I'm sure most of us have some assumptions of our own about when things might happen, but what will be the official vehicle for distributing the information? It would be nice to set a link on our computers that we can check periodically to see when the "official" dates are known and what is being planned. Thanks very much - we hope this is all over soon.

Reading an blurb from estripes.com today, with news of Cheney's visit. "One of the most welcome surprises he brought with him was news that the Vicenza-based 173rd Airborne Brigade’s jump into Iraq on March 26 has been certified as a combat jump. As a result, all (that made the Jump) will be able to add a gold star to their airborne wings." Congrats to all those who have earned this, and have served our country. Because of your dedicated service, you make the life a little easier for all of us in the United States! Words can not express the gratitude that I have for what you do for us! Thank you, and God Bless...return home soon!

yes, that is true, which might account for how many we have lost in some areas. However, when i do hear news about our troops, it is always bad news. I hardly ever hear the good that they do. I actually have to go to the army, navy, marine, and air force web pages to read stories about the good they are doing for the iraqi and afghan children and people. I just wish that the news wasn't as biased and that the phrase "no news is good news" wouldn't apply to our operations and mission in Afghanistan and Iraq. Wishful thinking i suppose. On another note, I heard today that my best friend's cousin (corpsman) and her uncle's platoon from camp pendleton are going back out with the marines. Her uncle (corpsman) will go out later when his shoulder is fully recoverd from surgery. So I'm going to have to worry about them again... they came home in May/June...i just hope they get to come back again...

With our soldiers still deployed downrange, life goes on here at the Caserma, there are members of 22ASG doing their jobs as well as the many medics and rear detachments for each unit, and all of the family members who are in this for the long haul. And as for the new not reporting anymore, if we as family members focused out attention 24/7 on what is going on in Iraq, we would need padded cells. Life is still going on around us. These are welcomed distractions, granted I am sick of hearing about The democratic primarys and Michael Jackson, but its always all in how you look at it. Our boys didn't get the attention they deserved, but we also had less casualties than some of the other more publicized units...

I haven't heard nor seen anything on the news about anything that is happening with our soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan. We used to be getting a lot of information, but now that the war is "over", we are getting next to nothing. There is still a war, and we are still over there. Everything is about Dean, Kerry, Clark, Michael Jackson, the Oscars, Lord of the Rings and other stupid things that don't matter. I want to know what is going on with our troops. As far as i'm concerned, Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN are all doing a crappy job on reporting and journalism. Yahoo has been better at reporting news about the troops than major television news sources. I am appalled at how shallow they have become. If anyone else feels this way, please join me in e-mailing Fox, CNN, and NBC, and complaining.

My son, and a few others who have re-enlisted because their terms are up and are furthering their career in the Army (and of course deployed again), and also those who have been injured and returned to Vicenza. There aren't many, but my understanding is VP Cheney's trip was planned to visit the Pope and more so this was made part of the trip. My son only emailed me on it yesterday saying to watch the news and search out the 4-5 chair from the man's right. I'm assuming the "man" is Cheney, and the 4-5 chair down is my son. He said he couldn't tell me at the time who it would be, but to watch the news today.

Congratulations to all of you in Vicenza that were celebrated by the Vice President. I'm sure we will get to see some of his visit on the news tonight, and Linda already posted his speech on this site. From all of us back in the States, we appreciate everything that you have done in Vicenza and wish we could all be there to welcome home the troops next month. May God Bless you all -- AIRBORNE!

Yes, VP Dick Cheney was here at Vicenza today. He awarded 2 Purple Hearts to 2 of our men wounded in action and also re-enlisted 4 soldiers. He also said that our men will be getting their "mustard stain". (combat jump wings). His speach was televised here, but I'm not sure if it will only show over here or if they will have anything about it back in the states. They were telling us it was being televised live when we were there, so who knows, the media may show it over back in that states.

I just found this on my daily Google News search on the 173rd Airborne. It has Vice President Dick Cheney's speech to our troops in Italy. I haven't seen anything on the news showing him talking to the troops. http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/01/20040127-2.html

why is it that there is an article posted here telling of our guys going to re-deploy through Turkey? I'm sure Cpt. Zweibelson would be anxious to see this. See what kind of Operational Security is being given out in the papers, but not to the wives! I just thought this reminded me of a certain other event that happened back in July when we were the last to know what is going on!

Thank you for the info on Cheney's visit to Vicenza. I also found an article stating that he will have a private meeting with selected soldiers of the 173rd today. Adam seems to believe it will be televised and I have heard more on CNN that he will meet with 173rd ABN soldiers who have returned from Iraq. If anyone hears more, or has any details re: anything televised I would appreciate so much hearing from you at either of my email addresses. Thank you! Laura

Thanks, that's a big help, at least something to connect to. I have a TV news friend here in VT, he's planning on doing a story tentively called "Citizen Soldier", a two part series, which will include my office (VT Veterans Affairs) and Adam's return home, as well as the impact Iraqi Freedom has had on both the soldiers and families waiting at home. He's also a Vietnam Vet so this means a lot to him. Should be good. I just sent him an email to see if he can come up with anything with his news connections so I can hopefully get a better idea of when and where so I don't miss it. If I find out anything I'll post it on this Board. Thanks again so much. Laura

Important!! Does anyone have info on a special VIP visit in Italy? My son is back in Italy, he's re-enlisted and they are about to send him off to his next duty, training at FT Bragg. I just received an email today from him telling me to watch the news on the 27th, which is almost that date in Italy. He said they've been preparing for a special VIP visit from someone, this is his message: "Sorry I didn't write earlier, but I have good reason. We have been in big very busy preping for a special V.I.P. visit on the 27th. Watch the news on that day, if they show alot of it you will see a sit down discussion with Iraq vets. Keep your eyes open 5 or 6 chairs to the mans right. Might want to have a blank VHS tape ready (if your at home that is) I can't tell you when or where it will be, but just keep your eyes and ears open. well I got to go, but I will talk to you again soon. Love you,Adam" He didn't give me a news station, such as Fox or CBS, etc... only said he didn't know where or when. But thinks it will be on the 27th. Has anyone else heard anything on this and have more info then I do. Either way, watch for the news.

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-turkey24jan24,1,5399546.story?coll=la-home-world THE WORLD Turkey Seeks a Say in Iraq as U.S. Ties Warm Erdogan will discuss Kurdish areas' future during his visit to Washington next week. By Amberin Zaman Special to The Times January 24, 2004 ANKARA, Turkey — Probably few Americans have heard of Col. William Mayville, but news that the commander of the 173rd Airborne Brigade in northern Iraq is to be transferred to Italy was celebrated in front-page headlines in Turkish newspapers this week. "The colonel is finally going," gloated Turkey's largest newspaper, Hurriyet. The American officer has been the object of national ire in Turkey since July, after he ordered the arrests of Turkish special forces troops in northern Iraq for allegedly plotting to kill a prominent Kurdish politician. Coming only months after the Turkish parliament refused to allow thousands of U.S. troops to use Turkey as a launching pad to invade Iraq, the incident pushed relations between Turkey and the United States to their lowest point in decades. The two NATO powers have been working to repair the damage, a process set to move forward next week during Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's first official trip to Washington since taking office 10 months ago. Erdogan, scheduled to meet with President Bush at the White House on Wednesday, has signaled that he will push for Turkey to have a greater say in Iraq's future. Bush is expected to urge Erdogan to help expedite a deal to reunite Cyprus on the basis of the latest United Nations peace plan for the island. In a televised address to his nation Thursday, Erdogan said, "We will clearly express our sensitivities regarding the need to preserve Iraq's territorial integrity and our opposition to the formation of any ethnic-based entity." Erdogan, Turkey's most powerful prime minister of recent years, was referring to stepped-up demands by Iraqi Kurds for a semi-independent state that would include the oil-rich area around Kirkuk. Turkey is wary that the nationalist aspirations of the Kurds, who were key U.S. allies in the campaign to topple Saddam Hussein, could reignite separatist passions among its own restive Kurdish minority. The United States plans to hand over control of Iraq to a sovereign government by June 30. The Bush administration has said that although it is committed to keeping the nation unified, it will leave the choice of governance model to the Iraqis when they draft a new constitution after the return of sovereignty. To some Turks, that means the United States is ready to cave in to the Kurds' demand for autonomy, which could lead to outright independence. Galvanized by such fears, Turkey has been courting formerly hostile regimes in Iran and Syria, which also have Kurdish minorities. The Turkish army's deputy chief of staff, Gen. Ilker Basbug, warned last week that should the Kurds persist in their claims for an ethnically based federation, the future would be "bloody." Yet, in what one Turkish analyst called a significant policy shift, Basbug also hinted that a federation based on geographic lines — the model being pushed by Washington — might be more acceptable. Basbug's words followed a series of high-level exchanges between Turkish and U.S. military and civilian officials in recent months. Meanwhile, Turkey has been quietly helping the U.S.-led occupation in Iraq by opening bases and airspace to coalition aircraft and personnel. Last month, it agreed to allow up to 60,000 American troops to use the Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey to rotate out of Iraq. Mayville will be among those leaving through Turkey. "Compared to where we were six months ago, this relationship is in much better shape, better than anyone could have predicted at that time," Eric S. Edelman, U.S. ambassador to Ankara, said in an interview this week. It was on July 4 that 11 members of the Turkish special forces were arrested in the alleged assassination plot. In November, Turkey's parliament authorized the deployment of 10,000 troops to aid Iraqi reconstruction efforts. But the plan was abandoned by Turkey and Washington after the Iraqi Kurds threatened to fight them. During the Cold War, the U.S. saw Turkey's role as helping to contain Soviet expansionism. Today, said Edelman, Turkey can help "to reform the Muslim world." "A secular, democratic Turkey, moving toward the European Union, would be a horrible result for Al Qaeda," he said. European leaders have made it clear they will not consider Turkish membership in the EU unless Ankara helps resolve the dispute over Cyprus, which is split into a Greek Cypriot-controlled south and a Turkish-occupied north. Erdogan says he is committed to a solution. He is expected to discuss the issue with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan today in Davos, Switzerland.

My son is with the 319 in and around the kirkuk area I have not heard from him in awhile and all I am asking for is a little information on about when they are to approximately arriving in Italy, If someone can send some information to my e-mail address, it would greatly be appreciated. I am trying to be patient but the anxiety of not knowing anything and reading the excitement (which I am extremely happy for) is realy hard, but by any means if this is placing any of our troops in danger then please disregard, Thank you..

Thank you Mr. Bradley for hosting this message board. We have read it every day for months. To those families whose loved ones have paid the ultimate sacrifice, we want you to know that you continue to be in our prayers. To the brave soldiers of the 173rd we want you to know how proud of you we are. You are involved in a noble cause. Because of what you have done the world is a safer place and millions of people in Iraq and in other nations will have a brighter future. Those of us in the United States will also have a brighter future because of what you have done. It may be hard to see now, but you have been a part of an event that will literally change the world for the better for years to come. We have heard many stories of all the good deeds you did in the north to help rebuild the country. Those deeds will help lay the foundation for a peaceful and prosperous future there for future generations. Again we are proud of you and appreciate all you done. To all the family and friends of the 173rd who read and wrote on this site, it was a privilege to "listen in" with you. It helped us feel connected to all of you. As we read the joys and concerns expressed by so many, we realized we shared a common bond of love for our soldiers. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and helping us know that as we traveled on this journey through the last several months we were not alone. We continue to pray for all of the families as they wait to hear from their loved ones that they are safely out of Iraq. Thanks again to all of you. Pat & Nancy Kelley

For Jessica -- Once upon a time there were two -- a brother and a sister -- they were so close, yet they did what most siblings do -- "spar" -- yet the love they shared was more complex and greater than life itself, for they were so devoted to one another. They fought, they shared, they criticized, they directed -- but always they loved one another. Then one chose to serve his country, and off he went to war -- a war that was difficult at times to understand, yet he was serving his country, his home, his family, his sister -- that made it very right! And then, for whatever reason, he stepped into harm's way -- no explanation, no rationalization -- it just happened -- it just DID! and he left this physical earth -- and yet his family had grown. . .and grown. . .and grown -- he no longer just had one sister, one father, one mother -- he had countless in his family, all holding "mental" hands, forming a wonderful circle, keeping the sister safe and warm so she could continue to thrive, to be happy, to enjoy life -- and for his sake!! Bless you, Jessica -- you will always have a family! Just as all those who have lost in this difficult war -- the 173rd is here for you . . .always!! anne gonzalez

TO ALL SOLDIERS OF THE 173rd IN IRAQ: Good luck to all of you guys in that last straight line. Everyone knows how time just seem to stop when you get closer to something you expect real bad (if it can help a bit: we can't wait for you to be back either!). I just have a little favor to ask you though: take good care of yourselves and stay focused until you get back!!! Know you will, just want to be sure!! Your commitment and spirit are very impressing. Even if it was hard (and still is!) not knowing if my soldier was fine, I have learned great life lessons since March. Learned more about confidence, patience, facing problems in a calmer way, enjoying life a bit more, and I could keep on for a while!! So I wish you all the best for 2004, may your dreams come true and thanks for all you brought in our lifes...

I'd like to find out and perhaps add it to the flag and stuff that I have from the service. If anyone can answer that would be great! I ain't gonna leave until I say Hi to my brothers Bro's though!! Does anyone yet have an idea when that ceremony for the soldiers to receive the combat jump wings would be? It would be an honor to be there but to make travel plans for something that the dates are never carved in stone is difficult! Would it be videotaped otherwise and able to be purchased?--that would have to be the next best thing I guess.

Sorry, but only those that jumped into Iraq in March will get the combat patch. The Army has gone through a lengthy process to determine that the jump "qualified" as combat in order to make this a pretty special event for paratroopers. Now that it has been approved, only those that were on the manifest and jumped will get the 'mustard patch.'

Might be a silly question, but will only the troopers that "actually" jumped into Iraq be awarded the combat jump wings? My trooper didn't get there until May and missed out on the jump. Of course in my eyes he and all the other 173rd who got there after are just as deserving....Sorry for asking, I know he'd be horrified if he knew I was asking such a question!

My understanding is that they received their Combat Infantryman's Badges in Iraq but will not receive their combat jump wings until the ceremony at Vicenza -- the brigade wanted the families to be present as much as possible. It has been approved - just holding off on the presentation. This is a big, big deal and has not occurred in a long time.

Have any of the 173rd troopers that jumped into Iraq received their jump star yet? My son was among them and has never received word on whether or not he'll get one. He received his CIB but not a star on his jump wings. Wingdad

It makes me very sad when I read messages that are unkind. Our soldiers are over in Iraq to help the Iraqis put their lives back together. We need to follow their example by being patient and thoughtful of one another. I know it has been a long hard year on all of us, but let's make the best of these last few months; in this way we can bring honor to our soldiers. This is not meant to be a put down or judgmental -- just a little reminder.

Dear Deborah, It is such a nice coincidence that you wrote this note-as you must of been posting it I was on the website reading an article about Kyle. I am an art teacher and I am having my students working like crazy whipping up Welcome Home signs and decorations for the 173rd, and hopefully to get them to Italy on time. I have one 8th grade student, Jose, who did a beautiful collage heart with a camouflage background. He did it as a Valentine theme-- but It was just such a powerful piece to me, I knew it was meant for something more special. And he is just the neatest kid so we talked about the sky soldiers who have died. He is going to expand on it and make it a tribute to the fallen Sky Soldiers. I talk to my students all of the time, especially my 8th graders, telling them about my son and the others at war. The boys love seeing the pictures on this website. But,back to Kyle--I went in to see this website to see what Kyle's status was--Spc, Sgt... so we could get it correct on the artwork. I clicked onto the link next to his photo and read how he was going to write a book and how each chapter would begin telling about a different set of shoes---everything from his sports shoes, to ballet slippers to combat boots. I loved it. What a multi-talented handsome young man he was Deborah. You should be so absolutely proud of raising such a wonderful boy into a patriotic strong person. My heart goes out to you and all of the other families. And I want you to know that Jose is so sincere and proud of his artwork--we will have it over in Italy for when Kyle's fellow soldiers return. On another note, Kyle was also used as an example for another student who was in dance, (since he was a young boy)and as he got into 9th grade he was being harassed by the guys even tho he is a top notch football player. So I mentioned to my boys about Kyle the other day and showed them his picture. They think the Paratroopers/soldiers just rock, that they are the studs of all studs, so they were amazed by this. He is truly an inspiration. Bless you.

It seems like months since this site spoke of my son's (Spc. Kyle G. Thomas)death. I have wanted to express my gratitude before now to all you troops and families for the untold support, prayers and wonderful acts of kindness shared since that fateful day. Not a day has gone by that I have not thought of you fellas. You each feel like a part of me. And I pray for the safe accomplishment of each mission, the speedy return of each of you to your loved ones and the hope of a good life as you someday go about your civilian lives. Thanks for serving! May God be with you now and forever.

As the mother of a 173rd soldier, along with his older sister waiting for his return, I cannot even begin to understand the pain you and your family are experiencing because of your great loss. The words that you wrote to your brother were the most beautiful and endearing I have ever read. I just know in my heart that Justin read your message and loves his sister so. May you know that as the 173rd returns to Italy, Justin will forever be a part of them and will never be forgotten.

We can't thank you enough for supporting our soldiers and families with this message board. Thanks to you and to all of the people who cared to befriend us from all around the world we didn't have to sit here all alone wondering and worrying about our boy. It made us see just what heroes are and that there are still people in this country who care about it and care to make the necessary sacrifices to keep freedom around the world. I'm glad your website will be here for the soldiers after they return and after the war. Because they will need the support of you and other "herd" soldiers who know about war and being in one and all of the stuff we as parents who weren't there with them will never, ever be able to comprehend. We as parents have sadly not measured up to be the best and this war has showed us just how lousy we are as the lucky parents of a Herd Soldier at war in Iraq. We do have many regrets. We aren't sure whether to expect our soldier home or not, but one thing is for certain...We wish all of the 173rd and their families a happy homecoming because you all deserve so much more than that. We will never forget the names and the faces and the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us. May their families know that we will honor their soldiers in our hearts and minds forever. God Bless you Mr. Bradley, your Herd Soldiers, Your family members...And all those who have had the honor to visit your message board because they had a loved one in Iraq.

To all concerned. This site WILL NOT DIE or go away after the troops return home. It was here before they left and will here for a long time. It is for ALL SKY SOLDIERS, past and present. As your Sky Soldier's time comes to leave the brigade, this site will be there for them to reach back to the "old days." I invite all Sky Soldiers to contact their local chapter of the International Society of the 173d Airborne Brigade. To join up and stay hooked up with their Brothers (and Sisters) in arms. Airborne! For seven long months I have religiously scanned all the messages posted on this site. I have shared the pain of those whose sons have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our great nation. Mr. Bradley I don't know much about you except you are responsible for maintaining this site for those of us anxious for news of those in our families serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I simply want to say "Thank You". We knew that there would be times when contact with our son simply was not possible. We knew that there would be times when we did not know what our son was involved in. At times this was the only connection with our son. Now that the time has finally arrived when our "boys" may be returning to us and this site may come to an end, pleas accept the heartfelt gratitude from a typical American family with a loved one fighting America's wars. It has allowed us to keep from being disconnected and to make some small contribution to the war effort. God bless you and keep you healthy. And thanks again.

I cannot tell you what a source of cofort and inspiration this site has been to me and my family. You allowed the family of the 173rd to share sorrow and happiness togwether through this site. Soldiers Mum sometimes it is harder for us to call home then you guys will ever know. We know that when we call that 15 min is not enough time to thank you for all you have ever done and tell you that we love you. Also although some units are living on post near the luxuries of the comp and phone, there are many of us that have to travel from company bases, sometimes 45 min away, to Bayonet or FOB Bernstein in order to fight for time on one of 8 phones with 100 other guys.

I was glancing over the website and wanted to clarify some things that have been hot topics lately. The APO will be staying open as it is the same zip that the 506 ExpSqd (Air Force in KK) uses and the future zip for our replacements. If mail is sent it here will be forwarded back to the garrison APO (aka Vicenza). The support and outcry for us here has been unbelievable. I can think of various Vet groups, schools, and random Americans that have sponsored units and individuals and even when we failed to get our thank yours out to these people there actions were never forgotten. The Brigade has suffered some losses and brought a wrath of fury onto any noncompliant individuals we have encountered. Everyone here had a key role in accomplishing the mission, and you should be proud to call these soldiers by whatever name is appropriate (father, sin, brother, sister, daughter, husband, etc...). I can assure you that from our days in Bashur to almost coming home in the summer and until we get home, the soldiers at the company level have one thing on their mind. Getting home safely and together. The Sky Soldiers of yesterday can rest assured that the "Herd" of today is holding up the tradition that they fought so hard to earn. To the family and friends just know that we will be home soon and that we are as anxious to see you as you are to see us. This is Workhorse6Romeo OUT!

Just to clarify: THERE HAS BEEN NO OFFICIAL MESSAGE CONCERNING THE REDEPLOYMENT OF THE 173RD AIRBORNE BRIGADE. At this point, all of the dates and times you are seeing are mere speculation based on what "someone has heard." Remember - LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS. Don't be the person that posts that last little piece of the puzzle that a terrorist might use to strike at our forces as they are on their way home to their loved ones. Now is the time to be even more vigilant with ANY information that your soldier may pass on to you. Please, for their safety, DON'T SAY ANYTHING about the redeployment. Just know that they will be home soon.

I've been told the units are not allowed to discuss dates of their return for their safety. They are also told not to discuss it over the phone when they call. Unfortunately we are just playing it by ear right now. Sit tight, they'll all be home soon!

Since I never got the chance to write a message to my brother via this site prior to him passing I just figured that I'd post a little shout out to him because I just want to know what it feels like. I've only been able to post a message to all of his friends and his unit as a whole...I figure better late than never, right? So let's just pretend that he is going to see this = ) C company 1/508th IN, SPC JUSTIN HEBERT: Hi bro! Hope all is well. I think about you often as you may already know but I thought I'd just confirm your doubt if you ever had one. They say you'll all be home soon and I am sure that you are happy about that. Maybe, you'll get a chance to catch the slopes for a nice run on the good ole snowboard? Maybe you'll get to play IN DA CLUB by 50 cent and sing along with it....what you call singing anyways. I hope that we can finalize plans for Italy soon as you get back. I can't wait for you to show me around that place that you talk so highly of and meet some of your friends that you had mentioned. I also can wait to meet your girlfriend, Emily. I hope that she is coming along with learning the English language because lord knows I won't get Italian down. Wel, you'll soon enough be out of that country that you complained about. How it smelled, how it was a Sh-t hole....you are finally getting out of there. I know it wasn't by your 20th birthday back in July like you hoped but atleast it will be by your 21st birthday that is in 6 months. Just think you can come out and have a drink with me back in the states, legally, yep you won't have to get kicked out with the rest of the kids like you did when I last saw you on my 21st back in Jan of 2003. We can have a drink together and make a toast to a prosperous future for the both of us. Until then brother. As always I do love you and I miss you with each passing day. I know you know this so I won't tell you something that you already know. Take Care and well...just sit tight with the rest of your crew until it is time for them to come home. Love you Always and Forever, Jessica M. Hebert P.S. I am going on my first snowboarding trip this weekend, to Stevens Pass. And guess what? I am using a board that you left back here. Yep, fits me nice and I can only hope that it will give me good luck...don't even think about giving me an extra push...I'll fall on my own thank you very much!!! Love you Bro....

This is just a FYI. My son Josh was home on convalescent leave after being ambushed in Iraq. The army flew him to Germany and then back to Italy. I had to pay his way home from Italy to Minnesota for a total of $1,000+, which was not reimbursed. He is now back in Italy for therapy and possibly surgery. He is seeing an Italian doctor who will then decide if he goes back to Germany or Walter Reed for this care, which the army will then pay for. We have a huge VA hospital in Minneapolis but they would not let him go there. This does not quite make any sense to me but this is the way it has worked for us. I'm thrilled to hear of the 173rd finally getting to come home and I pray that your reunions are better than you could ever imagine. God Bless!

To Carol: My son arrived here on December 26th for his R & R. We were very concerned about a flight from Atlanta to KC, given the busy holiday travel time but all his arrangements were made ahead of time, and the price of his flight was cheap! He paid for that flight out of pocket, but when he submits the paperwork, he will be reimbursed. I'm not sure if the arrangements were made in Kuwait or Germany (Kuwait, I think), but there was a travel agency handling everything. It took him 48 hours to get here from Kirkuk; he left here (kansas City) Saturday night, and as of yesterday (Wednesday) was still in Kuwait as flights to Kirkuk were backed up. My Navy son also made is home for the holidays, it was the best Christmas ever! Anita

If they are coming back on R&R from Iraq, the govt makes the arrangements and pays the fare to the US, then the soldier has to get home from whatever airport they are dropped off. (I think those tickets are paid by the govt too now, but not positive) But if you are talking about coming to the States after they return to Vicenza, the soldiers will make their own reservations with the airline office on post and they have to pay the bill - just like a regular vacation.

The Army's plan is to return the 173rd to Italy over the next couple of months. Dates have been set, but not published -- so they might change a little. All the soldiers will return to Italy and then we understand the brigade will take a 30-day block leave so that soldiers can return home, stay in Italy, etc. But it is the entire brigade that is leaving Iraq --- happy day!!

You can send it to the HHC, which includes the battalion headquarters. Then put Attn: A Co, or whichever company you like. Once it gets to the Headquarters Company (HHC), then it will go to the individual company.

There was a address a few days ago to the FRG in Italy - you can go back and find that from last week. You can put to the Attention of the Company FRG so that your son's unit gets it. AS far as sending goodies to the unit, I would wait til they get back and not have tons of mail for them to pick up. They will be busy unpacking, sleeping, eating at all the local restaurants, sleeping, cleaning up, sleeping, etc. etc. Then they will get a 30 day leave, so any goodies that are there will spoil. Did I mention they will be sleeping? Hope this helps. The old soldier.

I was thinking about sending some packages with goodies to Italy then, since sending them to Iraq might be a moot point... and have the packages be there for their return. Is this a good idea yet? We will just be using the same address we used before they were deployed, correct? Also, for those parents or spouses who cannot be there for the return, but would still ike to donate money to the cause to help out with some of the food expense, (and the cold beer!)where do we send it to,is there an account set up that we can send the $$ to--hate to sound anal about it, but can our donation be designated to spend on our soldier's unit etc...or how is this going to work? let us know what the plans are!
