My son is a member of 173rd C co. He just called to say they had returned safely from their mission in Tikrit area. They returned today along with some 4th I D soldiers. The tragic accident happened to the 4th on their way to Kirkuit. I was thankful for the news, but am continuing to pray for the families of the 4th I D soldiers that were killed. Hope this relieves some of your worries.

If someone has a photo of the PFC John D. Hart shooting range in Iraq, we would greatly appreciate a photo. John was co-captain of the high school rifle team and they would like to put up the picture in their shooting range.

The U.S. military said three U.S. soldiers were killed when a roadside bomb blew up next to a convoy traveling between Kirkuk and Tikrit, ousted leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s hometown 110 miles north of Baghdad. Major Josslyn Aberle said the attack involved soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division and occurred southwest of Kirkuk. The deaths brought to 364 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in action since the start of the Iraq (news - web sites) war last March. Including non-combat deaths, the toll is 522.

I haven't seen much news about Vice President Cheney's visit on the news here, but the "Giornale di Vicenza", the local paper in Vicenza, had quite a bit of coverage. Before he arrived, the paper reported that, because of the weather, he might have to go by car from Aviano to Ederle, which would have been a security nightmare. They also said that there was a rumor he was coming specifically to announce the specific date when the 173rd would return to Vicenza! They covered his speech at Aviano, with pictures, and his speech at Ederle with pictures. They covered Mrs. Cheney's visit to the Elementary School at Ederle, complete with a picture of her with the kids, where she taught the History class for that day. And she ended the class by ressuring the children that their dads were doing an important job in Iraq. Joe Curtin (Army veteran,"leg" trooper, once stationed at Ederle).

TO SKY SOLDIER'S MOM -- A PFC is Private First Classs and a SPC is Specialist -- difference is a little more authority, a little less hassle and a couple of hundred dollars a month!! Can't give you any dates, but the best guess is that the soldiers are preparing for their return, the APO post office in Iraq has stopped processing mail and packages, and the welcoming ceremony in Vicenza is in the final stages of planning. Should be back in Italy soon. We have heard that the troops will arrive back in Italy in groups - not all at the same time. They will process back in, unpack, get their barracks straight, and then be released for 30 days "block" leave - which normally means 'all at the same time.' But haven't heard for sure. Check out this site for the Vicenza newspaper and it might give you the news when they will arrive - hasn't been posted yet and I think the paper is done weekly. Hope this helps - but dates are dangerous and guessing is safer. The Old Soldier http://www.22asg.vicenza.army.mil/command/outlook/outlook.htm

My son is with the 1-508th in Iraq. He has been in Iraq since the end of March. What is the difference between PFC and SPC? Any news on when the 173rd is returning to Italy? Once they return to Italy, how long until they get their 30 day leave? Will they all leave at once or in groups? Sorry for so many questions but I haven't seen my son since the day after Thanksgiving in 2002. I want to be sure he has the best homecoming possible. Any information, no matter how trivial will be greatly appreciated.

For the person that wants to donate frequent flyer miles, go to http://www.heromiles.org/ At the bottom of their webpage is a link to the airlines that you have miles with. That's great news and I am also concerned about mentioning dates. But I am more interested in will the awards ceremony be done at the arrival? Will it be 2 weeks after they get back? Will block leave start as they return or will it start after everyone gets back? More general information --- without jeopardizing anyone. Hurry home Sky Soldiers - we miss you, continue to pray everyday for your safe return and my personal thanks to the 173rd Leadership Team for protecting our sons and daughters and bringing our troops back to us!!

Can someone from the Command Group or FRG tell us how the return dates, welcome ceremonies, etc. will be publicized to the families outside Italy? I'm sure most of us have some assumptions of our own about when things might happen, but what will be the official vehicle for distributing the information? It would be nice to set a link on our computers that we can check periodically to see when the "official" dates are known and what is being planned. Thanks very much - we hope this is all over soon.

Reading an blurb from estripes.com today, with news of Cheney's visit. "One of the most welcome surprises he brought with him was news that the Vicenza-based 173rd Airborne Brigade’s jump into Iraq on March 26 has been certified as a combat jump. As a result, all (that made the Jump) will be able to add a gold star to their airborne wings." Congrats to all those who have earned this, and have served our country. Because of your dedicated service, you make the life a little easier for all of us in the United States! Words can not express the gratitude that I have for what you do for us! Thank you, and God Bless...return home soon!

yes, that is true, which might account for how many we have lost in some areas. However, when i do hear news about our troops, it is always bad news. I hardly ever hear the good that they do. I actually have to go to the army, navy, marine, and air force web pages to read stories about the good they are doing for the iraqi and afghan children and people. I just wish that the news wasn't as biased and that the phrase "no news is good news" wouldn't apply to our operations and mission in Afghanistan and Iraq. Wishful thinking i suppose. On another note, I heard today that my best friend's cousin (corpsman) and her uncle's platoon from camp pendleton are going back out with the marines. Her uncle (corpsman) will go out later when his shoulder is fully recoverd from surgery. So I'm going to have to worry about them again... they came home in May/June...i just hope they get to come back again...

With our soldiers still deployed downrange, life goes on here at the Caserma, there are members of 22ASG doing their jobs as well as the many medics and rear detachments for each unit, and all of the family members who are in this for the long haul. And as for the new not reporting anymore, if we as family members focused out attention 24/7 on what is going on in Iraq, we would need padded cells. Life is still going on around us. These are welcomed distractions, granted I am sick of hearing about The democratic primarys and Michael Jackson, but its always all in how you look at it. Our boys didn't get the attention they deserved, but we also had less casualties than some of the other more publicized units...

I haven't heard nor seen anything on the news about anything that is happening with our soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan. We used to be getting a lot of information, but now that the war is "over", we are getting next to nothing. There is still a war, and we are still over there. Everything is about Dean, Kerry, Clark, Michael Jackson, the Oscars, Lord of the Rings and other stupid things that don't matter. I want to know what is going on with our troops. As far as i'm concerned, Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN are all doing a crappy job on reporting and journalism. Yahoo has been better at reporting news about the troops than major television news sources. I am appalled at how shallow they have become. If anyone else feels this way, please join me in e-mailing Fox, CNN, and NBC, and complaining.

My son, and a few others who have re-enlisted because their terms are up and are furthering their career in the Army (and of course deployed again), and also those who have been injured and returned to Vicenza. There aren't many, but my understanding is VP Cheney's trip was planned to visit the Pope and more so this was made part of the trip. My son only emailed me on it yesterday saying to watch the news and search out the 4-5 chair from the man's right. I'm assuming the "man" is Cheney, and the 4-5 chair down is my son. He said he couldn't tell me at the time who it would be, but to watch the news today.

Congratulations to all of you in Vicenza that were celebrated by the Vice President. I'm sure we will get to see some of his visit on the news tonight, and Linda already posted his speech on this site. From all of us back in the States, we appreciate everything that you have done in Vicenza and wish we could all be there to welcome home the troops next month. May God Bless you all -- AIRBORNE!

Yes, VP Dick Cheney was here at Vicenza today. He awarded 2 Purple Hearts to 2 of our men wounded in action and also re-enlisted 4 soldiers. He also said that our men will be getting their "mustard stain". (combat jump wings). His speach was televised here, but I'm not sure if it will only show over here or if they will have anything about it back in the states. They were telling us it was being televised live when we were there, so who knows, the media may show it over back in that states.

I just found this on my daily Google News search on the 173rd Airborne. It has Vice President Dick Cheney's speech to our troops in Italy. I haven't seen anything on the news showing him talking to the troops. http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/01/20040127-2.html

why is it that there is an article posted here telling of our guys going to re-deploy through Turkey? I'm sure Cpt. Zweibelson would be anxious to see this. See what kind of Operational Security is being given out in the papers, but not to the wives! I just thought this reminded me of a certain other event that happened back in July when we were the last to know what is going on!

Thank you for the info on Cheney's visit to Vicenza. I also found an article stating that he will have a private meeting with selected soldiers of the 173rd today. Thanks, that's a big help, at least something to connect to. I have a TV news friend here in VT, he's planning on doing a story tentively called "Citizen Soldier", a two part series, which will include my office (VT Veterans Affairs) and Adam's return home, as well as the impact Iraqi Freedom has had on both the soldiers and families waiting at home. He's also a Vietnam Vet so this means a lot to him. Should be good. I just sent him an email to see if he can come up with anything with his news connections so I can hopefully get a better idea of when and where so I don't miss it. If I find out anything I'll post it on this Board. Thanks again so much. Laura

Important!! Does anyone have info on a special VIP visit in Italy? My son is back in Italy, he's re-enlisted and they are about to send him off to his next duty, training at FT Bragg. I just received an email today from him telling me to watch the news on the 27th, which is almost that date in Italy. He said they've been preparing for a special VIP visit from someone, this is his message: "Sorry I didn't write earlier, but I have good reason. We have been in big very busy preping for a special V.I.P. visit on the 27th. Watch the news on that day, if they show alot of it you will see a sit down discussion with Iraq vets. Keep your eyes open 5 or 6 chairs to the mans right. Might want to have a blank VHS tape ready (if your at home that is) I can't tell you when or where it will be, but just keep your eyes and ears open. well I got to go, but I will talk to you again soon. Love you,Adam" He didn't give me a news station, such as Fox or CBS, etc... only said he didn't know where or when. But thinks it will be on the 27th. Has anyone else heard anything on this and have more info then I do. Either way, watch for the news.

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-turkey24jan24,1,5399546.story?coll=la-home-world THE WORLD Turkey Seeks a Say in Iraq as U.S. Ties Warm Erdogan will discuss Kurdish areas' future during his visit to Washington next week. By Amberin Zaman Special to The Times January 24, 2004 ANKARA, Turkey — Probably few Americans have heard of Col. William Mayville, but news that the commander of the 173rd Airborne Brigade in northern Iraq is to be transferred to Italy was celebrated in front-page headlines in Turkish newspapers this week. "The colonel is finally going," gloated Turkey's largest newspaper, Hurriyet. The American officer has been the object of national ire in Turkey since July, after he ordered the arrests of Turkish special forces troops in northern Iraq for allegedly plotting to kill a prominent Kurdish politician. Coming only months after the Turkish parliament refused to allow thousands of U.S. troops to use Turkey as a launching pad to invade Iraq, the incident pushed relations between Turkey and the United States to their lowest point in decades. The two NATO powers have been working to repair the damage, a process set to move forward next week during Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's first official trip to Washington since taking office 10 months ago. Erdogan, scheduled to meet with President Bush at the White House on Wednesday, has signaled that he will push for Turkey to have a greater say in Iraq's future. Bush is expected to urge Erdogan to help expedite a deal to reunite Cyprus on the basis of the latest United Nations peace plan for the island. In a televised address to his nation Thursday, Erdogan said, "We will clearly express our sensitivities regarding the need to preserve Iraq's territorial integrity and our opposition to the formation of any ethnic-based entity." Erdogan, Turkey's most powerful prime minister of recent years, was referring to stepped-up demands by Iraqi Kurds for a semi-independent state that would include the oil-rich area around Kirkuk. Turkey is wary that the nationalist aspirations of the Kurds, who were key U.S. allies in the campaign to topple Saddam Hussein, could reignite separatist passions among its own restive Kurdish minority. The United States plans to hand over control of Iraq to a sovereign government by June 30. The Bush administration has said that although it is committed to keeping the nation unified, it will leave the choice of governance model to the Iraqis when they draft a new constitution after the return of sovereignty. To some Turks, that means the United States is ready to cave in to the Kurds' demand for autonomy, which could lead to outright independence. Galvanized by such fears, Turkey has been courting formerly hostile regimes in Iran and Syria, which also have Kurdish minorities. The Turkish army's deputy chief of staff, Gen. Ilker Basbug, warned last week that should the Kurds persist in their claims for an ethnically based federation, the future would be "bloody." Yet, in what one Turkish analyst called a significant policy shift, Basbug also hinted that a federation based on geographic lines — the model being pushed by Washington — might be more acceptable. Basbug's words followed a series of high-level exchanges between Turkish and U.S. military and civilian officials in recent months. Meanwhile, Turkey has been quietly helping the U.S.-led occupation in Iraq by opening bases and airspace to coalition aircraft and personnel. Last month, it agreed to allow up to 60,000 American troops to use the Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey to rotate out of Iraq. Mayville will be among those leaving through Turkey. "Compared to where we were six months ago, this relationship is in much better shape, better than anyone could have predicted at that time," Eric S. Edelman, U.S. ambassador to Ankara, said in an interview this week. It was on July 4 that 11 members of the Turkish special forces were arrested in the alleged assassination plot. In November, Turkey's parliament authorized the deployment of 10,000 troops to aid Iraqi reconstruction efforts. But the plan was abandoned by Turkey and Washington after the Iraqi Kurds threatened to fight them. During the Cold War, the U.S. saw Turkey's role as helping to contain Soviet expansionism. Today, said Edelman, Turkey can help "to reform the Muslim world." "A secular, democratic Turkey, moving toward the European Union, would be a horrible result for Al Qaeda," he said. European leaders have made it clear they will not consider Turkish membership in the EU unless Ankara helps resolve the dispute over Cyprus, which is split into a Greek Cypriot-controlled south and a Turkish-occupied north. Erdogan says he is committed to a solution. He is expected to discuss the issue with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan today in Davos, Switzerland.

Thank you Mr. Bradley for hosting this message board. We have read it every day for months. To those families whose loved ones have paid the ultimate sacrifice, we want you to know that you continue to be in our prayers. To the brave soldiers of the 173rd we want you to know how proud of you we are. You are involved in a noble cause. Because of what you have done the world is a safer place and millions of people in Iraq and in other nations will have a brighter future. Those of us in the United States will also have a brighter future because of what you have done. It may be hard to see now, but you have been a part of an event that will literally change the world for the better for years to come. We have heard many stories of all the good deeds you did in the north to help rebuild the country. Those deeds will help lay the foundation for a peaceful and prosperous future there for future generations. Again we are proud of you and appreciate all you done. To all the family and friends of the 173rd who read and wrote on this site, it was a privilege to "listen in" with you. It helped us feel connected to all of you. As we read the joys and concerns expressed by so many, we realized we shared a common bond of love for our soldiers. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and helping us know that as we traveled on this journey through the last several months we were not alone. We continue to pray for all of the families as they wait to hear from their loved ones that they are safely out of Iraq. Thanks again to all of you. Pat & Nancy Kelley

For Jessica -- Once upon a time there were two -- a brother and a sister -- they were so close, yet they did what most siblings do -- "spar" -- yet the love they shared was more complex and greater than life itself, for they were so devoted to one another. They fought, they shared, they criticized, they directed -- but always they loved one another. Then one chose to serve his country, and off he went to war -- a war that was difficult at times to understand, yet he was serving his country, his home, his family, his sister -- that made it very right! And then, for whatever reason, he stepped into harm's way -- no explanation, no rationalization -- it just happened -- it just DID! and he left this physical earth -- and yet his family had grown. . .and grown. . .and grown -- he no longer just had one sister, one father, one mother -- he had countless in his family, all holding "mental" hands, forming a wonderful circle, keeping the sister safe and warm so she could continue to thrive, to be happy, to enjoy life -- and for his sake!! Bless you, Jessica -- you will always have a family! Just as all those who have lost in this difficult war -- the 173rd is here for you . . .always!! anne gonzalez

TO ALL SOLDIERS OF THE 173rd IN IRAQ: Good luck to all of you guys in that last straight line. Everyone knows how time just seem to stop when you get closer to something you expect real bad (if it can help a bit: we can't wait for you to be back either!). I just have a little favor to ask you though: take good care of yourselves and stay focused until you get back!!! Know you will, just want to be sure!! Your commitment and spirit are very impressing. Even if it was hard (and still is!) not knowing if my soldier was fine, I have learned great life lessons since March. Learned more about confidence, patience, facing problems in a calmer way, enjoying life a bit more, and I could keep on for a while!! So I wish you all the best for 2004, may your dreams come true and thanks for all you brought in our lifes...

Does anyone yet have an idea when that ceremony for the soldiers to receive the combat jump wings would be? It would be an honor to be there but to make travel plans for something that the dates are never carved in stone is difficult! Would it be videotaped otherwise and able to be purchased?--that would have to be the next best thing I guess.

Sorry, but only those that jumped into Iraq in March will get the combat patch. The Army has gone through a lengthy process to determine that the jump "qualified" as combat in order to make this a pretty special event for paratroopers. Now that it has been approved, only those that were on the manifest and jumped will get the 'mustard patch.'

Might be a silly question, but will only the troopers that "actually" jumped into Iraq be awarded the combat jump wings? My trooper didn't get there until May and missed out on the jump. Of course in my eyes he and all the other 173rd who got there after are just as deserving....Sorry for asking, I know he'd be horrified if he knew I was asking such a question!

My understanding is that they received their Combat Infantryman's Badges in Iraq but will not receive their combat jump wings until the ceremony at Vicenza -- the brigade wanted the families to be present as much as possible. It has been approved - just holding off on the presentation. This is a big, big deal and has not occurred in a long time.

It makes me very sad when I read messages that are unkind. Our soldiers are over in Iraq to help the Iraqis put their lives back together. We need to follow their example by being patient and thoughtful of one another. I know it has been a long hard year on all of us, but let's make the best of these last few months; in this way we can bring honor to our soldiers. This is not meant to be a put down or judgmental -- just a little reminder.

Dear Deborah, It is such a nice coincidence that you wrote this note-as you must of been posting it I was on the website reading an article about Kyle. I am an art teacher and I am having my students working like crazy whipping up Welcome Home signs and decorations for the 173rd, and hopefully to get them to Italy on time. I have one 8th grade student, Jose, who did a beautiful collage heart with a camouflage background. He did it as a Valentine theme-- but It was just such a powerful piece to me, I knew it was meant for something more special. And he is just the neatest kid so we talked about the sky soldiers who have died. He is going to expand on it and make it a tribute to the fallen Sky Soldiers. I talk to my students all of the time, especially my 8th graders, telling them about my son and the others at war. The boys love seeing the pictures on this website. But,back to Kyle--I went in to see this website to see what Kyle's status was--Spc, Sgt... so we could get it correct on the artwork. I clicked onto the link next to his photo and read how he was going to write a book and how each chapter would begin telling about a different set of shoes---everything from his sports shoes, to ballet slippers to combat boots. I loved it. What a multi-talented handsome young man he was Deborah. You should be so absolutely proud of raising such a wonderful boy into a patriotic strong person. My heart goes out to you and all of the other families. And I want you to know that Jose is so sincere and proud of his artwork--we will have it over in Italy for when Kyle's fellow soldiers return. On another note, Kyle was also used as an example for another student who was in dance, (since he was a young boy)and as he got into 9th grade he was being harassed by the guys even tho he is a top notch football player. So I mentioned to my boys about Kyle the other day and showed them his picture. They think the Paratroopers/soldiers just rock, that they are the studs of all studs, so they were amazed by this. He is truly an inspiration. Bless you.

We can't thank you enough for supporting our soldiers and families with this message board. Thanks to you and to all of the people who cared to befriend us from all around the world we didn't have to sit here all alone wondering and worrying about our boy. It made us see just what heroes are and that there are still people in this country who care about it and care to make the necessary sacrifices to keep freedom around the world. I'm glad your website will be here for the soldiers after they return and after the war. Because they will need the support of you and other "herd" soldiers who know about war and being in one and all of the stuff we as parents who weren't there with them will never, ever be able to comprehend. We as parents have sadly not measured up to be the best and this war has showed us just how lousy we are as the lucky parents of a Herd Soldier at war in Iraq. We do have many regrets. We aren't sure whether to expect our soldier home or not, but one thing is for certain...We wish all of the 173rd and their families a happy homecoming because you all deserve so much more than that. We will never forget the names and the faces and the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us. May their families know that we will honor their soldiers in our hearts and minds forever. God Bless you Mr. Bradley, your Herd Soldiers, Your family members...And all those who have had the honor to visit your message board because they had a loved one in Iraq.

For seven long months I have religiously scanned all the messages posted on this site. I have shared the pain of those whose sons have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our great nation. Mr. Bradley I don't know much about you except you are responsible for maintaining this site for those of us anxious for news of those in our families serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I simply want to say "Thank You". We knew that there would be times when contact with our son simply was not possible. We knew that there would be times when we did not know what our son was involved in. At times this was the only connection with our son. Now that the time has finally arrived when our "boys" may be returning to us and this site may come to an end, pleas accept the heartfelt gratitude from a typical American family with a loved one fighting America's wars. It has allowed us to keep from being disconnected and to make some small contribution to the war effort. God bless you and keep you healthy. And thanks again.

Soldiers Mum sometimes it is harder for us to call home then you guys will ever know. We know that when we call that 15 min is not enough time to thank you for all you have ever done and tell you that we love you. Also although some units are living on post near the luxuries of the comp and phone, there are many of us that have to travel from company bases, sometimes 45 min away, to Bayonet or FOB Bernstein in order to fight for time on one of 8 phones with 100 other guys.

I was glancing over the website and wanted to clarify some things that have been hot topics lately. The APO will be staying open as it is the same zip that the 506 ExpSqd (Air Force in KK) uses and the future zip for our replacements. If mail is sent it here will be forwarded back to the garrison APO (aka Vicenza). The support and outcry for us here has been unbelievable. I can think of various Vet groups, schools, and random Americans that have sponsored units and individuals and even when we failed to get our thank yours out to these people there actions were never forgotten. The Brigade has suffered some losses and brought a wrath of fury onto any noncompliant individuals we have encountered. Everyone here had a key role in accomplishing the mission, and you should be proud to call these soldiers by whatever name is appropriate (father, sin, brother, sister, daughter, husband, etc...). I can assure you that from our days in Bashur to almost coming home in the summer and until we get home, the soldiers at the company level have one thing on their mind. Getting home safely and together. The Sky Soldiers of yesterday can rest assured that the "Herd" of today is holding up the tradition that they fought so hard to earn. To the family and friends just know that we will be home soon and that we are as anxious to see you as you are to see us. This is Workhorse6Romeo OUT!

Just to clarify: THERE HAS BEEN NO OFFICIAL MESSAGE CONCERNING THE REDEPLOYMENT OF THE 173RD AIRBORNE BRIGADE. At this point, all of the dates and times you are seeing are mere speculation based on what "someone has heard." Remember - LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS. Don't be the person that posts that last little piece of the puzzle that a terrorist might use to strike at our forces as they are on their way home to their loved ones. Now is the time to be even more vigilant with ANY information that your soldier may pass on to you. Please, for their safety, DON'T SAY ANYTHING about the redeployment. Just know that they will be home soon.

Since I never got the chance to write a message to my brother via this site prior to him passing I just figured that I'd post a little shout out to him because I just want to know what it feels like. I've only been able to post a message to all of his friends and his unit as a whole...I figure better late than never, right? So let's just pretend that he is going to see this = ) C company 1/508th IN, SPC JUSTIN HEBERT: Hi bro! Hope all is well. I think about you often as you may already know but I thought I'd just confirm your doubt if you ever had one. They say you'll all be home soon and I am sure that you are happy about that. Maybe, you'll get a chance to catch the slopes for a nice run on the good ole snowboard? Maybe you'll get to play IN DA CLUB by 50 cent and sing along with it....what you call singing anyways. I hope that we can finalize plans for Italy soon as you get back. I can't wait for you to show me around that place that you talk so highly of and meet some of your friends that you had mentioned. I also can wait to meet your girlfriend, Emily. I hope that she is coming along with learning the English language because lord knows I won't get Italian down. Wel, you'll soon enough be out of that country that you complained about. How it smelled, how it was a Sh-t hole....you are finally getting out of there. I know it wasn't by your 20th birthday back in July like you hoped but atleast it will be by your 21st birthday that is in 6 months. Just think you can come out and have a drink with me back in the states, legally, yep you won't have to get kicked out with the rest of the kids like you did when I last saw you on my 21st back in Jan of 2003. We can have a drink together and make a toast to a prosperous future for the both of us. Until then brother. As always I do love you and I miss you with each passing day. I know you know this so I won't tell you something that you already know. Take Care and well...just sit tight with the rest of your crew until it is time for them to come home. Love you Always and Forever, Jessica M. Hebert P.S. I am going on my first snowboarding trip this weekend, to Stevens Pass. And guess what? I am using a board that you left back here. Yep, fits me nice and I can only hope that it will give me good luck...don't even think about giving me an extra push...I'll fall on my own thank you very much!!! Love you Bro....

This is just a FYI. My son Josh was home on convalescent leave after being ambushed in Iraq. The army flew him to Germany and then back to Italy. I had to pay his way home from Italy to Minnesota for a total of $1,000+, which was not reimbursed. He is now back in Italy for therapy and possibly surgery. He is seeing an Italian doctor who will then decide if he goes back to Germany or Walter Reed for this care, which the army will then pay for. We have a huge VA hospital in Minneapolis but they would not let him go there. This does not quite make any sense to me but this is the way it has worked for us. I'm thrilled to hear of the 173rd finally getting to come home and I pray that your reunions are better than you could ever imagine. God Bless!

To Carol: My son arrived here on December 26th for his R & R. We were very concerned about a flight from Atlanta to KC, given the busy holiday travel time but all his arrangements were made ahead of time, and the price of his flight was cheap! He paid for that flight out of pocket, but when he submits the paperwork, he will be reimbursed. I'm not sure if the arrangements were made in Kuwait or Germany (Kuwait, I think), but there was a travel agency handling everything. It took him 48 hours to get here from Kirkuk; he left here (kansas City) Saturday night, and as of yesterday (Wednesday) was still in Kuwait as flights to Kirkuk were backed up. My Navy son also made is home for the holidays, it was the best Christmas ever! Anita

If they are coming back on R&R from Iraq, the govt makes the arrangements and pays the fare to the US, then the soldier has to get home from whatever airport they are dropped off. (I think those tickets are paid by the govt too now, but not positive) But if you are talking about coming to the States after they return to Vicenza, the soldiers will make their own reservations with the airline office on post and they have to pay the bill - just like a regular vacation.

All the soldiers will return to Italy and then we understand the brigade will take a 30-day block leave so that soldiers can return home, stay in Italy, etc. But it is the entire brigade that is leaving Iraq --- happy day!!

There was a address a few days ago to the FRG in Italy - you can go back and find that from last week. You can put to the Attention of the Company FRG so that your son's unit gets it. AS far as sending goodies to the unit, I would wait til they get back and not have tons of mail for them to pick up. They will be busy unpacking, sleeping, eating at all the local restaurants, sleeping, cleaning up, sleeping, etc. etc. Then they will get a 30 day leave, so any goodies that are there will spoil. Did I mention they will be sleeping? Hope this helps. The old soldier.

I was thinking about sending some packages with goodies to Italy then, since sending them to Iraq might be a moot point... and have the packages be there for their return. Is this a good idea yet? We will just be using the same address we used before they were deployed, correct? Also, for those parents or spouses who cannot be there for the return, but would still ike to donate money to the cause to help out with some of the food expense, (and the cold beer!)where do we send it to,is there an account set up that we can send the $$ to--hate to sound anal about it, but can our donation be designated to spend on our soldier's unit etc...or how is this going to work? let us know what the plans are!

I would just like to say that I appreciate the people that take care of this web site. They do a great job of trying to get everyones messages out. I know they can't make us all happy all the time, but they try to do the best that they can. I just want to also say thanks to all the soldiers that are over in Iraq for giving those people something that they may not appreciate today, but someday they will be very thankful for what you have given them. A soldiers Dad

The general format for the mailing address is on the home page of this website, but it would be best for you to try and find out your friend's company and platoon, otherwise the package may not get to the right place before they redeploy. In any case, try to find out and send it in the next week or two. Good luck!

If your soldiers have access to email they all have individual email through AKO, Army Knowledge Online. Usually it is there name separated by a period ex: john.doe@us.army.mil . IF and that is a BIG IF, they have email that is there own private personal email and you can email them at that address from a civilian address. I email my husband at his from my yahoo. Next time you talk to your soldier ask them what there email is if they have access. That way if they have hotmail or yahoo blocked they can check their ako. I hope this helps a little.

my son called home last week and said he had gotten some email (inconsistently) on the FRG 508 email address--he is usually out in the field and doesn't have access to the computer..if they quit taking the emails out to the soldiers then at least they should post a message here and tell us--however, wouldn't the email start coming back to us undeliverable if they weren't taking it anymore, because the mailbox would be on overload?

hey all, one of my best friends who is a marine has an older brother in the 173rd airborne 1st 508 (SGT. Tim Stanley). my friend wants me (and i do to) to send them a care package. however it is seldom that i get to talk to my friend because he is busy with after boot camp training so i don't have their mailing address. if anyone has any information on how to mail anything to these guys that would be great. thanks a bunch. much love from N. California Lake Tahoe area. God Bless, and my heart and tears go out to those who have lost their loved ones/family. it scares me that one day my cousin or my friend (both 18 and Marines) will someday have to go out and fight and possibly pay the ultimate sacrifice... i cannot imagine life without them.

I would like to thank all the kind emails, cards and letters that were sent to my husband I at the loss of our beloved son, Sgt Michael Yashinski. We are a military family and your kind thoughts and prayers were a great comfort to us both. I would also like to thank 1SG Boehm and Maj Martin for their assistance and the emails that brought me such comfort. I would also like to thank the families of PFC Hart and SPC Herbert, we have become a special kind of family and I am sure we all pray that this particular family becomes no larger. I waould also like to thank Adam Tyndall and Kyle Landers, your mothers attended Michael's memorial here in Alabama, which had to be the hardest thing they have ever done, but they wanted to show me that we are family and that no one greives alone. They are very proud of you as I am, stay safe and come home soon. I would like to say that if any of the men or women from Michael's unit is ever in Alabama please come by to see us. Michael sent many pictures back, but , unfortunately he did not write on them who these people were and we would really like to put names to faces. He always said "don't worry mom, I'll do it when I get home". Sadly, that was not to be. So hopefully if you are near here maybe you can help. Again thank you and my prayers are with you and your loved ones. May you all come safely home and soon.

If there are any wives in Italy now or going back there soon with an extra bed perhaps they could share it with a soldiers loved one if they are not able to find a hotel or cannot afford one. I am a 173d wife in the states and I am not going back to Italy my husband is coming here first chance he gets. I would however gladly loan my extra bedroom to a herd supporter if they needed it. We are family and we should help each other as such. I do know there are hotels there and for the most part there are few accidents. In fact I have not seen one. If you pay attention and wait your turn you will fit right into the flow. We will not know a definite date until the rear detachment commanders have it in writing and then it will be dispersed in the proper way. I know you all are excited about the men and women's return. I am too. We all need to trust we will find out when it is the right time. The best thing we can do is save our money for a great time when they do return. Going to Italy to be there when my husband gets off the bus would be great but then we would have to pay for another ticket stateside for our great vacation we have planned! I love the 173d and all of the supporters for it. Keep up the support and they will be home before you know it.

Thank you Wendy for mentioning the "other support units" of the 173rd. There is never much mention of my husband's unit 74th Infantry LRS, but LRS performs many missions that can never be spoken of. I want everyone to know that there is a small but fierce unit within the Brigade that supports all the units needing Long Range Surveillance. We are a very small Detachment; with so few wives it is hard to support our husband and their men. If anyone would like to ensure this dedicated unit has a great home coming please contact me. I hope that all the welcome homes are together as a Brigade welcome home and not by unit.

Hi In response to the phone calls. It depends where your soldier is. I know my son said where he is its hard to get a ride into the phone center. Its about 20min from where he is. He called once and used a phone card which he bought over there I believe. Hope this helps. Michele

Thanks "Italian Girl" - that is great information. There are alot of small towns in Europe that wouldn't know what to do with 50000 people - obviously a crowd of parents and friends would not be difficult for Vicenza. Thank You!

To all the families wishing to come to Vicenza for their soldiers' return: within an area of 20 miles there are about 50 hotels. 3 times a year (in January, in June and in September), every year, in this town we hold 3 international gold and jeweler shows, each of them counts about 1700 exhibitors coming from all over the world, and at least 50000 , even more, visitors for each edition of the show. Visitors come from all over the world as well, many of them come from the U.S. - if you know anybody in a big company in the gold field, try to ask. Obviously all these people do not find an accommodation in those 50 hotels, but they easily find a room within a 40 maximum 50 miles area. The town still works fine, some more traffic in the area where the show takes place for sure, but nothing else... do you think our city is not equipped to receive soldiers' families? Just a suggestion, if you're planning to come to Italy, try to get few info on the internet, and then contact hotels directly, they'll tell everything about the hotel, prices, how you can reach it from the airports, availability, where is the nearest rent-a-car, and how far the hotel is from the base. If you choose an accommodation downtown Vicenza, in the very central area, you will easily reach the base with a 5-10 minutes bus ride for 1 euro a ride. Otherwise, other hotels aren't further than a 15-20 minutes bus ride. My suggestion is: start to collect information's as soon as you can and organize your trip, maybe it will be easier than you think, but needs some time anyways. Trust me, my info come from my every-day experience in my job. I wish all of you a nice trip here, but most of all I wish all of you can hug and hold their soldiers soon... may God watch them and let them be home safe and soon.

I saw this on the internet, and it touched my heart. This is for all the Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen that have fought, are fighting and will fight for our freedom. Most especially, to the soldiers of the 173rd Airborne Brigade and my comrades in 501st FSC. May God bless and keep you all safe and healthy until you are safely in your families arms. To all our fallen soldiers, and their families and loved ones, my heart aches for you. Freedom Isn't Free I watched the flag pass by one day. It fluttered in the breeze A young soldier saluted it, and then He stood at ease. I looked at him in uniform So young, so tall, so proud With hair cut square and eyes alert He'd stand out in any crowd. I thought how many men like him Had fallen through the years. How many died on foreign soil? How many mothers' tears? How many Pilots' planes shot down? How many foxholes were soldiers' graves? No Freedom isn't free I heard the sound of taps one night, When everything was still. I listened to the bugler play And felt a sudden chill. I wondered just how many times That taps had meant "Amen" When a flag had draped a coffin of a brother or a friend. I thought of all the children, Of the mothers and the wives, Of fathers, sons and husbands With interrupted lives. I thought about a graveyard at the bottom of the sea Of unmarked graves in Arlington..... No -- Freedom isn't free!! (...Cadet Major Kelly Strong, Air Force Junior ROTC)

I have read some of the most wonderful messages on this board. I have felt the love that has been written to the soldiers and their families. I have also read some of the most irresponsible writings that someone could type before they engaged their brain and I must comment on one of the latest. I noticed where a young lady of 15 wrote a letter to her boyfriend who is 18 or 19. She simply said I miss him and love him. Someone who didn't engage their brain responded so quickly without thought of what it might do. I am the father of a sky soldier in Iraq. He is 20 and his girlfriend of 2 years is 17. I was 21 when he was born and his mother was 19. We begin dating when his mother was 14 and I was 16. Do the math. My parents have been married 57 years this past December. Dad was 18, Mom was 15 when they married. I know many married couples who are 5, 10, and even 20 years apart. My best friend who is a successful news commentator is 41 and his new bride of 3 months is 28. Folks, age does not matter when you truly love someone. Laws relating to minors is made to protect minors from perverts....not those who truly love them. Now if this GI were 30 or 40 then I can see where there could be criticism. Give her a break. Remeber the age of Romeo and Julliet?

Thanks for the info Wendy - now if someone can give us an address to send the donations in Vicenza that are made out to an FRG, I can handle that. I don't want to send money to an individual and it not get into the proper party account. I appreciate your taking the time to explain what is going on in Italy - we have no idea what is being done here in the States and the SETAF web site has not been updated since early Summer 2003. Give us some addresses and the donations will begin.

I wanted to address the person who wrote not to trust those of us trying to raise donations for our Welcome Home Parties. Here's the scoop...just so everyone knows. SETAF is the Brigade (AKA 173rd Airborne Brigade), then you hit the Battalion level which is comprised of companies..we have 1/508th & 2/503 & 501st FSC & CSC & many other support elements. Next you come to Company level, which is made up of several platoons....then down to squads, ect. Anyhow they are asking each company to throw their own Welcome Home Party for the guys. You were partly correct in saying that MWR along with SETAF will throw a Celebration, because they will....but each Company is throwing their own more personal celebration for their guys. Soooo on that note would you like to see our FRG funds? At least for our company the funds we have sitting in our account couldn't pay the average person's car payment, muchless throw a proper celebration for our deserving troops! Top that off with the fact that our post is small and already being taxed heavily by the SETAF celebration...that leaves us with no other choice than to ask outside our local community. I would hope you would chose to support our troops rather than hinder our attempts in showing them how much we love them! If you would like any other further proof of our validity...please email me, and I will certainly send you an information packet and ask you to help out our troops! Or if you wish to send donations or money (Please write your checks to the 1/508th HHC FRG..how valid is that:))I wish there was more motivation to help our troops than to bash those who want to help throw the biggest, baddest thrown down they've ever seen. After a year at war they more than deserve the gratitude and support of everyone who lives under the RED WHITE & BLUE!!! God Speed 173rd!!

To all my follow Sky Soldiers now serving in Iraq: I can not thank you enough for the service and sacrifice you are giving for our country, the Iraqi people, and the whole world for that matter. I applaud you too for the sacrifice you offer to each other. I was with the HERD in 1970 as a forward observer attached to a couple rifle companies. The things that meant the most to me were how we watched each others back while still accomplishing our mission and that our attitudes (our "espree decore") in the 173rd was 2nd to none. What a great unit to be a part of! This especially came home to me when I got medivaced from the field. Someone once said, "Greater love has no man than this. That he would give his life for his friends". I think that's why the bond between combat veterans is so great. Many others just don't understand. Well, keep up the good work. We're for you. My church has a prayer meeting every night. Among the many things we pray for are your safety and wisdom for our leaders. Asking God for some daily wisdom and safety can't hurt as you go about your tasks. I used to carry my New Testament in my front/right magazine pouch. Take care and God bless you guys (and the ladies!). Sincerely, Jim McGee --- e-mail: jdjam-4him@msn.com P.S. --- Believe it or not, I wish I was there with you. Talk to the Brigade C.O. for me. Maybe he can pull some strings!

Dear Greta, Please if I have misled anyone about Vinceza Iam SORRY. I found that while I personally found the drivers scary, the town is charming and the country of Italy is magnificent, but I must say that what I liked best were the people!! They were friendly and gracious and if they personally didn't speak English they took you around until they could find someone to help you. I was very lucky, my son made so many wonderful friends there and they all bent over backwards to help me. My son loved Italy and her people and did not want to leave. I had already made plans to return there and DRAG my husband if I had to if he had been able to stay there. Now that my son is gone we are still thinking of going because he left behind so many grieving friends and I know that they would welcome us with open arms. As a post note I think I should say that while the Italian drivers scared me to death (even more than the New York cab drivers did) that for the month I was there I never saw one of them in an accident that they had caused - you are right Greta it was the American tourist. For those of you who wonder though - they will be receiving a welcome home from the wives and girlfriends that are there and yes from the wonderful people of Vincenza.

To Lori Toft! Well said -- I too would like to help in any way with whatever is needed to make this an all star welcome -- these guys and gals deserve the best. The problem as I see it is having it all centrally organized -- if we had an idea what our goals were and what we were contributing for, that might be helpful -- I say we go the extra mile too -- my son will be one of the last out with the 173rd (from what I gather), and though he and others may miss some of celebrating, it all goes "to the same place" so to speak -- Thanks for taking a stand Lori -- I have a very large coin bank where I have been tossing extra coins for the past year just for my son upon his return - I would gladly turn it over to someone of anyone who is willing to organize something for our girls and boys. -- it would help if we kind of knew what it was we are doing for them, outside of the "generic" welcome home. Thanks for listening - Anne Gonzalez

regarding "welcome home celebrations"... folks, these parties don't just happen on their own... as anyone who has ever thrown a party for more than a couple hundred people can attest to...it takes loads of work and lots of resources! yes, the FRG groups have some money, but not enough to give the guys a REAL welcome party, certainly not enough for extras like decorations and goodie bags for the single soldiers. ... the army has supplied the guys with food this last year too... and we are THANKFUL that they have done so, but how many of you have been content with those rations? how many of you have sent off BOXES of extra food, snacks and creature comforts over this last year? Our soldiers have given SO much, we want them to have a little MORE than the basics. I'm sorry to get on my soapbox, but I feel like if more folks would step up to the plate ...sign your name, and HELP, rather than sit back and criticize, our guys would all benefit...I think each one of us could do just a little to help make the welcome home celebrations that much more wonderful for our soldiers, whether we will be traveling to Italy or not.

Everyone seems to want to do something special for their soldiers, which is a great idea. May I suggest that rather than go to the expense of going to Italy, and dealing with the redeployment, transportation, lodging, driving, Army ways, etc. that you all wait at home for your soldiers return. After all that's where their thoughts have been since they have been in the service. An alternative to the BIG welcome home in Italy would be the 173 annual reunion in Daytona Beach, FL USA! I know us old soldiers will have something special planned for them, and their families. At this point in time they can also have several months to request a leave in July. I also noticed that a gentleman with NASCAR ties has offered the troops of the HERD a welcome home deal of some nature. Remember the Firecracker 400 is the weekend prior to the reunion. I think the hotel may offer reunion rates at that time. Alot of the current HERD may even be stationed in the states by than. Anyway this is just another way for the HERD family to get together. ALL THE WAY!!!!

Michelle - we appreciate your keeping your postings to specific addresses. With much experience in military operations and intelligence, there have been numerous postings here that have endangered our troops - including the fiasco last month from that "supposed soldier" in Iraq. Naming towns, dates and roads is not wise at any time and I for one do not want folks to know when the changeover will occur - that will be a fairly susceptible time for the units. Thanks for understanding.

Grera -- we did not mean any disrespect to Italy. Our sons love it over there and we are glad they are in Italy rather than many other parts of Europe. However, many family members have not been to Europe and do not have an appreciation for what they might find there. If family members were to visit Vicenza for the welcome home, it would put an enormous strain on the city that would be very difficult. It would be better to wait and visit later in the summer or fall and not all go at one time this spring. When I lived in Germany we considered Vicenza one of the best places that the Army had and it is still that way. And we complain about our American drivers too --- stupid Americans!!!! lol! Please do not feel upset - we will let you welcome our sons home and then we will come visit later in 2004 to see your beautiful country. We thank you for taking care of our boys -- Italy has been a friend through this war. The old soldier.

Italy is a great place... it is smaller than usa... but more more friendly... that is why ur soldiers are so loved over here! i saw so many American flags on the balconies in my town... i really don't think there are some Italian flags on the balconies on ur town! n Italian soldiers died in Iraq as well as American ones! they are working together! let's not talk bad about things just because we don't know it... if u want to come to Italy... u should do it! it is great over here! plus u could see how ur loved one live n spend time over here!

Thanks Momma Ski for your comments. I had not been to Vicenza, but in other parts of Europe and just did not think that small town could handle the numbers of people that might want to visit. And having processed troops, I figured they would not have time or the patience to entertain guests while they were trying to get home. I appreciate your giving us some actual knowledge of the area to verify my previous concerns. Yvonne and I share your grief and hope that your wishes that all the remaining sky soldiers come home safely come true - maybe your comments will keep someone from speaking freely -- because we all know that we have not been able to stop them with our comments. May God Bless you during this difficult time - we will never forget the sacrifice that your family has made to our nation. The old soldier.

I have to agree with mom. I was lucky enough to visit Michael in Vicenza in May of 2002. The base is very small, there is little to no parking. If your soldier is a SGT or above he lives out on the economy in a very small apartment and usually shares it with another soldier to make ends meet. If they have a hotel in that town I didn't see it. You do NOT want to drive in Italy!!! The drivers there are wild - they drive on the sholdier, they drive on the sidewalks where ever. Apparently from what I saw the lights and sign are only suggestions not rules. Also Mom is right they will be very busy processing, turning in gear, cleaning gear, trying to find their vehicles etc. Your loved one wants to see YOU and be surrounded by family and all the wonderful things of home. Stay there and let them come to you. I KNOW how hard it is - I know how much you want to wrap your arms around them. I will never get to do this. Be patient, they are just as eager to come home. Also for those of you who like to tell dates and places - remember this, not only does "loose lips sink ships" but how will you live with yourself if you are the cause of some other wife or mother never getting to hold her soldier? How about your own? THINK before you write, someone is probably listening. We have now lost 9 lets work together so that no other mother has to go thru what I just went thru. Lets bury no more of our own. If you have to say anything - close your eyes and tell GOD, he's always listening. I pray each and every last one of your brave, beloved soldiers come home soon.

I was wondering why someone needed money to do the welcome home party . . . I'm sure SETAF and Vicenza have enough MWR money to do it right and entertain our soldiers. And individual companies and battalions have access to unit funds for parties too.

Thanks "mom" for the advice. Unfortunately, we have been saying that for 9 months and people still want to let everyone know that they know something someone else doesn't know. The old saying "loose lips sink ships" seems to be lost on today's family members. As for going to Italy to meet the soldiers - I would love to, but not sure it is feasible. We may not know a firm date until the last minute (excessive airfares), there is not sufficient lodging for family members in and around Vicenza and with all the processing and unpacking the soldiers will be doing for that week in country they will not have time to visit and entertain. My soldier has said to stay home and be at the airport when he arrives for his 30 days leave -- and I think that is the wiser move. Having lived in Europe, it is not as easy to drop into a military installation in large numbers, rent a car and get a Motel 6 for the night. Just a thought. HURRY HOME GUYS - WE ARE WAITING FOR YOU. This is information from another military source about security, Please, Please, take note! Loose Lips Sink Ships It has been a while since I reminded you that the internet is not secure - and bad guys watch it to see what they can learn. That includes these updates (which I focus on security awareness with for each update). Equally or more importantly, it includes the various bulletin boards, guest books, and web pages that some of you choose to spend time on. As troop movements begin over the following weeks and months, it is important that those of our family members and friends who hear things (that their soldier probably shouldn't have told them) do NOT pass that information on over the internet. Most of you do a good job of being security conscious - a few appear to blatantly disregard the harm they can do to our deployed soldiers. I firmly believe it is critically important that every one of us who supports our troops must focus on security every day, just as our soldiers do. NEVER talk about future movements or missions, or specific results of friendly or enemy actions. Assume that bad guys are reading everything that you write - and assume that they will act on that information to harm our soldiers if they can. If in doubt, don't put it on the internet (or anywhere else). Also, don't pass out soldier's names and addresses to those apparently well meaning strangers who want to write to our soldiers. We do not want to needlessly endanger our TF Ironhorse soldiers or those who are coming in to replace them. It is as true today as it was in WWII - "Loose Lips Sink Ships".

To all the comrades, friends, family of the 173rd,My son, Sgt Michael Yashinski was laid to rest on Jan. 4th, 2004. I can not possibly tell you of the grief I felt, but know this your many emails and postings have given me much comfort when I thought no comfort could be had. I continue to fly yellow ribbons for all of you and there they will remain until you are safely home. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I truly understand the statement that my son made on the death of Craig Ivory - "Mom, freedom isn't free". We have set up so donations to the 173rd scholarship fund would be made in Michael's name, so that one day you or your children might benefit. You were his friends, his comrads and his family. Also to Adam Tyndall and Kyle Landers I met your mothers at Michael's memorial and they are waiting for your safe return, so be safe. To all of you - my love, my prayers and my thanks. Mommaski

It certainly will be a wonderful day when our loved ones are back in Italy. I would love to help with a welcome home party for our soldiers. Obviously, we need some money and some great ideas. Maybe our webmaster could help us set up a fund that people could donate some money. If everyone donated a few dollars, we would quickly have enough to welcome our conquering heros home in style. Are many people planning to go to Italy when the soldiers return? 2003 was a long and difficult year. Our soldiers have sacrificed a great deal for our country and we can never say thank you enough. Let's make their return something all of us will never forget!

Isn't it something how "patriots" show up trying to justify their non-support of their nation by saying that they support the troops. As a troop, you can't have it both ways lady. You are either "with us, or against us." Don't try to eleviate your guilt by coming on here making some shallow denial. If you are on Saddam's and Osama's side, then so be it. But don't expect us to make you feel better about your non-support. Go write MArtin Sheen, he'll understand.

I come to this website not knowing anyone personally who is in Iraq, but feel compelled to send a message out to the 'unknown' anyway. I am a woman who has been outspoken and critical of Bush's handling of this war, yet as a daughter of a Vietnam veteran, I understand a soldier's sacrifice for what they believe in and how difficult it sometimes is to be fighting a war in the midst of harsh criticism from those you mean to protect. I want to make this perfectly clear- I understand just how much our troops sacrifice for my freedom to speak out against my own president. I may not support our president, but I will ALWAYS support the men and women who put their lives on the line for my country. Those of us who do not support Bush's foreign policy and his decision to enter into war with Iraq will ALWAYS support, admire and honor those individuals that serve in the military. Take care of yourselves and come home soon. A grateful patriot

Hello fellow 173rd families. I just got off the phone with my son Steve who is on leave in Quatar(sp) for six days. He said he flew in with no porblems it took about 3 hrs. He said it was pretty safe there. They have a 6 story mall and american fast food. He said he started smoking again something he hasn't done since HS but that once he started back with pt he would quit. His unit is suppose to come home to Italy in Feb. I guess they told him to have all there belongings packed up by the end of Jan. My big concern is that he will have to drive in a convoy for 16+ hrs to Kuwait as he is the gunner on the humvee. Well things could change as we all know but thats the latest from Kirkuk.Hope you all had a good New Years. Bye Michele
