Dear SP4 Roberto Charlos Sandifer/ 2nd BCO. 173rd, As we arrived at the Atlanta airport, there were a lot of soldiers returning to Iraq. I know this because I asked them. Tears began to roll, because I wished that you could have been one of those soldiers. They told me that they went to Iraq in February of this year. I told them that I had a son in Iraq and your company name. They spoke highly of the 173rd and wished that they had had the opportunity to jump into Iraq. Their MOS were different. I told them that they were all heroes and the country appreciate all that they have done and continue to do. We hope that all of you had a Merry Christmas and will have a Prosperous New Year. The job is nearly completed, so continue to pray. We are praying for the families that have loss their loved ones. We know that they are in heaven watching and guiding their other brave soldiers. We love you and may God keep you safe. Love, Mom &Dad

http://www.townhall.com/columnists/monacharen/mc20031227.shtml From the above article - Last August, the Quad-City Times of Davenport, Iowa, circulated a questionnaire to the Democratic candidates for president. The paper asked the candidates to complete the following sentence: "My closest living relative in the armed services is …" Dean wrote: "My brother is a POW/MIA in Laos, but is almost certainly dead." In point of fact, Dean's brother Charles, whose remains have recently been returned from Laos, was not in the armed services. He was a tourist, visiting Laos as part of a one-year world tour. The Quad-City Times editorially expressed dismay at Dean's mendacity. Instead of apologizing for misleading readers, Dean dashed off an indignant letter to the editor.

I think part of the reason they no longer show the fallen heros at Dover is because the media & others used it for their own agendas and to once again say we had too many casualities and need to pull out of Iraq. I've talked to some family members of fallen soldiers who say they don't care to see that on tv. It's just too painful.

HEAR HEAR!!! I agree 100%! I listen to the news often for any tidbit of information on the ongoing problems in Iraq. There is precious little being reported. Many times they don't even mention a fallen soldier's name or what unit he is with. I am a very proud parent of a Sky Soldier and I agree with the need for complete news coverage on the heroes serving our country in Iraq.

I couldn't agree with you more...We are so sick of hearing about Michael Jackson, Jon Benet Ramsey's murder, and now our local news had the widow of a man shot-up in an after-hours bar in town crying about wanting justice because he left behind 7 kids....And what is it that our poor soldiers and their families got on the news tonight? Locally, I heard nothing. And the national news, the casualty report was hardly noticible. I want the news crews over there in Iraq telling and showing the world what the true heros are doing and sacrificing...And when we lose soldiers, why can't we see them coming into Dover like we used to...For God Sake...Let us pay our last respects where the ultimate American Heros are truly giving up everything for our freedoms over here...Freedom of Speech, and Freedom of the Press, and Freedom so Free that even sickos, perverts, and druggies in bars get more time than our heros...This needs to be corrected NOW! Write your news stations, and major network affiliates....People STAND UP FOR THE GUYS & GALS WHO ARE WILLING TO LAY DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR FREEDOM!

PFC DAVID CROSS-CHARLIE CO. 1ST/508TH--Hey babe. how are you doing over there? Wish I could see your face...my mom and I just got back from seeing a movie. It was a pretty good movie-just sad. I was supposed to work today but the doctor advised me to stay out of work until I've been on my medicine for 24 hours so the babies don't get sick. I will be back tomorrow. Wednesday is New Year's Eve--I don't have plans, though. I miss you very much. I started writing you a letter lastnight and fell asleep. I will finish today and get it mailed off. I have another on the way. I love you and I miss you. keep safe and warm. I am praying for all of you. love-stephanie

That article about the families in Vincenza is outstanding...Why don't we get to see and hear about this stuff on CNN...and for a longer spot than 2 minutes! And I had no idea that a military hospital did not exist in Vincenza. Wow! Families! My hat is off to you! Trust me on this one. Your parents back here in the states...they are absolutely miserable without you home this holiday, and add the stress of worrying about a son or daughter deployed in Iraq...it only magnifies things. But you certainly are proving that being an Army family during wartimes is absolutely the worlds toughest job! Know that you are very much appreciated by me for your sacrifices...And people who aren't military do not know the half of what military families go through and why they do it...Our civilian relatives will never understand or appreciate what they have not experienced, just as I never knew you guys had no military hospital over there. I for one, will be here for you all when that war is over and all you people have to come back to the states and deal with the realization of all the changes that have occurred here while you were away fighting for us. Because that too, I am afraid to fortell, will be a big adjustment for you all. But I have no doubts that the likes of you all will sail right through that too...WOW! FINALLY A NEWS ARTICLE ABOUT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WAR HEROS IN IRAQ...THE ONES THAT MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR THEM TO DO THEIR JOBS FOR US AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY MUCH ABOUT THE HOMEFRONT...I WILL SHARE THIS ARTICLE WITH AS MANY NONMILITARY FAMILIES THAT I CAN...GO ARMY! YOU PUT AN OLD NAVY WIFE TO SHAME!

Dear SS, At last I found a way to send YOU an email. Hope this greeting finds you well/warm despite winter cold. I salute the work you are doing and personally appreciate your sacrifice to insure safety of US/Iraq/Other citizens. Until I know your name, I will call you SS, for Special Soldier, for that is who you are in my eyes, as well as our Father's. Sorry this msg did not greet you before Xmas, but we can celebrate that holiday every day in our hearts. Please stay safe/well & come home soon. If you can't sleep at night due to awful conditions, whatever they are, think on the song Silent Night: "all is calm, all is bright" and "sleep in heavenly peace". If you need anything I can send from home, please let me know. Meanwhile, think of me singing you a rendition of "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" or "Something's Stuck Up in the Chimney" and hopefully this will remind you of us whacky folks back home and make you chuckle. Let me know how you are doing. Fondly, Sandy Hutchinson : hutchdivinemagic@aol.com

This is an article about the 173rd wives in Italy. I'm sure that most of you know by now that 173rd Airborne Brigade is a key part of TF Ironhorse. The following article covers some of the challenges their wives are facing in Italy: Hard holidays for military spouses abroad But by networking, they try to make peace with the isolation of war. By Ken Dilanian Philadelphia Inquirer Staff Writer VICENZA, Italy - For Army wives such as Betty Cox, the cozy certainties of civilian life are just an aching, distant wish this Christmas season. Her husband, Adam, is away and in danger, patrolling the unforgiving streets of Iraq as a sergeant with the 173d Airborne Brigade. And Cox, of Ambler, Montgomery County, is far from her extended family, on her own with two young children at the Army base in northern Italy. Adam has been gone for 12 of the 18 months the Coxes have been based here. "We haven't spent a holiday together this year, including birthdays and our anniversary," Cox said the other day after mailing a portable heater to her husband in Kirkuk. "It does bother me." As most Americans gather with relatives this week, Cox is among tens of thousands of military family members spending the holidays away from their spouses or parents, many of whom are at war in Afghanistan and Iraq. And she's part of a smaller group of U.S. military spouses who live abroad in countries where they do not speak the language. A housing shortage at the Vicenza installation means most families live off-post, spread out in 49 Italian towns. The sense of isolation can be profound. But, as a group of paratroopers' wives who were gathered in the Family Assistance Center explained recently, it is not all doom and gloom. They told of building friendships by looking after one another, and of learning things about themselves. And they expressed pride in what amounts to their unsung brand of public service. "I think these women are real heroes," said Susan Turner, the wife of Maj. Gen. Thomas R. Turner, who commands the U.S. Southern European Task Force, which includes the 173d Airborne. "They're serving their country, too." But none of them expected the separation and the gnawing worry to go on for so long. The 173d is a quick-reaction force not designed for long deployments. So when the brigade parachuted into northern Iraq a week after the war began in March, families thought the troops would be home in a few months. Even that was excruciating, given the veil of secrecy that shrouded the mission. The men were "locked down," for a few days before the jump, meaning they had to say goodbye to loved ones and leave behind their cell phones. Several days later, family members watched part of the operation live on CNN. 'Very religious' It was six weeks before the soldiers could call home, and it took about as long to set up mail service. In these days of e-mail, though, communication soon became as regular as it ever has been in wartime, which helped blunt the sting of the news that soldiers in Iraq would serve there for a year. The 173d wives know they are lucky because the brigade's area of operations, in and around Kirkuk, has been among the safest places in the country for U.S. troops. Still, ambushes and roadside bombings have increased in recent months, and at least six 173d soldiers have been killed. "Some days you are just sitting there saying, 'God, please don't take my man,' " said Bethanie Trent, 28, whose husband, Gregory, is a sergeant. "You become very religious during a deployment." Trent, of Bethlehem, Pa., recently gave birth to a daughter. Her pregnancy was difficult, so her husband was sent home temporarily. "He cried when she was born," she said. "I know he's missing her smile and her laugh." He also missed the day, a month before the birth, when a flood swept through their house and destroyed half their possessions. "I sat on my front porch and just lost it," Trent said. "But you know, I have an incredible support network here. Friends helped me clean it up, and I moved on." 'My soul mate' Shand Mayville, 41, is the wife of the brigade commander, Col. William Mayville. Her father graduated from West Point and her oldest son just entered there, so she knows what is expected of a military family. Yet, she said, she was not sure she could cope. "I have known Bill since I was 19," she said. "He is my best friend, my soul mate. So when he left... I think I would have liked to have crawled in my bed and just stayed there until it was all over. But my kids needed to see their friends and graduate from high school and go off to college - they needed to move on. It was hard to get a balance going, but we finally did." She added: "The hardest thing for me has been for my son to graduate from high school and go off to college and his dad not be there." Anita Petit, 39, is married to Maj. Kevin Petit, who has been gone longer than most because he helped plan the jump. She said she had grown from the experience of being a single mother to her children, ages 7, 4, 2 and 1. "I'm having to fix the house, I'm having to fix the car, and do things that I wasn't prepared for. I know I should have been, but I just depended on my husband so much," she said. "So it's been a good learning experience. It's made me more independent." To many Army families, Vicenza is a plum posting, given its proximity to the Alps, the sea, and Verona and Venice. But living in Italy can be a challenge, particularly for young people who had never traveled abroad. "It's 2 a.m., you've got a sick baby, you don't speak Italian, and you have to get up in the middle of the night and get to the Italian hospital because we don't have a hospital," Turner said. "That's the type of thing that happens all the time." Holidays can be especially tough. Individual companies and battalions have hosted parties this week, and the post chapel scheduled Christmas Eve and Christmas services. But there is only so much the Army can do to fill the hole left by absent loved ones. Some 173d soldiers have returned with shattering injuries. Some have come back in body bags. And some spouses have filed for divorce, never having bargained for a yearlong separation. There is talk around post that, when the Iraq deployment ends, the Army will see an exodus of soldiers. Patti George hopes not. She met her husband, deputy brigade commander Randy George, when they attended West Point together. They also served in Desert Storm together. "I think it's worth it for my kids," said George, who is a civilian these days. "Because what he's doing there, maybe the problems will be resolved enough that if [my son] decided to be in the military, they won't have to go and straighten things out again. I'm willing to give this to our family." ====================

Ugh--I know, I know-you'd think if I have my phone with me 24/7 and it never gets turned off (except for the few clumsy times I drop it and it turns off itself) that I wouldn't miss so many calls!! I was in the movies with my mom and my sister, and I thought it was your parents calling. I was going to wait and see if they left a message to see if they needed something or had news ya know, and it only took about 30 seconds to realize it was you and not them. I could barely concentrate on the rest of the movie! I keep hoping you'll call a little later. Well, anyway, I love you and I miss you. Keep safe! love-stephanie

To everyone on the site, we appreciate the support that is constantly being given. To my niece Briana, I will be home soon. To family, I love you all very much. Mother just a little while longer. "HE" is watching over us. To all of the individuals who use this site as a forum for arguments, the hard part of the war is over but the battle is still being fought. It is hard enough to wake up away from our families and love ones. But then to come to a site that is used to support deployed troops and see these negative comments and child like battles take place, it is very de-motivating. If more compassion was used when stating opinion in others emotions, half of these arguments wouldn't take place. As stated previously I am one of these deployed soldiers that read this site. I can't speak for everyone, only myself. The support is loved, the "Jerry Springer Show" we can do wwithout. Thank you all for standing by us. "Sky Soldiers!"

TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF SGT MIKE YASHINSKI- I was shocked to hear about Mike this morning on the radio. If there is anything I can do please don't hesitate to email me or call me, I will help in any way possible. I graduated high school with Mike and we both went to the Army about the same time in '97. I remember the last time I saw Mike when I was stationed in Ft. Irwin (NTC). He came out for a rotation and I got to hang out with him for a few hours. I was surprised to see how much he loved being in the Army. Mike is one of the few people I've met that is truly selfless. He served with pride and courage which is difficult to find anywhere. I am truly blessed to be able to say that Mike was a friend of mine and I am humbled by his dedication and sacrifice to our nation.

PFC DAVID CROSS-CHARLIE CO. 1ST/508TH-- hello my love! How are you doing? I couldn't be better after talking to you for an hour and a half last night!! It was the best Christmas present I could ask for. I kept waiting for the beep after like ten minutes and then we just kept talking and it was so perfect. After we got off the phone, I had a permanent smile plastered on my face. I think my cheeks were sore this morning because I slept in it. haha. I hope you got ahold of your parents lastnight! I know they would've been so excited!! Tomorrow is my birthday, as you know (although you almost forgot), but I'm not sure what we are doing. I think me, Jamie Lou, Brianna, Britney, Brooke, Kandace, and my sister are all going to go do something. I was sick all day today..I think my flu is building up! Hopefully I will get better..I slept from 1:00-5:30 today and I have been lounging ever since. I hope you had a Merry Christmas because you sure made mine special. I love you very much and I miss you more each day! Can't wait to talk to you again. Love-stephanie

A friend told me this poem and made me think of you guys, I am in Australia, but thank you, the British and of course, our guys...you may have read it for those who haven't.. "A Soldiers Poem” TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER. WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, "SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE; I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS." THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL. I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT. THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE." ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT. "MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT." A great job is being done by all of you...Merry Christmas and New Year 8^)

SGT. RICHARD CRAIG BENNETT Baby, I just wanted to say Merry Christmas for you and all of your friends. Yesterday was a very nice day except for a reason. That reason was that I couldn't have you next to me in a day so special. Anyway now I got the Internet in my house in Spain too, so I will check everyday if there's something from you in my e-mail. I love you more than anything and cannot wait to hold you again in my arms. I want my Airbone so so so so badly, you cannot even imagine how badly love. Anyway I hope that you an all your friends have a very nice time in that disgusting country and I wish for all of you to come back very soon. Your gifts are waiting in my tree to be picked up for you. I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, and I could never get tired of loving you because you're the best that happened in my whole life. Take care, I dream of holding you every night.

Let us remember each other and bring each other joy today. I have often read these words on this board "If tomorrow never comes..." reminding us to be kind and understanding with our loved ones who are serving their country overseas on Christmas and all year....WELL...PLEASE BE REMINDED SOLDIERS..."IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES..." YOUR PARENTS MAY NOT HAVE ENOUGH TOMORROWS TO WELCOME YOU HOME...SO HOPE YOU SOLDIERS REMEMBER THAT AS YOU SEND YOUR WORDS TO YOUR PARENTS AND LOVED ONES ON CHRISTMAS DAY...REMEMBER, SOLDIERS...BE MINDFUL OF THE WORDS YOU SAY AND WRITE HOME TO YOUR LOVED ONES...FOR...THERE MAY BE NO TOMORROW...AND YOU MAY LIVE TO COME BACK TO AMERICA...BUT YOUR PARENTS MAY NOT...BLESSINGS TO ALL YOU WHO SACFIFICE FOR US IN IRAQ TODAY...MERRY CHRISTMAS..."IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES..." HOPE YOU WROTE OR PHONED KIND MESSAGES TO YOUR PARENTS THIS CHRISTMAS...

Merry Christmas from the Fallen Angels! The men are doing great, Holiday Spirits are up and everyone is celebrating. Yesterday in military fashion, for Christmas dinner, everyone had Pizza and Non-Alcoholic Beer. We know it wasn't much but it was something. Some even participated in "shotgunning" a Non-Alcoholic Beer. Stupid college tricks revisited. The Fallen Angels and the rest of the Company will be making their way to the internet and phone to call friends and family for the holidays. 1ST Platoon had a Platoon Christmas photo taken and we'll try to get it on the website soon. We should be able to get a photo of 2nd and 3rd soon. Happy Holidays. SFC Lauer

To all the brave soldiers of the 173rd. As dawn breaks on Christmas day in Iraq we want you all to know we are praying for you continually. We thank you for the risks you are taking and the sacrifices you are making for the cause of our freedom. What you are doing is important and is appreciated by all of us who understand the necessity of standing up against those in the world who seek to cripple our nation through violence and terror. You have sent a message that has been heard around the world that we will not stand by while any organization or nation makes preparations to attack or threaten us. All Americans should be eternally grateful to you (and most of us are). We are proud of all of you. May you experience the peace, joy, hope & love that Jesus brought to us that first Christmas on this special day. May God bless America and may God bless each and everyone of you in the 173rd. Proud Parents of Shane Kelley-C Co., 1-508. (If you see him please tell him hello and that he is in our prayers & thoughts continually)

Christmas is fast approaching. My thoughts are with you guys more and more as I reflect back to 1968 and "my" most memorable Xmas huddling under a poncho in six inches of water & mud reading Xmas cards from strangers in "the world". Those cards gave me a warm feeling at Xmas I have never felt since. It was the simplest and yet best Xmas I have ever had. It isn't about things..... Since then I have had kids, raised a family and had many great times, but at Xmas my thoughts are with "The Herd". I wish I were with you, but will have to be content with flying the 173rd flag and jumping (Powered Parachute) with the "Flying Wing" painted on the canopy of my chute You guys take care and watch your backs. I sure will responding to your not appreciating your child cussing at you (with abusive behav.) as a child. (btw. I'm not a parent, and never been one, and I can only guess parenting would be the toughest jobs ever, even tougher than being a combat troop!) I'd say just one thing! being a parent does and will never ever give the right to not give space to a son/daughter when he/she's going thru rough times. I having had cancer and with only having been diagnosed for 5 days, have been treated so weirdly by my mother, where she actually asked me to literally walk with my big luggages when i was just 3 days out of surgery with a wounded leg, could hardly walk, and go to my next suite of treatments in a different country on my own, traveling all the way over the Atlantic, on my own, with my cancer, and getting all those weird comments from my mom. What do you expect? Everybody is human, just like my mom, so I had to argue with her, and talk rudely, eventhough i didn't meant to. And it hurt afterwards, because I talked that way. But whether I behaved that way or not, parents should take a look at themselves and at least once or twice in their lives try to see if they make any errors or stuff that'd may be agitate the child! SO PLEASE CUT THE CRAP, AND DO SOME ACTION! BE PATIENT WITH YOUR KIDS! THEY're your only kids, and you're their only parents! No matter how old they are! Just try and understand why they do what they're doing especially when it's negative! Like in one of the other messages, there may be no tomorrow!

As someone who has dealt with a loved one with PTSD I can tell you it is NOT an easy thing to go through. They will often not know how to deal with being loved, held or having someone try to understand their hurt. Because they cannot understand themselves it puts a lot of strain on all involved. From what I see you have written about your son there is definatly a bit of PTSD mixed with possbile other mental health issues. His usage of foul language may also be attributed to his Army experiences because when you join the Army you are taught a whole new way to cuss others out! I never knew there were so many new foul words out there until I was in the Army! Some make absolutely no sense, but still it is a very common usage amoungst troops. They used to use the term "He cusses like a sailor.." but after meeting a paratrooper...we can put those sailors to waste! I don't disagree with your not condoning his abusive behavior to his mother either verbally, or other wise. Do not except that from anyone! Abuse is abuse, but you have to look at the under lining issue to the actions. These guys have seen and expierenced things that most civi's would never be able to come away from sane. Still the public says "they signed on the dotted line.." still that is not an exceptable answer to the problem of mental health issues and soldiers. After 8 years of service there is a lot of things that have changed for him, and he may not know how to relate to you as he used to. There is no real way to explain what the Army does to change a person, but it does change you..forever. I often tease that someday I will get some therapy to help me forget all the green machine memories so I can live outside the "green blood". In all honesty that will NOT happen, it will forever be apart of my life. I wish you the best of luck with your son. Just love him and try to work as much as you can out. I think it was best said "If tomorrow never comes..."

Sorry I misunderstood - best of luck with your son. But I stand by my basic premise that he is used to being treated like an adult and unfortunately some of his "army" behavior is very similar to "fraternity" behavior from college. He'll outgrow some of it, learn when it is appropriate and not, and do some growing up. Good luck - maybe we have tied up this site with our philosophy long enough. Blaming the Army and STATING THAT OUR SON'S Behavior CHANGED after he went in the Army do not mean the same thing...HERE IS WHAT I WROTE: This is just unacceptable in our home...And I would hope that if the Army knew we experienced these changes in our son that they would not find them acceptable either...WE DO LOVE HIM AND WANT HIM HOME NO MATTER WHAT CONDITION HE IS IN. Thanks also for your concern and your advice because it is very good advice...except again..it doesn't necessarily apply to our situation since...WE DON'T consider USING THE "F" WORD every other word when speaking to his mother in our home or any place else as MATURE ADULT BEHAVIOR. And there are many other behaviors that our son has that are not a sign of MATURE ADULT BEHAVIOR either...He has adult siblings who are younger who act much more mature than he does and they do not speak to us like that in our home or their homes... no matter if they agree with us or not...One must behave like a mature adult in the company of their parents to be perceived and respected as an adult. Pretty difficult to respect someone who is using profanity every word when talking to their mother in our home. AGAIN...NO BLAMING OF THE ARMY HERE...JUST A COINCIDENCE THAT HE STARTED ACTING LIKE THIS WHEN HE WAS IN THE 82nd...Your advice is very good though and very welcome. Because we do want to help our son so that this war and his choices in behaviors do not destroy him. Our son has not had an easy life or the best of luck since has been in the Army...We love him...And we can't be anything but his parents...Just because he is an adult and we respect him as an adult, does not make him our equal...the relationship does not change...We are his parents...he is our son...We cannot treat him like he is NOT our SON OR DAUGHTER just because he is an adult. He is our son and will always be our son...grown or not. (afterall he hardly has a curfew you know...and we aren't financially responsible for him either---but that still does not make it okay to use profanity with ANYONE...but ESPECIALLY ONE'S MOTHER). Happy Holidays! HooRah!

I'm sorry you are having problems with your son since he joined the Army, but blaming the Army for your son's attitude and behavior problems is a cop-out. I guarantee this attitude and talking-back in not tolerated by his chain-of-command either. However, I have seen this behavior frequently and it has nothing to do with joining the Army, it has everything to do with moving away from home. And when these young people return home they find themselves still treated like the son or daughter, rather than the adult they have become. Treat your son with respect and you will get it in return - but don't blame this on the Army. I've seen it and I know better.

Thanks for the information about how we as parents should learn to understand and make our son feel comfortable with the changes in the behaviors that were induced by his now 8 years of Army service. Again, we would not know if our son will come back with PTSD. But we are not ever going to accept him using the "F" word when he speaks to his mother...Nor are we going to be supportive of his direct threats to us or negative responses to us...We are not going to accept him telling his mother to shut-up in our home or anyone elses home...These are the behaviors he began using on us when he served in the 82nd...and he doesn't even think of trying these with me his father...but he is very verbally abusive with his mother...and these are things that started when he was in the Army...in fact, we worry that his personality has changed so much since he went in the Army...we worry that he will be like Timothy McVey...He just shows alot of misdirected and inappropriate anger...This is not PTSD...This is just unacceptable in our home...And I would hope that if the Army knew we experienced these changes in our son that they would not find them acceptable either...WE DO LOVE HIM AND WANT HIM HOME NO MATTER WHAT CONDITION HE IS IN...But there are just some behaviors that he did not do when he lived at home that changed when he went in the Army that we know he could make better choices about...They are not a disorder...They are disrespectful, and dishonorable.

PFC DAVID CROSS-CHARLIE CO. 1ST/508TH--Hey sweetie! How are you doing? I wrote you a letter this morning, so it's being mailed off now. I went to your parents house lastnight to visit before Christmas. I had such a good time! It always feels so good to go back there, even though I don't get to visit much. Nikki called while I was there and got on the phone with me to wish me a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. It was very sweet of her--she said if I was ever up for a road trip I could come see her! Anyway, your mom made copies of two of the pictures of you out of the roll you sent back to her. They were cute! I am about to go to work soon. My mom is taking my cel phone in to have it fixed today. I think I am cursed with bad cel phones! Well, I hope you have a very good day and a Happy Christmas Eve! Whoever left the message about the Jan 1 end for R&R did us all a terrible disservice. If they are in the command, they should identify themselves so we know it is good information. Since they did not identify themselves I am assuming they are not in the loop and are just passing more unsubstantiated info. My latest info - as others have discussed here - is that R&R will end on Jan 31 for the 173rd in order to prepare for a March return to Italy. But even that is unofficial ----- I am just continuing to hope that young single soldiers get to come home soon for a visit, but if not, I am prepared to live with that too.

Hi, thanks for your reply, and I checked out the PTSD power point demo. And read about PTSD on http://www.ncptsd.org/war/needs_assess_iraq.htm . However, the reason I asked about others dealing with a returning soldier's situation is bec. eventhough they are the ones who need more support bec. of their situation, their loved ones, friends and family need to learn and find a way to cope with it so that they can give positive support when and if they have to. It's tricky to see one go thru trouble yet that puts you into pain, too. Your son may have become what you didn't raise him to be bec. of the army, but this is exactly what im talking about, there must be a way for you to be patient about it and not take it wrong so that he'd feel he's secure and sound and that he's getting support and all. *sigh* This is really tricky!

To PFC David Cross--C Company 1/508- Season's Greeting DJ. Dad and I are meeting Nikki in South Carolina for Christmas with "little man", Chris and Melodie. We love you and miss you and wish you could be there too. We are praying for you and the 173rd's safety each and every day. We had Christmas with Stephanie last night. You picked a winner there!:) We got your envelope with the copy of Stars and Stripes, camera, and short letter written the day after Thanksgiving. It only took a month!to reach us. I guess the holiday mail slowed things down. I've mailed the items you requested. Thanks for the 2 pictures of you on the camera you sent. Is the mouse and new pet? If you try to call over Christmas-call us at Chris's or my cell phone. Sorry we missed your call last Thursday. Who knew you could make a call when it was actually "normal" hours?:) Dad was in Texas and I had taken my class out for a short break when we missed your call. Don't give up on trying to reach us-try again please. Andrew called and left a number you can call to reach him over there. I'll give it to you when you call and I'll mail it to you too. Dad has met some of your "herd" brothers in his travels the last few months. He'll tell you all about it when we see you. Merry Christmas! and remember Jesus is the reason for the season. We love you and are so proud of you and your comrades. Be careful and Thank you for all that you are doing. Love ya, Mom

Mr. Bradley has and excellent link on this website at the bottom right hand corner of his main webpage. It is called P.T.S.D. & You....I suggest you start there with that information that he has so kindly provided. My bet the information is very focused on the needs of soldiers (if I know Mr. Bradley, it will provide you with a good resource). And yes...I have had personal experiences with PTSD. As far as our son having it, that I wouldn't know. But what I do know is that he is definately not the positive young son that my husband and I brought into this world and raised...The Army has had a very negative impact on his behavior with family members and we are not pleased with what they have allowed him to become in the name of serving our country...but then again...we know the Army does not care one bit about us as the parents of one of their soldiers...But, rest assured...Mr. Bradley does care very deeply about the health and welfare of our soldiers...God Bless Him...Check out his links first because they are just wonderful...

Dear Mike Ramirez, hey babe I'm so glad that you guys got the stockings that we sent and all the other packages. I just wish you could be home for christmas. Our one year is on the 27th, funny it seems like just yesterday you were home and going snowboarding with Jeff, Issac, and I. Can't wait to do it all over again. Have a great christmas, and though you can't be here, I know that you are always in my heart. Loving you always, Your GF.

PFC CHRISTIAN JAMES DEVOR HHC 1/508 INF BN MORTARS--Sending greetings from Michigan! Not sure if you will be able to get back to an email site, but wanted to reassure you that we are praying for you and your unit 24/7, that God will keep you safe in His hands...and those are the best hands in the world to be in! We are looking to see you again real soon, and we love you! Also wondering if anyone has heard if R&R has resumed since the stop movement. We received a call from our son in Oct that said they had expected R&R to be complete by Jan 31...did amyone else receive the same news? To all our Military Servicemen and Women, know that people you will probably never even meet are praying for you, and wishing you peace, joy and clarity of mind in this Holiday Season...have a MERRY CHRISTMAS, keep looking up, and may you return to your loved ones safe and secure real soon! Blessings....Pastor & Mrs. James DeVor
