Hi ADAM ESPENHOVER -- I keep checking this website everyday in hopes there is some verification of how or where you are and most importantly WHEN YOU ARE GOING HOME! I wish I knew what you needed over there. I haven't sent anything lately, other than smokes, because we've not heard if you received all of our other packages and mail. From other postings on this site it appears stuff is now getting to you but we're not sure what you want or need. I know you have other things to do besides write letters but hopefully you can get one off to your mom or dad soon. We have heard that you may be going back to Italy in about 6 weeks. That would be terrific but I really am not sure where that information came from so maybe we shouldn't count on it. Today is a rainy, dreary day but we didn't get the severe weather that was predicted. The news has pretty much deserted you guys--the channels that used to carry the Iraq war news 24/7 are now carrying paid advertising and other junk. As I've said before, I'm just hoping these messages are getting to you so I want you to know that you are loved and thought about constantly. Take care and call or write as soon as you have a chance. I'm hoping you have everyone's phone number and/or address. Love, Diane

Love you tons, Mom PS: Jezebel tripped and fell during a cross country competition at a show on Saturday...and 'Manda cushioned her fall. 'Manda isn't sporting a cast, but the orthopedic doc thinks a small bone is broken in her elbow. You know your sister -- she's taking the whole incident in stride. :-) Oh, and Jez has a scrape on her leg and a little boo-boo on her head, but is okay.

I'm happy you started receiving letters and packages, hopefully there are more coming!!!I talked to your mom last night and even though I promised not to tell her what you asked me to, I couldn't help that. If it is like that, well love of my life you deserve a huge kick where the sun doesn't shine!!!I got so worried on the phone, and by the way what the hell did you have to laugh for? Hi Richie Farquhar..how are things in the sand tonight? Cold here but no bugs yet. We are heading to Port Huron this weekend so we will be checking in with your mom and dad. We say all of them last month and met Kristy's boyfriend when we were there. I see from Jamie's note that her dad is doing better that will make Uncle Gary happy..I'm sure by now you know they were best buddies growing up in Marysville. Don't know if you get to read these or not but I'll keep writing to you just in case. I have tried your email address but they bounce back at me. You made the papers in Onaway last week when a bunch of people from our church put ribbons on the Freedom Tree with your name on them. Your name is also in the window of an office downtown so all the town remembers to pray for you and your safe return...now there are about 25 other names on there too but we only look at yours and Corey's. Did you know your cousin Angela's husband is over there now too? He was in the Marine reserves and got called up. Angela is home with the two little boys. Well enough for now...hugs, much love, prayers and thanks for what you are doing for us. God Bless you and your company!

TO PFC JAROD MARKHAM...2nd/503rd... Jarod, I just wanted to drop you a note to say that Pine Crest is thinking of you and praying for you daily. Your Dad keeps us posted and he was so excited yesterday and today to have received a letter from you this past week end. He is showing it to everyone! I would like to thank you on behalf of the Pine Crest family for the great sacrifice you have made in fighting for our freedoms and for what is right! You are a true HERO and we are so proud of you. I hope by now you have received the packages that we have mailed to you. There have been several letters mailed also from the different classes. All the students here now have a new HERO and are all looking so forward to meeting you someday when you can get a leave and visit us. Your photograph is posted on several honor boards around the campus and teachers constantly ask your Dad about your progress, whereabouts, and how you are doing physically and emotionally. He is so proud of you! Don't worry about him, he has plenty of people here who cares much for him and checks on him daily. He is very respected here and has earned our respect as one of our leaders. He has impressed so many with his knowledge and is such a wonderful asset to this school. I'm certain that you too share his traits and personality. Once again, I can not tell you how proud he is of you and how proud we are as well. Please share our thanks to all the soldiers of your unit and express our sincere gratitude to them as well. Hope to see you when you return. God Bless you! Love, Dana

He complained some, but was happy to be there. For Tom Hudson, the letters brought his 18-year-old son closer to him than ever. The two always had a strong bond, he said, but now each had experienced the horrors of combat and the longing for family. “Well, dad, we’re deep into Iraq now, and we’re starting to get into the crap” Thomas Colin Hudson wrote from Iraq, where he is with the 101st Airborne Division. “Dad, you were right, because I am scared to death. I blew you off when you tried to tell me that would happen, but you were right.” Tom Hudson, a Vietnam veteran and retired Army general, said the letter made him proud for his son. “I’m not a really sensitive man. Not many things get to my heart, but that did. It brought tears to my eyes,” said Hudson. The elation was followed by fear. Hudson said he knew what his son had jumped into, and it frightened him. “I was real scared,” said the 56-year-old. His reaction was common among families as they received their first letters from the front. First there was joy, regardless of what was written. Then, when they had time to read the letters again and think about the words, some worried and some were optimistic, but most felt a little bit of both. The letters, families said, were often the only sure things they could hold on to as they listened to news of bombings, shootings and fatalities. “No knock on the door” Chris Morang, 60, said she’s thankful her grandson, a Hug High graduate also with the 101st Airborne Division, waited until he felt safe enough and was in the right frame of mind to write home. The Sparks woman said she knew he was close to the Baghdad International Airport bombings, so she was happy he wrote when most of it was over and he was safe. Private Anthony Newman, 19, wrote: “I’ve had some scud missile attacks, nothing to be scared of… I’ve been, well, not scared, but it’s been more of an adrenaline rush.” Morang said the letter she received April 4 worried her, but a letter indicating any fear on his part would have upset her even more. Newman’s mother, Trudi Newman, of Henderson, said she’s had little contact with her son the past two months. She said when she received a letter from him in early April, she felt anxiety knowing he was so close to the fighting. “Every time a soldier would be killed in battle, my heart would sink, but then I thought, OK, no knock on the door,” she said. Trudi Newman, 40, is more relaxed now that the intense fighting is over, but she still has every family member and friend call before visiting her. No one knocks on her door without her knowing about it first. Letter on a box On April 17, Reno resident Leslie Burke, 50, received a piece of cardboard, torn off from some sort of box, with no postage whatsoever, but the words “Free Mail” written on it. It was a letter from her son, Cody Burke, 18, a paratrooper with the 173rd Airborne 508th Infantry. She had not heard anything from him since early March. “If I didn’t recognize his handwriting, I’d think it was a joke,” she said. It thrilled her to hear from him. But what he wrote made her even happier. “Right now, I’m happier and more relaxed than I’ve been in a while,” Burke wrote. She said that before the letter she wasn’t sure he was alive. Now she carries the cardboard in her purse wherever she goes. “(I’m) just doing some missions and making money with the biggest, baddest 60-mm mortar section in Iraq. Love you all, Cody.” Finding new words Kellie Roberson’s husband, Bobby is in the 152nd Security Forces Squadron at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. His letters, some in email, revealed a side the 34-year-old Sparks woman had not seen. “He is not a very vocal person, and so the letters mean an awful lot because he says a lot in them that he normally would not say. The war has changed him in that respect, he’s much more open with his feelings,” said Roberson. He wrote: “What do you want to do when I get home? I'm thinking about us taking another vacation to your mom’s. I would love to see them and I think she might like to see me… I got your email attachment, you are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.” Still waiting Some are still waiting to hear from their loved ones. Reno resident Ellen Wright has not heard from her son, Jarett, 20, who’s with the 3rd Battalion 5th Marine Regiment, since receiving a letter from him Mar. 27 dated three weeks earlier. She thinks she saw a photo of him in the Reno Gazette-Journal, but can’t confirm it. “Every day you go to the mailbox and when you don’t get a letter from him you’re disappointed,” she said. Beverly Tipps, 26, of Hemet, Calif., remembers that month and a half when she never heard from her husband, Staff Sgt. Allen Tipps with the Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines. She said watching the war coverage and not knowing how close he was to it was unnerving and scary. She said hearing about casualties was the worst. “You sit for 24 to 48 hours hoping it’s not your husband. Then time goes by and nobody calls and so you know they’re OK,” she said. Then she saw a photo of him in the Reno Gazette-Journal. She still hadn’t read any of his letters yet, but the photo was good enough. “Just imagining his voice, seeing him there, that he’s doing OK, made me feel better,” she said.

This is a message for my little brother SPC Kris Knight, who is in Kirkuk, Iraq. I was just thinking about you today, I am glad that I got to speak with you last Tuesday, and again on Saturday. I miss you a lot, I know that you had a close call on Friday. I am glad that you are okay. I still am lighting a lot of candles for you and the other soliders at Saint Thomas More. I took care of Jacenya on Thursday, we had a great time, she played up in her room, and helped me clean the house. She is getting so big, and so smart. She misses you a lot too, and asks us when you can come home again. I hope you get a chance to read this. I love you. Jessica

Spec James Jeleniowski- Hi Babe, I heard that some of the soldiers have been able to get these messeges so I thought I would give it a try. I just want to let you know how much I (& everyone) miss you, and we're all so proud of you and your friends. I think of you 24/7, and I don't want you to worry too much about me, even though I know how you hate when I say that, I'm doing fine. I look forward to getting another call from you, & I haven't gotten any more of the letters you said you sent:(. Just look forward, as I do, to when you come home, and we can start the beginning of our lives together. I miss having my goofy other half around to make me laugh. I'm going to the Kentucky Derby this weekend to be there for my dad, so you can call me on my cell if you get the chance...wish us luck, hopefully he's on the winner. I love you with all of my heart and soul and hope to hear from you soon. Love Forever...Ashley...XOXOXOXOXO's

Sgt Ben Keener C/1-508th-4/28/03-We woke up to about 6 inches of snow again this morning. I miss talking to you. We were doing alot of that the last few weeks before you guys deployed. We went to the Asparagus Festival in Stockton this weekend with Myndi and Ilea. Ryan called last saturday he wanted to know if we had heard from you and said to tell he loves you. The news media has dropped Iraq like a hot potato, everyone with loved ones over there is desparate for news and wondering when they can expect them home. Me too. Maybe a battalion of MOM's could clear up some of that mess. Not much to tell we love bunches and hope you'll be home soon. Tell your squad to write their mom's, wives and girlfriends your MOM says so and she's meaner than you. Love Mom

To spec Thomas Hoover: Hello, your mother found this web site earlier today. She gave me the address so that I might be able to get a hold of you. I'm not going to put any personal stuff in here because I don't want anybody else reading it. I miss you! Rheannah is getting so big. she is almost 30 inches long and weighes almost 14 pounds. I'm mad at you becaused you lied to me!! You told me that you weren't going to be deployed anywhere. you promised !! I know that was probaly for security reasons, but you didn't have to promise me that. School started last week. so far weve had 5 tests I got 4-100's and1-97 Im doing good and hopefully the time will just pass right by. and maybe the timing will be close so that when you get back to Italy or maybe here???? that school will be over with And that I pass with a really good grade so if I decide to go to nursing school I'll get in with no problem that way I CAN HAVE SOME OF MY OWN MONEY with out you or your mother getting my ass all the time I have my own ambitions , just like you do with the army and I'm not going to give every thing up for you like I have in the past. so you see some thing are going to change when I move to Italy with Rheannah. missing you Love, your wife Jinnene

Does anyone know if there is any truth in that? God bless the 173rd and every branch of military. And DJ, i miss you so much as well as your whole family! You mean so much to each and everyone one of us. I thank God every day for bringing you into my life. ADAM ESPENHOVER--It's pretty obvious to me that we need to get more computers in the family. Or at least train those who have them how to send e-mail!! I saw an e-mail on the message board that said you were getting these messages so I'm going to keep writing. I sent another goodie package off Friday--don't know how long it takes to get there but I won't complain if you are already on the way home when the package gets to Iraq. I figure you should make a lot of friends with all the Marlboro Lights coming your way because there is no possible way you can smoke them all yourself. Not much going on around here. It's very warm now--beautiful days. Time to get the camper out. We're going to have a belated Easter this coming Sunday. I think almost everybody is going to make it -- except you of course and Jesse. Well, Adam ole' boy, take care and hope you get home soon. Love, Diane. P.S. Scott can't figure out why I will buy cigarettes for you but not him.

AIRBORNE!!! Sgt Major William' I was given your e-mail address after I sent the following to the seta e-mail address. Being an NCO myself I am aware that that is where one goes when one whats something done and done now. I would appreciate any assistance, forwardances, or directions that you could send my way. I have been informed that so far as he knows, Col. Smith one of the longest termed presidents of our 173rd Airborne Brigade (Sep) Society, that our Sky Soldiers have been blessed by the Lord with no WIA or KIA's. He is also the president at the time that asked for a 'volunteer' to take over as KIA List Coordinator for 'the Herd'. Col Daniels (deceased) had carried this honor. This list was started in Nam and carried home with our colors, and has been and still needs to be updated and researched from Nam. I proudly was appointed to this most honorable duty. Sadly, but, as a part of war unfortunately there will/maybe some in most wars. I pray that a KIA List will or have not had to have been started. If one of our Sky Soldiers should fall I would be sadly honored to offer any assistance and or continue them into our original list. AIRBORNE!!! Sgt David A Watson Charlie 1/503 67-68 Task Force Black (Dak To) 173rd Airborne Brigade (Sep) KIA List Coordinator AIRBORNE!!! Sky Soldiers err-ah!, Stand In the Door! AIRBORNE!!! All the Way! Gung Ho! and as we said in Nam 'Fuckin A'. I am so truly proud of you. My first team leader, SSgt 'Sgt Rock' Jerry Curry, who spent 3 days short of a 4 year tour in Nam and I watch CNN 24/7. We both looked at one another when they announced that Turkey would not let the 'Funny 4th' cross their lands, and said here comes 'the New Herd'. Which by the way you are not known now as, you are 'the Herd'. When we watched your 'combat blast' CNN announced it as the 101st (Puckin' Buzzards) but we knew, the entire 'Herd' here at home did as well. It took a thousand phone calls from all of us to finally get CNN to recant and say that, it was the 'Elite Unit' of the 173rd Airborne Brigade (Sep) that had made that historic jump. AIRBORNE!!! About 600 of us old Sky Soldiers are in contact via the e-mails. And, we are so pissed that all we hear is the 3rd and the Marines. But, some of us feel that there may be a reason for that. You guys may be like Delta and not even 'be'. Most of the troopers here at home would truly love to be there beside you 'watching your backs'. When I went to the enlistment office like so many others, although the enlistment officer wanted the 'credits', they laugh politely and said that it would take a battalion of you all to watch each of our backs. lol They did offer that if it hit our shores that we would be called to volunteer to take over the National Guard duties of protecting our bases and facilities that they are doing such a fine and important job of doing. You should be proud of them. When I went through training at Fort Gordon (Airborne AIT) and at Fort Benning we were constantly reminded that if any soldier, especially a paratrooper did not respect every man and woman of each and every branch and duty while we were in combat then we were fools. Because, we would never survive without the entire support of all branches as one unit. Charlie 1/503, my unit, learned that well on Veterans Day '67 on Hill 889 after 'intentionally surrounding' a brigade of Mr. Charle's finest in one of their best ambushes, that, we knew were there. After all as we were taught. "Paratroopers are dropped into the enemy to distract and draw as much of the enemies forces about themselves. And, Gentlemen once you have done so and the battle is on you will have a 360 degree of kill zone and will have obtained your mission. YOU! Will have them surrounded you enemy." God! I miss not being there with you all. When you became AIRBORNE!!! You are AIRBORNE!!! for the rest of your life. eerah! I have a request. Lol, I know that who ever receives this first is not on the line, in the field and will be able to read this. My request: That as many of the Sky Soldiers as possible, especially those with the least amount of mail, receive this. If Col Yarborough and/or CSM Kilgore were fortunate enough to join you in any capacity that they receive this. As well as Joseph Hartranft and John Ryan, ranks etc. unknown. And as many of the Honor Guard members that attended and represented you all at our reunions. And especially Spec 4 Paul D Nguyen, 1/508 for which I am sending the following letter. As well as the Commander his BN Commander and CO. AIRBORNE!!! Paul, What an honor it was for you to present me with the new field patch and your 'blood wings'. The friend that you left them with, gave them to me the first time that I saw him. He said that you had him and all my friends listening to your story about how you became a Sky Soldier, almost in tears. They were so impressed with your demeanor and how you carried your self. I am so proud of you. If these are your 'blood wings' you must trade me with a pair you purchase. Every Sky Soldier here at home still has theirs as I do. I will stop by and visit your parents. Hope that this finds all of you and your fellow Sky Soldiers in good health and spirits. Hope to see you all at the reunions when possible. For three years a young high school student where I lived in CA would yell AIRBORNE!!! every time he saw me riding my bike around. I always yelled back 'All the Way'. One day I went by a house and he was out front watering the front yard. I did a u-turn and pulled up in front of him. He turned around and yelled hey Airborne. I freaked he was Vietnamese. (Paul, forgive me for that statement, but, you may understand if you have any ill feelings for 'rag heads' or 'skinnies' if you all have a name or are permitted to have a name for 'your' enemy of this particular war.) I talked to him with respect. He went on to tell me proudly that he was a senior and graduating soon, he wanted to go into the service. I told him go into the Army, Go Airborne, become a Ranger and request the 'Herd'. After I left for Tucson he did. Last Thanksgiving, '02, I was here in Anaheim and had just left to go back to Tucson. The next day he proudly marched wearing his dressed greens, a Red Beret into the pizza parlor that I frequented and watched sports with my buddies. Asking for me he was told that I had left and would be back sooner a later. He told my friends about the whole story and how proud that he was. He was leaving over seas the next day. He gave one of my friends a gift to give to me. It is a Herd patch and a set of wings that he said that he jumped with. If they are your 'blood wings', I feel that you should have them back. But, I am sure they are a set you jumped with with the intention of giving to me. Sure hope you were fortunate enough to have made the jump into Irag with the 1/508. I am so Proud of you and all of your Sky Soldier buddies. Tell then not to worry about their loved ones here at home. The remaining and capable 25,000+ 'Sky Soldiers here have their backs and your home land, 'The United States of America'. AIRBORNE!!! Sgt David A Watson Charlie 1/503 67-68 Task Force Black (Dak To) KIA List Coordinator 173rd Airborne Brigade (Sep)

To All the loved ones of the 173rd..... This site is wonderful and the creater is a Hero to me as well. Somehow, Someway, my son PFC Jarod Markham who is with the 2nd/503rd in Kirkuk DID receive an email that I posted on this site several weeks ago. So I suggest keep writing....I don't know how, but his letter to me Saturday stated that he received a piece of paper with an email from me on it...this is the only email site that I have used, so it is definately from this one.... Apparently some of us are finally getting mail...I received 4 on Saturday dating from late March to April 15th. I also received information from a trust worthy source that our 173rd is now receiving mail also...depending on exactly where they are depends on their ability to receive or write....Someone please correct me if the information that I am about to give is wrong, but to my uderstanding the 2nd/503rd is in Kirkuk....the 1st/508th is in Mosul or remains in Irbil near the original airbase they secured in late March....if anyone knows the whereabouts of others, please post.... They do suggest that you mail them stationary and envelopes when mailing them because some of them are writing on card board, etc. My last care packages contained boxes and boxes of writing pads, pens and envelopes that Jarod will be sharing with others.....there mail back to us is free, so no postage stamps are needed... God Bless you all.....and continue to PUSH (pray until something happens).... TO Jarod my son....Thinking of you constantly and praying even more..... Hope all is well, keep your head up, this will be over soon... Love you and miss you much!! Dad

1LT David Bernstein, 2nd platoon, B-company, 1-508th Infantry, Hi Sweetheart, happy anniversary... Today Andrea got a letter from Josh and I was so excited for her. I don't care how slowly mail, if any, gets to me, just as long as you are getting a steady stream of mail. I'd rather have you more rested or in the shade someplace than you worrying about writing. I hope you're getting these messages too. I hate sounding so dumb and on a message board, but I miss you so much. I got out of a speeding ticket :) I will tell you that story another time. Petey and I played tennis for the first time this year, yesterday and we called it ultimate tennis because I'm so horrible that I made him run over two courts. He and I are your biggest fans. I hope SFC Lauer and you are doing alright. I also hope Tom is making you laugh enough. He is great like that. Everyone always asks and says the most awesome things about you. You are such a positive person, I know you are making everyone's time there a little easier. I know you are probably tan, but please take the time to put on sunscreen... your body lasts a lifetime! Happy 23 month anniversary again Davey. I love you w/AMH, Alex
