My younger Brother served with the 173rd airborne in Viet Nam where he received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He recently passed away,( October 31, 2007) and asked that his ashes be dropped from the sky. I was a United States Marine and know little about how to accomplish his last request of me, however, I am committed to finding out. I understand that the 82nd Airborne will drop the ashes of former members prior to a practice jump, and I wonder if there is something like that for former 173rd members. My Brother was Brian L. Coughlin, former Sgt. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks

I am trying to find a CSM Misch for a friend of yours. SSG Icke Mellinger and I spoke the other day and he asked if I knew of a way to find Soldiers from the past. I want to help Icke out and put a closure to his years of wondering. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. CSM Grove

Anyone know this guy? [Lee Kramer, he's about 61 yrs of age.] [Ranger Assn or 75th Ranger Assn] I don't know if he went to Ranger school or not or if he served in V/N with a LRRP out-fit. I guess his days are number [Cancer], and this gal was wondering if maybe she could connect with some of his old friends. She did mention, he's got all the patches on his car. I just read that Gary Cupit committed suicide. I was his Ranger buddy. Cupit, where. What... is it like in paradise? Why. Aren't you at the end of the phone I never rang? Rang, ranger. God, how it hurt and how it ended in the end. Who was that mowing the parade field for screwing up on graduatiion day? Dick Meadows was there pinning us. Lieutenant Colonel Sydnor saying stay in shape all your life. No one else I know but you could laugh so much at what I know. My God, take him in Your arms. This man who saw the ghost of a man still living and ran up on the stage yelling "You. You. You. You son of a bitch, you son of a bitch, you're supposed to be dead! I thought you were dead! My God." Is it true? Cupit. You killed yourself? No. What's your number? I'll call. Gary. It's Wayne Hill. Ranger School. Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit. Goddammit sir. Sargeant Major, goddammit yourself. Where are the edges? Doesn't matter. How far down is it? You. Hey. Wait. Wait, damn it, till I get there.

My half brother David P. Farnkoff served in Vietnam in 1968 in the 173 rd airborn. David served in 1968 and was a E4, his army number was RA14953019. This is all the information I have on him. David came back from the war with problems and was admited to a VA hospital in Waco Texas. After leaving the hospital, he took off,and never returned. My mother passed away in 1993 without ever seeing her son again. I would love to see my brother again or if he is gone, some closure. Any help in any way would appreciated. Is there a web site that helps families find their lost veterans family memebers? Thanks, Grant Hartman

I am looking for information on a Bruce DeLong. I met him recently at a WWII reenactment and spoke with him about his time in the 173rd. The picture of the team in the LRRP section (the one with the dead tiger) is one he has at his home. Can you ID the troops in the picture? I am the director of a regional veterans museum here in Chattanooga, and would like to use the photo if it is one with my DeLong in it. Let me know if anyone has any information on this vet. Thanks, Louis Varnell Southeast Veterans Museum

I am looking for some information to help with my husbands disability claim. He was with the 173rd at Dak To. Nov 1967- June 1969. There was an incident that he can't remember names. It happened in December 1968 A guy named Cortez driving a jeep with a black PFC handcuffed to the jeep and a SSGT named Glen Rountree. Cortez and Rountree were injured in a ambush and Rountree later died of his wounds. The black PFC was killed on the spot. He could not get cover. My husband can't remember the date and the soldier that was killed name. Any information on this incident would be appreciated. Thank you

Hello all. My name is Matt. First off, I would like to thank each and every member of the United States military, both past and present, for putting foot to ass to keep America safe. I am not a soldier, but there is nothing I want more than to be one. I recently heard the Big and Rich song " 8th of November" and was wondering exactly what happened to the 173d on that day. If anyone has the time, I would appreciate the enlightenment. Thank you in advance and thanks again for all your hard work and dedication. God Bless, Matt

I was on Okinawa with the herd in 64-65. I came into the LRP platoon before Christmas of 65, and stayed until September of 66. I was on several teams: Smith, Van Boven, Jones, mostly, were my team leaders. I remember a lot of names, but can't always keep them straight. Anybody who was there with me, I'd be happy to hear from you.

Attn. Bret Newmyer- Hey, Cuz, I was just surfing the web and found this site and a couple messages from your parents, etc. I have been busy raising my kiddos on my own, but with the family's and God's help. I am getting married again in July, this time to a wonderful guy. This one has much more class. He served active Army for 3 years and has spent the last 9 in the National Guard. You are now and have always been in my prayers. I am so proud to be related to one of our HEROES. My kids are always keeping me on my toes and when you get to visit Granpa again, check out how much my son looks like Tim. LOL I just wanted to drop you a line and let you know how proud we all are ( the whole fanm damily) of you and how much we love you! Your lil' Cuz- Kathie

My name is Anita Hartsell. I am a Veteran’s Service Officer in Brunswick County, NC. I am trying to assist the widow of a veteran who served in Okinawa in 1963-1964 and remembered being in: 1) Taiwan a. Supply Point b. Drop Zone 2) Ryukyu Islands (Irimote Jungle) a. Supply Point b. LZ c. Water/Shower Point 3) Philippines a. Rural Trials and Roads This veteran, Gary Elmore, passed away 9-7-05. He was a Paratrooper with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, HQ Co., Support Bn. Mr. Elmore was diagnosed with Lung Cancer and had a claim in prior to his death. He said he was exposed to herbicides during his tour in 1963-1964. In # 1 & 2 above, he remembered seeing the chemicals being stored in barrels, being mixed and them being dispersed by backpack and ¾ ton trucks. In # 3, he said the chemicals were being sprayed by backpacks. You may not have known Mr. Elmore, but by any chance, do you remember them ever spraying any types of Herbicides in these above mentioned locations? I’ve been trying to do research on the Internet to help Mr. Elmore’s wife and 15 year old son with their claim. Unfortunately I am not getting very far in the way of evidence. If you remember anything at all in regards to this, or know someone I might contact in regards to this, I would greatly appreciate any assistance you could provide. Thank you so much for your time in this matter, but most of all, may I say thank-you to you for your service to our country and for all the sacrifices you have made. Sincerely, Anita Hartsell Brunswick County Veterans Service Officer P.O. Box 249 Bolivia, NC 28422 (910) 253-2233 ahartsell@brunsco.net
