Seeking first hand information along with any other additional tips from anyone to everyone, and who has made a "Return Trip" to The RVN, and DID NOT utilized one of the Tour Companies when you did so, choosing to be your own tour guide upon your journey back? Myself & another former member of Charlie Co./3rd Batt. / 69-70 are making plans to return this November, and we would like correspond with those (at length) who have any tips, or suggestions that we may find to be useful when both planning, and once we have arrived back in The RVN. Please contact : Mike Parker <mptwo7@aol.com> and/or Rick 'Rusty' Rust <grrust@gmail.com> with your help. Also...we are open to additional travel companions should anyone be interested and would like to go only with a small group that intends on being our own tour guides (with, of course, a little help from the Locals). LZ ENGLISH & LZ UPLIFT will both be on the list of things to see...anything else is open to suggestion. Again...please feel free to contact either of us at anytime, and be prepared to answer numerous questions as we are only wanting for this thing to come off right. Peace...M.P. 69-70

After posting request to find friend of my husbands, I read the other postings..I see names that Art has mentioned during our marriage on the board..Art has Hepatitis C from what we believe was a bout with Malaria in late 1969..he was walking point and ran into a swarm of mosquitos with 9 other men..I have tracked 4 down with Hep C and 2 have died already..Art is going to be 61 in June and was told that he would never live this long..but good care and healthy habits has made him a survivor..I have MS, but still am able to care for both of us..the military has been good and given us enough money to live on..Art has Aide and Attendance money as well as his Disability..if anyone is trying to get Disability or Aide and Attendance, write me and I will give you some tips on how to get it quicker..it only took us 7 months to get Disability back in`99', then we got Aide and Attendance money in 4/07 because we both needed to hire help around house and it provides that money..these are great programs that really work if you know who to talk to.. Art was with the 82nd, 101st and 173rd..his time with the Herd was 4/49-4/70, then he came home..he had his bad times and good times, but decided early to not drink nor drug, so that is why he is alive now..he would love to hear from others who served with him or might have known Sgt. Garrett written by loving wife, Roxanne, Proud wife of a Sky Soldier

RETURN to SOUTH VIET NAM - NOVEMBER (tentatively) 2008 : Mike Parker & Rick (Rusty) Rust (C/3rd/503rd - 1969/1970) & Hiram Diaz (also C/3rd/503rd - 1968/1969), are making a RETURN TRIP to South Viet Nam, and we are extending an "open invitation" to any of our Brothers who may wish to partake in this journey, and accompany us back to see what is certain to be a much more peaceful, saner place now. For 'Group Interest' sake only, we would like to try and keep the Group restricted to those who were also Co. C/3rd Batt. and also within the above mentioned time frames only because of time allotments and travel convenience once back In Country; but this not an "absolute" by any means. More extensive research will begin after Jan. 1st by all and throughout the upcoming year so, many details are yet to be worked out and your help, knowledge, and input will be important to the Group as well. We do know so far that "you will need"; a Passport, have all required inoculations, and airfare will be about $1,200 from our Port of Departure which will be Seattle, Washington. We are hoping to be back before Thanksgiving Day and would like to stay In Country for a minimum of 5 to 7 days, while visiting places like the former LZ English & LZ Uplift for sure, and mixing in whatever else we all may decide on along the way. This is all meant to be a very 'casual, laid back' type trip. Not only to find out what has become of a very different Viet Nam than the one we all were exposed to, but also to be able to finally see and appreciate it for it truly is, and its' beauty in a now quite peaceful setting. Plus, we will all get to take and spend a little time to jog our minds, rekindle some old memories, and maybe dig some into "our past" and find out something extra, or new about ourselves that we never knew before from times gone by. Contact any of us if you may be interested in making; The Journey Back. We all came home alone. Let's go back together.

Hello, I was in 173rd HHC 3/503rd time March 1968 to April 1969 I was an O5b2P and O5C2P I was located in An Khe, Bong Son, Ba Loc, Uplift LZ and then all over the country as a courier of crypto equipment and each months-crypto codes. Do you remember when Ba Loc got hit with gun fire and bad chi/comm grenades ( Most of them did not work ) to blow up important things like generators and our new 6-10 hole outhouse? I am trying to get PTSD certification for the track (APC) Time. I also don’t know the name of the APC’s unit we were trying out a new radio with three of use from the Herd. The only name I can remember is Charles Butler in Bong Son....If you know the name of the APC unit it would really help me. I have agent orange diabetes but cant seem to get disability for every thing else(PTSD Fibromyalgia Sarcoidosis and the worst Kidney stones for the past 30+ years) . I know this is not news to anyone. Thanks “all the way” David Davis davidzod@netscape.com,davidzod@gmail.com,davidzdavis@yahoo.com

To Tommie Dorsey: Saw your message on the website. I was with HHC 3/503rd from May of 68 thru the end of 69. I work for the DAV in Alaska now. I know the frustration of dealing with peoplw who don't know anything about the units and the parts they play in Nam or anywhere else. I'm a history nut and I don't hesitate to educate people about the huge role that the HERD played in Nam.

i don,t know if, sfc gray lewis e. or family of the sfc gray. co. d 3/503 173 abn. is out there. if so i have orders, of a purple heart. april 19th 1969. dated 21 april 1969. i hope he got them before his discharge. and had no problems with v.a. i was also hit that same day, i was first airlifted to bac loc field hospital then i was sent to nan trang field hospital. i know gen. barnes gave me my purple heart, and something else,? one month later, then i was sent to camp drake, hospital in japan. and then letterman hospital in sf. cal. until i could walk again a long 7 months. my family got a letter saying i was slighty wounded. and my orders never followed. after that. they were lost. i know a lot of people say that. but it was true. and nothing was put on my dd214. after 5 years in the army. then i joined the navy. for only 2 years. and that dd214 discharge had nothing about a purple heart. thank god. for the purple hearts records, took my case and found my orders, for my award. i even had a doctor. at v.a. told me that in his records i was not even i viet nam. as far as all my scares, and pins in my stmoch.? he don't how i got them.? now today, they give me the best treatment in the world. so troopers, please give v.a. the whole truth about your actions, and all the informtion you can remeber. and don't give up. get your just care. you dersere it. i will be coming to my first, herd. stand down meeting. i will have the orders of sfc grays orders. with me. best all.thank you [the rigger]

Does anyone else out there have a Vietnam Combat Certificate form the Herd? I received on at the end of my first tour with 3/503. It is dated May 68 to Jan. 69. I don't know why those particular dates are on it. There were a lot more "exciting" events during my second tour but no other certificates.

Hello, "Sky Troopers" In April 1967, two airborne battalions--3-506th, 101st Abn., and 3-503rd, 173rd Abn. were activated and deployed to South Vietnam together aboard the USNS Gen. Weigel. We came together several more times during the Vietnam War, but went our ways never to make contact since. After Jump School, close friends went went either to the 101st or 173rd. We, Currahees of the 3-506th want to find our sister battalion members and invite you all to our 11th Annual Rendezvous in Reno, Nevada this coming July 31 thru August 4 at the Sands Regency Hotel & Casino. Details on our website: www.currahee.org. Please take a moment to visit our website. BTW, we have added many new products to our Currahee Gift Shop/PX for our 173rd brothers, please check this out too. Just click on the "New Gift Shop/PX" link. If anyone is interested, I have a number of photos taken aboard ship, our "hell raising" at Subic Bay in the Philippines, when we assaulted the clubs and "jumped off ship" during our short leave there; and your battalion on the docks at Quin Nhon. Yell, if you want copies. I just placed a post on our main Message Board that reads: "3-506th 40th Anniversary - This year's 11th Annual 3-506th/TF 3-506th Rendezvous in Reno, Nevada, will be to celebrate our "Stand Alone Battalion's" 40th Anniversary Vietnam Odyssey (1967-1972). Tim Beets (HHC 1967/68) has said it correctly. "It is somewhat hard to believe that forty years has passed since that boat load of young paratroopers set off for Viet Nam. The roads we have traveled since and the stories we could tell would fill volumes of books, and I bet would be some pretty interesting reading. So it seemed only right that it be remembered in some way during the '07 Reunion'. It would also be interesting to know how many of the guys from the 3-503, 173rd Bde, who sailed with us and departed at our stop in Quin Non are still around and how they are doing. It is funny how these thoughts come to mind when a certain date rolls around. We are lucky as a group to be able to get together, even if only for a short time once a year, and to have Currahees present that span the entire time the 3rd 506th was in country. It adds alot to the total experience of the Reunion." One of several new items that Jerry is planning to have available for the 40th Anniversary celebration is have a professionally done DVD that combines the excerpts from both the "Stand Alone Battalion" and "My Gift To You" books. It will be another companion project in the history of our proud unit (both 3-506th/TF 3-506th). Don't miss out on this special event. Start planning for Reno '07'. Be there to tell your stories." Come join us, "Sky Troopers"!

Sometimes things jar a memory and i beging to wonder what happend to a soldier I served with back in those days. We were operating for a time out of Camp Radcliff in January of 71. A new soldier came to the unit and I knew him only by the nic name he chose for himself, "HOTDAWG" This trooper had been to the pathfinder school before arriving in nam. We were with 3rd Plt, A co, 3rd Bat. Hotdawg, myself, Sgt Troha and Spc Goldman had been sent to install a five claymore mechanical. Troha and Goldman set thing up and Hotdawg and me was pulling security. Before moving up the trail for my position I stopped to speak briefly with Hotdawg. I was standing front of him and slightly down hill when for one of those reasons that makes ne move at the right time i decided to move myself farther uphill. After taking a few steps i turned in time to see the mechanical device explode. I ran down the hill and stopped and told Hotdawg to go get some help because I saw Troha and Goldman drop in the blast area. Hotdawg painfully informed me that he was hit. I told him to hold tight while I checked on the other two. Arriving wher i saw the others fall, Sgt Troha told me to get a medic because Goldman was hurt. Goldie had received a claymore ball to his gut and Troha was giving first aid. To shorten this story a bit, later on I found myself at our lagger site keeping an eye on Hotdawg while others were tending to Goldie. While I sat with my finger in the hole in Hotdagws leg to stop the bleeding he and I shared a few drinks from the rum he had in one of his canteens. Eventually the Dust Off took the two troopers away. I found out later They both had been sent to Japan for medical treatment. It is my hope that these troopers will read this and get in contact with me.....I would love to know the real name of Hotdawg, and how he and Goldie have faired since that day.......

I would like to email those who were at the Bao Loc base camp in December 1968, and specifically those who were there on the 11th of December, the day Private First Class Herman Francis Rubin, Specialist Fourth Class Ronald Romero Specialist Fourth Class Elijah Miles, First Lieutenant Dennis Lembke Melvin, Sergeant Jake Edward Hurst, Sergeant Eugene Walters, Specialist Fourth Class Donald Keith Vadakin, Sergeant Ralph Edward Roach and First Lieutenant Alexander Jr Pozmann were killed. 10 years ago, while still on active dute, I got in and out of Bragg quite often. At that time there was a classy gym where the Division trained its boxers. It easily outclassed the ranger gym down at Hunter AAF. It was named the "John D. Cleland Fitness Center" for our first batt. commander, and on the wall was a framed picture of Cleland in class A's wearing major general's stars. I understand that now his name has been moved to the Fort Bragg ice rink - kind of a step down in status for a good officer and a tough old guy. I was saddened to read of the death of Wayne S. Barefoot (Platoon Sergeant, 3d Platoon, Co. D) elsewhere on this site. He was a good man and a leader who inspired confidence in us younger men. He rose to the top of his profession, as I read, retiring a command sergeant major. Share your Intel on others from our unit. I believe there's a large but largely silent audience of third batt. guys out there.

Looking for the rest of the 3/503 guys who jumped off the MSTS Weigel with me at Subic Bay. One was SSG Baufman who did a previous tour with first Cav and had a big scar on his head, Another was Steele who passed out cold on the deck when Col Clelend chewed us out afterwards. We were a weapons squad in Charlie Company I think. I was from Canada. We shared the Brig from Subic Bay to Qhin Nhon and then as punishment we had to guard the duffle bags in the ville while everyone else sweated in the hot sun on the dock for the welcoming ceremony.
