Hello I'm looking for anyone who served with my Uncle, Micheal Bowlin, in Vietnam from 1967-1968. I'm pretty sure he was with Charlie Co, 1/503d during Operation Greely, Hill 1338 and at Dak To in '67. Any information, pictures, anything would be greatly appreciated, my mother was 10 when her brother died and no one talked about Mike after he died, I never got to meet the man that gave so much voluntarily. Thank you,

For all First Rock Sky Soldiers, past (WWII, Vietnam, Korea, Iraq) present (Vicenza) and future. To hook up with buddies from the past, join your old unit at: Military.com under buddy finder or units, this is the one of the best places you'll find folks from your past. For family members, the same. You will see who is a member because the person has actually signed up under your specific units. If you don't see your buds there, start up a unit page. It's simple. The unit members will start building up soon after (they can google, and it'll show up there). I will use both of these websites as I continue to get older and want to hook up with old buds from the past. Stay safe, stay vigilant.

Pete Hamilton of Fairborn Ohio, who was a medic in the 173rd in Vietnam died on Thanksgiving. I am not sure which battalion he was in. He is survived by his wife Kay Curie Hamilton. His funeral will be held in the Dayton Ohio area. He worked at the Air Force Hospital at Wright Patterson Air Force Base for many years. He was a good friend to all, especially veterans.

My father served in Vietnam in the Armed Forces Language School. He regrets having gotten rid of his mementos - especially his AFLS patch. I am trying to find one to give him for his 60th birthday, but there is no information about the AFLS out there, not even what they call it now so I could contact the modern version for help. My church, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Glenmoore, Pennsylvania, has "adopted" a platoon in the 1st Battalion through the organization "Adoptaplatoon.org". I've wrote to Captain Payne at the address provided and we've sent on shipment of personal supplies for the platoon. I'd like to connect with the Captain to learn more specifically what this platoon needs. Any ideas on how best to connect or experience with the Adoptaplatoon.org organization would be most appreciated. Our church is going to ship supplies every month, write letters etc. Thanks

I need to find fellow troopers that were with C/1/503 173d Airborne Brigade from March 1965 through August 1966. According to VA I need to acquire statements for the time that we served together. The main timeframe is Operation Hump, 5 November - 9 November. Some of people I remember: Charles Walker, Clarence Barto, Arthur Holmes, Cpt. Tucker, Sp4 Laurence Joel (medic attached to us and received Medal of Honor for action on that day). If anybody reads this and knows of others please pass this on. I apologize for not keeping in contact and am finally facing the reality of what happened that day. Thank you.

I was a Combat Engineer assigned to 1/503 during Operation Hump. I was wounded along with the Chaplin and the 1st Sgt bringing wounded back to Lawrence Joel. Worked a little that night on the LZ. I Walked out the next day with the General. I have not been able to talk about this, until my daughter made me listen to the song “ The 8th of November.” Don’t know if anyone remembers me. I was with the herd on Okinawa and then in country for a year. Both of my Brothers were with the 173 after I was. Jim Harwood and Kenneth Harwood

Benny(Tom)Thompson, good to hear from you after 39 years, we were in the same squad, you carried that 60 with ease, Bubba Hunt lives in Detroit, met up with him a few times in Las Vegas starting in 2002. Bubba is alive and well. You both thought me lots when as an FNG in Dakto November 67'. I got initiated right quick with a fire fight the first day out in the bush, I was 18 and aged real proto. Ha!Ha! Lt Brown led a charmed life and drove us hard but we lived to tell a story or two. I thought of you often and will keep in touch, just wanted to put it here to see if any other brothers are still with us. D.J. Southern California

This is to inform those of you in the 173rd of the death of my brother, Patrick J Searles. He served with the 173rd in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968. He passed away near Pueblo, CO sometime between Aug and Nov, 2006. His remains were found by hikers in a wooded area on Nov 25, 2006. I have had his remains sent to Lincoln, NE where I live. He is having a grave side military service at Wyuka Cemetery on Friday, March 16, 2007. I would very, very much appreciate hearing from those of you who knew Pat.

I am looking for anyone who served with my brother Capt. William L. Phillips who was killed in action in Viet Nam on 1/20/1970. Also, I am interested in hearing from any families who have been contacted concerning a book being written "about the effects of the deaths of these men on their families". I have told the author that I did want to meet with him but that I had reservations about why the book was being written. So far, I have not met with the author. This week, I found out that he has obtained a report concerning my brother's death and stories are being circulated that (fact or error) need not be brought out after 37 years. My brother died with honor. That has been enough for my parents and most of my family. We do not need all the horrible details of war and the destruction of human life portrayed as a way to "honor" his memory. Please contact me, if you served with Bill, or if you have been contacted regarding your family member. Thank you and God Bless! May each of the soldiers who gave their life (voluntarily or through honoring the draft) be forever honored.

To Doc Wilson, It's been a long time! I'm just learning to operate this gadget although my wife is quite good. I will always remember that day in Dak To so long ago and how we thought it would be our last. As I remember Capt. Needum took over the company on the 12th. I read that he stayed in the service and rose to general. Doc "Rock" Woods was senior aidman and refused to go in, although wounded. Lt. Ferro was on R.& R. and survived. I believe it was D co..4th Bat. that saved our butts, of which Cherone, B Med, was a member. I'm glad to hear you've been in touch with "Big Jack" and that he has the good sense to live in a fair climate. I hope to hear more from you and anybody else we shared our youth with. I will contact you on your e-mail as I have more time and get better at using this device. Airborne all the way! Jeff

Abe Hardy (KIA) Nov. 67, John Barnes MOH winner was KIA around Nov. 11th at Dak To, Lt. George Brown was Plt. leader, can't remember the rest, Armando Escareno KIA 11th or died from wounds later, we evac. him that day. Lt. I am searching for some information about a 173rd Sky Soldier who was KIA in Vietnam -- John L Ponting. His widow, Carolyn, lives in Cairo, Illinois and is very supportive of the local VFW post and its activities. She serves on the Cairo City Council and is the Park Commissioner. Her church has adopted our Veteran Memorial Park and keeps it clean. They also sponsor the annual Veteran's Day program there. It's their way of saying thanks to our veterans. Anyway, our VFW post wants to do something for Mrs. Ponting this Veteran's Day. I'm not sure what battalion SFC Ponting was assigned to, but any help in finding out this type of information would be most appreciative. We would like to do a shadow box type of presentation to her for her work for our parks. Thank you.

HI There! I am looking for anyone who served in 173rd Airborne 503rd Company B First Batallion in 1965. My father's best friend, Michael Medley was killed in the ambush on November 8, 1965 in Vietnam. He and Mike's family in Jackson, MI, would love to hear from anyone that might have known him and may have pictures or stories to share. Mike is pictured several times in the 8th of November music video by Big and Rich, along with other brothers who parished along with him on that dreadful day. Please contact me at my email address listed above if you have any information. It would truly mean the world to his family and my father. Thank you so much and God Bless all of you who served then and serve now. Allyson Berthiaume

In May 1965 the 173rd Airborne Brigade, 1st / 503 and 2 / 503 were part of Operation Hardihood with the Australian Forces in Phuc Tuy Province to establish the new Australian Task Force Base at Nui Dat. The websites of 5 Batallion and 6 Batallion (RAR) indicate that there were US arillary and mortars in the vicinity of were the new Australian Base was to be constructed. My question is did you have a FSB established in the area and if so was it by any chance Fire Support Base "Hornbill"? I am an active member in the NYC Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division and becoming a member of the 504 PIR Association. Sgt. Raymond Inslee served with A-Co 3rd Platoon (the Herd) 1/503 Infantry 1970. Sgt. Inslee was killed in action March 29, 1970 in Binh-Dinh Province, Vietnam. It has been over 30 years since he has been gone but it still feels like yesterday the telegram came to the house. I was only 7 when he was killed and do not have many memories of him except that he was my big brother. "LEST WE FORGET ?" - We forgot I'm wondering if I can ask for assistance from fellow 173rd ex-members. After 40 years we've grown weary of ever getting the Australian government to accept their responsibilities - in regards to 6 Australians Missing In Action in Vietnam - and bringing their remains home. We have now formed a group who have used reports, maps, ex-Viet Cong servicemen eye-witness accounts, people who were on the ground at the time (myself, in regards to 2 of the missing - my comrades in the same platoon, and company), and so forth. http://www.austmia.com The two who were in my unit, and myself, were involved in the 173D's OPERATION HUMP, along with 1/503 Bn (2/503 was back at Bien Hoa base) - in Novemebr 1965. I have included a form letter, if someone wants to pass it on to anyone with influence - newspapers, Senators, etc. We have given up on our government's "penny-pinching' ways, in regards to the way they treat their ex-servicemen, and families. Many thanks, in anticipation Colin Rayfield ****************************** Date xx xx 2006 The Honorable Jerry D. Jennings, Director, Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office, 2400 Defense Pentagon, Washington, DC 20301-2400. OR Charles W. Henley, Legislative and General Affairs, Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office, 2400 Defense Pentagon, Washington, DC 20301-2400. OR Enter the address of any other influential person who may be able to help us in this operation. Dear Sir, ACCOUNTING FOR THOSE AUSTRALIAN SERVICE PERSONNEL, who served with 173D Airborne Brigade - KILLED OR MISSING IN ACTION, PRESUMED DEAD, AND WHOSE BODIES WERE NOT RECOVERED DURING THE VIETNAM WAR 1962 TO 1972, OR SUBSEQUENTLY. You will no doubt recall that from 1962 to 1972 Australians and Americans fought together against the communist forces in Vietnam. After the Vietnam War the remains of six Australian servicemen were not recovered. They were: a. Lance Corporal Parker and Private Gillson. b. Private Fisher. c. Flying Officer Herbert and Pilot Officer Carver. d. Lance Corporal Gillespie. I fully appreciate that accounting for United States military personnel is the US government's highest priority and I am aware that the United States makes every effort to recover the remains of foreign nationals who were lost fighting alongside Americans. As you are aware, Australia does not have the same organisations and systems for body recovery operations as does the United States, and nor do they have the requirement for these operations on such a scale. Their investigative resources are very limited, particularly their real-time, in-country intelligence gathering capability. I am writing you to seek your support in recovering four of these Australians who fit into a "special" category, something other than simply "foreign nationals ." In the case of Lance Corporal Parker and Private Gillson, although they were Australian citizens they were members of 1 st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR) which formed the third battalion of your 173D Airborne Brigade. In addition, when they were killed during "Operation Hump" on 8 November 1965 only two battalions of the Brigade were deployed, 1 RAR and 1/503 rd while 2/503 rd remained at Bein Hoa. For the purpose of recovery of missing men as a result of this operation, I see Parker and Gillson as US servicemen, more or less. A similar situation exists in the case of Flying Officer Herbert and Pilot Officer Carver . They were Australians, part of No.2 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force which was part of the 35 th Tactical Fighter Wing, under control of the USAF 7 th Air Force . Further detail regarding the six Australians whose bodies have not been recovered can be found at http://austmia.com . Hence, we see that Parker, Gillson, Herbert and Carver were killed while operating within Australian units that were tasked directly by American formations. In the case of the other two, Fisher and Gillespie, their respective units were subordinate to an Australian formation, 1 st Australian Task Force, which in turn reported to HQ Australian Forces Vietnam. Considering the status of these four men at the time of their deaths (Parker, Gillson, Herbert and Carver), would it be reasonable to accord them a slightly higher priority than that of "other foreign nationals ?" Furthermore would it be possible to offer to the government of Australia, subject to availability, the necessary resources to assist in accounting for these four missing men. Vietnam was not the first or the last time that Australia has demonstrated its kinship with us in the field of military endeavor and we know that the two countries will continue to cooperate to achieve our common goals. Considering this relationship, and the special status of these four men, can the US government see it's way clear to assist the Australians achieve a favorable and honorable outcome regarding this issue, to help us recover the remains of our comrades who were lost while operating with the forces of the United States in Vietnam? http://www.austmia.com

Looking for Sky Soldiers of B/1/503rd, who served in Vietnam (Bien Hoa Base Camp) from January 1966 through January 1967. I am very interested in the men I fought with on Hill 72 during May 1966, where we were hit from all sides by hardcore NVA and Congs. Am trying to reach someone in 173rd Airborne Brigade to notify of a death of a veteran of this group in case he has been attending reunions and anyone would like to know. In the last 5 years, my father, also a Vietnam veteran has begun seeing & talking to the other men that he served with. I have attended 2 of the last 4 reunions with him. It seemed very important to my father that someone contact his old group. His name is George J. Birge, III and has resided in Waco, Texas for as long as I have known him, the last 10 to 15 years. I'm sure his family will take care of all other aspects, but like I said, it seemed very important to my dad, who also worked with him, to get word to ya'll. Obituary has not been printed yet, but if someone responds, I'll more than happily forwar
