I read a very nice article about Company C, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry in today's "Christian Science Monitor." Here's a link to the story on their Web site: http://search.csmonitor.com/search_content/1031/p01s04-wosc.html It gives a real feel to the sacrifices our soldiers in Afghanistan are making, and the dangers they face. I was also happy that they clearly identified the unit. Often reports just write "Charlie Company," as if that means anything.

ABLE COMPANY< FIRST PLATOON: Yea, I heard from them a few days ago. They are moving again I think. They have been busy at their FOBS lately and haven't had much time to write or call home. They are ok, just all want to 'get the hell out of (that) damn place". Poor guys, lets keep sending them our love and support!

Heard from my son today. We talked for about an hour. Chosen Company are all doing well. They are all getting ready for the cold weather. Clint will hopefully get R&R on Dec. 20th so we will see him during the holidays for a few days. He said they are counting down their time there. March cannot come soon enough. All the guys are well and will be going to Kandahar for a month real soon. Hope all is well with everyone. Happy Halloween.

Hi All Just got back from a family gathering for my nephew who just graduated from Ft. Leonardwood. He is going on to FT. Hood in Texas and then to Iraq at some point. It seems as though we will always have family deployed. Like they say no rest for the weary. My nephew wants airborne but was told there are no slots open a shame as I think he would be excellent. He got awards at boot camp for PT and sharpshooter a good soldier. It was good to see him and I wish the best for him. Anyone heard from Chosen co 2/503rd?? HAppy Halloween lets hope the boys have time to enjoy all the candy we sent!!! Michele

Wallsmith was from KS, most family from MO. but, he will be buried in a military cemetery in Michigan, where wife is going to reside. i know this is a 173rd site but i want to thank everyone who has cared about this family as well. i know, military is all family so of course you all care. Tom leaves behind a wife, Brenda, a daughter, Lauren, 13, and a son, Nathan, 11.. he had just been home on r&r and would have been coming home for good in a little over a month.. please pray for this family, you have all helped my family with prayers, just keep it going for all our lost brothers and sisters.

MSG Wallsmith obituary was in our local paper this morning. He was stationed with the 3rd Inf in Iraq. There will be a memorial service at the First Baptsit Church in Hinesville, Georgia on Tuesday evening at 6:00. The paper lists him as being a native of Wichita, KS and most of his family is listed as being from Carthage, MO. It does not have a date or location for the funeral.

it was a typo, Tom is from Missouri.. sorry about that.. Mr.Rogers, Rev.Phelps calls himself a Baptist and works out of a Kansas church. he thinks all the soldiers are being killed because of the militaries don't ask don't tell policy on gays. in his sick mind he thinks all our soldiers are being killed because we let gays in the services.. totally screwed in the head! at the protest outside of our church, they held up signs that said "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "Your soldier is going to hell.".. true God-fearing people there, huh?? John Doles, my husband, fought for these people to be free and able to say what they want and that's how they thank him, say he's going to hell. so, to them and all the media who wanted to put the negative spin on my husband's death, i can only say, "you are all so ill-informed and i hope when you meet your maker, he takes ignorance into consideration and takes mercy on your soul." God bless all our troops!! keep fighting hard 173rd!

I have to agree with Dee on this one. One of the first things my grandson asks about when he calls depending on the season is how the Hawks, Sonics or Mariners are doing. I don't see a couple of scores being posted as much of a problem as people attacking someone for some wrong word. I realize this is your site and we play by your rules and we do appreciate you and all you do to keep us up to date but I see nothing wrong with an occasional score being posted. Just an opinion!

glad you went to SSG Ezernack's service. also glad the jerks got the dates wrong and weren't there to protest. are there any Legion Riders around Michigan? we lost a friend in Iraq this last week. he was my son's boyscout leader when we were at Polk and he had just sent a condolence to my son about John's passing. he and another man were killed by an IED. the reason i'm asking about Michigan is because Tom Wallsmith will be buried there, he has a wife and children and i want them to be shielded from the protesters hate as well as my family was. thanks for all you do.. the world is a better place with the Legion Riders a part of it..

Mr. Bradley - Your time and effort is appreciated but who reads this site? Loved ones? Friends? Do our soldiers ever look at this site? If they do I am sure many are interested in sports. I often see and read people being nasty to each other, some mean, negative comments, and unfortunately so much sadness. I agree mean spirited comments should not be made but if a sports score being posted on this website is the worst thing that happens today we are very blessed.

Today about 20 of us rode to SSG E's Memorial service in Shreveport. It was a beautiful day fall day to say goodbye to one of our brothers. The family definitely appreciates all that everyone has done for them. They were extremely nice people. SSG E was remembered as the hero he was. The despicable Rev. Phelps did not show up. They mistakenly went to Shreveport last weekend and were met with an empty parking lot. Heather, I am glad that the fellow Legion Riders were able to help out at the service for your husband John. I knew him well and remember the day that he came to the company. May both him and SSG E rest in peace.

To Michelle : As far as meats go remember this - it takes 2 -4 weeks for packages to get to them (right now my packages get there in 2 weeks but as the holidays get closer the time will increase) So you don't want to send anything perishable !!! I did send some nice big canned hams to my son in Iraq for Christmas last year. There are some real nice ones thru Hickory Farms. I only send Spam as a joke !!!! Although apparently some of these kids will eat anything !!! I have an aversion to anything in a square can - you know... sardines, smoked oysters, spam... UGH !!!! So I guess my best advice is look at spoilage. Dry ice is wonderful but the post office requires special handling and when it gets turned over to the military - who knows?!? To my Special Sky Soldiers : stay safe, stay strong and remember we love you. Love Mommaski

so glad you are going to help out with Ezernacks service. it was so wonderful to have the legion riders at my husband, SSG John Doles, service. we never saw the hatred they were spewing until that night on the news and the next day in some of the papers. alot of the papers refused to write anything about them but honored my husband and all the legion riders.. thanks to all you patriots!!! one protester even tried to burn an American flag, one of the police officers went over, told him "Sorry sir, our little town of Chelsea has a ban against burning anything inside the city limits." so, he didn't get to desecrate ole' red, white, and blue!! God Bless all those who believe in our men and women in uniform.. never let that belief waver..

Remember when we got thrown out with the Little Guy? Then we had to take him home and put him to bed on the couch...Remember when we gave Click and Clack a ride home? Remember when you rode that bull with your shorts on? And I hope you remember camping when Little Guy cut that huge tree down with his hatchet...and it got hung up on the other trees and they couldn't get it down....

To Army girlfriend: No question is a stupid question! My son is home now I have had several questions in private e-mails about what the process was. I am going to post this hoping it will answer your questions and some others might have. He was in Kandahar for several days until they had a group of guys to send out. He left there and went to Kuwait for about a day and a half I think. Then on to Germany. He was able to call us from there and give us arrival times in the US. He was only there for a few hours then flew to Georgia (about 10 or 12 hours), had a short layover then on to Michigan. It is my understanding that they fly into Georgia, Texas or New York before heading into their home states. Home this helps some of you.

Casey, I understand your frustration. There isn't a week that goes by that I'm not in a heated argument at school about our guys in Afghanistan. Even educated college people don't remember that we have troops there (that is until lately and trust me I've put up a good fight about that too). But I let them be ignorant and continue to be the proud 'lil army girlfriend that I am. So let people be ignorant and if others aren't willing to help make your guy's homecoming special remember that you have a whole website full of people who are happy for you. Enjoy your time with him... Spc Baker I miss you and can't wait to see you again, please continue to be safe for me. And all the rest of the Sky Soldiers fight on and God bless.

Casey, please don't be upset for the banners. your husband is on his way home, are the banners really important? he'll be welcomed by people he loves and who love him, is the banner at the pharmacy that much of a big deal? some of us did not get to see our soldier. your husband is coming home, for as much the behavior of some businesses may be upsetting, please remember he'll soon be there to you. and god bless us all.

Ok I am upset and furious and need to vent to people who understand and care. My husband is on his way home right now for R&R. I went to a few local business's who normally put up a sign Welcome Home then the soldiers name. Well... I went to a local pharmacy and asked them and they were ok with it. Then I forgot to put on there Welcome Home from Afghanistan. Well once I said that, they were hesitant on the phone and said well we will do our best to get it up. Well he will be here tomorrow and it isn't up yet and I do not believe they are going to put it up. Also I went to my local newspaper and they are acting like they don't want to put an article on for me. I have seen alot of articles in the past about soldiers coming home for R&R and there is a story about them and their unit. Well I have never seen one from Afghanistan so I am pissed. I think it is sad these people are like this. I am sorry I am just upset. I feel like cause they do not believe anything is going on over there. I mean the girl on the phone was like "Oh, your husband isn't in Iraq?" Whatever a war is a war. I wanted to smack some sense into her over the phone. I just said forget it it sounds like to big of a problem for you. I mean my husband did his tour in Iraq and if he didn't so what!!!

Sgt. Kevin Field......hey brother! You have to email me Katie's Phone #...I lost it, and I still can't find it. You know I guess I could call your mother or brother...ok you see what a genius I am:) Anyhow, how are you doing? I was going to call you when you were home on R&R, but I know you had a lot to do, so Joel and I thought it best that we should call Katie after you left..so we didn't take away from the family time hun. You know we miss you and think of you everyday. Cesar is always mentioning Autumn's name is his sad little remarks of "I miss my Autumn...why can't I ever see her now?!?!" I miss all of you...I miss my Katie, Autumn and Jacobeaner! Oh yeah I miss you too. I think Joel misses you most, but then again once you've spooned with someone that puts the relationship on a whole other level:) I'm still happy for you two:) hehe! He misses his boyfriend..in fact he judges everyone by your standard...meaning "these pouge civi's are never gonna compare to Kevin, Hope and Dodd" so needless to say he's not really found too many friends to hang out with here. Ok now I am getting sad, so do me a favor and let us know you're alright and I will call your mom or brother for Katies number. We have broadband, so I can call Europe for free from the land line...hope they hooked up your land line back home:) Take care of yourself, and hurry home! Ciao, Wendy

Sgt. Moreno..."Draino"...where are you?!?! I just called your wife, and you best be on your way home! "Nemo" is waiting:) I am really upset with her Dr.'s, after all the suspense is killing me...I MUST know what gender this baby is! My friend Kesia had her son almost a month ago, so we're looking forward to "Nemo" being a girl!! Well, if you happen upon this post in your transit please let Julie know to call JB and I to let us know when you're arriving, so that we may give you a call. Other than that Hope is doing great...he's going hunting this weekend in Montana. Dodd is doing fine too....he has a girlfriend...oh yeah with 4 kids..sooooo I guess we'll see how that goes. I guess she really wanted 5 kids..hehe! I got an email from Sammy the other day, and the lucky bastard is rocking it in the Netherlands! I told him we all hated him for being such a lucky punk! We know what he's REALLY doing over there, and I told him to save some for the rest of us;)As for us, we're just hanging in there...working and such. I have an ISO audit in the morning so I have to get to bed sometime tonight. Oh by the wya...JB and I are hosting an Italian exchange student this 2nd semester. Her name is Paola and she comes from Codogno, so I am excited to finally have a sense of "home" here in Ohiosnow:) I can't wait to see how she does with the weather! HA! Okies...you hurry home for the baby's birth, and we'll be here waiting on ya! Ciao, Wendy

Dear Nancy - I live in Irondale, Alabama. You know the movie " Fried Green Tomatoes"? It is sort of a suburb of Birmingham. A plane huh? uhmmm... my yard is big but I don't think you can land a plane !!! I live REAL close to the airport. No really, email me and I can tell you exactly how to get here. If you are going to just do a flyby - let me know I can give you some landmarks to look for. The Tree has now lost most of it's leaves so I am the only person in the area with what looks like a blue amd gold tree. All my love to my Sky Soldiers out there. You stay safe and strong. Mommaski

To Toni : What is The Hero Tree? the tree is actually a Dogwood tree in my front yard. It is covered with Blue Stars representing those who are serving in a combat zone (mostly those from the 173rd)Each Star has a rank, name and unit on it, these are given to me by parents, wives, fiancées, girlfriends, siblings and buddies. This is their way of saying to the world "You are MY Hero". The tree also has Gold Stars on it (173rd and Alabama only) to represent the Fallen Heroes. These are put up automatically by me to Honor those who have given all. There are special Gold Star up to represent the 173rd's Fallen of Vietnam and a White Star to represent the MIA of the 173rd. The name came from my neighbors who told other people to "Come see The Hero Tree". I know the tree is meant to be here because when Hurricane Katrina came thru it took part of my roof and put a large gas grill into my swimming pool, however, NOT one little, lightweight foam star came off. So here it will remain until our Sky Soldiers come home. Then I will package them up and send them to my contacts to be given to each of the soldiers. Now not all the soldiers will get one - I don't know everybody !!! So, Toni that is what The Hero Tree is. As to where you can go see it - well unless you come to Alabama you can't see it in person. But, on 10/10 on the messages is a picture of the tree (course it looks much different now - Way More Stars !!!) If you have any more questions or you want to add YOUR Hero - drop me a line. Love to all Mommaski

To Mommaski....Sorry its taken me a minute to post back. Ive been super busy trying to get my flight out of Italy and to Florida. Of all places right where the hurricane hit today. No major damage to our homes though. A few but nothing major. Oh and its 508th. I said Bravo thinking automatically you would know 508th. Over here in Italy 503rd companies are called different. Sorry for my assumptions. But if you do see someone say Able, Battle, Chosen. thats 503rd. Alpha, Bravo, Charlie- 508th. Although, theres always a mix up. LOL. Anyway once again thank you for your dedication. And If you need anything (supplies, etc) I'll be happy to check out walmart or craft stores. Once I hit US land that is. Which is this coming weekend. When your soldier is coming home or flying back the process is the same at our airport. You go to the counter for the airline they are using and tell them your loved one is coming in on a certain flight. They check for his name in the computer and they ask for your photo ID. They issue you what looks like a boarding pass and you go through security to the gate. When they are returning to Atlanta you go to the counter with your soldier and either they will ask you if you'd like to accompany then to the gate or you ask if they don't offer.. I don't know if all airlines do it this way but when our son left they had him board in the last boarding group. He was the last person to board. When they arrived back in Atlanta the pilot asked the passengers to remain seated and announced they wanted to allow a returning serviceman to deplane first. I was surprised by the way strangers treated him - just walking up and shaking his hand and thanking him. One woman shook his hand with a $5 bill folded up in her hand and told him to buy himself a beer. It made me feel like he was appreciated and I believe he felt the same way.

Jaymo, when we went to the airport with our son they just ask us if we wanted to go to the gate. All they did was check our ID's and give a piece of paper that looked like a boarding pass. We went through security like all passengers.

My husband left Qalat on a Wednesday and rolled into Seattle's airport on Tuesday. My friend's husband was supposed to leave Afghanistan on the 14th and got into Texas on the 14th. Not much help, huh. They both were in the 503rd but not in the same location over there. It completely depends if they get bumped. My friend's husband didn't get bumped but got moved up on all his flights. My husband kept getting bumped, so? Wish I could help more.

Hey everyone, my husband's leave has been moved again and now he's supposed to come home next month, I was wondering if anyone knows about how long it usually takes them in travel time to actually get home?? He's supposed to leave there on the 13th, anyone know when I should expect him here (Virginia)? If I just had work, this wouldn't be a problem, but I'm in schoool too and I need an estimate so I can adjust a few tests if I need to... so anyone have any idea how long it takes? Thanks!

RED FRIDAYS Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority". We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or over-bearing. We get no liberal media coverage on TV, to reflect our message or our opinions. Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that.. Every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red. By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family. It will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on. The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is...We need your support and your prayers. Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example; and wear something red every Friday. I sent this out to everyone on my email list. Will you? WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE. THEIR BLOOD RUNS RED-WEAR RED! MOST OF ALL - GOD BLESS AMERICA

I just ordered a propane boot dryer from Cabela's to send to my honey. They run on the little Coleman tanks and they guys get those from the Army. You'd also have to purchase the extensions because their boots are taller than the max. size for the dryer. They also sell glove attachments. Cabela's ships to APO addresses so you could have it shipped directly. Also, I shopped around and you can find the dryers from other merchants, the brand is Peet. I just used Cabelas because it is a trusted site... we're prefered customers if you know what I mean :)

Just talked to my son five minutes ago. 3rd platoon, Chosen Few, 2nd/503. Everyone is alright. He is going to get a little more sleep before going on guard duty on the morning (dawn, coldest) watch. Sounded good. He received the coffee maker I sent to him and his is the only one in his barracks and everyone uses it. He is taking two mugs of coffee with him on guard. Sounded upbeat, sounded good. To Mommaski: I would be honorned and proud if you could add my husband's name to your hero tree. SSG Derrion Waddell. He's in Bravo Co. And I just found out his leave dates has been changed (AGAIN). But instead of coming home in Dec. He'll be home in 3 weeks!!!!!! I am so excited, and the "rush" of anticipation and everything else is hitting me already. I just keep thinking, "I have so much to do." But who cares, I just can't wait to hold and never let go. Oh how I wish he was coming home for good. Anyway, I come on this site often and post occasionally. But I just want to let you know that you have been an inspiration to alot of wives, mothers, fathers, girlfriends, friends, ETC. Everything you've said on here has been nothing short of intelligent, honest, and true to our beloved skysoldiers. I hope everything goes perfect for your interview, and I look foward to seeing it. Thanks for all you've done and all that you will do.

Ok all, I just asked my son what we should send. He said the same things I have been sending. Here goes, coffee and filters, tea, hot cocoa, his favorite cereal, snack bars, oatmeal. X-box games, DVD's, magazines, books, Q-tips and baby wipes(they can use both for cleaning their weapons) socks, T-shirts. Check with your soldier and see if they have a coffee pot in their AO. and thermos. I got a coffeemaker from Walmart that has a stainless steel pot and a thermos that has stainless liner that won't break and it floats. Sending an extra coffee pot for just water too. A small microwave after he picks one out. I pretty much send the same things over and over but he said that is what he wants. Check with your soldier and make sure other guys are recieving packages. If not send one to them. My mother and I make about two hundred cookies every two weeks and send them for the whole platoon. Chocolate chip are the favorite of course and no bakes, then oatmeal raisin. That is what the guys have requested from me. I hope this helps give some of you one or two new ideas. Mommaski did you ever get my e-mail about sending you some stars? Mary Jo

Ok let me see if I got this right - We hate the media, we slove and support our Sky Soldiers ? Well we seem to all be on the same page !!! So let's talk about something important - me. Oops !! Sorry that just slipped out Ha Ha Ha!!! How about - all the people that currently have loved ones home on R&R have to ask their loved one "What is the one thing you wish people would send you?" Then we would have some more goodie box ideas. I think I am running out, either that or my brain is dying of old age before I am. It would be fun to get some ideas from the guys themselves besides "Aw nothing, we're good". If they want actual hand written letters, then ok. But the other thing is it would be nice to share R&R with those of you lucky enough to have it now. Stay safe and strong. My thoughts, my prayers and my love are with you all. Mommaski

It is alright. We are all here as a family to support one another. Your point it well taken; but none of us have been pointing guilty fingers at any of the soldiers. It is just a situation that got blow out of proportion. I am sure that the investigation will show that. Until then I am here to support the soldiers and their family. I cannot imagine the thoughts going through their minds. I know I am not the only one that supports the soldiers. Feel free to voice your opinion! We have that right thanks to all the soldiers past and present. I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

As a 173rd Iraq war vet, I am proud of the 173rd. They are out there protecting the welfare of this good for nothing reporter. My uniot in Iraq The Able co. 2/503rd WARLOARDS, had a embedded reporter, and our 1sg, and CO, let him know right away that his men would risk their own lives for the civilian reporter, for him not to do any thing stupid that he would risk his men over some reporter. I feel that the root of all the negitive feedback from the divided states of america, are CNN, FOX, CNBC, MSN, ABC, NBC, CBS and ALL and I mean ALL the embedded and freelance writers that have been allowed by the BS, oops, I mean Bush adminstration to glorify the war on Iraq, and Afghanistan. But know one knew of the back lash it would cause. Except for the mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers and All the Vets of any war know just how real things are in war. I was there in Iraq, I know how things are. You do what yopu need to do just to live another day. I think the whole Genevia Convention Rules of Engagemaent ideas, need to go out the window. Change it to the bibles rules, AN EYE FOR AN EYE!!!! they cut off our loved ones heads we cut off there heads of anyone they are close to I mean any one. But it will never happen. I hope I have not upset any one but I was where the 173rd is at now in a time of war. I just hope theese coward reporters, who air this stuff can sleep at night, and just a little hint to them, I would stay at home next time cause one day theese paratroopers will not help you ou twhen it hits the fan, because you have turned your back on them SSG Shawn Grueser

I apologize if I offended anyone maybe I used the wrong word (bickering) I just know that if it was my son that was involved I would not want anyone talking about it until the Army investigation was over and the truth was out. I have not voiced my opinion or even shared my thoughts about this incident because I am putting myself in those parents shoes. I am a Proud Army Mom and support the whole 173rd as I did through Operation Iraqi Freedom and the past 3 years. I have 2 sons in the Army and will always support what they do, I also have a brother-in-law in Iraq serving for the next 18 months in the Army. So, again if I offended anyone I apologize.

At this point all of this bickering about the incident to me should stop. We were not there and for the sake of our soldiers why doesn't everyone take their energy and go make cookies and send them to the soldiers. They are all asking for hot cocoa, teas, coffee, cup of soups. Anything to get them through the winter that is right around the corner. Sometimes enough is enough and we need to go on and focus on something else. The something elsse is OUR 173rd SOLDIERS!! That is why this board is here. So, off to bake cookies everyone. Patti I am so happy for you! We are enjoying time with my son now. He looks great and is having a wonderful time with his family and friends. I don't know if it is available in your area but a local limo company picked us up from home and took us to the airport in a stretch Hummer. It was decorated with flags and magnets that said "Hero on board" It is called Hummers for Heros and it was all free of charge. They rolled out a red carpet for him before he boarded. He was a little embarrassed but he did get a kick out of it. It also let the whole neighborhood know he was home!!!!

I want you all to know how proud I am to be part of this wonderful family. I am so thankful that we are all so strong for our soldiers and each other and most importantly we are all on the same side of this revolting media ploy. We have all stuck together through these past eight months and will continue to hold strong for the rest of this deployment. I know we have had some trying times, and sometimes we didn't all agree, but that is what a family does; bicker when we are upset or irritated and stick together when others threaten our family. May God bless each one of our very special soldiers and bring them home safe and sound. The ones we have lost will never be forgotten and we will all walk taller knowing they were a part of our family. God bless each one of us and keep us safe.

My sincerest sympathy to the family and friends of PFC Cruz. I know his brothers the Combat Wombats, Alpha Co. 3rd Platoon, miss him very much. This link was given to me by another Red Devil mom: www2.whittierdailynews.com/search/ci_3132979 Wombats you have come a long way and you have started to round the final turn. As you prepare to go down the final stretch stay in the lead and keep your heads down. Make sure when you do cross the finish line, (and it will be here before you know it!), your shoulders are back and chests are out with pride for what you ALL have done. Because EVERYTIME someone back home asks one of us about; our car magnets, our Blue Star Flags, our yellow ribbons, The Hero Tree, or even the 173rd Airborne/St. Michael medal around my neck and the Guardian Angel pin I wear everyday over my heart, you can bet we ALL stand taller when we talk about YOU! Stay FOCUSED, stay TOGETHER, and STAY GOLD!

i love all your postings. no one has shown up on my door to hassle me about John's death in Afghanistan. they interviewed everyone before the children and i returned home. on the day of the service one of the stations showed up at my father-in-laws home to interview him. i thought it was wierd when the rest of the family got to the church and told me he was being interviewed, this is as the funeral director is getting us lined up to walk out.. well, of course, we had to wait on those being interviewed to get to the church.. i thought that was very insensitive of the local news. also, there were strict instructions that no one zoom in on me or my children but of course most of the newspapers and newsstations totally disregarded that request. i never gave permission for them to even be at service, and only one station was given permission by my father-in-law.. so, i have no respect for the media anymore. i only hope this mess with our boys and the bodies being burned gets the right attention it needs and then just goes away. God bless all the 173rd men and women and hope you all get home safely.. Don't let this bit of bad press deter the mission at hand!!!!!

In response to our guys in B.co 1/508th, that are getting all the media attention about burning the taliban bodies....My husband is one of the soldiers involved.... from what he told me, and from what I understand, that reporter completely contorted the situation! Yes, our guys did burn the bodies; but this is after being ambushed, loosing 2 buddies along with 2 ANA soldiers, and than after guarding the bodies for over 24 hours, noone claimed them, and they began to smell.... Granted it wasn't the smartest thing to do while a reporter is filming you, but i guess that just shows that they really didn't think they were doing anything wrong!..... In all the media reports they speak of a psychological operations unit; these guys are not affiliated with ours at all, and from what I understand took full advantage of the situation and used the body burning to threaten and taunt the town....... For all of you who are concerned, please just know that that the media has exaggerated this whole situation and that after speaking with my husband I truly believe that this thing will blow over before u know it... It's just so upsetting that after going through so much, this is how our guys make the news! God Bless the sky Soldiers, and hang in there 173rd families!

So many were disturbed by the footage of the burning bodies. True, it was a shocking image. But just what else were our soldiers supposed to do? If the comrades of the fallen taliban did not retrieve the bodies to be laid to rest according to their own religious traditions, were our sons supposed to perform the last rites about which they know nothing on day old rotting corpses? That too is blasphemous to Islam. And the only other option would be to leave the bodies in the desert subjected to the elements and wild animals...the videographer hit paydirt...no matter what our boys chose to do, it would have been all over the news.

I have a son on the 173rd who also served in the initial deployment in Iraq. I am proud that he is a solider serving his country and in this particular unit, although it seems that he has been in distant lands for quite a bit of the last several years now. The end of their deployment will not only be welcome, but now even seems close. On the matter of the news media, I do not hate them and am happy to hear any news from overseas where our soliders are at war. I am more afraid that people will forget that we are even in a war and what our soldiers are going through. Americans need to know what life is like for all of our troops when they are deployed and what a tough job they have. Today, America has the finest Army we have ever had in our history. I was saddened by the footage of the burnging incident, but people should know that war is not a pretty thing. I have not fought in a war, but have been a police officer for 24 years. At our State Police Academy they have posted two sayings. One is that when you look into the abyss, remember that the abyss is looking back into you. And the other, which I am probably not quoting properly, says that when one hunts monsters, they must take care not to become that which they hunt. We are Americans, not the Taliban. Even in war, we are Americans. And as such, we fight and die by a code of honor. Without this, we are nothing. Victory without humanity and honor would be hollow indeed. I remain pround of our soldiers and am confident that if any problems do exist, they will be properly worked out. When writing messages, I think it is important to remember who we are.

I haven't been to the site for a few days. Just wanted to share something on a little brighter note. My son arrived home on leave Tues. He looks wonderful and is very happy to be here. We spent today in the elementary building I work in and he was welcomed with open arms. He spent time in several classrooms taking to the children and answering questions for them. The kids write letters and send packages to him, one of the classrooms is working on Operation Christmas for his platoon. The children are making stockings for the whole platoon and filling them. Most of these children have been following his deployments. They sent things to him when they were in Iraq and have tracked him on maps as part of their maping skills lessons. Next week some of the teachers from his high school have asked him to come in and talk to their classes. He is very humble about the whole thing. I am very proud! I think it is a wonderful way for these children to know that this is real and what a way to learn history!!!!

Please - fellow family members and friends - let's try to not increase the uproar anymore by speculating, etc. We love our soldiers...let's show them that. Let's focus on that. This is an ongoing investigation which will upset many in a variety of ways. Let's let the military do its' job - and ignore the speculations of the media. Hi everyone, I was wondering if I should really get involved with this, but I have decided that somethings need to be said. I do not care for the media. I got a bad taste for them when Michael died. When we returned to our home on Dec 27th here they were - parked on my front lawn, TV cameras and Newspapers. They kept screaming at me as I ran past them "How do you feel Mrs Yashinski?" "How does it feel to lose your son on Christmas Eve?" My husband (Michael's dad) went outside and told them to get out of here but they replied that the constitution protected the press and they had the right to get the story. My husband replied that his son died to give him those rights and that it also gave hime the right to throw him off our property !!! 2 hours later and the police later they were gone. They became angry again when I wouldn't allow them to film his Memorial. I have given few interviews and only with set guidelines. If they break those agreements - I tell them the interview is over. On Oct 31st a crew from ABC will be here to interview me about The Hero Tree and Michael. The producer has already called about this incedent - I have told her it is a taboo subject as the investigation is NOT complete. They have agreed to this. She also has been warned about my feelings about the media. Folks lets not give them any more power. The ancient egyptions believed by saying a name you gave it power and everlasting life. We have the control - lets give them NO power over us. Whatever happens - it will not change our feelings. These are "our children", we love them, we respect them and we are Proud of them. They are our Heroes !!! When I put their names on that Hero Tree I am telling the world - here are true Heroes !!! Love to all. Mommaski

My son met and has been talking to a member of the Afghani police. This man is learning English and he wrote a letter. He asked my son to have me post it somewhere in the US. That is what I would like to do: In the name of God Dear Sir, I would like to tell you about the Afghani National Police and what is happening in Afghanistan. The ANP is here to establish the peace and security of our country. We want to eliminate the terrorists and the remaining Taliban. We do not want to create and motivate the terrorists or harass the innocent. I wish we didn't have to ask for America's help, but we still need it to rid our great country of cruelty and injustice. Establishing the peace and security has a heavy price. Thank you for helping us pay it. If we look to our past, we will see the heavy loads on our people and that we don't want to bother you very much. It is clear that we need your aid to bring and establish the peace and security. Also to help us build hospitals, schools, roads, electricity, and running water. Everything you do is a great help to my people and is good for Afghanistan. It is a good chance for us. Thank you, Barat Ali

I think it is wonderful that you both are willing to express your opinions. It is very sad that there are no rules for the media. I am so thankful that our soldier have not gotten more media attention. I wish they would keep the media as far from the war zone as possible.

This whole thing just makes me sick to my stomach. How can this reporter do this? I think he is a very desperate man just wanting attention. Why should we care anyways. We are trying to help the Afghan people when they dont want help. I mean c'mon people these our people who burn their own children for punishment. They also drug them as well. They dont even care about their children so why should they care that two people were killed cause they were trying to kill our soldiers. So they had to get rid of the bodies so they burned them. I hope this whole thing just blows over but I feel it wont. I am with you Sky Soldiers, All The Way!!! This is all going to get very political.

Your feelings are my feelings. I'm with you. It is horrible that our world is to this point and that we are the ONLY country not supporting our own. There needs to be a stopping point on where the media's rights begin and end. Get the media out of there and let our guys do whatever is necessary to end this and come home!

I posted the message No Sympathy for Taliban…I generally try to keep my opinions to myself, but I guess you could say this issue really struck a nerve. It’s too bad that there is footage of the Taliban bodies being burned…I wish whoever or whatever soldiers were involved; would have taken the camera away and burned the film too…As far as I’m concerned, it is two less Taliban members that the 173rd or any military unit has to worry about...In my opinion the two Taliban members who were burned and then put on television for the world to see… is nothing compared to the footage that was on television worldwide of our own American people dying because of their so called leader. Do you think when they watched our people dye and burn at their hands they had any remorse? Hell no they didn’t… I'll keep the rest of my opinions to myself...Stay Safe 173rd...America Loves You!

Here is my response to the October 1 incident. http://www.snopes.com/rumors/pershing.htm If it is true that General Pershing did the above, he is my hero. I really don't see a problem. The soldiers needed take care of the two bodies within 24hrs as per Islamic law. At the same time psyops took advantage of a good opportunity. There should be a golden rule of never giving a reporter the time of day. They are long on opinion and short on knowledge (quoting Jack Kelly).

Who wrote No Sympathy For Taliban? Big High Five to you. Everyone has there own opinions about this. Yours just happens to be exactly like mine. I shared your message with some family members that I have over tonight. They said, Hell Yeah! God Bless the 173rd. You Guys Are the Best.

Would it not be best to hold our opinions as to what happened and how we feel about it? Someones son, father, husband, boyfriend is involved and would it not be best to hold back until the investigation is over. Think of someones feelings down the line. We should support them as we can on down the line. Stan Rogers

i have seen all the footage on tv about the bodies being burned. this supposedly happened the day after my husband, SSG Doles, was killed over there. i don't know if it is the men who had a hand in taking my husbands life, but more power to the men who burned them.. i am upset that they let themselves be taped doing such a thing, but it is no where near as horrendous as the things the taliban has done to our military and to it's own native people over the years.. i hope it wasn't any of the sky soldiers who did this deed but if it was, hope you all get a medal, not a court-martial..

I think you make a very vaild point. There are all kinds of things that happen in time of war; how do you tell right from wrong? Who can judge what has been done? What makes peopel do the things they have done? Most of importantly why the heck would a soldier do it infront of a camera to be broadcast to the world? There are so many unanswered question I have about what has been done. We all have our own opinions about what has been done. I don't critize what the soldiers did, but I do disagree with how they did it. I too believe that all kind of things happen in wartime; there is a time and place for everything, but it is never in front of cameras. I pray that it doesn't make life harder for the rest of the soldiers and that this doesn't start an uprising amongst the locals. God Bless you all.

From today's letter to my son in Afghanistan---There's an issue that may cause some hassles for you since it’s all over the news about some guys from 173rd that were filmed desecrating dead Taliban in violation of Muslim religious beliefs. I saw the video and they burned up a couple of bodies that were killed the night before. It was a pretty dumb thing to do with the news cameras rolling. A lot of 173rd people are blaming the news media and even the Taliban for the bad image this is giving America around the world. I spent a year in a combat zone, I know all kinds of things that happen that you just don’t tell. But who was stupid enough to do this in front of a reporter? You do what you gotta do while you’re out there but you don’t do it for the cameras! I hope they don’t come up with a bunch of bullshit regulations that make your job harder and more dangerous. The guys that did this ought to have their asses kicked for making everyone look bad and increasing the dangers you all face daily. Love Dad

Me and my friend were just discussing everything that you stated, you took the words out of our mouths. I have no sympathy for the cowardly talabin either. I only wish that there were no media present. It seems that our soldiers never hear the media sing praises of the great things they do, but they are always around to critize things that they shouldn't do in the opinon of some. No one should critize or judge our soldiers untill they walk a year in their shoes. God bless all the 173rd and I will keep praying for you all. Stay stong, stick together, and come home safe.
