To Army Mom - I would be honored to add your son's name to the tree. Hopefully on the 9th my husband can email a picture to Mr Bradley. He will get back from his mom's funeral on the 7th and our precious son's birthday is on the 8th (he would have been 26) So that day will be a little rough but I will try and get him to do it on the 9th. Give that young man a hug from me and tell him I am very proud of him. And just to let everyone know I think I have more of the 508th than I do of anyone !!! And that includes "my children" of FSB !!! My love and prayers to all of you. Love Mommaski

To keep from having multiple postings of the same message over & over, do not refresh your browser once you are back on the Message page (after posting). I'm not sure if there is an easier trick, but I completely exit from the site & reenter so I can refresh to see the new postings to read. I keep this site at the top of my favorites list, so I can get back to it quickly. Oh, and about the cell phone question, I think it is up to the individual company as to whether or not you can have certain web accesses from the cell. I know that I can access Yahoo through my Sprint PCS phone.

I think its great that we live in a society that lets us have different views and voice them. However I feel this site is dedicated to the skysoldiers and their families for information and guidance and not to argue but thats just me. I suggest that those of us who can just take what we like from this site and leave the rest and eventually the rest will leave.

This will probably stir up the "patriotic civilian" but like it has been said I can have an opinion also. I do not think Cindy Sheehan or anyone like her is worthy of being discussed on this website that is dedicated to the men and women that are putting their lives on the line day after day. There are things going around in my head right now that I would like to say but it would stir up to much trouble. I was in VietNam and I know what it felt like to see Jane Fonda sitting on that flak gun. Mrs. Sheehan needs to get over her anger and just honor her son as I honor mine. Nothing more to say so do not email me or answer me about this. Stan Rogers

My husband got to the air force base in Afghanistan on a Tuesday and didn't leave there to go to Kuwait until that Saturday and then arrived in Florida on that Monday. Hope that helps.

Of course, the army always likes to change things, so when that happens then I will believe it.

The computer/instant messenger is my only way of communicating with my husband right now. We use yahoo messenger. I also have it connected to my cell phone, that way if I am in bed sleeping and my husband is on, it will wake me up and I can get to the computer to talk and see in him (with the web camera). If you are talking with you soldier via the internet, I strongly recommend buying a nice webcamera for you and your soldier-that way you can always see them!

If some of your soldiers have some free time and can use the internet, I encourage you tell them to download MSN messenger on the computer and also you will have to on your computer and you can chat with them online if there on, also if you have a cell phone, add your phone # on the msn options so if you are not online and away somewhere, your solider can text you on your phone and chat with him that way. Call your cell phone company and see if they would add text messaging to your phone, also see if they would waive the charges because it would be to stay in touch with your soldier, and see what they can do for you! It helps me out alot when he sends me a text message just to know he is doing fine!! Good luck sky soldiers!!

As to the Scholarship fund here is what you do - Make out the check to : Society of the 173d Abn Bde (sep) Make a notation in whose name you are making the donation (anaomous, your loved one or a fallen hero, or "Just Because") then mail it to : Society of the 173d Airborne Brigade (sep) PO Box 42331 Fayetteville, NC 28309-2331 This scholarship is for those that have served or is serving in the 173rd and their families. I felt this was a wonderful way to continue to honor Michael and to support his "Brothers" that meant so much to him. Flowers fade and die but the gift of education is a living legacy. Maybe some 10 years down the road a young person will get a college degree and will say - "Because of SGT Ski I will be a doctor or teacher" What better Memorial is that? Love to all. To ~*~ -- my last word about Ms. Sheehan -- she DID meet with the President and in her own words he was very gracious and caring about her son's death and sacrifice. Now, she wants to meet again because with her new found celebrity and media attention she wants to embarrass him publicly. Mommaski has said previously and the news has reported repeatedly that her son was not stopped-lossed to Iraq, he reenlisted specifically to go to Iraq with his unit. His choice, not her's. She laughs when she gets arrested in Washington because this is all a game to her - get on the front page, get on the evening news, continue her 15 minutes of fame. She even gets mad when the media ignores her to cover the hurricane victims!! For what - who knows. Let's move on to something else - I turn the channel when she comes on the news and I will scroll past any posting here that mentions her name again.

Oh dear, I was afraid of this. When I saw Cindy Sheehan's name mentioned, I prayed that no one would give her the time of day... but I guess it was not to be. Let me tell you about Cindy - her son re-enlisted to specifically go to Iraq, why? Because he told his father it was the right thing to do. Cindy and her husband and her other child met with the President, according to her husband he said he was very gracious and very sympathetic. Now, she wants to meet with the President so she can tell him that she hates him and personally blames him for her son's death. There are several stages of grief - denial, bargaining, anger and acceptance. Sometimes we get stuck in one of these stages and then we need professional help. I believe Cindy got to the anger stage and she couldn't blame her son for his decision - it would make her a bad mother, so she blamed an unobtainable person - The President of the United States. She knows in her mind that as long as she is angry he will not be allowed to meet with her so she keeps the anger alive and therefore keeps her son alive. My son. also died in Iraq. Her grief is no greater than mine or any other mother who has gone thru this loss. She does not speak for me and I have wrote the President begging him to stay the course, to not let my son's death be for nothing. The Iraqis and Afghanis are a people who want and deserve freedom. Our Nation has always answered the call for help and when attacked - the "sleeping giant has awoken". I pray each night for our Service People - past and present. My son is gone and I can never have him back, but, I can make sure that his memory is kept alive and he is honored for the choices HE made. On October 8th my son would have been 26 years old - I honor him by supporting the 173rd and donating to their Scholarship fund. Please let us give no more space to Cindy Sheehan, pray for her that God will grant her peace, but let's keep this space nonpolitical as we can. Let us deal with what is important - our Sky Soldiers and their families !!! My love to all of you. Mommaski

I am a Mom and I pray that I never know the pain that our fallen soldier's families feel. I also pray that I would have the strength to honor my son in the manner that he would expect me to under any circumstance. My son often ends our calls by saying - Mom, you must always know that I am doing exactly what I chose to do and I am honored to serve with my fellow soldiers. He truly loves the boys he serves with and I know he would lay down his life for any one of them.

2nd, as to you question, No I was not drafted! I enlisted and served 23 years; http://www.bradleyboys.com/milhx.htm

3rd, this web site is not about Sheehan and her political aspirations

4th, Don't get me started on death and dying. I held men as they died, looked into the eyes of grieving mothers that have lost a son. So much pain, so many lives lost. lets not go there.

what started all of this, because I did not agree with you? Is this what we have come to? you must need something better to do. My son is fighting, breathing death, moving dead bodies, trying to get himself and all his team out in one piece over there, seeing a nation without anything (he says we have no idea) and whatever else his job may be today. I AM VERY PROUD OF HIM. HE IS AN AMERICAN SOLDIER!! he joined after this all started, he did not join because he thought it was going to be an easy living, and he was not drafted, were you Mr. Bradley? lets ALL try and be understanding. everyone gets on here and talks about prayer and God, let's put it to use.

I am sorry Mr. Bradley, she is NOT a Jane Fonda. She is a mother who would like to talk to her sons Commander and Chief. there is nothing wrong w/ that. all he has to do is go our his front door. she has not made it hard at all. it is not about anti war, pro war. him not talking to her and the press has made it blown up into all of this. my son is not fighting for apple pie, I agree he is fighting for the soldier next to him, HE has told me this himself. they are a family and I am thankful for that. It makes them all safer. I agree w/ the one who said that we all grieve in different ways. where is the love in our hearts that we have for the Afghan people? is there not enough to share w/ a hurting mother? FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!

Mr. Bradley, you are such a wise man. And having been there in their shoes who could say it better. I applaud you also for standing up to show your disgust with Sheehan. Exactly my sentiments. Thank you for expressing your feelings on the matter. I just know that my son would never want me to take the political path that she has decided to take. Sure she can express her views---those are her freedoms. But for her to think that she is the spokesperson for anyone else is her sad mistake. She has and did cross the line. Again, thanks. What a more dutiful job you perform for your fellow soldiers. This site is my lifeline. Even when you have to get on to us ever once in a while. :) Kathy

I am not supporting nor am I condemning Mrs. Sheehan. I come from a background in mortuary science/funeral directing and I know that when a loved one dies, especially a loved one who was not supposed to die before you, a person can do strange things. It is not what we might do, but everyone deals with grief in their own way. It's an extremely personal thing. People may react in a way that we would never understand. That is the nature of grief. When a person dies, why do some people cease to eat? Why do they overeat? Why do some cry? Why do some hold it in? Why do some protest? Why do some hold memorials? Some of you have experienced more grief than I can even imagine and I judge no one.

In tribute to SSGT Michael Schafer and his fallen comrades, and especially for all his buddies still over there - SKY SOLDIERS ROCK!! The Average American Fighting Man (unknown) The average age of the military man is 19 years. He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father's; but he has never collected unemployment either. He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away. He listens to rock and roll or hip-hop or rap or jazz or swing and 155mm Howitzers. He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk. He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in the dark. He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must. He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional. He can march until he is told to stop or stop until he is told to march. He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity. He is self-sufficient. He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry. He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts. If you're thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food. He'll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low. He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands. He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job. He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay and still find ironic humor in it all. He has seen more suffering and death then he should have in his short lifetime. He has stood atop mountains of dead bodies, and helped to create them. He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed. He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to 'square-away' those around him who haven't bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful. Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years. He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding. Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood. GOD BLESS ALL OF OUR TROOPS!! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

I send the drink mixes that are made by Nestea & Crystal Lite for bottled water. Also, M&M's have been the only chocolate to make it over there melt. I send these air sealed packages of tuna & salmon (not cans, but you can send those too), various crackers or Pringles, snack cakes, candy (lots of Halloween candy to buy right now), magazines, local newspapers help pad the box, chapstick, Visine......those are the main things I send. Maybe that helps you?......................**To sad wife - hang in there, we're all here for you.

Pro-War, Anti-War ...what stupid words. Any soldier that ever fought a war will tell you he/she is Anti-War. War is hell is not an understatement, its a truth. When a human faces his mortality he/she changes. Soldiers do not fight Wars for policies, freedom or the commander and chief. They do it because is the job the signed onto do. They took and oath to obey. When the bullets fly and fear filled the heart it is not Mom, apple pie or the American flag soldiers think about. It about each other, the duty to each other. A commitment that know they will go to hell and back to save each other as they know that their Brothers would do the same for them. It is not politics, its not pro war or anti war its about people, duty and honor. Deep words but the truth. This Sheehan women's son died for his Brothers and she is a fool not to see the sacrifice he made. She crossed the line of a grieving mother, to become a political activist. She put her personal politics above the duty, honor and sacrifice of her son. Just what we needed ...another Jane Fonda.

Hi "armygirlfiend"... I'm right along side as one of them as well!!! My soldier is also not one to ask for many things at all. So it's hard to figure out what to send. I've been sending him chef-boy-ardee spaghetti and meat balls in the little cans and I did send him muscle milk. I'm a personal trainer and where as I don't suggest people use shakes, in his situation, and all those guy's situations, it's a great product. It runs about 30 bucks or so and he likes the chocolate milk flavor. He likes powdered doughnuts, cookie, Pringles, and just any snack to keep their taste buds happy!! Hang in there girl!!! Let me know if I can help you in any other way!

Oh dear. Let me explain myself. I am behind my soldier 100%. I am behind the cause and the reason they are there!!!!!! I do not "like" war. Unfortunately that is the way terrorists have to be dealt with. I am for the Afghan people to help them with their freedoms. When my son joined the army he fully knew what he was joining for. He knew what was ahead of him. He knew. And after I read Kite Runner I was ready to join the grandma brigade and go to Afghanistan myself and help the cause. By the way if you have not read that book it is a wonderful read. But be prepared because you too will want join the cause. Read it. It will change the way you feel about the war, what our soldiers are doing, and the Aghani people. Our soldiers are there for a reason. It is NOT a lost cause. God Bless Our Soldiers. Kathy

Muscle milk? food? snacks? clothes? drink mixes? what kind of mixes should i send and where should I purchase these? I'm a bit lost. Thank you!!!

My biggest concern and need to post a message was validated when i read the comment that you can support your soldier 100% and not agree or support the war. I am not accusing or condescending anyone but who can not possibly support our cause for being in this war. I think every American, Italian, German, Australian, (etc). would agree and do agree with our heart being broke apart when our brothers and sisters were killed on 9/11. Not only is our country doing the right thing but we are also liberating a country to be free. Afghanistan does not have the luxuries that America has, but has come along way and will continue to do so as long as we have these wonderful men and women to VOLUNTEER to serve their country. As far as mrs Sheehan wanting to meet the commander in chief in regards to her sons death. Why? There is no one in America we should be blaming but the terrist that seek danger on brothers and sisters. As I sit here in my house tonight I am once again reminded of the sacrifices my husband, your husbands, your sons, and brothers make minute by minute. Thank you for everyone that has support to give. and thank you sky soldiers I sleep PEACEFULLY at night because of you ...........................................................................

Mrs. Sheehan is entitled to her opinion. She crosses the line when she misrepresents me with her cause. But she has every right to express her "personal" opinion. IF this had been a draft army then I probably could see her anger. This is a voluntary military. All I know is that I am 100% behind my soldier. He knows why he is there and I support that. Kathy

Let us not be quick to judge Mrs. Sheehan. she is doing what she feels in her heart is right. We can be behind our soldiers 100% and not have to agree with the war. I am! Isn't that what her son stands for, FREEDOM? did he not only fight for freedom in OTHER countries, but also OURS! we need to search our hearts and let OUR GOD BE THE JUDGE. I believe what you said is very cruel and hurtful to her. All she wants to do is speak with HIS Commander and Chief, is that such a sin? I think that her son would be very proud of his mother. She is doing it all in love *and with a pain that I pray every day that I never have to deal with..* The Lord has felt her pain though, God wants peace, let us search our hearts if we claim HIM as our SAVIOR. we are all in this together and should support each other, we do not have to agree, the world would be very boring. May God Bless You and bring us together as a Nation.

I signed my husband up for it back in August when I first heard about it from the news and the first week of September, I already received my husbands card in the mail for the cruise. It doesn't state how many days it is for, or even if it is just a day cruise. More then likely, I would think it is only a day cruise since Grand Bahamas isn't too far off the coast from Florida. We will definitely be going though. It is nice to see that Discovery Cruise lines are supporting our troops.

Don't you know that Mrs. Sheehan's son would be so embarrassed if he were to see what a disgrace she has brought to herself. She doesn't disgrace him because he is the ultimate hero and no matter what could you disgrace that. I just want to commend you, Deb, for being a shining star to all of us. You can hear the proud mother in everything that you write. If only Cindy Sheehan could put her efforts to the good that you are doing she would be a prouder mother of her son!!!! To the sad wife: My heartfelt prayers are going out to you right now. I know it is tough being an army wife, but as my husband says "You knew it would be a rough road when you said I do". And that is so true. Our soldiers have seen so much while they have been over there. Often they have no one else to be able to confide in then their families back here waiting for them. I know our husbands say and do things often that are hurtful, but we love them no matter what. For better or worse right? If anything, we should show them our love even more right now because they need it now more then ever. My husband often tells me that knowing I love him is what keeps him going every day and keeping him sane. It is also sad to me to hear about these soldiers who worry every night if there wife will be there for them when they get home. They shouldn't have to even have that cross their minds. Where is the commitment in marriages today? Yes, our husbands do change and they do not come back the same man as they were when they left, but if anything we love them even more for the sacrifices they make for our families and for every fellow American. Keep your chin up sad wife. Be there for your husband no matter what!! This is the time when he needs to depend on you now more then ever. I agree with the others who have said "when he says something hurtful, just tell him you love him". That's all we as wives can do right now. Support our husbands, tell them we are proud of them, and love them unconditionally!!

To Sad Wife - Oh honey of course it is sad, whether you want to leave your husband in war or peace. But sometimes during war pressure becomes so much and their feelings become so mixed up that they have no one "safe" to vent to except the one person they think is the one person who will stick by them no matter what. You have to remember, they have seen some of their buddies fall and they are scared, they fear that you might see the changes in them and not love them anymore so they try to drive a wedge between you now. It is a defense mechanism !! And in no way represents their true feelings probably. There is a beautiful song out by John Conlee called "They Also Serve". It is about the families left behind and while they don't wear a uniform or carry a gun they also serve. They are in the war. And you are!! This is what being a military family is all about - there are no medals for wives that stay strong and keep the home fires burning so that her husband can concentrate on the mission, stay safe and come home. There are no medals that are given to parents that not only come to worry about their own child but every child in the unit. There are no medals for the vets that give unselfishly of their time and experience to keep the families from falling apart. There is no "job well done" or "going above and beyond the call of duty" for families. We do this because it is expected and is part of our "job". The Marine Corp used to have a saying "If we had wanted you to have a wife, we would have issued you one (and she would have green baggy skin -ha ha)" Which from my experience (a Marine daughter, a Marine wife and an Army mom) has taught me we have the tougher job emotionally, we have to dig down deep and gather that strength for our men. Honey, if he says something mean to you - just tell him you love him and can't wait to see his beautiful face again.... then email me and you can vent all you want!!!! I will listen to you and dry your tears. And that goes for any of you who feel that you are in the same canoe!!! As they are a united fighting force, so to are we by being there for each other. Together, we are a strong invincible force. My love to all of you. Mommaski

I talked and "listened" to him for a long time just letting him know that I was there. Not that I can totally understand what he is going through but that I am there when he needs me. He called me back this week and things are better. Things are tough on these guys. My son was just 19 when he went to Iraq and now he is in Afghanistan--that is alot to adjust to. They are facing death everyday and sometimes --if there could be--things worse than that. Email me if you need to talk. Hold on to your loved one.

Dear Sad Wife: Is it sad? Yes. Does it happen? Yes. I, too, am a wife, but am blessed with a husband who takes care with what he does and does not say. However, before you think of leaving, think of the man you married. Realize that he is in there and think of the woman that married him. She is inside you, too. The woman that married your husband probably said she would stay with him for better or for worse and would be able to love and handle whatever came her way. She probably could not fathom her husband treating her poorly, etc. Now, ask yourself what that woman would do. Just my 2 cents.

At Christmas I made and sent black walnut fudge, and I told Eric to let everyone know it had black walnuts. In case they had never tried black walnuts. Well they tried It and loved it. Home made treats are special. Eric said they kept coming back to his room looking for more. I sent another batch.

He calls a base in the US then they transfer him to my number (at least that's the way I think it works!!). He used to have to use a calling card though. I hope that helps!

Five dead in crash of U-S chopper in Afghanistan Last Update: 9/25/2005 6:38:47 AM KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - The U-S military says five crew members were killed today when their Chinook helicopter crashed in southern Afghanistan. The cause is still being investigating but a military spokesman says it doesn't appear to have been shot down. A spokesman for the governor of Zabul province, where the crash occurred, says there was no fighting in the area at the time of the crash. He says he was told the chopper crashed while returning to a U-S base after dropping off troops for a raid on a suspected militant target. There have been at least two other fatal crashes of Chinook helicopters this year in Afghanistan. One was shot down.

As for the 101st Airborne having a web page like this. I can honestly say that NO ARMY UNIT DOES! the webpage http://www.screamingeagle.org/ is the web site for the 101st Airborne Association just as http://www.skysoldier.org is about the 173d Airborne Brigade. These web sites are about their Associations, they are helpful and should be visited but they focus on their association. www.173dAirborne.com  is about the Troops; past, present and future. It is everything Sky Soldier. A one stop shop on the HERD. A labor of love from me to all my sky soldier brothers (& sisters) -- Enjoy!

I love Hollywood, Last night I watched the new TV program called the "E-Ring" all about the action in the pentagon. Personally I give the whole program a "C+" rating as it portrays what Hollywood THINKS the pentagon is like. The only saving grace is that the Colonel in charge of the section, an old vet, is wearing a 173d Airborne patch on his Right shoulder (Combat patch).

Hello everyone. I would just like to report the news that my boyfriend was home on leave recently. He arrived on September 1st at about 5:30PM. They even let us go to the gate to meet him! (I was his "cousin" of course!) We had to bring him back to the airport last Saturday (17th) in the early early morning. We had a wonderful time while he was here, but now I must go back to "reality," since I took the whole time off of work and school to be with him. I haven't posted on here until now because I have been pretty upset and sad about having to send him back. I know that I am very lucky that he was even able to come home, so I shouldn't be sad. I am working on it! I was very proud of myself because I barely cried when I was saying goodbye to him at the airport. I didn't want to cry in front of him because I knew that would make it harder on him. I did pretty good until he walked away, then I lost it, but that was ok because he didn't see it. I am pretty new to this system of having them home for a few weeks, then having to send them back, but this time I think I have finally started to realize that there is nothing that I can do about it so I just have to learn to deal with it and be tough...for him and for me and enjoy the little time we have together. I think it will get better once I hear from him again to know that he made it back ok. Anyone know about how long it usually takes them to contact you again once they leave to go back? Well, that's all for now...hope things are going well for everyone!

I echo everyone's sentiments and requests for prayers as we approach this monument us weekend in Afghanistan. My request, however, is a little selfish--not only is Sunday, September 18 the election, but it is also my son's 25th birthday! It's hard to realize that the last birthday our family celebrated with him was his 18th! My heart is bursting with pride as I think of the man he has become in the past seven years! TO SGT WILSON: Happy Birthday to you my precious son and may God grant us the pleasure of celebrating with you next year. Please know how much you are loved & missed! In the meantime, PLEASE BE SAFE AND WATCH OUT FOR EACH OTHER--NOT TOO MUCH LONGER!

I spoke with my son this morning (what a surprise!!). He said they had a CNN reporter with them and to watch for them on CNN. I turned CNN on while home on my lunch hour and luckily caught the end of Ryan Chilcote's report with video on our guys. Try to watch it...some of you may be fortunate to see your soldier there. Patrick is with 2-503 HHC/Scouts. Ryan didn't specify who he was with...only said the 2-503.

Yesterday I received the BIGGEST surprise of my life! I had been home for an hour or so from vacation and was talking to my daughter. I needed to run an errand but she told me to wait because my daughter-in-law had called earlier and said my son was going to try and call home. A little while later we heard the front door open and I walked around the corner to find out who the intruder was. It was MY SON!! Since the start of their deployment I was told he had decided he was not going to take an R&R. He had planned to surprise us from the very beginning. I have never hugged anyone so tightly in my life! That of course will only hold true until the day he has to return. As my daughter-in-law said over dinner, it was so nice to all be together again. It was only by accident that I saw it air but I noticed that no one posted a message about the piece that The Early Show did on Monday the 12th. One of their reporters was recently in Afghanistan and went to the FOBs of Salerno and Orgun-E. In Salerno there was the 82nd but at Orgun-E they said the troops were small in number because most of the were out on missions. Here is the site: www.cbsnews.com/sections/earlyshow/main500202.shtml  Go to the far right and under Early Show Video click on "Diary from Afghanistan". I hope at least some of you get to see a loved one. For my son's brothers: Stay ALERT, stay TOGETHER, and STAY SAFE!

My prayers go out to all the sky soldiers in Afghanistan during these last few important days of elections. To the army mom who's son is hurt in Germany; my husband is very close friends to your son and we are both praying for him and for your family. On a different note: Does anyone know the army's rules on asthma. I've heard that once you get asthma, then you are given the medical chapter because they do not want you in -can anyone tell me if this is true, because my husband was diagnosed with asthma while he was home on his R&R. God Bless

The easiest and quickest source for passport information is www.state.gov - the State Department website. You can click on passport information on the left and you can locate "places to apply in the US". Just go there and search by zip code and it will list all the locations near your home and whether they have photo facilities on site, etc. I did it all a small local post office that also took my photo (saved lots of time) and finished the application. You can even print out the application on site so you can fill it out before you go. They have expedited service that costs extra, but it can be done. Best of luck --

Spc. Nathan got on the plane Tuesday morning to head back to Afghanistan. I cried when he arrived and I cried when he left. We sure did have fun while he was home. Nathan did say that he thought of his buddies the whole time he was home, and wished that they were together. What a bond. I see that I missed alot on this site, time to play catch-up. Arlene

For those asking about R&R travel, our son thankfully arrived home today. It took him nine days from his FOB until he set foot in the airport in San Diego. The majority of the time was spent getting from the FOB to Kuwait, with the last three days going from Kuwait to Germany and ultimately here. We feel truly blessed to have him home, as we haven't seen him since he left for Italy in May of 2004. He speaks very highly of the soldiers within the 173rd - all of your sons, husbands, brothers and friends. It is very comforting to know that as a group they have a very high level of respect for and companionship with each other. As regards the travel time from Kuwait, three days seems to be the norm. Our son-in-law came home from Iraq in June for his R&R and that is what he experienced. The wait does seem eternally long when you know they are heading home, but hang in there and know that they will arrive soon. The comical thing is that you spend the next two weeks trying to make every moment count and praying that time will go slowly! Thank you all for sharing your loved ones with our son. We will continue to pray for all of you and our Army soldiers everywhere. God Bless, Monica Ward

My neice's father sent this link to her. Little did we know that one of our son's photos was included in the slideshow. You can't beat anything narrated by the "the Duke" Mr. John Wayne. Thanks for all that you do, Mr. Bradley. It has been some time since I've posted a message on this sight. My heart breaks every time I see the news of another soldier giving his life and the sorrow that his family must bear. I can only hope that they know how much we think of them daily. GOD BLESS THEM ALL!!! http://patriotfiles.org/AnAmericanBoyGrowsUp.htm

I applied for my passport at my local county Clerk of Court office. I believe I paid around $80 & got mine in exactly 2 weeks, but that was unusually fast for some reason. Also remember to have 2 passport photos to attach to the application, which can be done at any large chain drugstore for about $7.50. See link - http://iafdb.travel.state.gov/

a family member absolutely needs a passport, even with military orders. if you need help expediting your passport, call your congressman's office -- they can help you get through the bureaucracy

For all you Moms and Wives....that was one of the first things that I got when my son was assigned to Italy. My sister urged me to have a passport on hand just in case I might need it for emergency travel. If you don't have one I would suggest you get one. They are a good thing to have for other identification purposes also. And hopefully we will never have to use them for emergency purposes. God Bless Our Soldiers. Kathy

RUMORS ABOUT UNIT MOVING TO GERMANY... : NOT TRUE!!!!

I wanted to clarify what I just wrote. When Military orders are issued I do not believe a passport is required.....because they are official Department of Defense orders. If the doctors do not request next of kin then you will need a passport to travel because you will not have official Military orders to fly. I want to say that I am 85% sure of this, but check with the Army Casualty Division - the Red Cross will provide you with their phone #, unfortunately I am at work and do not have it handy. I went through this in July - and it was extremely stressful until I reached the Army Casualty Division, they were extremely helpful. As I said before, Landstuhl is more of a holdover hospital until the Soldier is stable enough to either fly to the States or homebase for treatment, or back to duty in Afghanistan.

Charlene, There is a chance that you will not need a passport to go to Germany if your son is injured. When a soldier is listed as serious, the military actually handles all of the travel for the next of kin, and if you son is not married that would be you. Meaning you would actually get military orders to fly to Germany to see your son. If you elect to go there on your own, then the travel is your responsibility, but they will put you in contact with an agency that assists with accomodations. When a soldier is f
