I don't know if anybody else saw this article, but I thought I'd share it. It is about the story of SPC Tyler Wilson (2/503) and the injuries he sustained May 3. I very good article: http://durangoherald.com/asp-bin/article_generation.asp?article_type=news&article_path=/news/05/news050731_1.htm (if the link doesn't work because it is too long, cut & paste).

I heard from my son from the A Company 1/508th today and he said he took a shower and brushed his teeth just for me. He has everything he needs and nothing he wants. He does not chose to take R&R because he won't enjoy himself knowing he has to be going back to combat, plus he doen't want to miss anything. What a soldier. I'm really proud of him and for all the others that are serving our country. I love them all and pray for the shield of protection from the Almighty God.

About the R&R problems...The best way that I have learned to deal with it is to expect changes...I do not get excited until I am at the airport picking him up. It is very hard when the dates change so much and are so unexpected, but the way I see it is that we are lucky just to be able to have them home! It is too hard to try to plan anything really until they are actually here. I don't let myself get excited until I know FOR SURE that they are on the plane coming home! I have been disappointed too many times by their "scheduled" times to be home, but you know what? I don't care when it is, as long as he can come home to me for a few weeks, that is all that I need! I don't make big plans because 1. Who really knows when they will be home, and 2. My guy probably wouldn't like a schedule of events to follow on his "R&R"! But if I did make plans and had to change them a hundred times because the leave dates were changed, I would do it because I would just be glad that he was actually HOME! Ok, sorry this one was so long...just my opinion! We will continue to love you and support you guys for as long as it takes! Stay safe! Thats all for now!

"Over There" - That was just terrible! The little nicknames & their conversation was like someone trying way too hard ...nobody really talks & acts like that. What a disappointment. R&R - I have known since before my husband deployed that he will probably not get an R&R due to his responsibilities with the job that he does. I'm not upset about it & I accept it. Sure it'd be nice, but I'm way past that and am just focusing on the day-to-day things. I just want him to do the job & come home, I don't expect an R&R one bit.

Just as the others have said, it is impossible to plan for R&R. My soldier was first told July, then August. Then at the beginning of June he was told he was going right then or not at all, so he took it. It was very hard for me to go to work everyday while he was home and I did end up taking a few days off. As far as scheduling dentist and doctor appointments, I found that ours were especially good about getting him in on short notice when they found out that he was home from Afghanistan on leave. Going back was really hard for him and it broke my heart, but once he got back with his friends, he adjusted within a few days.

I also watched the FX premiere of "Over There." I don't know much about my husband's experience in Iraq, and even if the show relates at all with the guys. What I do know is that i did not like the impression they gave of the the cheating Army wife. Yes, wives may cheat while there husbands are away, but i wish they would have shown us in a better light. For example: Wives who are honorable standing by their solider!!! I always tell my husband "I will conduct myself in your absences as I do in your prescience!!" I didn't appreciate there Hollywood drama of OUR lives!! I will not watch again

Mr. Bradley; Your comments are right on as usual. Our son decided not to take home leave with our support and approval. He believes from previous experience that the emotional roller coaster of gearing up to come home and then having to go back would be an unnecessary distraction. So, as the army is prone to do, an officer in his unit said there is one slot left for R & R in Qatar and off he went. Go figure. He said it was the only place on earth hotter than the Stan. However, he is a single guy and I can fully understand the added stress when close and extended families are getting bounced around emotionally. I take these comments as blowing off frustration or good old army griping. Today's military families are a lot more connected than I remember. You did your 14 month tour and you came home and nobody really took notice. The military family is a lot more connected by virtue of the modern world's technology. While I agree with your realistic comments, we are all in this together in the end. I let it go in one ear and out the other. Thanks for your continued support and dedication and is there anything we can do to help you in running this terrific support site/ Tom

On the Subject of R&R, Focus people focus!!. The Army, i.e the commanders have some say on who goes on R&R but when the time comes, it could be greatly affected by this thing called "The War." Combat ops have priority, also weather affects aircraft, then there is getting manifested on a flight etc. If your loved one gets home in the month he says he will ...that's great. If you expect a set time and day you are living on fantasy island. Remember the old saying "hurry up and wait," well guess why they say it ...because it is true. Look at the bright side, in past wars R&R was 1 week to some third world city. now they come home to you and the R&R starts when they get home not when they leave the unit. So it is not what you hope for? In the Army it is called "Adapt and over come."

I also am experiencing a problem with my husbands R&R. We have been told since March that his leave was scheduled for August 4, so I have scheduled my vacation time, planning doctors visits for my husband, and made other reservations (plane and resort) Now they are telling him that he cant leave then. It has been a big ordeal. I wrote to his platoon sergeant and they are trying to get it changed. So you could always try to write to a sergeant in your husbands platoon. I received an email back from him saying he would forward my email to the 1SG and they were optimistic that they could get it changed. There are always things our soldiers have to contend with, family emergencies and so forth, and these dates are just tentative -anything could happen -but it still doesn't matter -it still is disheartening when we know we wont see our soldier when we thought.

I know that many of the commanders are very committed to getting their soldiers their R&R, most all of them experienced not getting it in Iraq. I'm sure there are reasons that some people's R&R gets messed up, perhaps another soldier was injured and they couldn't spare another for R&R and they are going to reschedule. The army is not being malicious or picking and choosing who gets to go and making others stay behind. I for one am not one to believe hearsay, I fully expect my soldier to come home for his scheduled R&R, even if it may not be the exact date I am expecting.

OK I know you aren't suppose to post rumors but this is no rumor at all. I just got off the phone with my husband and he is scheduled to get R&R in October. So all my family and his has asked off work. He has just informed me that 2 guys in his company didn't get their R& R and now he is very worried and sad. His morale was high cause about every week I would send an email telling him how many days till his R&R date. He asked me to stop and I have been doing this since he got there to keep his spirits up. He isn't even sure if he is getting his now. I am furious and very upset. Why would the Army do this? It is very hard and they have made him and I believe that he is getting his R&R and now he isn't sure. I know that everyone was saying well if you have your date you are going. How can they do this? He has been lead to believe he is getting to come home. This is how soldiers get distracted and get injured or worse. I am not writing this to upset anyone or make anyone mad and I am sure someone will respond with an attitude . I am just being honest and I don't want other families to be in shock when their loved one don't get it either. It is a very BIG let down. I am going to look into what I can do for the soldiers, cause I believe they should get their R&R.

The new TV show OVER-THERE is over rated at best. I give it not "no Star" rating. It portrays the Military as having stupid leaders and evil NCOs, only the troops when the search for their inner feelings are things right in the show. As an old combat vet, I only ask who the shows military advisor was ....Jane Fonda? Finally just what we needed ...a "touchy feely" look at the war on terror. The worse part is that people uneducated about the military, combat and soldiers will actually believe this Crap, a bunch of anti-military sound bites made into a movie. Thank you Hollywood for another so called "Pro-Military War Movie"

To the family of SSG Michael Shafer. May you find the strength to get through this time and know that we are all praying for you. I did not know Michael personally but as a military spouse and an damn proud american, my heart hurts. I think about the ones we have lost and how much these men and women sacrafice. Your son, husband, sibling, nephew, cousin, etc paid the ultimate sacrafice and we are such a strong and tight community here that every single soldier is cherished. Unlike the rest of the world who has no idea what we as military and military family go through on a daily basis. The worrying, the distance, and the chance that our loved one might not come home to us. Michael was not just a number and name. He was a person, a strong warrior, who gave his life for our country. I dont have any idea how you feel because I have never been there but I can tell you that I appreciate people like your son for his strength and you as his family for yours. Your son will never be forgotten and he died a HERO!!!

Michael Schafer was a a good friend of mine. He was always smiling, and playing around. He had his off moments like everyone else, but he was only human. When all else failed Mike always had something to say that would make you laugh. He would come up with the silliest things. The shock of his death still hasn't quite hit me. I look at his pictures and think to myself it cant be true, but then I remember the pain and hurt in Danielle's voice and know that it is true. I think about all of our great soldiers we've lost, and I feel sorrow for their friends and families. I knew them by name and face only. On Caserma Ederle you know everyone by name and face. But Mike, wasn't just a name and face. He was my friend's husband. He was my friend. Just like all the others were to their loved ones. Never should a family have to endure a pain this great. But its what was bestowed upon us. I keep thinking I have to be strong for Danielle, but its so hard to not feel. There's no family greater and more tight nit than a military family. Only we can understand, and feel what we go through. Everyone always asks me how do I do it? The answer One day at a time, with the hope and prayer that all my soldiers come home. How do I do it if one doesn't? How do I look my friend in the eyes and tell her its okay when I don't feel that? All I feel is hurt and anger? When I come on here I just look about to see what's going on. I post my condolences. Mr Bradley has done a great job with this site, and the regulars that come here have done a great job with information, and everything else. For that I thank you all, and also for giving me the opportunity to share these feelings. May God watch over Danielle and Mike's families, and help them and his friends to tell him goodbye. He was a great soldier. He was a great man.

To my beloved nephew Michael - words cannot express my grief over losing you, nor my pride in your service to our country. I am so thankful for having you in my life for these short 25 years. I will keep Danielle, your mom & dad, and Timmy in my prayers as well as the rest of your family, friends and comrades - they have truly lost a fine soldier - and one hell of a nice young man. You will always be my hero. Love you Mikey (even tho you hated that nickname, you'll always be Mikey in my heart). Auntie Margaret

Actually, the 173rd is not a Division. It is a Brigade. A Division, like the 1st Infantry Division, or the 82nd Airborne Division is made up of several Brigades. The 173rd (Airborne) Brigade is not part of a larger division. The 173rd consists of 2 Battalions the 1/508 and 2/503. Each battalion is made up of several line companies, A,B,C,etc. and a Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC). Companies have platoons, squads and fire teams. Hope this helps.

The 173rd is a brigade not a division. Every brigade is made up of 3 battalions. 1-508 is one battalion and 2-503 is another. LRS, CSC and D-batt (also known as separates) make up the man power for the 3rd battalion. Each battalion is then broken down into companies. Each company is made up of 3 platoons and each platoon is made up of 4 squads which has approx 8-10 men.

The way I understand it. The 173rd is a division. 2/503rd and 1/508th are units. Thus the 1 and 2. I know there are other units attached but not sure what. Of the 2/503rd there are 3 platoons and one headquarters platoon. Each platoon has squads of 10. It is hard to tell who is on the missions we read about. I just assume if it is not my son then I know he is out there doing his job on another mission. He is my hero just as your sons are our heroes. I think your son is in my son's platoon. Hello all and God Bless these Sky Soldiers and their Families. I was Blessed with some time with Kris, my son and sure will miss him. When asked if he was missing Station Platoon, he replied yes. One thing that really touched my son and our family was the community support when he was home. Support from complete strangers at the airport too. Even children Thanked Kris for serving our country. It was hard to hide the tears so I just rejoiced with a smile of pride. Being a Proud parent of a Sky Soldier is a one of a kind feeling. Kris was very suprised at all the vehicle ribbons and other support. He will be back with the 508 C in a few days, back "home" for the time. The guys did ask for something called a sun shower, sort of a camping bagged shower. Just another idea to add to the package list. God Bless, Debi

They say a "picture is worth a thousand words", but in this case, the photo of your loved one probably will have other sky soldiers in it. It also tells about the unit and what the guys are up too. So a picture can reach many families, loved ones, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc. A photo can bring sunshine to a persons day. Please consider sharing ...but bear in mind, that once posted they become public domain and could wind up anywhere as I have no control of the internet. Also if the photo is of good quality it could wind up in an edition of the 173d calendar or some future edition of the sky soldiers newsletter or book.

If everyone remembers, we had quite a scare a few weeks ago as to if Kris was on the Chopper that was shot down or not. Kris finally made it home and we enjoyed the 2 weeks he was here. Kris left again yesterday heading back to Afghanistan. We are sad that he had to go back, but he was looking forward to going back to his military family. He said he missed the guys and his way of life there. It made me feel alitte easier letting him go this time and I think it was just a little easier on his mother because she was able to keep herself together enough to acutally go with him to the airport, which she couldn't do before. Please keep Kris and family in your prayers as well as all other soldiers and their families.

Italy-based GIs kill, capture bomb makers BY JASON CHUDY Stars and Stripes 7/23/05 DILAY KALAY, Afghanistan —Soldiers from Company A, 2nd Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment killed one Taliban roadside bomb maker and captured another during a chance encounter shortly after midnight Thursday morning. The company was on a mission to track down area Taliban leaders who were believed to be in a nearby town. The Vicenza, Italy-based soldiers were in the final day of Operation Surri Sweep, a week-long operation designed to break up roadside bomb-making cells working in the roughly 2,500-square kilometer Surri District of the Zabol Province. The soldiers were moving to their objective for the early morning assault when the convoy’s lead Humvee driver, Spc. Elliott Alcantara, saw what he thought were piles of large stones on the bank. “It looked like two rock formations on the right-hand side,” he said shortly after the chase. “Then one of them starts to move a little bit. So, I gunned it up the hill a little bit and then saw an RPG [rocket-propelled grenade] across the [one man’s] back.” The “stones” turned out to be two men on a motorcycle. They were part of a four-man observation team sitting on two motorcycles at the top of a high river bank near the village of Dilay Kalay, about 20 miles south of Qalat. Alcantara said that he thought at least one of the groups of men was going to fire an RPG at his Humvee, but they didn’t. “The dudes … they started to take off as soon as they saw us,” he said. “He was 15 meters in front of me, on top of a hill.” Alcantara’s Humvee and its crew chased the two motorcycles through the flat valley brightly lit by a full moon. “…I’m in hot pursuit, over,” radioed 1st Lt. Ari Martyn, 3rd Platoon leader, as they began their chase. Martyn told Alcantara, who was focused on a motorcycle in front of him, “Three o’clock!” and the driver looked in that direction to see another bike speeding away. “I identify a weapon,” Martyn radioed moments later as they closed on the bike. Alcantara gained on the motorcycle and its two riders because of the relatively flat terrain. A small hill, sloping downwards, gave them an added advantage. “I got up right behind him,” he said. “The [platoon leader] fired a shot right as I was up next to him with my front right tire. I cut left, then hit him with my right [side] and ran him over.” Almost immediately there was a large flash. “The RPG blew up right next to us,” Alcantara said. The explosion caused minor damage to the Humvee. Soldiers found the overturned motorcycle and, a few feet away, the RPG launcher and another RPG round. The two riders lay crumpled, one in front of the motorcycle and the other behind. One man lost his arm in the crash and died minutes after. Company medic Cpl.Aaron Medina began working on the other rider, who had a severe head wound. Medina treated the man, lightly bandaging his wound. Later, he and another soldier walked the man, who by then was handcuffed and blindfolded, to a medevac helicopter for further treatment at Kandahar Airfield. As Medina worked on the lone surviving rider, 1st Sgt. Patrick Fatuesi picked through a bag one of the men was carrying. Inside were all the components necessary to build roadside bombs, including Christmas lights for wiring, tiny metal fragments for shrapnel and two baseball-sized lumps of white material believed to be explosives taken from an anti-tank mine. This accidental success,Wright said, fit right in with Surri Sweep’s objective of disrupting the roadside bomb cells. “We captured a lot,” he explained, “IED-making material, a [handheld two-way radio], two RPG rounds and an AK-47. And,” he said about U.S. and Afghan police forces, “nobody was hurt.”

Someone asked about displaying their yellow ribbon and how it doesn't last in the weather. This is what I have done. I have the original ribbon I put out when my son first was deployed in March. Each end of the month I add to the original ribbon keeping it in the center. It doesn't grow too much because the previous gets wilted and weathered but by the time he returns it will have grown and counted the months of my son being gone and welcome his return. We all have our little things that we do to help us get through this. That is just one thing that I do. It's almost time to add another section. Only 8 more additions to go!!!!!!!!

Here's the link. American Airlines Opens Admirals Clubs To U.S. Servicemen and Servicewomen Clubs Provide Welcome, Friendly Surroundings for American Troops FORT WORTH, Texas – Moved by the story of U.S. soldiers with no available USO facilities at airports, American Airlines today invited U.S. military men and women to spend time between flights at American’s elegant Admirals Club facilities worldwide. "It’s the least we can do for our soldiers on R&R from active duty," said Cathy Berg, managing director - Premium Services for American. "These men and woman have traveled halfway around the world to get to loved ones, and we’re happy to say ‘thank you’ by making that trip a little easier for them." Berg said the idea was sparked by a story in The Dallas Morning News, which told of soldiers stranded for hours and sometimes days at DFW International Airport when military charters arrived too late to make the soldiers’ connections. "DFW has no USO facility for soldiers, so we thought, why not open our DFW Admirals Clubs? And then we thought, why not open all of our Admirals Clubs where there’s no USO facility for them?" Under terms of the Iraqi Freedom Rest and Relaxation (R&R) Program, military charter flights transport soldiers on emergency or R&R leave from Kuwait to Baltimore/Washington, Atlanta and Dallas/Fort Worth airports. Baltimore and Atlanta have USO facilities for soldiers to relax. DFW does not. At DFW, and other airports where there is no USO, Berg said returning servicemen and women in uniform or with military ID can enter the clubs free of charge to wait for their flights, enjoy complimentary snacks and soft drinks, watch TV, use the Internet or just stretch out and relax. The program starts today and runs for the duration of the R&R program. "We’d like to be the first to welcome them home," Berg said. American already participates in Operation Hero Miles through its AAdvantage® loyalty program. American donated 10 million AAdvantage miles for troops to use for connecting flights to their homes, with AAdvantage members donating millions more.

Our daughter, who was flying through Dallas relayed that all service members on R&R are welcome to lounge in the Admirals Club while waiting for their flights home. On a side note the lounges have showers. We relayed this info to our son, who is now in Kuwait, waiting to come home for his R&R. He had told us that he had not taken a shower in three days and wasn't going to in Kuwait because of the conditions of the showers there.

There are "legs" and "airborne", but there are also lots of other classes of soldiers. The airborne commonly refers to anyone that is not jump qualified as "legs" because they have to use their legs to get from point A to point B, while the airborne flies in. Sometimes the term is used in a derogatory way, but most often it's just stating the facts and is fairly generic. I was in the Army a long, long time and never heard the term "pog" - although I have heard derivatives that are probably the same thing. But I would hate to guess --- but, trust me, regardless of the meaning it is not a big deal. Just another way to pass the time and have fun.

I've heard my son use the word "legs" when he graduated from Airbone school. He said the military was separated into two classes of people, airborne and legs. He's used the word POG before also, but he couldn't give me an adequate answer for name. Thanks for the WWII story. God bless and keep our Sky Soliders!!

I thought the ones that arent airborne but in an airborne unit are called "Legs"? My son isnt airborne but obviously is in an airborne unit... I'd swear he said he is considered a Leg. I might be wrong but I dont think so ...

Origin of the Term "Pogey Bait" There's an old story going around the Corps - has been for years - about the origin of the term "Pogey Bait". The Marines in China before WW II were issued candy (Baby Ruths, Tootsie Rolls, etc.) as part of their their ration supplements. At the time, sugar and other assorted sweets were rare commodities in China and much in demand by the Chinese, so the troops found the candy useful for barter in town. The Chinese word for prostitute, roughly translated, is "pogey". Thus, Marines being Marines, candy became "Pogey Bait". "pog" used by the army and marines is short for "Pogey Bait".

can you please let us know the context in which you heard the term "pog". I think the definition you were given is incorrect.

WHY I AM HERE CPL CASEY L. ALLEN, U.S. MARINE CORPS Right now, all over the world, you can turn on the television or pick up a newspaper and immediately find someone criticizing the United States for its actions in the Middle East. I guess some people would rather talk forever. Why am I here? Ironically enough, there is a simple bumper sticker that explains what I find so hard to put into words. It reads "Whose son is fighting in place of yours?" The reason that I am here is so others will never have to be. I volunteered to be here knowing that if the job was done right this time, then future generations would never have to continue what could have been ended in the Gulf War. I am more than willing to risk my life so I can do everything I can to prevent whatever family I may have in the future from ever having to make the same sacrifice, take the same risks, or face the same criticism. No matter what political party one may lean toward, the need for some security and global stability is undeniable. I believe anybody who believes otherwise is naive and needs to see downtown Fallujah in person. It is my opinion that if drastic action was not taken when it was, then the wake of the September 11th attacks would have brought more of the same instead of the capture of Saddam Hussein. As I write this I am sitting in a cabana a few miles east of downtown Fallujah. This network of cabanas the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment calls home used to be a vacation resort for Uday Hussein and other Iraqi royalty. The lake these shelters surround is filled with body parts from women Uday brought to this resort, raped, then fed to his lions. All of the negotiations in the world could never bring the Husseins and their terrorist allies to justice. United States Marines don't negotiate. The liberal media and their sympathetic bystanders would have a much harder time if we had a perfect record. The simple truth is that in an environment where you can't tell the enemy from a businessman or roadside debris from a bomb, collateral damage is unavoidable. For some, this is reason enough to say we don't belong here. Right, and maybe we should take more cops off the streets so there would be less traffic. To anyone opposed to the war on terror, or America's policing role in the Middle East, I challenge you to go on a patrol with any platoon in 1st Bn, 6th Marines. Walk down the streets of Fallujah and see the look in an Iraqi child's eyes as he waves and cheers you by. Shake the hand of an Iraqi man thanking you for his family's freedom. I know I belong here because I see what they don't show on CNN. What they don't print in the newspapers. I see what President Bush is trying to tell the world, if they would only be quiet long enough to listen. Take a walk in our boots, but make sure you give them back. We're not finished here yet.

Keep up the good work Wombats!! Another note about those Misty Mates. My daughter sent these to her brother and his squad. He said he really likes it and they do make a difference in that heat. With the desert camo material they can wear them on their uniforms. They are expensive but our soldiers are worth it! What you put in a package isn't very important - just send packages and letters as often as you can. Just getting mail of any kind makes it easier to remember home; and it is always good to know that the people the soldiers love love them too and are thinking of them. Even if everything in the package has to be left behind, given away or thrown out, just getting something from home is great.

Hi ... you were talking about your son saying he doesn't need anything ... m soldier says the same thing ... he has plenty ... don't send anything. Back in April or May I sent him several battery operated water bottle fans so he/they would have them when it got hot (I bought them last summer on clearance.) ... when he was home on R and R he said "mom ... we can't carry that with us in the mountains." I made 7 neck cooler ties when he was home ... he took back 2. Powerade .. "That's all we drink over there." Coke ... "We can get that over there. No problem" The other thing that makes it difficult to send packages is how much they move around and change bases. When he was at one place for a month .. they got one or two mail drops ... all the rest of the mail was sitting at his other place waiting for him. Then he was somewhere else and didn't get any mail drops. The more the mail sits around waiting for him the bigger the chances of it getting getting ripped off. So ... apparently it REALLY varies as to what their needs are. Speaking of those neck cooler ties ... a friend of mine knew I had the extras sitting around and asked for one to use for her job which she used for 2 days and then her husband wanted to borrow it. #1 - she called me up singing it's praises be/c she said it REALLY worked. The 2nd day she used it she said she put it on BEFORE she got heated it and it kept her from getting over heated. #2 - the day her husband used it he was thinking "Yuck ... What's that smell?" He took it off be/c he couldn't stand it ... it was stinky with sweat.

Also when my son was in Iraq I sent badminton and volley ball sets. I'm not sure what the terrain is like for them, they keep saying mountains but maybe some of this stuff would work for your soldier.

Or how about something he can give away to the kids - bags of individually wrapped candy (he can put a handful in his pockets)or maybe something little and silly - like a yoyo? Or maybe how about get all your friends to write a letter or card and put them all together in one package - he can read them and throw them away or post them to share with others. Mail is always precious. I send 1 box per month, 2 cards and 1 letter (that way each week I have something going out) I hope this helps.

My boyfriend is in the 1-508 C/co. I was wondering if anyone has family who is in the same company, and do you know if they have phones where they are staying? I LOVE My Soldier! Thank you to all of the men and women out there.

He doesn't want a cooling neck wrap thing or a misty mate bottle , and he said PLEASE no more food !! I keep reading about all the suggestions on different websites and he says he already has too much stuff !! I can't just send NOTHING!! Anyone else with this dilemma ??

Hooray, 1st platoon, 2/503 has internet access. Not having heard from my soldier in a month, what a surprise I could IM him today. They are hot and tired. Very busy, but doing well. Mail is not existent. Hasn't received our box sent 3 weeks ago. Who ever made this connection possible, thank you so very much. This is a great morale boost to our soldiers and means the world to us at home.

S&R, people in the metropolitan cities understand Italy is now fearing bombs on trains. Many people from small places do not understand this. They do not do commuting into Rome, London, Madrid or also in the United States New York. So it is easy for them to be gung ho because they do not risk their lives on trains!!! But still is a shame people blame soldiers instead of their goverment for being in Iraq plus Afghanistan. Soldiers don't make the policies! Anyway we pray for Italian commuters and for your husbands safety. You are right we are in this together and must work for change so terrorist killers don't have excuses to hurt innocents in the cities of the world.

Hello Everybody!! I thought I would drop a line to give everyone the latest news I have had. I am just back from a much needed vacation - a chance to grieve and get back into the world. And what do you know, all kinds of emails waiting and packages stacked up!!! So I thought I would share with you. I heard from the mother of SSGT Clint Mack (he's in the 173rd - thank you very much) He has earned the prestigese Audey Murphy Award (GO CLINT and Congratulations!!!) From the Support Battalion (you Guys rock!!!) I recieved 2 PT T shirts (I have been informed I am the only one outside of Afghanistan with this privledge - I wear them when I go to the gym) I also recieved a "Support" T shirt from C co 1/508th (Thanks Adele, I just love the kids handprints!!)Also a new book has been released, written by a Combat Medic named Elissa Lonsdale about her time in Iraq with the 173rd called "Blood, Tears and IVs". The book is FANTASTIC!!! It gives insight into the conditions our guys were in. There is also a chapter dedicated to 3 of the fallen soldiers of the 173rd. It is a small book and a must read. Well take care everyone and to all my Sky Soldier "children" take care and stay safe. We love you.
