Beautifully written. What a "true" reporter. Send that to Newsweek. Not one of their reporters could have written as well. Hope you don't mind if I share his insight with others. It is "worth" reading.

If you want to feel good about something, read this, a letter from my son recently sent home to his college friends... Greetings from Afghanistan. It’s been a little while since I inflicted one of these updates on everyone, so I thought I’d share a little news from this small but lively corner of the world. Most importantly, my paratroopers are all safe and doing well. They’re an even more eclectic bunch than one typically finds in any military unit, which a few of you will know is saying something. But a bunch of guys crazy enough to voluntarily jump out of airplanes for a living must have something in common, and they work together under pressure better than just about any group of soldiers I’ve seen. There were plenty of opportunities to observe that this past week. Newsweek recently published a story alleging that some idiot at Gitmo desecrated a prisoner’s Koran while the man was praying in his cell. Word quickly reached the University in Jalalabad, one of Afghanistan’s most beautiful towns, and before the day was over the city was in full-blown riot. The UN compound was attacked and burned, along with a number of public buildings. Although Newsweek apparently admitted the desecration story was unsubstantiated and apologized, the damage to both US-Afghan relations and the newly elected democratic Afghan government will take years to undo, the violence is likely to continue, and a number of lives were lost in the riots and subsequent fighting. Having personally dealt with the human and political cost of bad reporting on more than this one occasion, I can only say that I hope Newsweek is as willing to accept full responsibility for the very real consequences of its own mistakes as it is to demand others accept responsibility for theirs. Spring is turning to summer here, and the terraces and fields on the banks of the river are brilliant green. Further up, the snow has started to recede on the ridgelines, though the high mountains to the north and west will be frozen all year. This is a profoundly beautiful country, comparable to Nepal and India in the sheer drama of its topography, and I occasionally find myself daydreaming about coming back to climb here in more peaceful times. For now, though, the counterinsurgency goes on, valley by valley and village by village. This is a fundamentally slow war, one in which terrain narrows one’s options much more drastically than one’s enemy, and the climate allows either side only a few short months in which to maneuver between the long snowy winter and the brutally hot summer. You trek for days, climbing and descending thousands of feet to gain a few kilometers of distance, only to finally locate the enemy and find that he’s on the next ridgeline over with a 3,000 ft valley in between – only hundreds of yards but a 12-hour hike away. When you do manage to finally close with him, it’s only because he’s ambushing you. Winning hearts and minds, to use a tired and abused phrase, is a generational proposition in a tribal, agrarian society run by warlords with a 99% illiteracy rate where word of mouth and religious sermon are the only functioning media outside the cities. The same applies to building the institutions Afghanistan’s new government will need to independently sustain and defend itself. Creating a bureaucracy without workers who can read and write, paying a national army without a banking system (money can’t be moved from one place to another without being physically carried), and generating tax revenue without a legal and taxable economy to speak of are not the sorts of problems any nation can solve for another overnight. We can succeed here, and there is no doubt we are succeeding now, but sustainable democracy in Afghanistan is a long-term project. That said, there is no doubt in my mind the commitment is worth it. For our part, we'll be over here trying to move the ball forward for the next 10 months or so. I hope all’s well with everyone, and you’re having a good time at whatever you’re doing. Pop a cold one for me.

when i read this website i get more anxious than anything because there is so much speculation. this isn't good. speculation only worries and hurts people which isn't necessary at this time. how can anyone make it through one year if they are constantly worried? short answer they cant. its not good for you or the soldiers. just think about it.

I don't think the individual who posted the negative message about the Koran and the media really read that whole article. How can you say that is a downer? That is exactly how our soldiers feel about the issue. Why should we all care about the Islamic views and beliefs when they don't care about the sanctity of an American life. If anything, that article was supporting our troops -letting them know that we are behind them -whatever they do! It definitely was not a "downer". I think that person needs to read the article again!

A military statement said U.S.-led coalition forces were "currently assessing the cause of the crash and the status of the 17 service members who were on board the MH-47 helicopter." The 17 on the helicopter comprise eight Navy SEALs and nine Army air crew from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, which is based at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga., and Fort Campbell, Ky., military officials said Thursday. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because the military has not formally announced the makeup of the forces on board. O'Hara said "there are still bad guys in the area" around the crash site and that troops were having to "do a recovery and a tactical operation at the same time." http://www.wave3.com/Global/story.asp?S=3541387 There was a website going to show the Taliban video, the website is a blank page today.

If the story of the Koran and the media is not supportive of our soldiers, I don't know what is. I found it to be inspirational, not a downer. I will sending this to several of our SKY SOLDIERS to let them know that there are people back in the States that support them and their actions. They are the best.

To the person who posted the long message about the Koran and the media... I am glad that you don't care, but I don't think our soldiers care either. That is what this site is for- TO SUPPORT OUR SOLDIERS!!! So, please if you don't have something positive to say, save it for another message board. This site is suppose to be an "upper" NOT a "downer"!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was forwarded to me by a close friend. First, Newsweek pulled a Dan Rather on us, running a fabricated story just because they wanted it to be true. They told the world that an American guard at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention center had ripped pages from a prisoner's Koran and flushed it down a toilet. As a result, innocent people died when practitioners of Islam rioted in protest in Afghanistan. Oops, said Newsweek, it seems we can't back up our story. Oh well, it's probably true; we just can't prove it. (Isn't it convenient for Newsweek that the media now have "Deep Throat" to talk about so they can revel in their glory days and divert our attention from their criminal negligence.) The lie heard round the world about the flushed Koran has caused convulsions in the Bush Administration and forced the Pentagon to launch an investigation of unfounded allegations contained in an unsubstantiated story. The results of said investigation are now in, and it seems there are at least five incidents of "mishandling" of the Koran at Gitmo. Well, guess what? I don't care! Are we fighting a war on terror or aren't we? Was it or was it not started by Islamic people who brought it to our shores on September 11, 2001? Were people from all over the world, mostly Americans, not brutally murdered that day, in downtown Manhattan, across the Potomac from our nation's capitol and in a field in Pennsylvania? Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a horrible, burning death that day, or didn't they? And I'm supposed to care that a copy of the Koran was "desecrated" when an overworked American soldier kicked it or got it wet? Well, I don't. I don't care at all. I'll start caring when Osama bin Laden turns himself in and repents for incinerating all those innocent people on 9/11. I'll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle East start caring about the Holy Bible, the mere possession of which is a crime in Saudi Arabia. I'll care when Abu Musab al-Zarqawi tells the world he is sorry for hacking off Nick Berg's head while Berg screamed through his gurgling, slashed throat. I'll care when the cowardly so-called "insurgents" in Iraq come out and fight like men instead of disrespecting their own religion by hiding in mosques. I'll care when the mindless zealots who blow themselves up in search of nirvana care about the innocent children within range of their suicide bombs. I'll care when the American media stops pretending that their First Amendment liberties are somehow derived from international law instead of the United States Constitution's Bill of Rights. I'll care when Clinton-appointed judges stop ordering my government to release photos of the abuses at Abu Ghraib, which are sure to set off the Islamic extremists just as Newsweek's lies did a few weeks ago. In the meantime, when I hear a story about a brave marine roughing up an Iraqi terrorist to obtain information, know this: I don't care. When I see a fuzzy photo of a pile of naked Iraqi prisoners who have been humiliated in what amounts to a college hazing incident, rest assured ... I don't care. When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the head when he is told not to move because he might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the bank .. I don't care. When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran paid for by my tax dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being "mishandled," you can absolutely believe in your heart of hearts . I don't care. And oh, by the way, I've noticed that sometimes it's spelled "Koran" and other times "Quran." Well, Jimmy Crack Corn and -- you guessed it -- I don't care! ----------- Doug Patton is a freelance columnist and political speechwriter who has worked for conservative candidates, elected officials and public policy organizations at the federal, state and local levels. Let us all be thankful that we live in the times we do now , where information is fairly accessable , not like many years ago when waiting ,worrying, wondering and praying were the only avenues, I can't even imagine ! With the internet , satelite phone , cell phones and other messaging services , we do hot have to wait 6 months to hear from a loved one with a letter in the mail. Sometimes it is a double edged sword and we know TOO much , but all I know is GOD BLESS OUR SOLDIERS AND THEIR FAMILIES! Pray , pray , pray and be thankful!

No news IS good news, but it's the uncertainty that is so hard to take. I seemed that we had much better FRG support to rely on when my son was in Iraq with the 1AD. They were a good source of preliminary news whenever there were incidents involving our guys. We cannot get any response from, or even find a good link to, any FRG for the 508th or 319th.

To: PFC Kris Ashburn's grandmother I understand your concern. In my bittersweet experience of being a military wife, I've learned to recite the phrase "no news is good news". I know this does not take the fear away but it can help change your mindset. Also when you take this new outlook you may find some comfort in knowing you are one of many, many family members waiting... and in that waiting you find a new strength. Waiting... waiting... waiting...

There are times when I feel totally supported on this site and there are other times where I think it gets me more worried than if I never checked the message board. It's almost too overwhelming when we hear of an unfortunate occurence in 'country'. There's always so many posts of the same articles over and over, I think that gets people even more worried when they see other people are worried (me too). I helps me when I remember that no news is good news. I am just as worried as everybody else, but I just wanted to send a reminder that stress affects our health and daily life. Please have faith that our soldiers are well trained and doing a wonderful job.

I am very proud to say my nephew is a US soldier in the 173rd Airborne. My prayers are with him and all of our solidiers. He was involved in the Iraq war from the beginning and was involved in the first night drop over northern Iraq. After nearly two years in Iraq, several injuries, two visits home, and being stationed in Afganistan for his next tour, my nephew has just become an American citizen. When he enlisted in the Army it was in response to 9/11 and although born in England, he grew up in Georgia since his family came to the US when he was 8 years old. I wish all American citizens could have his patriotism. No country is perfect but we'll take the imperfections of the United States of America over those of any other country to raise my children under. God Bless one and all.

KABUL (Reuters) - A U.S. military helicopter crashed during an anti-guerrilla mission in eastern Afghanistan after being hit by ground fire and the fate of 17 U.S. troops aboard was not known, the U.S. military said on Wednesday. The twin-rotor Chinook crashed in remote and mountainous Kunar province on Tuesday afternoon while bringing troops to reinforce soldiers on the ground carrying out an anti-al Qaeda operation, it said. The aircraft received direct and indirect fire as it was approaching its landing zone and crashed about 1-2 km (half to one mile) away, said U.S. military spokesman Colonel Jim Yonts. "Whether or not that caused it to crash, we do not know yet," he told a regular news briefing. Yonts said he did not know the fate of those aboard and declined to provide more details on the grounds that fighting was continuing in the area against a "very determined enemy." "We do have a large force engaging that enemy and at the same time we are trying to care for our servicemen that were on the aircraft," he said. Kunar Governor Asadullah Wafa said the helicopter was hit by a rocket and a spokesman for the Taliban, Abdul Latif Hakimi, claimed the guerrillas shot down the aircraft in the village of Shorak using "a new type of weapon" he did not describe. A U.S. military statement said U.S. and Afghan troops had sealed off the crash site to block any enemy movement toward or away from it and U.S. aircraft were flying overhead. Wednesday's New York Times quoted unnamed U.S. military officials as saying troops aboard included Navy Seal commandos and that the Chinook was an MH-47 modified for special operations. The U.S. military statement made no mention of special forces and said the aircraft was a more common CH-47. "This is a tragic event," Brig-Gen Greg Champion, the U.S. deputy commander for operations in Afghanistan, said in the statement. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the families, loved ones and service members still fighting in the area." "TREES CAUGHT FIRE" Kunar police chief Abdul Ghafar Momand said the helicopter was thought have come down either in Shorai, around 15 km (10 miles) from Asadabad, or on a mountain between neighboring Marogai and Ghaziabad districts. "Trees caught fire on the mountain and that may have been caused by the crash, he said. The crash was the second of a U.S. Chinook in Afghanistan in less than three months. Another came down in a dust storm in Ghazni province on April 6, killing 18 Americans, including 15 troops. It was the deadliest military air accident since Washington first deployed forces to Afghanistan and overthrew the Taliban in 2001 for failing to hand over Osama bin Laden and other al Qaeda leaders responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks on U.S. cities. At least 14 other U.S. troops from a 20,000-strong mostly U.S. foreign force pursuing militants have been killed in increased guerrilla activity since March aimed at derailing Sept. 18 parliamentary elections, the next big step in Afghanistan's difficult path to stability. At least nine U.S. military helicopters have crashed in Afghanistan since 2001, including one MH-47 shot down in March 2002, killing six U.S. troops. Two Chinooks were hit by rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire in heavy fighting in the southwest last week and one was forced to make an emergency landing. The Taliban's Hakimi said 35 Americans died in Tuesday's crash after the guerrillas killed 7 U.S. "spies" on the ground, but his reports have often proven exaggerated or incorrect. "This is a huge success for the Taliban," he said, adding that the guerrillas had video of the crash and would post photographs on their Web site (www.alemarah.com). It did not appear to have been updated on Wednesday. (Additional reporting by Yousuf Azimy in KABUL and Saeed Ali Achakzai in CHAMAN, Pakistan)

To everyone with a loved one down range. I am sorry that this has to happen to our soldiers , our husbands, our loved ones. I am always told by my FRG and the rear detachment not to watch the news and I have been doing so good. But as soon as I go to check my email there it is!!! So yes I am gonna worry! I do not understand how you couldnt worry? I love my husband dearly and I am sure all of you miss and want your loved ones home where you know they are safe. But I come to this site about once a week and everything is about what is right and wrong. Dont tell the location, watch what you say. I will tell you I am sick of it all. I can think of better things to say. I myself wish my husband was home but I know he chose this path and I am going to support him and pray he is going to make it thru this deployment. For all the family members who are worried, I feel you. I am gonna worry. I wouldnt be human if I didnt. I am posting this cause I feel like this site should be used so we can support each other thru these hard times and support our soldiers. To my hunny down range. I love you and hurry back so we can be done with all of this!!!!!

The August 05 issue of Soldier of Fortune magazine picked up (and added to) an article by PFC. Arguello. He writes a bit about Chosen Company and 1st Platoon "The Bullies". The 3 page article is dated 9 May and details the 3 May battle the 2/503rd took part in. It has a good color photo of Spc. J. Leatham, Sgt. M. Ortiz, Sgt. N. Pak, Spc. N. Colon, and Pfc. N. Reilly. If you know one of these soldiers it might be worth picking up a copy ($5.-)

To Rebecca - as far as dates and plans for their return from Afghanistan - yes, it is early!! But, based on the return from Iraq, the dates were never announced and we were never certain when they would show up in Vicenza. For most of us, this site gave us a heads-up a few hours before the first plane landed and the return lasted for several days, if I recall correctly. As far as planning to buy plane tickets, that is very difficult. The official welcome ceremony was scheduled for a couple of weeks after they got back - but being there when they actually walk off the plane would be extremely difficult to plan. The soldiers were held in Vicenza for about 30 days to process and clean gear - then had block leave to go home if they wanted. Hope this helps - as the time nears it will be a little clearer. But it will never be dates cast in stone.

Regarding the cell phone problem, my son has a cell phone with CellulatOne. When they cut off his service and would not tell me anything about the account, I just kept working my way up the food chain until I got a manager. When he gave me the same line of nonsense, I asked for his name, then told him I would be sure it was included in the letter to the editor I planned to write to the local newspapers telling the world how CellOne disconnected my son's phone while he was in Afghanistan defending CellOne's right to jerk people around. I soon received a call from a senior person there telling me they thought they could add my name to the account until he returned. You just have to be very hard to get along with if you want to get anything done with the cell phone companies. The low level customer 'service' people are not permitted to use their brains - they just read company policies back at you.

Hello everyone !!!! I just thought I would put my 2 cents worth in. Ok if you are trying to help your son or daughter straighten out a bill (yep these people can be very dumb - when my son died I actually had one tell me they had to have a phone call or a letter saying I was authorised to be on his account - I was trying to use his Death Certificate) My best advice is when you have any contact - tell them to have a Power of Attourney done in your name. My son had mine renewed while he was in Iraq (It becomes invalid when they die)and it is good for 1 year. Otherwise he will have to email them and place you on the account. Otherwise you can go to the management and do alot of begging - but because they are trying to protect their clients they usually can't help you without their permission. Take care and be safe Sky Soldiers - we are thinking of you and your families.

My son got one as soon as he got out of basic and they told him all he needed to do was get a copy of his deployemnt orders and they would suspend his phone service until he returned to the states. He says he sent them , they say they don't have them and NOW they have sent this account to collections !Because he is over 18 and I do not have power of attorney , they say they can't talk to me about his account , but if I want to pay his bill , they will take my money!! I am OUTRAGED at their treatment of my sons account considering he is in friggin Afghanistan ! Any one else have this problem or any sugggestions .? "Dear Mary; Thanks for writing, it really breaks the monotony, in fact, your only one of four who have bothered to do anything." I can't sign his name, cause I didn't ask him if I could. But I know he'd love to get *more* mail, and he's probably one of the luckier ones, since he has four people sending it. I wanted to respond to the posts regarding mail sent to soldiers married or single. My husband is a Sky Soldier and I actually have submitted his name to various groups to receive mail. Not because he isn't getting support from his family, but because it is nice for him to know that Americans appreciate what he is doing. While he was in Iraq he had several people who would write him and send him packages. He said he was surprised that the people took the time to send him a card or note. I can say that the time and money they spent was well appreciated, as my husband shared his packages with others. I myself sent several packages and magazines to soldiers there as well. Many of which I didn't know, for the simple fact I was greatful that someone had taken to the time and effort to acknowledge my husband's sacrifice, it was only fitting that my family do the same thing. Keeping the soldiers privacy in mind the military does not provide a list of who gets what type of support, married or single all the Sky Soldiers have more than earned the support of the American ppl. JMHO

Sad thing is that unless they come home early--which I doubt---it will be April, 2006 before I see him again. I agree with Bill. Just arguing with Louis isnt going to do anything. Who cares what he thinks. He doesnt have a family member in the military, so he is just trying to create drama. I am a wife of a sky soldier and if every girl on this earth wanted to send him a package -that is fine with me. My husband is out there doing his job, protecting us and our freedom, and I feel like he deserves to get plenty of packages. I cant afford to send him something every single day, so if others want to share theiir support and gratitude to my husband -more power to them. I think it is ridiculous to bring up such crap about these dating solder sites. Whats important? Definitely not that!

do you really think that with all those websites for finding a date a soldier goes to anysoldier.com ( or similar) to find a girl (or boy)? and you're telling us to get real? also, if a guy is married and asks for packages, doesnt mean he's cheating! And i bet his wife is but happy to know that he gets pckgs while hers are still on the way! and if i can do something to ease their deployment i dont really care for their personal background, because in the end, they're out there fighting to provide freedom for everbody, at a high risk . if you want to know everything about a soldier before sending a pckg or letter, go ahead, but dont treat us as dumbs who send support to evil dishonest soldiers. last, i would like to post a quote from a movie: "Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? (...)deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. " ( from "a few good men")

Please don't twist my intention into something negative. If the military is going to be depicted in a good light - which it should be - it's important for people to be made aware of the "bumps" people may encounter while trying to be supportive to a soldier who is technically a total stranger. They get your address, afterall. No, don't have family in the service but have quite a few friends who have sent letters & packages to military personnel abroad. Most have had very positive experiences. However - you have soldiers out there who utilize online dating services. Again - that's fine. But it's not fine if a well meaning person is spending time & money on the person thinking they're not hearing from anyone! Do you want to worry and fret over someone whose having cyber sex with bozos on the side? Come on. Get real. As I stated, this type of thing isn't the norm. There's no harm in helping the public weed out these bad apples from the getgo, though, which is why I offerred advice on what to ask a soldier if he (or she) happens to get in touch. Lets drop the topic now.

I don’t agree with these conversations lately about asking a soldier who posted an add if he’s single or not; i personally just wanna give my support. And i don’t like asking myself whether ‘every soldier is honest & ethical’. Are you guys pointing fingers to soldiers or just to men in general? When you go to a club do you actually know if the guy you’re talking to is married? He can tell you anything he wants to make you believe his truth. So please let’s stop this conversation now cause it wouldn’t get us anywhere. I mail my packages and i know i am doing it for a good reason. I don’t wanna investigate whether these guys have or haven’t a girlfriend, wife or other 20 people they get mails from. I don’t even know why we are discussing this; where does this come from? These guys are not asking for money or jewels; they are asking for support letters, shower gels and meals… And then again, it wouldn’t be my business to know. When we give money for fund-raising campaigns do we actually know whether the money goes where it has to? The thought is what counts. Or are we supposed to mail a form to these guys first with a few questions? And for what? To see if he’s worth it or not to get our care packages? I wanna believe all these guys are on the front line and to me everyone there is worth it! Everyone is worth every single card or package we send. Many here complained when girls asked if a guy was single and now you are pushing them to do it. This is funny. Probably it’s not the soldier’s fault but the person who is sending the packages, who expects something in return. I’ll be waiting for smart ass comments from you all… don’t disappoint me! And keep supporting our guys!! Grazie.

whether these soldiers are married, single, man, or woman it shouldnt matter. You can still send a married soldier a care package and they would still enjoy it just as much as a single soldier. Just because they are married does not mean that they arent risking there life or fighting for your country any less. Ignorance.... I am a wife of a soldier and I know myself would never ever send a crude or nasty letter to someone who is just supporting our troops. So please dont sterotype, we are all different. If you do, I do not think you would be worrying about this and just let these people get what they can. They ALL deserve it. And I really believe that the people that send these packages, etc. over do not really care who gets it, just so it benefits a military person.

We'd all like to think every soldier is honest & ethical, but the reality is you have many who aren't on the front lines who have time to fiddle around on internet dating sites and the like. This is a fact. And that's fine - as long as he or she isn't projecting themselves as being a "mail-deficient soldier" and wasting caring people's time. There are also many soldiers out there who sign up to non profit groups who turn out to be married! Quite a few decent people out there have actually recieved angry letters from these soldier's spouses. So not only do these soldiers misrepresent himself to the person who "adopted" him or her - they take it upon themselves to pass their "adoptees" addresses onto their irate girlfriends/wives! No, this isn't the norm. But the public needs to be made aware that not every soldier represents themselves honestly. To avoid any badness it's wise for people to ask 1) if the soldier is *single*, so you don't end up with an aggitated partner sending you rotten letters and 2) WHY the soldier joined the organization.

just a thought for people who were given soldier's names from one soldier support group or another thinking a soldier is all alone - there are soldiers out there who give their names to various non profit groups who actually DO have family they correspond with. For whatever reason they just want to get *more* mail. So before you get too worried or upset over a stranger - make sure to ask "your soldier" if he has kin. Also ask him or her why they signed up to correspond with someone. Are they using it as a dating service? Are they hoping to get more mail then their buddies? Or are they genuinely alone, without family, and longing for some sibling-like support? Making these clarifications right off the bat is really important, because you want to make sure your time, money and kindness is offerred to the right person. That way good feeling can be shared by all - and your worry isn't squandered. Good luck to all.

Patti: It doesnt matter how long it takes for your soldier to get to you. The 15 days starts as soon as they get to their U.S. destination. The travel time to and from doesnt count. Which is wonderful. What a wonderful surprise for that mother to see her son walk into her office. I know it must have been rough sending him back over, but atleast that means their tour is usually half over. Cant wait to see my husband in 6 weeks. Wahoo!!!

It is so cool that you got to see your son. My son tells me that he won't get his mid tour leave until around November. He is in Able Co. You said that it took your son 6 days to get home and 3 days to get back. Does that mean he was only home for 6 days? Just wondering if their travel time is taken from their 15 day leave. Thanks!

Received a great surprise on June 6th when my son walked into my office ---unannounced from Afghanistan. It was a great surprise !! The entire agency was there to celebrate with me !!! And while he was home, my fiance and I decided to get married so that my son could be part of the ceremony and give me away. It was an unforgettable event. The hardest thing was to put my son on that airplane on Tuesday morning sending him back to a war zone. But as he tells me "mom this is what we are trained for". I am very proud of my son and all the other soldiers. SPC Richard Rowell; C co 2/503rd -- I love you and an sooo proud of you. Take care and stay safe. BY THE WAY - - he was flown all the way home by the Army--no cost to him. It took him 6 days to get home but only 3 to get back to Afghanistan.

This is in response to Kris's Mom. My brother is also in the 173rd, 508 Charlie company. He called for the first time since they left Tuesday morning (June 21). He said that all the guys were fine and not to worry because they they knew how to do their job well. I hope this brings you some comfort.

To Arlene, Thank you for your love, caring and generosity! Our son in 1/508 A co. I send him stuff quite often and I know not all the guys get stuff from home so I will be putting lots of extras in the next shipment. I sent him some shorts in the last one not knowing if he'd be able to wear them but he was really happy to get them. I've tried to anticipate his needs since it can be a few weeks between calls and him receiving his requests. So here are some of the things I've sent that he said has come in handy: Gold Bond foot powder, I send a small travel size for his ruck sack and a big one for refills (I do that with most stuff) Lotrimin, Benadryl, Advil, Eye drops and Ear wash, good lotion like Lubriderm, always send Q-tips, batteries, baggies, wipes, chapstick etc. Oddly enoughy he loved the shower gel I sent, he said it smelled so good after being out in the feild for so long. He said it smells so crappy over there! I've even sent him little t-light candles that smell like home even if he doesnt light them. You just never know what's going to make their day. I'll be sending him the shave cream too. I sent some idividual bags of Planters trail mix that he said saved his butt one time because they only got 1 MRE per day. I just wish there was something I could do to make the mail faster! Well, to all the Sky Soldiers, Thank you. I meet people all the time and when they learn about our son (and soon to be our daughter who is in basic training at Ft. Leonardwood) are over there fighting they ALWAYS SAY TO TELL THEM THANKS! FOR THEIR SACRIFICE AND BRAVERY so I want to pass that on. HOOAH! Keep your eyes open and your heads down. Listen to that small still voice that is GOD and come home safe.

i try to follow much of my son's locations and things that are effecting his area. So, as you can guess I have been on edge about this latest mission activity in Southern Afghanistan. My son is in 173, 508 Charlie and cant call via phone for 5 months now. We chat online but haven't heard anything for several days now and with all the news I am guessing why. Doesn't sound like they are out making smores for a few days. If anyone has had contact from this squad since Monday could you drop a few lines on here, please. He is busy but I worry sometimes...ok all the time. I dont think I'll ever get over this heart heavy feeling when I hear of what these troops are going thru, I Pray for each of their safety and sanity. I am sure this isn't easy for them either and try to send funny jokes and happy thoughts during this time. Thanks to this site, for without it I would be lost.
