This is regarding the nasty and ignorant post that was to 100% italian. I dont know who you are mr/ms "post" man, but appantly you are severely mistaken and no nothing about what goes on at Caserma Ederle. I have lived in Italy for a number of years. Ive seen the changes that post has gone through. One thing has remain constant. The post would not run smoothly if the Italians were not there. How dare you refer to that woman as a spy. Why did you come to this site which is for support of our soldiers their FRIENDS and their families. I can only assume that you dont have any friends that care about you the way she cares about her friend. I have not posted on going on here since my husband was in Iraq. I come to see whats going on, and to see if theres anything Ive missed. Being back in the states, when all the info is in Vicenza is hard. 100% Italian is giving these other friends and families information that they might not always know since they reside in the US. I consider that a very generous quality about her. And just in case you missed what the webmaster has all the way on top the page.....Writing nasty letters, is NOT WELCOME, take your hatred some place else. Thats for our soldiers as well as the support system on here. What you said was completely out of line and not only disrespectful to her, but to every other family member and friend that seeks this site as a comfort. If you were any kind of a real man/woman you would see what an ignorant JACK!@# you were being and post an apology to 100% Italian and Mr Bradley for you total lack of respect. That being said, Mr Bradley, you have an awesome site here. I get to see pictures of my husband as well as my FRIENDS in the different units. Both 508th and 503rd. You have done a wonderful service to us Military families and FRIENDS. Thank you. KICK ASS Red Devils!!!!

I read that message for me. I don’t know anything about army. I was just trying to help out. Anytime i saw a question popping up i asked a friend of mine (an army wife) for the answer. So i could post it here. As i said i am just a friend. And i know many on here personally. I don’t remember having written anything about post or deployments. And i never said i am worried for my friend, i never posted that. Maybe you are confusing mine with someone else’s messages. ‘When you were in Milan’ sounds like long time ago. Cause i can assure you that packages to the U.S.A. (cause that is what we must write after APO AE) have a maximum limit weight of 2 kgs. And why would ‘you’ as an American mail stuff from a post office in Italy. You said you mailed stuff last year to Afghanistan. And in case you didn’t mail it from post, that means you’re not involved with the military either. So why is it ‘you’ then complaining about my messages (that you even made up cause i never gave advice to anyone). In my wise hometown we have a saying: the hen makes eggs but the rooster’s butt burns. To whom it may concern. To others, thanks for the supporting messages. As i mentioned yesterday, tomorrow is June 2nd, our Republic day so i want all Americans to know that shops are closed in Italy (also post offices, in case some of you wanted to mail something from our PO…)

I received this e-mail today from a special friend I teach with. My husband forwarded it on to our son in C Company, 1/508. We thought others at this site would appreciate the poem too. We feel it is appropriate for the 173rd and all of our deployed soldiers. THE FINAL INSPECTION The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?" The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep. Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place, Among the people here. They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand." There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly For the judgement of his God. "Step forward now, you soldier, You've borne your burdens well. Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell." ~Author Unknown~ Remember, it is the Soldier, not the reporter Who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet, Who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the Soldier Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, and Whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag. Please pass this on and pray for our men and women currently serving our country and pray for the families of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

Hi, I'm not sure what happened to your boxes, but the first box that we sent to our son when he was in Italy, the post office didn't have us fill out an custom form, (we didn't know) it took a couple of months for the box to come back to the states... so when it did come back, they had us fill out the form and so the box could be resent. I was wondering if they had you fill out the custom form.

I want to thank Arlene H. For your post on the 29th.. I was feeling very blue because I had missed a phone call from my son earlier that day. When I read about the water ballon fight it made me laugh out loud because I'd sent my son packages of water ballons a few weeks ago.In a strange sort of way it was like i'd made contact with my own.We really are all in this together and it's the simple, small stuff that makes us strong ,and the sharing of the simple that makes us united.I'm fascinated with the idea for sending frozen B-day cakes through the mail and have gotton so many great ideas on how to fill the huge boxes that I buy.Thankyou all that keep it POSITIVE!

Being a wife & living in the US separates myself (and other wives) from what is going on at Caserma Ederle. Are the FRG groups that are in Italy active? Are emails normally shared, or information, or anything? I was just wondering the general consensus because I never hear anything from the FRG over there for my husband's unit. I just want to know if this is the norm for all units. Thanks.

I was "just a friend" during the Vietnam War,and even tho' it's been 38 years since my friend did not come home from that war my heart still hurts from the loss of my friend.Today my son is serving in Afghanistan and if it were not for the support of family, friends, and comunity I would be a complete basket case!I am grateful for folks like yourself who are strangers to me but support my soldier just by being here on line. And I am sorry for the loss of the Italian soldiers - We are all in this together.I,for one, mourn for any soldier lost no matter the nationality. It's not just americans fighting this war on terrorism.Stay strong. from a "FRIEND"!

wow that was really uncalled for! Haven't we gone throught this before and all agreed that we ALL belong here whether we are American or Italian? Because recordless of our nationalities or relationship to our soldiers they are still just that OUR soldiers and they all love and care for us for their own reasons. 100% italian I find your insight into things very refreshing. And whoever said those mean things I don't agree with you but I agree with your right to say it besides that's what your soldier is fighting for along side of mine. But remember this is a place for comfort and support not to start dumb drama because you have nothing better to do.

I'm sure it hasn't changed!

I am a military girlfriend. I hold no formal recognition with the powers that be. I am at the bottom of the chain. I hold no Military ID card, I am not a "dependent" or a parent. The man I love may face unspeackable dangers, and I am at the mercy of those who possess this recognition for news. I understand this and accept this. I am a military girlfriend. I have promised to be here for him upon his return, no matter how long he is away. People may say I am insane for making such a commitment with no guarantees, but I hold onto our promises and have faith that he will come home safe to me. I know full well that my love for him fuels him in the worst of times. I am a military girlfriend, there is no ring on my finger to symbolize our commitment, though I love him no less for it. I hope every day that he will be able to call because a simple 30-second phone call can bring the greatest spectrum of emotions...smiling with tears in my eyes from so much joy and pain. My relationship is based on the brief communication where "I love you and I'm okay" speaks more than volumes and gives me the strength to keep going. I am a military girlfriend., I take no moment spent together for granted. I hold onto every touch, caress, kiss, every word. I have memorized the feel of his skin, his smell, the sound of his voice, and I play it over and over in my mind so that I will not forget. I cry myself to sleep some nights because missing him hurts so badly, but wake up the next morning, brush myself off, and start a new day. I am a military girlfriend, the events of the next several months hold my life, my love, and my future in the balance. When you watch the news reports, you may turn away and go about your business relatively unaffected. When I watch news stories of the war I do not see nameless soldiers a half a world away. I see individuals who will be forever changed by war. News of every casualty causes me physical pain and deep sadness. I am a military girlfriend, not a spouse or family member. When you say your prayers for the wives, children, mothers, and fathers, please don't forget about me. **** I know that this is can ring true for all of us, not just the girlfriend, but the wife, the mother, the friend, and everyone else. The love for our soldiers is what brought us all together and is why we have such a strong family here. I'm so blessed to have found this website!****

Hi, all, I just thought you might want this. You all help me out so much when I come here to check for news and pictures. I know the spacing isn't right, but hopefully you can see that its a poem. The ~~~ marks the end of a verse. I wrote it for one sky soldier in particular, but I'm pretty sure it applies to them all. ~~~~ Not a day goes by Yellow ribbons I don’t see Or the flag flying high As a soldier walks by me. ~~~~ Not a day goes by That my heart’s not filled with pride That you are out there fighting For this life of mine. ~~~~ Not a day goes by In these last two years That I don’t see Old Glory And my eyes aren’t filled with tears. ~~~~ Not a day goes by As I’m here, safe at home, That I don’t think of you, Out there, all alone. ~~~~ Not a day goes by That I don’t wonder why If you’re the one who’s over there, What right have I to cry? ~~~~ Not a day goes by, That I don’t think of what I’d say. And how we all should thank you, When you come home to stay. ~~~~ Not a day goes by, That I don’t think to write you. To say it just one more time, To tell you all we thank you.

As for the young lady who is facing fear for the first time - well you came to the right place !!! As you can see you are not alone! Recognising your fear is the first step - it means you are human. But there are plenty of people here who will listen to you, pep you up, give you info and yes even sometimes tell you to Get Control !!!! But remember, tell us your fear not your loved one. They have enough to worry about and they are the best !!!!! Our Sky Soldiers are a special family and so are we.

You are extremely lucky that you have been able to talk to you BF so much. I told mine that he wasn't aloud to call me because it was more important to call his mom and family. I know how much she worries and she lets me know when he calls her. He and I email and send lots of letters. So one good thing that you can look forward to is his call when he gets back. He must know that he has someone wonderful waiting for him when he gets home so that will give him strength to do his job. Plus God will guide him. So you may want to try to find something to do with your time until you hear from him again. I have taken up scrapbooking and I'm making one of all his emails, letters, and articals about the 173rd so that we can both go through it together when he gets home. I hope you find something. Plus you have this great website with all of these wonderful people who will stand behind you. Good luck. And may God bless and keep each one of our soldiers safe. Plus watch over us as well, since we do have one of the toughest jobs in the army.

hello everybody! i have been checking this website for three months now. that's when my bf left for afgh. i have been spoiled since he left, receiving his emails everyday, receiving at least 3 phone calls a week...as i can read here, not all of them are able to do it. so, yes, i am so thankful. but, yesterday he called. telling me he's going on a mission. dunno where or for how long. obviously. so suddenly, i'm scared coz i know i wont have any news for awhile. i was just wondering how you can put up with it. because it's been just one day and i'm already freaking out. i just wish someone could give me a little advice to live with this. because i'm simply scared that something might happen and i aint nobody to be notified by the army...so the only way i have is, in case, read his name somewhere online! alright...i know..i'm being way too negative now. but , as i said, i'm just freaking out. so.....please. explain me how to deal with this. i know you can do it. thanks. ;o)

Just a little info. on your guys getting packages down range.....if your family member is not at a main operating post (i.e. if he's always on te go or if he is with 503rd or 508th) they only get packages every 4 days (in some locations it takes longer). The packages are sent by air (meaning it has to be weighed to even the load on the chopper) So if you sent a big package or if there are a lot of boxes that are going out they can only take a certain amount of at a time so that may be the reason for some packages taking so long to get to your loved ones!

They are in individual little brown boxes & they are sold in these flavors: choc, lemon, cherry, blueberry, apple, pumpkin, & pecan. An added bonus....they're only 50 cents. Hope you can find them. Also, I found my Mexican themed supplies at a local chain called Party City. Tons of great ideas in there! I liked the baseball themed idea too.

I spent most of today flying back from Ireland. When I got home, Mr. Bradley had posted new pictures. I was able to see my wonderful husband, whom I have not been able to talk to while on my trip. Thank you, Mr. Bradley, for all you do for us. I spent most of the flight thinking about Memorial Day, about all the soldiers who have given everything and all the others who give so much. I missed my annual Memorial Day flag planting at the Veterans' Cemetery this year. My parents kindly went in my place to honor the men and women who have bravely fought for our country. I do not post here often, but I wanted to say that the soldiers and their families are in my thoughts, not just today but every day.

Hmmmm.... Pizza Party... How about those lunchable things? You know the ones the kids like to take to school? Or you could send those large dry crackers (I forget what they are called - I hate getting old!!), pizza sauce in a can (it is in the same area as spaghetti sauce), a plastic container of Kraft parmesean and romano cheese. Since we can't send beer how about root beer? Did you know there are actual kits to make this stuff? They can pretend it is dark beer !!!! Go to a party store or one of the ones on the internet and they actually have plates and napkins and tablecloth that looks like giant pizzas. How about a CD with Italian music?

We are a baseball family - Go Giants!! So for the Combat Wombats I am putting together care packages of: baseball schedules (they are giving them out at Home Depot), peanuts, Cracker Jacks, Vienna Sausages - closest thing to Hot Dogs I could find, mustard/ketchup, still trying to find those packaged pies (apple) that used to be everywhere, and a couple of bats & balls. Sorry guys no beer, nor can I send your moms - wish I could! My thoughts and prayers go out to all the Gold Star families & friends who have lost a loved one. Especially thinking of the families of; SPC Freeman, SPC Struble, SSG Woodard, Major Murphy, and CPL Tucker. Today there was a documentary shown called "Proud to Serve: US Army" - very good! It was mentioned that since WWI there have been 88K POWs & MIAs. Hard to believe so many - they too will always be remembered. Thank you Mr. Bradley for this wonderful site! Stay safe and stay alert Sky Soldiers!!

Some ideas for things to throw into boxes for the guys, I just set my soldier's squad all electronic games that I found at walmart that were only a dollar! They had racing, baseball, basketball, soccer, and a bunch others. I'm not completely sure how well they will work but I thought they were fun (plus they were small so bonus they would be easy for them to carry with them). Also a bit of a traditional thing for me is to send gummies call Road Kill. They are really funny. They actually put tire tracks on little animals. Plus they're under a dollar. Jonathan finds them extremely funny so I know I make him smile eveytime I send them. Stay safe Sky Soldiers.

Hi All what a great memorial day it has been here in the Dodge household. I was searching the chosen site for a picture of my son as I had'n seen him in any so far. You see he is sort of a free lance kind of soldier I guess. He goes where he is needed. He told me he usually supports the 1st or 3rd squad so I always look there first. Well he was with the Bullies on their recent mission and I saw him in the video they they took. It was so good to see him I knew it the moment I saw it it was him. Well just thought I'd share it with those that understand. I hope you are all having a good day. Bye for now Michele

An add-in on the theme ideas - Pepperoni (for the pizza theme question). Also, jalap. peppers are available in cans (for the Mexican theme), as well as a variety of tomato ideas from the Rotel company. I sent my husband the Mexican theme box, hasn't reached him yet, but I'm sure they'll love it. Another new spicy snack: Pringles now has jalapeno flavor.

For a home barbeque, you can buy the already prepared, nonrefrigerated ground beef, they have a BQ flavor!! comes in envelopes. Send along with flour tortillas, baked beans, pickles (in the plastic sealed paks), chips, packaged cotton candy! (OH my, how about Gummy bugs!) Just some thoughts! Happy planning! Vicki

To Stanley Rogers - your note about your son's "camping trip" was priceless and brought back alot of memories. So many times we would head out from the motor pool in my armor units or later after flight school, take off in a flight loaded with soldiers, and every time they were full of energy and looking forward to all the 'fun.' By the time we brought them home they never wanted to see a campfire or tent again!! But, you know, the next time we loaded up, they were full of that same energy again. Must be a "soldier thing." To all the parents and loved ones on this special day - this soldier thanks you for the support you are showing our troops and each other on this site.

I know this is waaaay early, but just as a general idea for packages. I think it would be really cool if friends and family of troops from the same platoon got together to send out 'theme' packages. With Christmas as an example, one person could send a fake tree, another could send stockings, a few others different lights and ornaments. That way we wouldn't all end up sending them a bunch of the same thing. I thought we could use this example for other packages. anyone?? :O) Nice to get together and maximize our support.

Just heard from my son today. He is in Charlie Co. "Chosen Few" 3rd Platoon. Just returned from a patrol, he called it a camping trip before he left, and when I talked to him he called it brutal. It was ground pounding all the way. He sounded tired but proud and morale very good. What gets to him is the camel spiders. We had a lot of laughs and he could be home for R&R pretty soon. He said the morale of all his buddies was very good. Sky Soldiers All The Way! Where does America continue to get these young men and women? Never ceases to amaze me.

I feel terrible for you when you have to keep reminding folks about the websites purpose. Thank you for what you have given us in this website - the 1200+ photos you have posted have given my family emense comfort - we can look through them and see what our soldier sees every day and that in itself makes him seem not so far away.

My apologies to everyone. Mr Bradley is correct - this site is for our Sky Soldiers and their loved ones. Today I got a big reminder. I heard from my guys at Support Battalion and they were very angry that I was hurt. I never realized that my voicing this could have such an effect. Well I emailed them back to say that everything is COOL !!! Soldier's Dad and I have had a very enlightening conversation and we understand each other and why he was so upset. But it did teach me that If I am angry or hurt I should send a private email that this site is not where I should do this. So I would like to apologise to everyone. SO - To get back to the important stuff. Support Bat. is doing well, kinda bored - "send more movies Mommaski". Just sent out a "Fiesta Box" - tortillia chips (put in a tin, they tend to break into itty bitty pieces otherwise), plastic bowls of salsa (bought them in the store like that),a serape (for them to put on the ground or on a table),Our Lady of Guadalupe candle (to light to keep them safe), a pinata filled with candies and small toys (carefully chosen) for them to play with the children or just to be silly, and 2 recent release DVDs. So Sky Soldiers - stay safe and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers as are your families. Love to all.

Yet when I visit the message board we still have people discussing NON-173d ISSUES. To these people I say, "Take your non 173d stuff some place else. I really don't want what other people or organizations do to other people to have any impact or play in this message board." Focus people, Focus, its about the troops!!!

To the veterans of 173rd Airborne Brigade Association, specifically the Texas Chapter, I offer my heart felt appreciation for your incredible support for our wounded Sky Soldiers. I can't begin to thank you adequately for the time and effort you have given to our wounded men and their families. Your actions confirm what we always tell folks: our Army's greatest brigade is associated with the greatest veteran's association! Please know this; the Sky Soldiers in Afghanistan are giving better than they're taking from the enemy. The battlefield heroics of the Sky Soldiers on 3 May will swell your chests with pride. It certainly has for me. After just completing what was one of the most destructive battles of enemy forces here in Afghanistan, every man involved was ready to do it again. Their only concern was the welfare of their wounded comrades. You great Sky Soldier veterans have helped ease that concern more than you may know. Looking forward to seeing again soon. Very Respectfully. Sky Soldiers! Colonel Kevin Owens

I sincerely hope that Momanski does not equate this message board with anything other than what it is. A message board to help all of those with soldiers fighting in this war. Her insight has been very helpful, and I shall miss hearing from her. I hope she reconsiders. I would also like to point out that we are all from different parts of the county, from different races and with very different beliefs, and if our soldiers can put all that aside and help each other fight a war together, then I think we should put it all aside to help each other through this difficult time. I value this message board and do not want it to become a political agenda.

Don't know the background of Ron and Soldier's Dad, but I DO know the background of Mommaski and I know which ones I would prefer to sign off. This site is not for political grandstanding. The organization has admitted it made a mistake, has said publicly that it will change it's rules, but whatever they do should not impact our support of 173rd soldiers and their families --- most specifically the families that have lost loved ones. Turning our backs on our own soldiers families is far worse than delaying the entry of one mother into this prestigious group. Don't leave Mommaski - just accept the apologies from all of us that we have folks out there that type before they think. Your message to us motivated me even more cause it was from you. And i had the chance to email you out of this board, I am M.Weiss’ friend. I know he might get deployed again soon. Correct me if I'am wrong, but memorial day is the day we respect, honor and salute those who paid the ultimate price and to the family's that sacrificed the most. As a mother I am honored my son countinues to carry their tourch,he does it with pride honor, and dignity. On this deployment I have been very disapointed in this web-site, This is a site that actualy got me through alot of sleepless nights on the Iraq deployment I wish I could say the same for this one, but I can't. To my son I send you a RAINBOW of love.

Hello everyone. Dear Ron and Soldier's dad. I cannot tell you how much my heart hurts right now, how devastated I feel right now. I am a Gold Star Mother. How easy it is to sit in judgment. I too was outraged. In fact I called National Headquarters as soon as my husband saw the article and forwarded it to me. Did you call to ask why? Here is what I was told - As you know (or do you?) the Organization was founded in WWI but really got it's start in WWII. When the bylaws were made by the women it was a different time - there were even then Japanese and German descent men serving in our Armed Forces and they served with honor and some died but the women did not want to let these foreign mothers join them - they did not want to look into the faces of these women and wonder if their family member had killed their son. From today's standard this is so wrong but back then it was accepted behavior. The problem is that those bylaws (and the stupidest dress code you have ever seen) is still in effect. Until now apparently this has never come up - but we have changed in our outlook and our values. So now what needs to be done is that at the Convention in June it is going to be proposed for that bylaw to be changed. Then it will be printed in the newsletter and the General Membership must vote on it. Anyone who has ever belonged to an organization of this size knows the rules can be changed, it's just not fast. The other thing I have to ask is did you read all the article? They purposely submitted her name knowing her name would be rejected and it was done at Memorial Day time to gain the most publicity. I do NOT agree with what they did. I feel that they should have judged her case on an individual basis. They allow in mothers who are from Guam and Puerto Rico and they are not American citizens. But to put out a blanket statement that because I belong to the organization I should be ashamed makes you just as guilty as them. You do not know the loss I have suffered. Only another mother can understand  heartache in my heart at the loss of my only child. My son and I were very close and my baby is gone. Who am I supposed to turn to? If I leave the Gold Star Mothers who will take their place when I need someone? You? Do you know the ache of giving birth, of being mom and dad because your husband is on float and the vast emptiest of empty arms? I will never see my son again, nor feel his hugs, nor hear his laughter, nor will I ever know the joys of watching him get married or hold a grandchild in my arms. So what do you offer me in it's place? I am sorry you feel this way and may you NEVER know what I feel. I hope everyone is doing well. And for those who know the true meaning of Memorial Day - May God grant you Peace. I guess I am not wanted until GSM change their bylaws, so I will sign off until I am welcomed back. God bless you all. And to all my Sky Soldiers - I will always love you and you will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

I could not agree with you more, Ron. Ann Herd and the other Gold Star Mom's sons died to put an end to bigoted nonsense like that. I think they disgrace the memory of their own sons and daughters by belonging to an organization that will not accept the mother of a fallen American hero because she is Filipino. Every member of Gold Star Moms should be ashamed of herself.

There is an FOB Lagman where 173rd troops are based in Afghanistan, I don't know if it's named for the SSG Lagman named below but whether it is or not I'm disgusted with the Gold Star group over this decision.**********From Newsday>>>>>>>>> Everyone agrees that Ligaya Lagman is a Gold Star mother, part of the long, mournful line of women whose sons or daughters were killed in combat for the U.S. armed services. Her 27-year-old son, Army Staff Sgt. Anthony Lagman, was killed last year in Afghanistan when his unit came under fire during a mission to drive out remnants of Taliban and al-Qaida forces. But the largest organization of such mothers, the American Gold Star Mothers Inc., has rejected Lagman for membership because _ though a permanent resident and a taxpayer _ she is not a U.S. citizen. "There's nothing we can do because that's what our organization says: You have to be an American citizen," national President Ann Herd said Thursday. "We can't go changing the rules every time the wind blows." http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/newyork/ny-bc-ny--goldstarmother0526may26,0,7336814.story?coll=ny-region-apnewyork

We received an email from our son talking about the kids in Afghanistan. He said that candy, gum, cookies and small food items were the best - said the kids went especially crazy over Oreos. He also said that things like small toys, shoes, clothes and so forth were not a good idea. The bigger kids will beat up the smaller ones and take them. The best things are food that the smaller kids can eat right there with the soldiers around so they don't have to worry about the big kids later. He also said that we should not send him anything that the kids could potentially use as weapons like baseballs, marbles, etc... He pointed out that while most do, not everyone likes the soldiers being there and they do not want to give out anything the older kids could through at the soldiers through the wire. That's his best advice. He is with the HHC 1-508, but I imagine it is good advice for everyone. Send the soldiers plenty of candy and Oreos and they will have a great time giving them away to the kids.

Well, i'm sure if a soldier doesn't want to leave his fellow soldiers, i'm sure he can stay. Its just there to give them a break from all the day to day drama they have to deal with. So they can go back a bit more refreshed. Sort of like a recess, but instead of once a day, its for 2 weeks once a year.

Rebecca - the only way your soldier can be recalled after discharge is if he goes into the Reserves or National Guard to fulfill some commitment from his enlistment or to serve til he earns a retirement, OR if he retires from active duty. If he goes into the reserves, he could be deployed with a reserve unit. IF he retires, like me, he could be recalled if the Army decides he has a critical skill that they require. There have been some retirees recalled, but they are rare. There is no easy answer, but for most soldiers that complete their enlistment without a reserve commitment, they are discharged and do not have any danger of being deployed again.

Thanks for the information you provided, but I have a question. They CAN'T be redeployed after they are discharged? What if a soldier was deployed twice, once in Iraq and then now in Afghanistan, and then gets discharged in May 2006. Is there a possibility that he could get called back to service and possibly for ANOTHER deployment anytime after that? Will he be retired but possibly called back? I think my boyfriend and I are both afraid he will be called back to service even after he hopes his term ends. I would really appreciate any information from anyone. Thank you so much in advance.

My fiance's ETS date is Mid year 2007. If they decided to re-deploy them Spring of 2007 which they technically can do (from my understanding) my fiance would be held until the deployment was finished. It is usually 12 months deployed, 12 months at base. Hope this helps.

the stop loss goes into effect 3 months before deployment.. so if you have 8 months left after this deployment, you should be safe from stop loss. how deployments work, as far as i know, si that they will spend the same amount of time back on base as they did down range, so stop loss would start again 9 months after they get back.. if they have to go back.. i did read on the news that another unit they were going to send to our theater was dropped.. so you never know!

Rebecca - I'm afraid I don't know all the specifics, but I have enough understanding for some general guidance on Stop Loss. If a soldier has an ETS Date (date to leave the service) and it falls within 60 to 90 days of a scheduled deployment, then they cannot leave the service until that specific deployment ends. So, if someone was scheduled to leave the Army in January 2005, they had to stay for the Afghanistan deployment. Once they return to Italy, they will then be discharged - normally a couple of months later. I believe most of the soldiers had their ETS dates adjusted to May 2006 for this deployment. They can't and won't be held for another deployment in 2007 or beyond.

Hello everyone. It is true - when one of "our" kids get hurt or worse we want them to know that we care, But also we must walk a fine line dealing with privacy. Mr. Bradley has been able to get us a contact at Ft Sam Houston (Thank You sir). Some of these young people who are able to return to their units do not wish to have their families informed - they don't want you to worry (Like that isn't happening!!) I can understand their reasoning. For those shipped out for longer term treatment maybe the families will post that here so we can send cards of encouragement. But sometimes in the event of serious injuries or death - you just don't think of all the people that need to be notified. Your heart is so empty and your brain just shuts down. "Mom" you're intent is a heartfelt gift to us your "family" but we will not hold you to it. believe me when I say - your heart is so empty, your grief beyond understanding that it takes days for you to even remember your own name. After a couple of days to a week you will come back to this site and you will see all the wishes for a speedy recovery or the expressions of sympathy and believ me they will mean more that you can possibly imagine. Within this magnificent family of the 173rd is another family and it is comprised of 13 families now. It is a family no one wishes to join. 13 new heroes that will join the heroes of Vietnam - they are not alone and neither are we, because we have you. My prayers, my love, my thoughts and my Blue Star Tree are with you always. Sky Soldiers are the greatest and it's Airborne all the Way!!!! I grieve all over again and I shed tears not for PFC Tucker but instead for his mother and father who are left behind.

We have to let them do their job without any strings attached. We have to let them live their lives, because so many chose the Army. They were not drafted. So let them spread their wings and live their lives. Pray that God will put his protected shield around them. Pray for the families that have lost these young men not only in the 173rd, but all the others that are being lost. God Be With the USA and lets hope we keep God in our Nation. Mary L - was wondering about the wounded, too. How do people who aren't next of kin find out if a soldier has been injured?

I received a call early this morning from my boyfriend. He's with 1/508 ACO and they've been quite busy. He sounded really good, much better from the last time but that was 3 weeks ago. It was very bitter sweet talking to him knowing that we have a fallen Soldier and others injured. I knew the moment I heard his voice how blessed I was. To all of the families who have lost I cannot feel your total pain but I can keep you in my thoughts and prayers and I know that we are better off for all the hero's we have out there today!! On the hard days when we are missing our Soldier so very much and we havn't heard from them in ahwile I sit and think of those we've lost and remember how hard it is for our guys over there without us. They are a true testament of how blessed we really are in life!! I will stay focused on the mission here at home so that when he comes home, it will be even better!!

I would also like to send a card to the family. If someone can please email me at gina@hcnes.com. May God bless our soldiers.
