Your son said that the piece won't be aired until next April? I wonder why they are waiting so long? Do you have any idea?

I, too, have ordered party things from www.orientaltrading.com as Mommaski suggested. When our son came home for a few weeks after the Iraq deployment we threw a party for 40+ family and friends. I ordered the camo bandanas and we used them as napkins for the Bar-B-Que. I had a wreath on the door with the plastic paratroopers (complete with little chutes) hanging from it. Our son just loved it. We also ordered pkgs of the American flag pins. I got flag business cards from the Office supply store and printed "thank you for celebrating this happy day with us. We ask that you remember the men and women still in Harm's Way by wearing this pin". Each guest received a pin and card. These were little, inexpensive things but our son was so pleased. You might try it when your soldier comes home.

Hi Everyone I just got my flat rate boxes in the mail today and was a little disappointed at how small they were. I guess I'll save them for can stuff. I would have saved $$$ this week as one of my boxes cost 9.50 and if I could of stuffed all the things into a flat rate it would be 7.70. I'll figure it out someday. Has anyone else heard anymore on wether or not Tom Brokaw is really doing a story on the 173rd? I'm searching around and if I find anything I'll post it. Well have a good weekend its rainy here in Mass so no yard work for me until tomm. Bye Michele

Dear REd Devil Supporter - hello !! Nope I didn't freeze them just sent that box of Hostess Cupcakes the way they were - the guys said they were a little dry but they didn't care they were great anyway. You see I don't bake- not without a signed release form anyway (that way if I accidentally poison someone with my cooking it ain't my fault) I say good job to anyone who bakes or even likes to bake !!!!! But for me the kitchen is like an alien battlefield !!!! Also if you are supporting a large group, like me. And you are looking for a lot of silly things cheap try - www.orientaltrading.com You can buy things by the dozen like hacky sacks and mini hibiscus print fans or by the unit although I don't really know anyone who would want 200 porcupine balls !?! They also have theme ideas. If nothing else it can give you some ideas. Love to all

Some tips for sending cookies: when our son was in Iraq I found that sending the "drier" varieties worked the best. Anything that was too moist just didn't taste good by the time he got them. Peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, snicker, doodles, and good ole' chocolate chips were the best. For the choc. chip I doubled the cookie dough but not the chips so if they melted it wasn't a huge mess. I used those glad containers and packed box with bubble wrap lining and had no problems. The cookies arrived safe sound and tasty! Hope this helps. Thanks to all for the "in the box ideas' I love them and can't wait to shop! Please keep the ideas coming.

Families and friends of the Red Devils Please have your soldiers turn in photos to their company chains of commands to be added to the website. Once I receive a photo it takes me 24-48 hours to post and then Mr. Bradley (the best webmaster I have ever met) posts them to his site. Your Red Devils can also come see the BN S2 shop directly to turn in photos.

I spoke with a friend the other day, her son is also in the 173rd, 2/503 HHC. She spoke with him last, he said that Tom Brokaw was there doing a story on them. So if anyone can figure out how to find out when it will be on, that would be great. Mike thought probably in a month or so. It would be awesome to see our guys in action over there! I don't know how much of the brigade will be featured, but at least the 503 HHC. Has anyone else heard about this from your guys?

We spoke with our son Will, 1-508 c co 3rd platoon this morning on the net, he said that they had been on quite a few patrols recently, the weather is getting nice, they work out in their gym quite a bit, and generally seems OK. He gave us the web page address for the 3rd platoon, www.airborneberserkers.com , it is a pretty good site. Also I got a number off of the www.anysoldier.com site for a mailing kit from the usps which they send out to you for free. It is called the carekit04 you order by phone and the number is 800-610-7833, I got my mailing kit within a week and you get 8 boxes, large type envelopes, a roll of tape, custom forms and all for free delivered to your door! Will, if you see this we love you and think of you always, stay safe. love mom and dad

Hey- two quick questions.... 1) What are good websites to upload pictures. I figure if more soldiers knew where/how to post pictures then there'd be a lot more (and I'd like to upload some of mine too...)..... 2)Red Devil- are you vacationing in Italy or do you live in Italy? Just curious... ~Karen~

To those looking for pictures, Chosen website has quite a few of really nice pictures with captions, Able and Battle have some pictures posted. Remember the 503 got to Afghanistan after the 508. As a Mom, I wish all they had to do was post pictures, although I think they are working too. You can access these from the main page. Hope you see your loved one, enjoy!

Who ever wrote this message is very mean and cruel and how can you say it's Just a Joke? People don't post messages or say things like that if they really don't mean it and try to cover it up. Our soldiers goes wherever they are told to go and do what they are told to do and if you don't like it then you better watch what you say and when and where you say it. Someone could take it the WRONG way....

Hey, understand I am not trying to start anything here so don't y'all get uptight and start screaming at me BUT., has anyone tried to contact the 2nd/503 and find out why the 508th has 35 pages of pictures and the 2/503 has only three or four pictures. I know they are busy and it may be that the 503 is just not supplying the pictures but I sure would like to see some. The Chosen Frame has some pictures of one platoon but that is about it. Red Devil Supporter : Well shoot you are in Italy !!!!!! Well heck how about "A Taste of Italy" box?!? You could put in some of those wonderful Italian cookies, that hyperactive coffee and one of those little coffeepots, spices, olive oil (wrap in bubble wrap) and some of that little dry bread. As you can see I remember some of the things I ate when I visited just can't remember the names (it is the pits getting old) How wonderful for the guys to get some of their favorite things that they miss from Italy. And is the one thing you ladies from Italy can get that we in the States cannot.

I really do love this country, but... 1. Only in America... can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance. 2. Only in America... are there handicap parking places in front of a skating rink. 3. Only in America... do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front. 4. Only in America... do people order double cheese burgers, large fries, and a diet coke. 5. Only in America... do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters. 6. Only in America... do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage. 7. Only in America... do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place. 8. Only in America... do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight. 9. Only in America... do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'. 10. Only in America... do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille.

Lord make me an instrument of your Peace, Where there is hated let me sow love.Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is discord, harmony. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is dispair, hope . Where there is darkness, light . Where there is saddness, joy. Oh devine master grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love . Hi Karen: I have already done the Pool Party Box (Baby inflatable pool, rubber duckies, tropical drink glasses (plastic), straws with flowers on them, cans of tropical fruit juice, leis, and sunglasses) I also just sent out a movie Box(2 new release DVDs, microwave popcorn, whoppers, licorice whips, good n plenty, chocolate covered peanuts) You can make these up for one person or for his whole group which is what I do. I have also done a birthday box (Hostess cupcakes, candles, package of balloons, silly hats, goodie bags that I put goodies in and not noisemakers (I didn't think it was a good idea in a combat zone), presents and mini umbrellas - he kept complaining he was hot) I send a box every month to my children in Support Bat. so anymore theme boxes would be most welcome. Lets hear it for our Sky Soldiers !!!!

One last thought before I head to rehearsal... We've been talking about Christmas trees and decorations. What would y'all think about having an overarching theme to send this Christmas. For example, the two I came up with where: "White Christmas" sending the tree, and having all the decorations in white sending the song "I'm Dreaming of A White Christmas" along... or for Elvis fans, "Blue Christmas" sending the tree, and having all the decorations in blue sending the song "I'll Have a Blue Christmas." I just think it'd be fun to have a theme from the board? Yes, no, other thoughts? (Yea, I know it's like 8 months away.... am I overly organized??) ~Karen~

As I was in class last night I had an idea come to me and I'm curious as to what you all think. We seem to be sending everything "in a box." And we've even been talking about Christmas "in a box." So we ought to start something like an "In A Box" campaign. Put together themes, and put all the components of that theme "In A Box." For example, "Birthday Party in a Box" like Judy- sending cakes, candles, presents, etc. Or "Summer Camp in a Box" like Mommaski suggested little fun toys that the soldiers can play with and then pass onto children. I know growing up I looked forward to the summer so I could go outside and jump rope, or play with jacks, and marble, etc. Someone once mentioned sending a pool and rubber duckies, so you could even do "Pool Party in a Box." I think the "In A Box" possibilities are endless. What do y'all think? ~Karen~

Old Soldier's Wife, Red Devil Supporter B CO: I'm going to kill two birds with one stone here. Red Devil, you asked where I was located. Well, that's a trick question. I am from Ohio, but I attend seminary in New York. I will be ordained a pastor in 45 days (not that I'm counting!) After I'm ordained, the church will assign me a parish, so I could go just about anywhere! So Old Soldier's Wife, I know how it is to move all the time. I'm a pastor's kid (and soon to be pastor myself) and in my 24 years on earth I've lived in 5 states, 8 cities, and umpteenth houses. I have never lived outside the USA, but I've applied to be an overseas missionary so that may change in the next five years or so. Anyhow, that's my introduction to me :) ~Karen~

my son PFC Dewey Spence is in 1/508 C co 3rd platoon was able to instant message him this morning says all is well and gave me a site where you can see pictures. www.airborneberserkers.com he also said he received more packages and the soup I sent was really good I think it was bearcreek brand in packages they just add water. also asked for a headlamp with a red lens for when you go outside at night. a pot to cook in and an electric burner. mail seems to be taking about a month for him to get. Also just to let you know the usps mil kit does not come with flat rate boxes just priority big difference in price when you go to pay shipping, remember you can go to the usps website and order the flat rate boxes. This website has been a great support for me and everyone who shares has given such great ideas and advice. To all thank you

Project/stay busy idea: Perhaps those of you who have experienced deployments do this already, but I find it helps me to feel stay close to my soldier - I bought a 3" 3 ring binder and a bunch of page protectors. I did this through Basic and Italy and have a new one just for Afghanistan. In the Afghanistan binder I have printed out the maps I feel will be useful for quick reference (thanks to Mr. Bradley for making them so easy to find!). Also in the binder I put letters (and the envelopes), print outs of any emails or chat sessions. News articles. I figure this kind of stuff will be kind of cool/have a lot of meaning to him (any future kids), especially when he is older. The binder I bought is the kind where you can slip a piece of paper in for the cover ... so it says "XXX's Letter's Home", Unit name, Afghanistan and the date of his deployment. It's amazing how fast the binder fills up.

To Karen....Yes, our son is in Afghanistan (1/508 HHC S-2)and he spent the year in Iraq with the 173rd. My husband and I spent 22 years on active duty (he was a helicopter test pilot as well as MANY other jobs), 16 moves, 9 different states and Germany. Our son attended 3 different high schools in 4 years! So, it has been an experience. We have been "retired" for 12 years and I miss it everyday. The military people you meet, live with, cry with and laugh with are a special breed. Our son is trying to decide if he wants to remain in the Army or get out at the end of this tour (He should have been out in March 05 but the Army extended him). I am so grateful for this website where we can all stay in touch and ask/receive advice from our 173rd family. You asked about the figure that T.R. is making for my husband.....I'll post a picture as soon as I receive it....may take some time because he is making the helicopter also!

Another Birthday idea: My soldier had a birthday while in Italy. I sent many of the same items that have been mentioned .. the Hostess cupcakes, candles, party bags etc. I also bought a pinata and filled it with a variety of candy. I had to take all the stuff to a place where you buy the box to fit your stuff ... it cost a lot to send, but it was fun. Anyway, the other thing I included in the Birthday box was a small photo album. As I was making it, I thought gee, this just seems like something a "mom" would enjoy, but out of everything in that box, my soldier said he really liked the photo album! He said he liked seeing how he had changed. I bought one of these cheap ($2) little purse size albums at Walmart. I personalized the front of it. Then I found pictures from his birthdays thoughout the years - trying to represent each year. I only struck out on one year ... I couldn't find any pictures for that year ... they probably still need to be developed!

I have been reading some of the previous posts about OPSEC. Someone had previously offered to get a copy of a packet given during meeting in the mail if someone else needed it ("OPSEC and Me"?? or something like that). My husband is also deployed and I am not in Italy, so that information has not been available to me and was not offered to me by my FRG. Can someone that would be able to mail a copy of that packet please email me? Thank You.

Just a bit of info. We received and email from our son 1-508 C. Co. and he had gotten packages on the 27th that we had sent on the 5th and the 12th (we had sent two on the 12th). Looks like 2-3 weeks for arrival. I sent bar cookies wrapped with plastic wrap in tins and I also bought the Gladware type containers because they have mice. He can reuse them for other snacks the mice would like. I padded each layer of cookies with plastic wrap to make sure they would not shift around. I used a recipe from http://verybestbaking.com./recipes/detail.aspx?ID These are recipes that are supposed to travel for long periods and survive the Middle East heat and humidity. No feedback from our soldier yet. We only get one maybe two emails a week and no phone calls since early March. He says they are all well and having some "fun". God Bless them all. If you have trouble with the link please email me personaly. I'll let you know if the cookies arrived edible as soon as I hear. Thanks for all your support and TO MOMMASKI, your strength and devotion are an inspiration to us all. What a beautiful way to honor your son. I am proud to have even this small association with a woman like you.

Regarding sending cookies .... on a different message board I read occasionally, the moms there said they had better luck sending homemade bar cookies than the individual homemade cookies. They seemed to feel they held up better than the "regular" cooky. Also ... about vacuum packers ... some moms on that other board also said they felt that just good ole freezer bags worked well. I don't have a vacuum packer so I wouldn't know, but those comments sure made me feel like I didn't have to rush out for a $100 vacuum packer. :) Anyone else have opinions about freezer bags vs vacuum packers? I think this weekend we'll do chocolate chip bar cookies and try sending those.

Mr. Bradley, I know you are busy and I thank you so much for this website. Obviously some people are using this for their personal vendettas and this must stop. I understand what the Italian girls are posting in their language! It is ridiculous behavior for adults to portray. How easily we forget the grieving families, how easily we forget the purpose of the website. We must stop being selfish, this a time to think about other people, our soldiers whose lives are on the line day and night for our freedom.

Karen, The link to the "camel round up" is www.battlehard.com Click on "Commander's Update" in the left window. The photo is at the bottom of his update. Thanks for asking. It sure made my whole day, week, to see that smiling face that I miss sooo much! Another idea that I did for Christmas while they were in Iraq, was a 2' Christmas tree covered in photos (colored photo copies of my own photos). I had them laminated, punched holes in the pictures, attached them with red, white and blue ribbons, and put the 173rd insignia at the top of the tree. I included pictures of guys in his squad and their wives, along with pics of Jake as a kid doing goofy stuff that I know would cause him a good "razzin'" from his buddies (like the one of him at Disneyland acting like a total nerd, with his shorts hiked up to his arm pits and Mickey Mouse ears on!) That was a fun project for me, but by the time he got it, they had to move to a different location, so he had to take all the pics off the tree and leave the tree behind. We live in a very small town (about 10,000), and we have THREE of our local boys in the 173rd. I'd love to be able to do something for all of them this year. Jake is in 2/503 B Co, another is in the 1/508 and one more in 2/503, HHC. I would love to get a picture of all of them together over there to run in our local paper, but I'm sure they are spread out all over the country! Hope everyone is doing well, all of the families and especially all of our soldiers!

Hi to all who are interested in the 173rd action figures. I inquired about them and the person sent me all the details re: the cheapest way to do it, the custom way etc. He is a true artist but they are not cheap for a figure of your soldier it runs about $300.00. However they are authentic and he will even try and match a figure to your soldiers likeness, with all the correct medals etc its really something. Also about cookies I sent choc. chip to Iraq and they were fine. I had one of those vacum sealer deals and they were okay. Yes you can send a Christmas tree. I sent one as well with stockings for the squad and xmas music and dancing santas all kinds of goofy stuff and some funny xmas movies and cartoons like Charlie Browns xmas and Frosty of course!!! I'm going to make a DVD of family and friends and set it to music and send it out for his bday. I'm going to have some of my co-workers(cute 20 yo girls) hold signs of encouragement. I got this one from my sister-in-law whose son is in Iraq and he just loved it. I just bought a bunch of water ballons for his squad as I hear its hot over there and figue they could have some fun with them. All the summer stuff is just coming out here as I live in MAss but I bet all you guys down south have this stuff all year round. Well stay well everyone any new idaes I'd love to hear them I get all mt best ideas from those that went before me!!! Michele

Karen--- The first thing that I ask my son when he gets deployed is: how many in your squad and what are their names. I send for a group of 12 even though there are less than that. You never know who might drop by for dinner:) As for the christmas tree idea, when Nathan was in Iraq, I sent his squad a 2 foot artificial tree with plastic battery operated lights, plastic ornaments, tree topper, and christmas tree skirt. They loved it. I don't think there are any restrictions. What does everyone else think? Arlene

to federica: I just sent today the same things to my husband! You have to go on post, at the post office near the library, but ask your friend his old adress in italy. You'll have to write it with his name on the top left corner of the box and his adress in afghanistan in the middle (it is like he was sending something to himself). Good luck

Who ever wrote this "I don`t know why some american girls hate italian girls so much maybe because we are so sexy, maybe because your soldiers go crazy for us??????????????????????"... i was hysterical laughing when i read that. I am an American girl and my BF is deployed in Afghanistan with all the other sky soldiers... but i have to tell you, YOU ARE SO RIGHT! Im not one of those Italian girl haters though, as I am Italian American..but based on all the bickering on this website, i can see why you would get defensive. This web site used to be a place for information and support, and now it is my entertainment! I get such a kick out of seeing everyone argue and leave nasty comments about everyones post. Don't let any of the negative comments get to you! Those negative comments are just comming from people who ARE just jelous of you.

I was hoping that anyone here in Italy could email me if they hear about any events going on that can be done with young children. Any suggestions?? Feel free to email me at the address above. THANKS

Thank you Gina, what you just wrote is sooooo right.I am Italian, I have been reading this website ever since my boyfriend was in Iraq and some people just can't stop using this for their own ego. I don't understand why and I don't know why some women feel they are competing with each other.....oh well....this is not the place or the time to do that. Nobody is better than anybody and there is no competition and no arguing about that....let's quit, I am sure you are all wonderful girls and concentrate on what it will be like when you will be able to hug your soldier again.....I long for the day I will see his beautiful smile again and I will be able to tell him how happy I am he is back safe. At our second deployment together I have learnt to treasure every single moment I am given to spend with him and every chance I get to show him how much I love him. This is a time where you should concentrate on finding something to make your special soldier feel very very special and very much loved. God bless you all.....T, if you read this keep a smile on face and remember you are right here in my heart

People please, stop doing this. We are here to support each other and our soldiers. It does not matter if you are Italian or American, black, white, red, yellow or green. We need to all stick together and comfort one another. I know there have been clashes with the American and Italian women, but we need to all pull together. I have met a very sweet Italian girl. She and I have become very good friends and we talk everyday on the phone. I met her on here. So lets all pull together and stop this war between the two nationalities. Everyone is on this message board for the same reasons, to support our soldiers. We all love them, miss them and cannot wait for them to come home. Please stop the fighting and name calling and make a bond. I know there are American women out there for the wrong reasons just as there are some Italian women out there for the wrong reasons, but just becuase they are Italian doesn't mean that they are bad or out to hurt our soldiers. So please make a freindship not another enemy.

Hi All, my son has celebrated two birthdays so far with the 173rd. Last year he really liked his gift: I sent a letter and a heavy-ish grade paper to all the people I could think of who love him and asked that they help him celebrate in some way by writing a note, a couple of jokes, a poem, a picture, whatever. Almost all the pages came back....boy, those were days full of happy tears, reading lots of caring put on paper....I bound them together at Kinko's and sent it over. He still says it was the best present he ever got. This year we called everyone and had them record a greeting on a small tape recorder, then sent the whole shebang to him. Haven't gotten much reaction from that one.....

To Karen and Old Soldier Wife : I just thought I would let you know, TR made a Beautiful figure of my son and as soon as I get the last item to add to the base I will be emailing a couple of pictures to Mr Bradley (maybe he can post them so you can see the craftsmanship and love that goes into these figures) His attention to detail is amazing!!!! My son's best friend came from Ft Rucker to see us and he said the figure was extremely accurate. He truly is an artist.

To Karen: You asked when my husband would receive his PILOT figure....I hope to give the figure to him for Christmas. But I'm one of those people that purchases gifts early with the intent to wait for Christmas and then can't wait to give them.....so, he will probably get it early....if T.R. has it finished. My son's figure will be under the tree when he comes home...whenever that will be. When he was in Iraq he did not get to come home during the tour so we left the Christmas tree up with his gifts underneath and celebrated with him when he came home in April!! Thank goodness for artificial trees!

I've only heard from my son for a few short minutes since he's been there and this story of him capturing a camel and riding it into camp, and the picture of him playing "cowboy" or "camelboy" was just what I needed to lift my spirits!!! It is taking me alot to post this specific message. The reason in which I guess I am adding to the drama by trying to stop it. Ive seen some of these comments and wanted so bad to say something but told myself not to get involved. It is now gotten to the point where people like myself are disappointed in how we are dealing with this as "a big family." This is the time where we all need to stick together and form a support system. We are all in this together and on the same team! Everyone is human, we make mistakes, we see things differently, and we make different choices. Thats what makes us individuals. Please I dont want to see this site fall to pieces because I look forward to reading all the wonderful comments and support that we are giving to our soldiers who deserve it. Next time you post something think about these men and woman that sacrafice everything for you. If you truly support your soldier only give loving and kind words and settle your discrepincies else where. I am a wife of a soldier I understand what it is like to worry and be without your loved one. It is very stressful for us, can you imagine what these men and woman are dealing with? Please Please just take a moment and think about this site and how much it means to you or I or anyone else that comes on here. Thankyou for your time and hopefully we can make some changes around here. :) I LOVE YOU SPECIALIST LANG!!!! KEEP UP ALL YOUR GOOD WORK 173rd!!!

I am Italian and those messages were not written by Italians but by some eastern European girls, probably romanians. That english was too bad to be of Italian girls. Please remember that we do speak english and our english is not so bad. Who of you all speaks Italian? Well, we do speak your language though so respect that. And please stop offending italian girls, that is horrible. I am sure uncomfortable things that happen around base happen around any base in the world so olease don't blame the italian girls or the american guys for that. Things like that also happen in every club/bar in this world so don't lower yourself in those kind of conversations. Please! It seems that every day we look for someone to attach on this website. Where are the loving girlfriends and the proud parents? I've just noticed a few. And Mommaski, you are the greatest! I am glad Michael grew up with a mom like you cause he deserved the best mom. Your patience and your unconditionate love and support teach a lesson to everyone of us.

I am sorry for what I am about post but there needs to be an end with the feuding. We love our soldiers far too much to get into these petty little arguments. Yes, Italian girls we know you too love our American soldiers, but in a sense, it's obvious that you girls asking about marital status and what not is what is upsetting others.(I am one of them) This is very real to me b/c this is my love's first deployment, and he told me what Italy was like-huh! and most of the messages worry me. BUT WHATEVER! I will find out when my phiancee gets home, Others will too. We want to love, hope, and pray to God that they will come home safe to their loved one's. We will all find out, I am sure of it. Italian girls, I am glad that there is an interest in the guys, but it is your duty to ask them if they're married or not, etc. PLEASE I would like to be a part of this great message board too. I think's great when everyone is happy from talking to others about what is happening in their lives. We need to support our sky soldiers and we need to help support each other. Please forgive me as I have selfishly been posting notes to my love, and not been giving my condolences to the families who soldiers were lost. I pray for the families every night. B/c it's real it could happen to me, and others. Let's all pay attention to our men. They wouldn't know what to think about all this. Really, I don't either. I just know things must change. We are a REALLY Big 173rd group and we can make it with each other.

An Observation: There aren't two groups here. (Those who are overreacting to some posts and those who are only trying to share information.) There is only one group, those who care about their (our) 173rd Airborne soldiers! Some express their anxiety via vulgarity and/or panicky responses. This is an expression of their fear that the one they love is or may be in danger. Those who post in a quiet composed manner also fear for their loved one. Obviously these fears are expressed in a different manner. The answer isn't for any of us to exclude the other but rather for each to include the other. Those who are screaming obscenities don't need a lecture, they need a hug, reassurance that things are alright. I don't know how we do that on the internet but at least we should all be cognizant of everyone's need to know that their loved one is not endangered by any of us on this site. I guess the answer is patience, love and forgiveness for those who are the most anxious. Ron

As an Iraq 173rd vet, My boys and I used to look at this page when we first got to country. We used to look for all the messages from our families and friends. It was a good outlet for quick messages and a welcome word from loved ones. About the third month over there, the Iraq message board turned into exactly what is happening now. Bickering between family members, italians, friends, and other military members. It turned into a big joke because many of the things we were reading were nothing but personal attacks and gossip. I still remember many of the candid conversations between family members and how ugly people got. In respect of the soldiers downrange in the ghan, how about everyone ceases to post petty arguments and keep it to what this board is meant for. Its meant for quick messages to family members deployed and for the deployed soldiers to communicate with their loved ones. Unless you want to turn off the soldiers looking at this page, I recommend being a bigger and better person and driving on. When a soldier only has ten minutes on the internet, do you think he wants to read 30 pages of bickering in order to find a quick hello from his folks. Dont destroy something that Mr Bradley has been so gracious to host.

After reading the last few days of feuding on this site, I find it terribly ironic that though we want our soldiers to be home safe and not have to keep the peace elsewhere in the world, we don't seem to be doing a very good job of keeping the peace amongst ourselves...I am saddened that others who come here looking for comfort and community are getting grief and gossip...can't we do better than that? If you don't like what someone says, well, I guess you should thank your lucky stars you live in a country where disagreeing with another person is not a jail or death sentence...OK, I'm off the soapbox now...just gotta say to Mommanski--YOU ROCK!!!!! You are my idol, my inspiration, Babe! Sorry you have had to listen (read) the bickering...you (and our troops) deserve better!

I never offended or attacked italian girls, right? I was just disappointed with those who posted the message! Also, im sure they are italian : bad english and lots of mistakes in their message, as italians often do, me included. They didn't show any kind of respect writing those nasty words. That's all.

Dear Jessica, im really sorry but i cannot justify that kind of behaviour, although im italian. I didn't mean to offend you or italian people. I can even recognise the value of my people. But in this situation, please be honest: would you have still justified that behaviour if the girl who posted the bad message hadn't been italian? I guess no. Anyway, lets stop talking about that. I finally got a very short email from my soldier after two long weeks of waiting. He said that they are extremely busy. But said he did have time to send me some sail mail, so now I can't wait till I get that. SPC Baker I miss you and can't wait until you can come home. Stay safe and never forget that you're my hero. God bless all of our Sky Soldiers and the loved ones.

To Karen: the bad message was probably written by some italian girls. I don't have idea who they are but you don't need to apologyse. they have been so rude. Im sure you didn't mean to scare anyone. To the italian girls who posted that bad message: think almost ten times before speaking or writing anything. This is a public site, people is allowed to write or ask about what happens over there. Im so sorry to see that some italian girls, that I ve always considered intelligent, are so childish.

For anyone interested in sending packages of goodies to the soldiers, you should visit www.anysoldier.com. This website was actually founded by a sky soldier. If you select "WHERE TO SEND" and narrow your search by "PARENT UNIT", you may be able to find out what some of our soldier from 173rd may be needing out there. Soldiers who have applied make specific requests and even provide information on their living conditions.

I sent out a birthday box for my sons 21st birthday in May, it consisted of a cake ( frozen, but not sure if it will be edible), frosting, candles,a birthday banner, balloons, plates, cups, silverware, coke wrapped in a zip lock bag, goodie bags for everyone in his squad, disposable camera, plus of course his birthday gifts. Kind of silly, but if it makes them smile, even for just a bit, it is well worth it. Hope this helps. Arlene

Karen thanks for posting the information,I was not aware of the crash! I am thankful for any news that I read on this web page. It helps to alleviate some of the anxiety and worry. I am disgusted at what others have to say and have people lost their minds!!!!!!! I thought we were here to support and encourage each other! I am getting tired of reading negative stuff here and I am almost tempted to stop visiting the webpage, Mommasski (sorry 9f mis-splet) thanks for the great birthday idea :)

Hmmmm... Birthday ideas !?! Well when Michael turned 24 in Iraq, I sent Hostess cupcakes, a box of candles and silly party hats and little umbrellas (it was hot) to his buddy to hold until his birthday. Michael was very surprised and there was enough for all his friends. Course I am sure his friends thought his mother was a nut, but Michael said everyone loved the cupcakes and had alot of laughs. My son also adored movies so eveyone in my family sent him a just released DVD. I think the important thing is your loved one is remembered, you give a treat to him and his buddies and you make them laugh if even for a few moments.
