We got a letter today from Kelly. He sounded fine and was asking for us to send him stuff as usual. He said mail deliveries are slow coming but he thought it might get faster as the weather warms up. He had also left another message on our answering machine. He sounded like the same old Clint, so that's good.

Since Iraq, I have only sent AT&T phone cards to our soldiers. Heard once that they were the one to use. I found that Sams club or wal-mart has the best price. Hope that helps. Arlene

I heard from my grandson (508th B co) a week ago and he had gotten several packages.Some from his mother and some from me so I know they are getting mail. He said the food was pretty good and at that time didn't need anything particular. Sounded good. For a change the reception was excellent on the satellite phone he was using. Sometimes there is a dramatic delay but this time it was right on. The pictures are great, still hoping to catch a glimpse of him.

Hang in there folks - remember in March '03 we didn't hear anything for weeks and the mail was slow getting started. But once it got rolling the mail handlers did a great job keeping up with our boys. It will happen again - once they get settled and the mail starts flowing it will stay pretty constant. If 503 goes through what 508 did, it will take them a couple of weeks to get to their destinations and settled. But, as for mail, it's true, B Co and C Co mail is a bit slower than A Co and HHC unfortunately. I know that A Co has been getting their mail regularly and since they are with HHC it's the same. As for pictures, I believe Mr. Bradly can only put on what is provided to him. Everyone should tell their Soldier that we want more pictures from each individual platoons. I for one would love to see more of my boyfriends unit and platoon. So, I understand how everyone feels. Here's hoping they stay safe and can't wait for R&R to start. Should be soon for 508!! I love you and miss you very much baby!!

Mail is very slow. My soldier just received mail as far as letters on Monday, I had been sending mail since he left over a month ago! He also just received one of my five boxes a week ago! I have not received mail from him. He did say the post office had not been their way yet! :(

The word from B Co 1-508 is also that mail is slow. We have also sent many letters and packages that have not been received. The last package he received was sent on March 7. He does not seem to have gotten anything mailed after that. He has been able to send e-mail for the past few days.

luvbug6147 thank you for your message. I happen to think my son Matthew is a pretty terrific guy too! He has talked about your husband MANY times and thinks VERY highly of him. I wish I could have met both of you when I was in Vicenza for Thanksgiving last year. A couple of nights before I left I took Matthew and several of his buddies out to dinner. Unfortunately he thought - typical :) - he had already asked your husband if the two of you could join us. When he realized he hadn't, and he finally did ask you weren't able to make it. To Red Devil Supporter B Co. I don't know why but sometimes I can't go directly to the Fotki site either. Here's (2) other ways to see the pictures. The quickest way is when you're at the Menu Afghanistan page for this site instead of going to the message board, click on "More Photos" and that will take you right to Fotki. A little longer route would be from the menu page click on "Photos from Afghanistan". Then go to at least page 2 and click on the line that says, "Permission by Fury 1508". It is my belief that "NO personal cell phones are allowed downrange." This includes any type of Satellite phone. So don't spend the money on something your soldier would get in trouble for having. I understand you concern and desire to talk with your sky soldier but, as they say ...War is hell!

To MaryAnn & Gina in regard to pictures of 1/508 A Co. There are at least (5)pictures I know of that were taken with my son Matthew's camera and he's in the same platoon as James. Go to: http://publicfotki.com/fury1508 Click on "Sharks" and go to page 2. Pictures: #121 - these are (2) guys from the platoon, #123 - sorry I don't know who this is, #131, and #207 & #208 are pictures of my son Matthew. In the current issue of Freedom Watch on page 10 there is a photo with a caption that says it is my son SPC Chet Ames - but it is not him, darn. I don’t send attachments, only to family and I give the heads up and have advised not to open unless I verify I have sent one. Crazy world we live in today…I am very wary of attachments, even from people I know. I know I did not get any spam at my address until I posted my address on the website, scam emails. People with too much time are responsible for this. I don’t believe it is anyone who really should be on this website, I believe we are warm and cozy, thinking only parents, wives and loved ones look up this site, but the reality is that anyone with internet access can see our gut feelings, and any sensitive information we choose to post…another reason to be very careful of what is posted. I just wanted to pass this on to the Combat Wombats and the rest of The Herd. On my car I have a yellow ribbon magnet that says, "Keep My Son Safe" with a 173rd Airborne emblem and next to that a Blue Star Flag magnet. Recently I was driving on the freeway and was coming up to a car that had a personalized license plate. I could see that there was an Airborne sticker (couldn't make out the brigade) and the plate said a year and "VNam". After a minute or so I heard a horn honking and looked to the left, which was the fast lane. It was the guy in the car that I had passed. (Anyone who knows me, knows how I drive so he REALLY had to haul to catch me)! He motioned for me to roll my window down. He asked if it was my son in the 173rd and I told him yes, that he was in Afghanistan. Then he said "tell him thank you for me and I am with them all the way!" He added that he hoped they all have a quick and safe return. The vet then mentioned he was in the 101st during Viet Nam. I thanked him for what he said and thanked him for HIS service. Not at all a very safe conversation but did that make my day! I was able to tell my son about it the other day on the phone and he was quite impressed. A few days later a young family saw my magnets and the woman told me she liked them. She then asked if it was for my son and I said yes that he was in Afghanistan. She wanted to know his name. I told her and she said she would pray for him and his unit. Then a friend of mine in Sacramento, CA forwarded the picture of my son on this site, to several of her friends. One of the ones that responded is from Louisiana. She said she is praying for us and that she is going to pass his picture on to everyone she knows so the eventually the "whole state" of LA will be praying for us. I told my son there are people he doesn't even know and probably will never meet that are thinking and praying for all of them. They used to hang these during World War I and World War II. A blue star signifies currently serving and a gold star signifies a soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice. The photos you put on and the information that you provide does mean a great deal to those that are without their loved ones. On the question of Photos, I post photos of Sky Soldiers, because I know how important it is for a wife, mother, sister or uncle to see their sky soldier. It can really make their day. A group photo can brighten the lives of a dozen families. They are important links to our loved ones as are the words we write. Lets keep that in focus. hey...i talked to my boyfriend last night...he's with HHC 1-508. he says it's still snowing, and some of the guys have the flu, but they're being given medication so he said they should be fine. he did ask for Bear Creek brand soup mixes...and any food that's fast and convenient, like the "just-add-water" type of stuff. he reassured me that they are all doing well so we shouldn't worry so much...but what else can we do! i just keep praying that they all return home safe! :)

hey people! news from Delta battery 319. The guys that left on the 1st week of march got to their final destination. He said that they have showers they can take everyday, also hot water, satellite tv, phone lines and computer lines are not very long but they are very busy in these days cuz they just got there. I'm glad they're doing good! That place is a gem from what he said so be happy, they got lucky this time. The only thing they would need is food cuz they're very far from the base. Hope this helps!

Everybody who reads this message board has to realize that where C co and B co are at doesn't have many or any computers. They're in the Stix of Afgahnistan. As for A co and HHC they have 3 computers for the entire base, they're supposed to put in 14 more laptops, but are still in the working process. I can assure everyone that currently that there hasn't been any firefights or violence towards the 1/508th as of yet. Please be patient, you will hear from your loved ones in due time. Hello to all, we heard from our son Will 508th C/Co on the net last Sunday, it was wonderful to hear from him, he says that he is fine and all is well. I know their living conditions are not too modern but he doesn't seem to mind. We have sent him letters and packages but as far as we know he hasn't received any yet. Our local American Legion post has been a good source of care packages for the local soldiers who are serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan, they are always asking what they can do, also a local chain of outdoor equipment has been very helpful with discounts to families for any supplies that we send to Will, just ask and you will be surprised who will want to help. Will have a good weekend, we think of you always, pray for you and all of your buddies in that far away land called Afghanistan. Love Mom

To sister asking about the flat rate priority mail boxes -- you can get them from the post office or you can order them from www.usps.com. Minimum order is a box of 25 but they are free and delivered right to your house at no charge. There are two sizes available. Here is the description from their website. Hope this answers your questions. • The Priority Mail Flat Rate Box is $7.70 for any U.S. destination and any weight up to a 70 lb. maximum. • The inside dimensions for the two boxes available are 11" x 8.5" x 5.5" and 13.625" x 11.875" x 3.375". • The contents of the flat rate box must be neatly contained inside of the box with adhesive packaging tape. • The box must close securely and retain its shape when taped with adhesive. • The shape of the box may not be changed or enlarged to fit its contents.

The US Post office has a box that is a flat rate of $7.70. The box is smaller but FREE and they will give you several when you go there if you ask for them. It doesn't NOT matter how much they weigh. It's a flat rate. If you can stuff it in the box and get it closed then it goes at that cost. I have mailed 2 and both boxes I had them weigh and give me a "normal" price as to what they would've been without the flat rate and I saved $4.00 each time. That is good to me. "PATIENCE" One of the most difficult things with a loved one in a war zone. They will contact you as soon as they can - some have access to phones and computers more than others. Don't feel left out. In Iraq we didn't hear for weeks and months at a time. Technology has given us less patience. Always remember they are thinking of you and they are not alone - They are there with their "Brothers". Flat Rate Priority boxes are the way to go. Your local Post Office will give them to you, just ask for them. If you need a bigger box, they also have standar rate Priority boxes, also free and they have Priority stamped on them, no need for tape.

Just a note about the Flat Rate boxes. We have sent 2 boxes to our son and it is cheaper in the long run in weight alone. That box was heavy and would have cost us alot more money if it had been in a regular box. The are worth it... Thanks

We got a letter from our son, Carl Ireland, C Co today that was mailed from Afghanistan on March 8. Mostly upbeat about the long, long trip from Italy. Some funny parts about how happy the 27th ID was to see them and eagerly help them unload. Didn't take C Company long to figure out those guys are based in Hawaii, and that thay were headed back there on the same transport! Anyway, don't we all know our troops will make the best of whatever their situation is. They are the greatest.

Just received my order of 25 FREE flat rate Priority mail boxes from USPS.com and will be using them a lot. The last package I mailed normally weighed 11 lbs. and cost me over $23. These boxes are smaller but I'll just send more often and still save money! I am mailing from Calif. and anything over 2 pounds saves money by using the flat rate boxes.
